Corpses smell bad!
JohnSeal5 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Manhunt is a somewhat grittier than usual martial arts epic featuring the usual convoluted plot, atrocious dubbing, and random editing. It's also probably the only kung fu film that references the classic Japanese ghost story Kwaidan, as two of its primary characters are a mother and daughter who scavenge the bodies of dead soldiers! As they disrobe the corpses--revealing bare male buttocks in all their glory--the daughter observes that the bodies smell bad, to which Mom responds, "of course! they're dead!" In between all the poorly choreographed fight scenes and unfunny comic relief, there's actually a bit more than usual for jaded film fans to enjoy: besides the aforementioned butt cheeks, there are a flock of crows pecking at the bodies, some really bad special effects, and a gratuitous shower scene. The Ocean Shores Video release features a decent if severely compromised pan and scan print, as well as an annoying copyright notice and company watermark. The organ-heavy score sounds like it was lifted from a spaghetti western and the psychedelic opening credits are kinda fun.
