Chen Kuan Tai vs. the Japanese
Leofwine_draca24 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
HERO FROM SHANGHAI is an efficient little kung fu movie with a Chinese-against-Japanese theme and a fine hero performance from the underrated Chen Kuan Tai, an actor who excelled during his roles for the Shaw Brothers studio and who continues to excel after them. The plot is pretty standard stuff, it has to be said, but there's a wealth of action throughout to keep it exciting and well-paced.

Essentially Kuan Tai works his way through a massive organisation of Japanese criminals in his bid to liberate Shanghai from their foreign oppressors. The action scenes are hard-hitting and fast-paced, culminating in a bloody brawl that deliberately harks back to the roles that made Kuan Tai's name with Shaw: namely BOXER FROM SHANTUNG and its follow-up, MAN OF IRON. Whichever title you see it under, HERO FROM SHANGHAI delivers.

Chen Kuan-Tai back when he could do no wrong
ckormos116 December 2015
It starts with still photos over the credits then Kuan Tai-Chen gets a rickshaw ride. It seems not many people can read. He is looking for a friend from his village. He is promptly framed for murder and beaten. He fights back. His rickshaw driver testifies to clear him. KTC vows to find the real killer. At the funeral a narrator tells KTC the names of all the visitors as they enter. Later a guy warns KTC to keep out of it. Next he is invited to some big shot for a talk. He suggests KTC kill the guy if he finds him. Next some guys try to rope him. Woo Gam says they were her men. Rickshaw guy keeps following him. Next he meets another woman and they talk. More talk in a big room and suddenly someone is killed with a knife and no one saw who did it.

I have this movie as a DVD, obvious bootleg variety and as a digital file. Both play to look wide screen but are actually cropped on all four sides. This gives an overall feeling that the scenes are too close up. There is a small amount of pan and scan. There are many scenes with abrupt cuts that play as if a missing a few feet of the film. The dialog is English by the A team of voice actors. The DVD has bonus material (You Tube videos) and it is excellent. It's hard for me not to like a Kuan Tai-Chen martial arts movie.
