Not as good as I had expected
the.banker6 March 2000
Before I saw this movie, I had seen the trailer several times and had read some comments. I was expecting something like a Pulp-Fiction-kind-of-movie or at least a action packed comedy.

Well, I was pretty disappointed. This movie was not too funny, most of the jokes didn't work, and the action was also not breath-taking. Most of the actors were pretty weak especially the one who had the main part (Mr. Harloff), from the weak actors I have to exclude the guys who played Alex (Jürgen Tarrach) and Honcek (Dieter Pfaff), they both did a great job. The main plot of the story was a romance between Mr. Harloff and Mrs. Hesme and the action only seemed to be added so that they could find at least some people who wanted to see this movie.

To be honest and that is the worst part about it, one has to admit that it was one of the better German movies, but this only shows the quality of the other ones.

I gave 6 points, mainly because it was a try in the right direction (if one had left out the romantic stuff, taken different actors, taken funnier jokes and made better action sequences, the movie could have been good) and because of the good and funny acting of Mr. Tarrach and Mr. Pfaff.

Preparing to be ... deluxe?

Now if you care about how much work has been done in preparation to do a movie, you will quite impressed with this movie. It shows on screen, but if you needed confirmation the director talks about it (interviews and audio commentary). The actors are overall good and for a german language (actually the director is from Austria and yes there is a difference) movie this is quite decent in its production values.

Now some things are dated, especially when it comes to technology. Although some like to use "retro" cell phones right now, this is just one of many examples. The story is ok and the stunts are good too. Camera work is quite nice ... it helps with the story.

best austrian film ever

Warning: Spoilers
What a pleasant surprise! A film that grips and manages to hold your attention until the end, and it's from Austria! Great job by all the actors, especially by Jürgen Hentsch as Ed, the disabled crook. He's a villain, but a quite a reasonable and cool guy, nice touch that the refreshing story - SPOILER - lets him survive in the end. Go see this film that includes inter alia a remarkable house on a cliff, a crook that impales himself on a tree branch, and lots of telephones. I rated it 8 points out of 10.
