Today’s film is the 2009 short Love Bug. The film stars Reese Merritt, Kelsey Buchanan, Leslie Langee, and Anne Nabors, and is written and directed by Kat Candler. Candler made her feature film writing and directing debut in 2000 with Cicadas, following it up with a number of short films, and a second feature in 2006, titled Jumping Off Bridges. Her newest film, titled Hellion, made its debut at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and opens in limited release in American theatres this weekend.

Despite having two household names attached to the production, the feature-length version of Hellion showcases two extremely talented young actors: Josh Wiggins (Jacob) and Deke Garner (Wes). Like the short film, Hellion relishes in the youthful ecstasy of absolute freedom and the inherent wildness of boys when left to their own devices as well as highlighting the irresponsible choices that they tend to make. Kat Candler (Cicadas, Jumping Off Bridges, Black Metal) has an undeniable talent for creating very specific atmospheres within her films. Shot in the hazy sunshine of the Gulf Coast, Hellion captures the difficulties of a single, working class parent, carefully examining the effects that local economics can have on families. The gritty, handheld cinematography (Brett Pawlak) hearkens back to the glory days of 1970s American independent cinema while also reflecting the working class livelihoods of this East Texas community. Here is the debut trailer for Hellion,...

Writer-director Kat Candler (Cicadas, Jumping Off Bridges) has an undeniable knack for creating lush atmospheres within her films, developing cinematic worlds that relish in youthful ecstasy and naivete. The dreamlike visual qualities of Candler’s films play like not-so-distant memories of youth; yet the characters and their actions are incredibly realistic. All of Candler’s films remind me in one way or another of my own youth, and that right there is something very few filmmakers have ever captured. I hate to play favorites, but Candler is one of my favorite Austin-based filmmakers. Her latest film Hellion (which premiered at Sundance 2012) is programmed in what is clearly the strongest Texas Shorts program in SXSW Film history. I chatted with Candler on the eve of her regional premiere of Hellion to discuss her career as a filmmaker in Austin… What is life as a filmmaker in Austin like for you? I love living and working in Austin. I...

Kat Candler (Jumping Off Bridges, Cicadas) is a familiar face in the Austin film community -- whether as a lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin or as seen above mingling along with filmmakers at local screenings and film festivals, such as Carla L. Jackson and Kelvin Z. Phillips of A Swingin' Trio. I met Kat during SXSW Film in 2006, introduced by Lisa McWilliams of Mobile Film School. I was struck by the passion and creativity of both women. Candler was kind enough to give me a screener of her feature Jumping Off Bridges, an emotionally moving story of the impact of a parent's suicide on a young teenager.
Candler's new short film Hellion will premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, with multiple screenings prior to the narrative feature My Best Day. Candler has proved that she works well with young actors, and Hellion is no exception as she...

Recently, Drew Barrymore directed and starred in a feature called Whip It!, set in Austin, Texas, and based on a novel by a former Austinite, Shauna Cross. The film was shot in...Ann Arbor, Mich. Say what? Why would a town with a rich film culture and at least two major favorite-son film directors — Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater — miss out on hosting a project that's such an obvious fit? As usual, it's a money thing. Michigan — along with such states as New Mexico, Massachusetts, and Louisiana — currently offers producers hefty incentive packages to shoot on its soil. As Gary Bond, director of the Austin Film Commission, points out, the 8.25 percent sales-tax exemption and other incentives that Texas offers to filmmakers don't add up to the same breaks available elsewhere. Nevertheless, last January, Austin was named the No. 1 American movie city by MovieMaker magazine, beating out such incentives-rich locales as Albuquerque,...
