Against the faraway backdrop of President Trump’s “hard power” budget that would slash U.S. foreign aid in favor of military spending increases, former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush are in Africa this week with a gentle reminder that the “soft power” of helping neighbors is powerful still.
The Bushes are on a three-day visit to Botswana and Namibia as part of their George W. Bush Institute’s work on global women’s health and women’s leadership. As they highlighted great health and education advances made on the continent with the help of U.

Nearly 20 years ago, Coca-Cola unveiled its Refreshing Filmmaker’s Award as part of the company’s commitment to education and the arts. The competition tapped various film schools and their brightest students to submit entries of original scripts and storyboards, with 10 finalists ultimately receiving $7,500 to produce a 50-second film that was shown at theaters around the country.
Previous winners include Kyle Newman, who directed “Fanboys” and is currently working on the animated feature “Gnomes!,” along with Josh Greenbaum, who is currently working on a new rom-com starring Elizabeth Banks. Not bad company.
The program has evolved over the years, and is returning full force as a brand-new initiative backed by both Coca-Cola and Regal Cinemas, now called the Coca-Cola and Regal Films program. Aided by the addition of Regal as a partner, the new program provides even greater opportunities for student filmmakers to access the entertainment industry and receive national exposure.

When actress Alicia Silverstone describes herself as “slightly workaholic,” few would disagree. In the last year alone, the 33-year-old has released a vegan cookbook, “The Kind Diet,” reprised her critically-lauded role as a seemingly superficial event planner in Donald Marguiles’ play “Time Stands Still” on Broadway (she originated the role in 2009 at L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse), and signed on to headline two new films: the political satire “Butter” and the vampire horror/romantic comedy “Vamps.”
The latter film re-teams Silverstone with writer/director Amy Heckerling, whose 1995 comedy “Clueless’ catapulted the actress to stardom. Though Silverstone admittedly lost her way, career-wise, for a period, she says she’s become a lot more focused over the past three years. “I’ve just taken a very different approach and gotten much more clear in my heart and really just followed my instincts,” she said.
Her instincts have also led her to the fascinating-sounding “Butter,...
