Eva Mattes, who turns 60 today, has been acting on stage and in front of the camera since she was twelve. Internationally, she'll probably always be associated with the New German Cinema. She was still a teenager when she appeared as a Vietnamese rape victim in Michael Verhoeven's o.k. (1970), which caused an uproar at the Berlinale. In 1979, Mattes won a Best Supporting Actress award in Cannes for her performance in Werner Herzog's Woyzeck. She'd previously worked with him on Stroszek (1977). She appeared in several films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and played him two years after his death in Ein Mann wie Eva. More recently, Mattes has appeared in Frieder Schlaich's Otomo (1999), Jean-Jacques Annaud's Enemy at the Gates (2001) and Percy Adlon's Mahler on the Couch (2010). » - David Hudson...

Before Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin, before Oscar Grant and Amadou Diallo, there was Frederic Otomo, an immigrant from Cameroon who was killed by police in the German city of Stuttgart twenty-five years ago this month. The year 1989 was a tense one for race relations: A Miami policeman’s fatal shooting of a black motorcyclist ignited three days of rioting; a white female runner was raped in New York by a black man, which lead to the wrongful arrest of “the Central Park Five;" and a sixteen-year-old boy named Yusef Hawkins was killed in Bensonhurst by gang of white youths. Against this backdrop of real-life horrors, Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing was released in theaters, further spreading a wave of racial paranoia. Like the recent spate of police killings of young black men, the case of Otomo, recounted and made visceral in a 1999 film starring actor Isaach de Bankole...

How come New York gets all the good stuff? And if you’re in the NY area then you’ll have an opportunity next month to get involved with Issach de Bankole.
I can think of few actors today who are as charismatic and compelling on the screen than him (can you?), and next month, in April, The Museum of Arts and Design in association with French Institute Alliance Francaise will present the month long series: Isaach de Bankole, An Unexpected Gentleman.
The program will consist of a film series including Otomo, Night on Earth and The Limits of Control among other films with De Bankole, and other events will include a one-on-one conversation with his frequent collaborator Jim Jarmusch; and on April 9th De Bankole will give an acting master class as well.
