The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is celebrating 73 years of Black film artistry with the new exhibit titled Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971.
Curated by the Academy Museum’s Doris Berger and Rhea Combs of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the first-of-its-kind exhibition features seven galleries exploring Black representation in film, from portraits of icons like Ruby Dee and Nina Mae McKinney to home videos of the Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway.
“It’s really exciting for us to be able to help expand the conversation around American cinema, essentially, by bringing forward these important contributions by Black filmmakers as well as performers and other artisans and technicians,” Combs tells Variety.
Since 2017, Berger and Combs have been acquiring a vast collection of costumes, scripts, drawings and other historical materials for “Regeneration” by digging through multiple archives at the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library and even traveling to Berlin and Paris.

Alex Trebek, the long-running host of the iconic trivia gameshow “Jeopardy” has died, the show announced Sunday afternoon. He was 80.

Trebek had been courageously documenting his life with cancer after being diagnosed in March 2019. He attended the TCM Classic Movies Film Festival in April of that year, giving a heartfelt and emotional introduction to the feature “Wuthering Heights.” He celebrated one year of fighting cancer — prognosis for survival after 12 months is usually 18% — in March 2020. Because of the global health pandemic, and to protect Trebek, the game show filmed without audiences before production was suspended indefinitely.

John Travolta has been a repeat offender at the Razzies, earning 14 nominations over the course of his career, including Worst Actor of the Decade for both the 1980s and 2000s. But mercifully the only times he won were his nominations for 2000’s “Battlefield Earth.” However, we think he’ll be back in the winner’s circle — if you can call it that — this year for both “The Fanatic” and “Trading Paint.” He’s the odds-on favorite for Worst Actor based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users.
The L. Ron Hubbard-based sci-fi film “Battlefield Earth” was a notorious critical and commercial flop — its MetaCritic score was 9 out of 100, and it’s one of the 15 lowest rated films on IMDb. It won all seven Razzie categories it was nominated in, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor and Worst Screen Combo for Travolta. Travolta’s acting prize was actually awarded to...

Career Watch is a vocational checkup of top actors and directors, and those who hope to get there.
Thanks to strong recognition overseas, at 64 John Travolta still carries the clout that gets movies made. But this is not always a good thing: Travolta’s passion project, “Gotti,” debuted in Cannes but opened to $1.7 million amid derisive reviews (Tomatometer: 0%).
Bottom Line: After strutting out of Broadway and television into ’70s movie stardom, the Irish-Italian Travolta languished in the ’80s until Quentin Tarantino gave him his 1994 comeback as hitman Vincent Vega in “Pulp Fiction.” That movie returned Travolta’s swagger and while he hasn’t topped it, Travolta has surfed many career dips and swells without completely alienating his aging fan base. But “Gotti” may be the tipping point.

This article marks Part 16 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Awards, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
In 1977, the year Meryl Streep made her feature film debut in “Julia,” Nora Ephron was working full-time as a columnist for Esquire, penning memorable pieces on the likes of controversial Boston University President John Silber and the series finale of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”
By the time, six years later, Ephron made her own big screen debut as screenwriter of the Streep-headlined “Silkwood” (1983), Streep had two Oscar victories under her belt. The success of “Silkwood” in 1983 set expectations supremely high for their collaboration on “Heartburn” (1986), based on the acclaimed Ephron semi-autobiographical novel – anticipation that would make that picture’s ultimate...

“Wonder Woman” is expected to top the weekend; claims that it will be the most successful film ever directed by a woman will soon follow. That’s possible, but far from guaranteed: While Hollywood’s pretzel logic would suggest that women rarely direct blockbusters, Patty Jenkins’ success story will have a lot of competition.
The dearth of women directors trusted by studios to helm top movies becomes even more suspect when adjusting grosses to current ticket prices. Despite limited opportunities, 14 have grossed over $200 million, and 40 total over $100 million when calculated at current numbers.
Below, we go into detail about the top directors and their movies; there’s a lot to see, with some compelling and surprising conclusions. However, more than any other statistic, here’s one that stands out: Among the most successful female directors, after adjusting to current ticket prices, the career average per film gross is over $100 million for several.

Be honest: every time you play the lottery, the same fantasy runs through your head, of you sitting in a bath full of champagne, wearing a top hat and monocle, and throwing wads of cash into the air gleefully. Before you’ve even left the shop, you’ve spent half the money that you’re almost definitely destined to win, no matter what the actual odds.
Feeding this fantasy is the many, many movies that have involved lottery wins, and the results for the winners. They are invariably everyman characters, just like you, who need an escape from the mediocrity of mundane life, and who see their universe changed entirely by the huge injection of cash brought when the right numbers come in.
Now more than ever, the experience of buying a ticket is even easier, so that dream can be fed without even needing to go to the shop,...

The Us is full of iconic filming locations … ideal for a road trip. From Alaska to Texas here are 10 of our favourite movie sights
Chicago
The Lake House (2006)
So many Chicago hotspots were showcased in this movie – the Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza, Michigan Avenue, Grant Park, the bridges over the Chicago river. One scene takes Kate (Sandra Bullock) on a walking tour, past stunning examples of local architecture. Christopher Plummer, who plays Alex's (Keanu Reeves) architect father, has one of my favourite lines. He says the most important quality in architecture is "always the light. Always." Take an architecture tour for your own light-filled experience.
• Also filmed in the area: Sixteen Candles, The Untouchables, Source Code, Couples Retreat, The Break-Up
Seattle
The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989)
The scenes in this movie that were filmed in Belltown, Pioneer Square and the Roosevelt Hotel all pull you into this great Pacific Northwest city.

In light of this weeks news of the passing of noted author, playwright, producer and director Nora Ephron, today we are highlighting some of the most memorable moments from her accomplished and versatile career onscreen and onstage. Ephrons artistic output consisted of collections of essays, memoirs, novels, screenplays, feature films, plays and producing duties on projects close to her heart, as well as a considerable amount of awareness raising for womens causes and general charitable work for the arts. While perhaps best known for her much-loved trio of romantic comedies When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless In Seattle and Youve Got Mail, Ephron also penned the screenplay for the Mike Nichols biopic Silkwood about whistleblower Karen Silkwood, as well as wrote and directed the recent hit comedy Julie amp Julia, re-teaming with her friend and consistent collaborator, three-time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep. Incidentally, Streep actually played Ephron - or at least a...

It's been touching to see the outpouring of love for Nora Ephron since the journalist, novelist, screenwriter and director passed away last night. Ephron's films have never really been particularly trendy; you're not going to find many hip young filmmakers naming her as an influence. But it's clear from the last twelve hours or so that most cinephiles hold at least a few of her films close to their hearts. Ephron wasn't just the writer, and sometimes director, behind a string of classics, she was also one of the most important women in the film industry across the last twenty years, and one of the most insightful writers of female characters that Hollywood has ever had.
Her big-screen work is only a drop in the ocean of a long and hugely impressive career; she was a prolific and brilliant prose writer, and anyone with even a slight interest in Ephron...

The Oscar-nominated director and writer Nora Ephron has died aged 71. We look back over her career in clips
Nora Ephron's first screenwriting effort never saw the light of day: a polish on the script for All the President's Men, based on the case of her then-husband, Carl Bernstein. Director Alan J Pakula scrapped that version, but it was a heavyweight kick-off to a career largely remembered for its lighter moments.
In fact, Ephron's first work to make it to the big screen was similarly serious and scrupulous: Silkwood, a 1983 drama directed by Mike Nichols inspired by the true-life story of a whistleblower at a malfunctioning plutonium plant who died in a suspicious car crash.

Chicago – Six years after her diagnosis of preleukemia, filmmaker Nora Ephron died Tuesday, June 26, in a New York hospital at age 71. She leaves behind a legacy that began with her work as a celebrated essayist and continued through a successful film career that earned her three Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay. Her films provided especially memorable showcases for the talents of actresses Meg Ryan and Meryl Streep.

Ephron received her first Oscar nod for “Silkwood,” Mike Nichols’ 1984 drama inspired by the life of whistleblower Karen Silkwood (played by an Oscar-nominated Streep), who died under suspicious circumstances. Ephron’s other two Oscar nominations honored the ace screenwriter for two of her greatest crowd-pleasers, Rob Reiner’s 1989 comedy, “When Harry Met Sally,” and Ephron’s own wildly popular 1994 romance, “Sleepless in Seattle.” Both films featured splendid collaborations between Ephron and Meg Ryan, whose feigned restaurant orgasm in “Sally...

I got to meet Nora Ephron 20 years ago when she was promoting her directing debut, "This Is My Life," and I found her to be exactly like one of the heroines of her movies: smart, worldly, self-effacing, and as wittily eloquent as we all wish we could be in real life but almost never are. Actually, she was the heroine of most of her movies, since she specialized in the thinly veiled autobiographical roman a clef. Ephron, who died at 71 on June 26, made herself a trailblazer -- as a writer of influential romantic comedies (notably, "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "You've Got Mail"), as a successful director at a time when few women held that distinction, and as one of the most powerful women in the film industry -- but she did it all simply by being herself. The urge to transform her life into art came naturally to Ephron.

Despite having films in her past like Lucky Numbers and Bewitched, director Nora Ephron has proven that when she gets a film right, she knocks it out of the park as when she helmed Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail, not to mention writing my favorite romantic comedy of all-time When Harry Met Sally. Now Ephron is venturing into familiar territory, at least in the genre that she's used to working, as Variety reports the filmmaker is attached to direct a big screen adaptation of Lost in Austen, a British mini-series which is essentially a modern, time-traveling take on Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. The original series starred Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) and here's the official synopsis: Amanda Price is sick of the modern world. She yearns for the romance and elegance found in the books by her favorite author, Jane Austen. But she's...

Yes, It's Another Version Of 'Pride & Prejudice' It's easy to dump on Nora Ephron. And in many ways, justified, certainly to anyone who's had to sit through "Mixed Nuts," or "Michael," or "Lucky Numbers" or "Bewitched." But she did, of course, write the stone-cold classic "When Harry Met Sally," and, maybe it only feels that way because so many of those who've been influenced by her have botched the rom-com genre so badly, but when she gets it even half-right, as in "Sleepless in Seattle," "You've Got Mail" or "Julie and Julia," there are few who can do what…...

Avatar. Number two with $23.6 million. Yadda-yadda, blah-bl-- wait, What?!
That's right. After eight weeks of box-office dominance, James Cameron's pet project finally fell to the likes of Nicholas Sparks. The girls turned out in droves to see Dear John, whose $32.4 million opening unseated the behemoth blockbuster with some good old-fashioned 2-D tear-jerking. The last big Sparks adaptation, The Notebook, opened to just $13 million but went on to earn more than $80 million as ideal summer counter-programming back in 2004; whatever the word of mouth is on John, though (fans of the book haven't been kind), it faces more immediate competition from the star-studded, laugh-jerking likes of Valentine's Day next week.
The weekend's other new release, the male-skewing From Paris with Love, opened to $8.1 million -- a fraction of what the director's Taken managed last year and John Travolta's weakest wide tally since 2000's Lucky Numbers. Last week's male-skewing Edge of Darkness...

February has arrived and along with it the slew of movies capitolizing on the romantic sentiment of the month. The Channing Tatum train pulled into theaters this weekend, using the actor's muscle bound hunkiness and built-in female fan base to take the romantic flick to the number one spot. Dear John marks the second largest opening for a Tatum vehicle (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) and the $32 million it banked easily covered its minimal $25 million budget. The news for John Travolta's latest action piece, From Paris with Love, wasn't so positive. The movie took a distant third place with only $8.1 million against its $52 million budget. That's the lowest debut a Travolta helmed flick has suffered since Lucky Numbers almost ten years ago. The movie that's been garnering Jeff Bridges tons of awards, Crazy Heart, began to capitolize on its actor's fame and finally opened a little wider this...

The new romantic drama "Dear John" unexpectedly ended the seven-week reign of "Avatar" at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday, pulling in large numbers of young female moviegoers.
"Dear John" grossed an estimated $32.4 million in the three-day period since opening Friday, said distributor Screen Gems, the low-budget division of Sony Corp..
It had hoped for an opening of about $20 million on a weekend when many Americans forsake movies to watch the Super Bowl, traditionally the year's most-watched television broadcast. The football championship starts around 6:25 pm in Miami.
"Dear John" stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried as lovers whose romance is curtailed by the September 11 attacks. It is directed by Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallstrom and based on "The Notebook," a novel by Nicholas Sparks.
Audiences for the film were 84% female and two-thirds were under the age of 21, Sony said.

Here’s an alternative award giving ceremony that those in Hollywood don’t like! The Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) always announce their awards right near the Oscar noms in a bid to steal some thunder and to remind us all that some movies suck! For the likes of Sly Stallone, it’s the gift that keeps on giving. He’s received most nominations in practically every category going! Some like Halle Berry (Worst Actress for Catwoman) and Paul Verhoeven (winner for Showgirls) have turned up at the ceremony and graciously accepted their awards. See? Some Hollywood folk do have a sense of humour!
Leading the pack this year is G.I. Joe, Land of the Lost, Hannah Montana and the controversial inclusion of R. Pattz and Kirstin Stewart. Here’s the full list of nominations:

We're less than 10 hours away from the 2010 Oscar Nominations (as of this posting), and as per usual, the Razzie Awards -- which celebrate the worst in cinema -- are announced the day before. And as usual, the Razzies nominate the most obvious movies -- the spectacularly bad popular movies, actors, and actresses (not that there's anything wrong with that). From a cursory glance at the nominees, it appears as though the same five movies dominate every category and Sandra Bullock may be the most nominated this year (ironic, since she'll also likely be nominated for an Oscar) for her role in All About Steve. Transformers 2, G.I. Joe, Old Dogs, New Moon and Land of the Lost are the other big titles on the list. There's really no excuse for leaving out Paul Blart or Year One, though.

The 2010 Razzie nominations were announced today. “Land of the Lost” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” led the pack with 7 nominations each, Sandra Bullock and Megan Fox will be battling it out for the Worst Actress Award.
Sandra Bullock expected to score an Academy Award nomination Tuesday for her hit drama “The Blind Side,” and
“She could be the first person ever to win a Razzie and an Oscar in the same weekend,”
said John Wilson, founder of the Golden Raspberry Awards, now in their 30th year of singling out Hollywood’s low points.
Other actors and actresses graced with nominations include Will Ferrell, Robert Pattinson, Eddie Murphy, John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, and Julie White who played Shia Labeouf’s mother in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Land of the Lost each grabbed seven nominations for the 2010 Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies), an annual event recognizing the worst movies had to offer.
The Michael Bay sequel made $835 million worldwide and placed second at the U.S. box office in 2009 while the Will Ferrell “comedy” tanked in its summer release, earning only half its budget back in the States. Both are in the running for “Worst Picture” along with critically panned All About Steve, the campy G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, and the John Travolta/Robin Williams groaner Old Dogs.
Sandra Bullock was nominated for “Worst Actress of 2009″ for All About Steve literally the day before the Academy Awards announcements where she’s the front-runner for “Best Actress” in The Blind Side. No actor has ever been awarded both awards in the same year.

Forget about the Oscars for now, let's talk about the Razzies. One day before the prestigious Academy Awards nominations, the Golden Raspberry Awards noms have been announced and it ain't good for both "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Land of the Lost." Both movies earned 7 nominations each.
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" received nominations for worst film, worst director for Michael Bay, worst screen couple (expanded to include both Shai LeBouf and Megan Fox or LeBouf and any Transformer), worst supporting actress, worst screenplay and worst remake/rip-off.
"Land of the Lost" also received seven nominations for Will Farrell as worst actor and worst screen couple, worst picture, director for Brad Silberling, remake/rip-off, screenplay and supporting actor for Jorma Taccone as Cha-Ka.
The Razzies also gave love to the worst of the decade which included Razzie-baits such as "Battlefield Earth" (2001), Tom Green's "Freddy Got Fingered" (2001), "Gigli" (2003), Lindsay Lohan...

Oscar's ugly little stepbrother Razzie announced his nominations this week for the worst movies and performances of 2009, and let's just say there's no shortage of stuff to choose from. The Golden Raspberry Awards are, of course, the annual awards that mock and ridicule all of the terrible blockbusters that we are forced to sit through in a year, and among the biggest offenders this year we have Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Land of the Lost, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and Twilight Saga: New Moon. Transformers and Land of the Lost lead the pack with seven nominations each. In an interesting twist, it seems that Sandra Bullock is nominated for Worst Actress for her performance in All About Steve, which means she might actually have a shot at winning both Best Actress at the Oscars and Worst Actress at the Razzies in the same year. Now that's an achievement!

First things first. Apologies for no "Sm" last week. We were going to debate whether or not Will Ferrell still registered with audiences, but the weekend's box office receipts settled that debate for us. However, we're back to chomp our teeth into this week's release of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - and whether or not Denzel Washington or John Travolta has had the better career. Adam Sweeney and Fsr Resident Devil's Advocate Josh Radde get awkwardly revealing in this debate. Opening Argument (Josh) Dear Fsr Readers, Mr. Sweeney is going to tell you about how Denzel Washington has had a better career than John Travolta, his co-star in the new Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 remake. Allow me to "8 Mile" his ass for a moment. He could tell you that Mr. Washington is a 2-time recipient of a golden statue known as "Oscar," and respectable force in the acting community. He may tell you that over the course of...

Jennifer Aniston and her co-stars are calling on Brad Pitt to join them on an episode of Friends to help boost their ratings. The hit TV show, which invariably leads the field in the ratings battle, was trounced last week by reality TV show Survivor II: The Australian Outback and worried producers are hoping they can entice star Aniston's husband onto the big screen to help them regain their lead. Gossip columnist Liz Smith says Pitt has already been looking over possible scripts but, as yet, has declined to give a definite answer. However, Smith adds that John Travolta who co-starred with Friends star Lisa Kudrow in his last movie Lucky Numbers, is close to agreeing to a guest appearance.
