Having worked at the Miami Herald for over 20 years, Rene Rodriguez has now left his position as the newspaper’s film critic. In a move defined by the Miami Herald managing editor Rick Hirsch, as “made to reflect what our audience is telling us about the news they value the most,” the Miami Herald is now without a full-time critic.
According to The Miami New Times, the paper will continue to publish reviews written by local writers, but there are currently no plans to fill Rodriguez’s vacant position. Rodriguez will remain at the Herald, but will be reassigned to a local news beat.

Scream Factory brings horror to the holidays with their December 13th release of Black Christmas (1974) on a Collector's Edition Blu-ray, and we have high-def clips and a trailer from the beloved Bob Clark movie.
Black Christmas Collector's Edition Blu-ray: "The college town of Bedford is receiving an unwelcome guest this Christmas. As the residents of sorority house Pi Kappa Sigma prepare for the festive season, a stranger begins to stalk the house.
A series of obscene phone calls start to plague the residents of the sorority and it becomes clear that a psychopath is homing in on the sisters with dubious intentions. And though the police try to trace the calls, they discover that nothing is as it seems during this Black Christmas. "Stuffed with extremely tense moments, chilling cinematography, amazing characters and long-lasting dread… [this] genuine classic is completely deserving of every bit of respect and admiration it's picked up over the last 40 years" (addictedtohorormovie.

TCA 2015: NBC’s “One Big Happy” producer says, “All I wanted to do is put out really funny material”
Ellen DeGeneres took the opportunity to address recent accusations against her during the Television Critics Association press tour panel in Pasadena, California, denying that she has a gay agenda.
During the panel for the upcoming NBC comedy “One Big Happy” — which DeGeneres executive produces and, yes, which stars Elisha Cuthbert as a lesbian who’s attempting to have a child via artificial insemination — DeGeneres shot down any suggestion that she got involved with the series because of the lead character’s sexuality.

He opened the network’s executive session with, “We’re developing a comedy with Bill Cosby and a miniseries about Hillary Clinton.”
The crowd laughed about the failed projects that topped off a past TCA session. He added, “Last year?”

Elegy To Connie screens Saturday, Nov 15 at 6:30pm at St. Louis University as part of The St. Louis International Film Festival. It is a Free event.
Elegy To Connie is a touching and unique documentary by local artist and filmmaker Sarah Paulsen that employs stop-motion animation to address the events leading up to and following the 2008 Kirkwood City Council shooting. The troubling incident is retold in interviews with a group of unintentional women activists who are bound together by their friendship with slain Councilwoman Connie Karr, and the animation amplifies their voices through striking visuals that sometimes illustrate their comments directly but frequently offer metaphoric counterpoint. Made in collaboration with these women, the film addresses the complicated issues surrounding the shooting – citizen representation, disenfranchisement, white privilege and black alienation, post-tragedy healing – and celebrates Connie’s legacy as a leader.
Sarah Paulsen took the time to talk to We Are Movie Geeks about her film.

Big changes are in store for the 5th annual Migrating Forms experimental media festival, which is set to run December 11-17.
Well, that’s the first change: Moving from its traditional spot in March to December. More importantly, though, the fest is moving physical locations. Instead of it’s usual home of the Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan, this year’s Migrating Forms will be screening at the BAMcinématek in Brooklyn.
The festivities will begin on Dec. 11 with the U.S. premiere of four new short films by media artist Ryan Trecartin. Each film involves a unique cast of characters, including Trecartin’s actual high school classmates and a group of reality TV show hopefuls, navigating their complex social strata.
The rest of the fest will screen challenging feature-length material, such as Drew Tobia’s outrageous See You Next Tuesday; the family drama The Unity of Things by Daniel Schmidt...

Yesterday, it was Senatorial cameos, Hines Ward references in the trailer that imply Robin will show up, and loads of YouTube pranks, crummy graphics and press releases.
Somewhere between then and late that night – probably after reading my article about how overblown it all is – The Dark Knight Rises marketing team tossed their hands up, pronounced a collective “fuck it” and released 49 pages of production notes, dialogue and synopses to the public.

As we've got two legitimate contenders for the crown, it looks like it will be a tight race this weekend, . In one corner we've got the Alien prequel, Prometheus, Rated R and over two hours long. In the other corner we've got Madagascar 3, 90 minutes of "fun" and rated PG. Let's sort things out... Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row Prometheus It made $10k per theater last weekend in France, same deal in Sweden. So why will it come in at $18k per here in the States? Critical mass, both from the critics and word of mouth. I found the piece over at Comics Alliance who have a fun series that envisions alternate-universe comic art, and it's called Great Comics That Never Happened. This bit of art craziness comes from artist Tom Scioli. Even though this is probably the coolest My Little Pony design I've ever seen, I'm not sure if I still would have read the comics or watched the cartoons. What do you think of the Kirby Pony makover?

"Harry Potter" is the most successful film franchise ever made, with its eight films earning a record-shattering $7.7 billion worldwide... but it's never won a single Oscar. Like Ron and Hermione's climactic kiss, the Academy should -- no, needs to -- finally take serious notice and give the magical movie saga some much-needed love.
The series has gone 0 for 9 in previous nominations, most of which were in technical categories. And even though the series' incredible final film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" has gotten no love at all this awards season -- yet -- this could still be the Chosen One's year to triumph (with a Best Picture nomination, we hope). Here's why:
The Last Hurrah: Usually "sequels" don't fare very well with the Academy (okay, less than well -- only two have ever won, "The Godfather Part II" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King...

The Lion Theater at Theater Row
Through November 7, 2010
Imagine this: You arrive at the Lion Theater for a performance of Critical Mass, just as intermission is ending. Frustrated and annoyed with yourself for being late, you seat yourself as the second act commences. For the most part, you truly enjoy it -- and so you mentally kick yourself for missing the first act. The reality: If you had been on time, you may have experienced a frustration and annoyance equaling or surpassing that of having been late.

Take a look back at Jared Leto and company's road to the 2010 VMAs.

The success of 30 Seconds to Mars' This Is War album is as much a tribute to the band's unyielding dedication as it is to their general insanity. After all, they were, for a long while, a band without a home — having been famously sued for $30 million by their label, Virgin Records — or a plan (Jared Leto told MTV News that he intended to sell their still-unfinished album "door to door") if the band couldn't rectify things with Virgin).
Of course, we all know how the story ends. After a long wait, War hit stores in December, spawned two hit singles and served as the launching pad for 30 Seconds to Mars' ever-growing world tour. Perhaps as a tribute to their unwavering commitment, the band was honored with four nominations...

Cologne, Germany -- In the video game business, Germany has often been slow to adjust to new trends, but the country is leading Europe in the industry's fastest-growing segment: free-to-play online games.
These games, which make money by charging players for virtual goods such as clothing and weapons, are big business. Researcher Dfc Intelligence forecasts the U.S. and European market for such virtual items will grow to more than $3 billion by 2015 from $800 million in 2009.
Understandably, online games will be a big topic at Gamescom, Europe's largest industry trade fair, which runs Aug. 18-22 in Cologne.
Among the biggest free-to-play companies are American -- led by Zynga Inc., Electronic Arts' Playfish and Playdom, which Disney acquired last month for up to $763 million. But Germany is home to two rising giants: Hamburg-based Bigpoint and Gameforge, headquartered in Karlsruhe. The duo demonstrated their international clout this year by securing the online gaming...

So I was recently interviewed by Shane Rivers over at OnlyGoodMovies.com and their Critical Mass feature where they talk to bloggers and film critics around the web and the industry. It was really cool to talk about stuff and answer questions I normally do not get to talk about such as: where do I see the industry going? who my favorite film critic is? and many more.
Head over to the site now and check out the interview and what I think on some of those questions above and more.
Only Good Movies was first established in 1999 with the following in mind: people want to read about and purchase good movies, not bad ones. We cut through all the junk out there and only review good films. They currently have several hundred titles in their Good Movies database. This month sees the release of A Nightmare on Elm Street, a remake that’s been a long time coming. With so many slasher revivals going on, be they remakes or original properties, it’s important now to look back on the genre and learn a few of its intricacies. The wealth of material to cover is staggering. The films that follow do not necessarily represent the finest work the genre has to offer, but were selected for their uniqueness and appeal.
If any of these tickle your fancy, I've included some Amazon links to buy the ones that are still in print. Unless otherwise noted, all of these releases present the films in their original aspect ratio and in their most complete versions available to date.
[Note: While extensive measures have been taken to eliminate graphic details in deconstructing the films, trailers and clips have been provided wherever applicable. They can at times be exceedingly violent, and quite spoiler-heavy. We urge you to use judgment before viewing them. Thank you.]
Inferno (IMDb)
1980, Dario Argento
The core difference between director Dario Argento’s celebrated Suspiria and its overlooked follow-up, Inferno, is simple: Inferno hates you.

Director: Monteith McCollum I sometimes think I am one of the only people in the United States that would prefer if we could reset some of the world’s technological advancements, for example: go back to the pre-automobile days…or at least to the days before every household had multiple automobiles. Now, I say this but my actions contradict my words. I own a car, but I avoid driving said car as often as possible. (For example, I am hoping to go the entire 2010 SXSW Film Festival without using my car.) I should also admit that I do not currently own a bicycle. My primary means of transportation are the bus and my own two feet. Two of the main reasons that I own a car are: the public transportation system in Austin is mediocre at best (still waiting on Light Rail) and I do not like riding a bicycle alongside traffic.

The official lineup for the 2010 SXSW Film Festival was announced today, which features a lineup of 119 films that will screen this year on March 12-21. You can look over the full lineup on the SXSW website, although as far as I can tell actual screening times still have yet to be provided.
Listed below here are a couple of films that may be of specific interest to readers of Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film:

Despite a very disappointing 2009 for 3D-Realms, what with having to lay off most of its staff earlier this year and being sued by Take-Two for not completing Duke Nukem Forever as a result, CEO Scott Miller still has high hopes for his iconic action hero. According to Shacknews, the first issue of Gamesauce contains Miller’s upbeat outlook on Duke:
“The next few years should see a strong resurgence in Duke. There are numerous other Duke games in various stages of development, several due out this year. We are definitely looking to bring Duke into casual gaming spaces, plus there are other major Duke games in production.”
The new Duke Nukem Trilogy is still expected for the PSP and DS despite missing the target 2009 release for Critical Mass, the first game in the trilogy. There should also still be 2 iPhone games in the pipeline, and there’s also the possibility...

30 Seconds to Mars are not exactly what you'd call a subtle rock band. Their This Is War album (due December 8) features songs written in Berlin and recorded in Hawaii (with Kanye West), guest vocals from fans recorded at so-called "summits" around the globe, and appearances by Tibetan monks and Iranian Twitterers, to name just a few.
So, it's not surprising to learn that the video for War's first single, "Kings and Queens," has become a gigantic event too. In fact, 30Stm were no longer even referring to it as a video. It's a short film now.

As I travel around the country talking to women—in ones and twos, or in groups both large and small—I always talk about a phenomenon so common that I have yet to find a woman who hasn’t experienced it. You’re sitting in a meeting with all or mostly men, I say. And you say something that you think makes a lot of sense. Before I even finish the sentence, the heads start nodding; they know where this is going. Everyone ignores you, I continue. Then, a minute or two later, a man says essentially the same thing. And everyone agrees that it’s a great idea, a brilliant idea, the right course of action. Every woman in the room laughs because every woman in the room has been there. But it’s really not very funny. Being ignored is tough on the soul. And no matter how smart or accomplished women are,...

While most of the world had its eyes on Beijing and the Olympics this past week, DC's intrepid reporters Butane, Syxx, Foy, Uc, and yours truly have been scouring the globe for genre news and views to send your way. Although I'm not following the Games much myself, I thought for this August 9-15, 2008, Weekly Wrap-Up, I'd join the fray and employ an international theme focusing on projects outside the good ol' Us of A.
Considering this is also the week that brought news of a possible Bigfoot being found, it makes sense to start with a nature-run-amok item. Coming soon from Korea is Chaw, about a man-eating, mutant boar with a bad attitude. The producers are promising some realistic, frightening effects despite the creature being mostly CG, and we'll see how they do. Rogue managed to use CG successfully; hopefully Chaw will too.
