DeVon Franklin has opened up about how working on The Pursuit of Happyness led him to want to dedicate his life to making faith-based movies.
The Miracles from Heaven producer, who recently signed a multi-year deal with Tyler Perry, had interned for Will Smith since he was a freshman and worked with him for several years before being asked to forge a faith-based marketing campaign for 2006’s The Pursuit of Happyness, Franklin told today’s AVPSummit in south Italy.
“As a person of faith that movie really spoke to me,” he said. “Domestically it almost made as much as Casino Royale and a lot of people attribute the faith-based marketing campaign to its success.”
The success of Pursuit of Happyness “was the first time I said, ‘Oh, who I am as a person can be good for the movie biz and the bottom line,” Franklin said. “That was the beginning...

The wait for “The Equalizer” Season 4 was extra-long, and especially brutal thanks to a life-or-death cliffhanger that left several key characters in danger. But, at last, the wait is over. Queen Latifah’s Robyn McCall returns to CBS this February, as a part of their Sunday night lineup.
Inspired by the 1980s spy series of the same name, which also has an ongoing film series adaptation starring Denzel Washington, “The Equalizer” follows Latifah’s McCall. Seemingly your average single mother raising teenage girl, McCall’s ordinary demeanor belies her highly-trained ex-CIA past, which she embraces to help those with nowhere else left to turn.

In the 54 years since Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) blazed a trail as the first Black female recipient of a TV Golden Globe, the list of small screen Black actresses who have won the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has grown to include 12 more names, including 2023 comedic and dramatic champs Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this roster has long since covered TV movies and both continuing program genres, no Black woman has yet been awarded a Golden Globe for a limited series performance. There is a decent chance of that soon changing, however, given the winning potential of possible 2024 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress contenders Uzo Aduba (“Painkiller”) and Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”).
Possible Golden Globes newcomer Fishback stars on Amazon Prime Video’s “Swarm” as Dre Greene, a mentally unstable young woman whose unhealthy obsession with a Beyoncé-esque pop star drives a wedge between her and her foster sister,...

Dolly Parton, sitcom star? It almost happened in the 1990s. Nearly 30 years ago, the iconic singer/actor was set to star in a comedy series for CBS. But even though Parton taped six episodes of her show, titled Heavens to Betsy, they never made it to air.
Dolly Parton was set to star in a CBS sitcom
Parton rose to fame as a country singer. But by the 1980s she was making waves as an actor thanks to roles in movies such as 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Steel Magnolias. Given her comedic chops, it’s not surprising that Parton considered making a move to TV.
In 1993, Touchstone Television announced that Parton would star in a CBS sitcom called Dixie’s Fixins’, about the romantic misadventures and mishaps of a cable cooking show host, the Washington Post reported. That show was scuttled before production began,...

A day after CBS announced the cancellation of Swat, series lead Shemar Moore took to social media to share an impassioned video of himself expressing his disappointment in how the decision was handled.
The network revealed Friday that the series, on which Moore has starred as LAPD Sgt. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson since its November 2017 launch, will not return after its season six finale airs May 19. The show — an update of the 1970s series of the same name — actually grew its total audience compared to its previous season, averaging 6.82 million viewers over seven days.
“It makes no sense,” Moore said of the cancellation in an Instagram video posted Saturday. “We’ve done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for.”

Tyler Perry is one of the world's most renowned entertainers — and he has a new film coming out (via Deadline). The award-winning producer will direct his fifth feature film for Netflix after helming multiple projects for the streamer, including the 2020 thriller "A Fall From Grace," the comedy "A Madea Homecoming," and the period drama "A Jazzman's Blues." Perry also has another project in the pipeline, the upcoming film "Six Triple Eight," which stars Hollywood heavyweights Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey, and Susan Sarandon, among others. The film is a World War II-set drama based on a 2019 WWII History magazine article by Kevin M. Hymel. It will focus on the 6888th battalion, the only all-Black and all-female battalion that served in World War II.

The 54th NAACP Image Awards, which aired on CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Saturday night, has wrapped. Queen Latifah hosted the proceedings, which honored the best in Black entertainment for the proceeding year. Inclusive awards that they are, the Image Awards often give a hat-tip to performers of color who aren’t Black, though: Tenoch Huerta Mejía won Best Supporting Actor for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which also won Outstanding Motion Picture.
That film received another big award in the form of Best Supporting Actress for Angela Bassett, who is by far now the frontrunner for the Academy Award. It was one of two awards of the night for Bassett, as she also won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “9-1-1.”

After Cicely Tyson’s performance in the two-part CBS drama “Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All” earned her a spot in the very first Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress SAG Award lineup, it took 26 years for another Black woman to be recognized by the organization for an actual miniseries. The subset started by Tyson in 1995 now includes five actresses, with the latest entrant being “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” cast member Niecy Nash-Betts. If she takes this year’s prize, Nash-Betts will be the fifth Black woman to ever prevail in this category and the first to be honored for a multi-part limited program.
Besides Tyson and Nash-Betts, the remaining three Black actresses who have been nominated by the Screen Actors Guild for their work on miniseries are Michaela Coel, Kerry Washington, and Cynthia Erivo. Before she could elaborate any further, Latifah had to ask the next obvious question: Is she going to be one of the dancers? "No, not one of those men," Jada clarified while laughing. "I can't really reveal it yet but I'm very excited about it. It's been a lot of...

This Thursday the Queen Latifah Show will introduce the world to Susan Bennett, the woman who claims to be behind Apple iPhone's original Siri. Bennett revealed herself last week in order to set the record straight after a tech news site gave another voiceover actress credit for Siri. The veteran voiceover artist has been working since the 70s. Bennett says she made the original Siri recordings in July 2005, although she had no idea what they were for. Like everyone else she first heard her own voice as Siri on an iPhone 4S. Bennett will tell Queen Latifah about making the recordings and how it feels to reveal herself to the world.

It was almost exactly 1 1/2 years ago today when it was announced that Will Smith, his Overbrook Entertainment cohorts, and Queen Latifah were teaming up with Sony Pictures TV to produce a syndicated daytime talk show for the Queen to host. Details have been scarce, except that the program was scheduled to debut in 2013, and, after some competitive bidding between networks, CBS landed what will be called The Queen Latifah Show (recall the Queen once hosted a talk show, also titled The Queen Latifah Show, which had a rather short run, from 1999 to 2001. Expectations for this upcoming new program are probably higher). The show -...

Chuck D has described Public Enemy's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a victory for hip-hop. Public Enemy were announced along with Donna Summer, Rush, Randy Newman and Heart as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's latest class on Tuesday (December 11).
In an interview with Billboard, Chuck D expressed hopes that Public Enemy's induction will open the door for more hip-hop acts to make the Hall of Fame. "It's not an achievement for Public Enemy per se as much as I think it's an achievement for hip-hop and rap music to be legitimised," he explained. The star continued: "Us going in is a win for our peers like Kurtis Blow or Krs-One, Queen Latifah and [the already-inducted] Run Dmc, the Beastie Boys, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5. They're our peers, and I feel thankful we're (more)...

Exclusive: Sony Pictures TV‘s The Queen Latifah Show is now a go for a fall 2013 launch. I’ve learned that, in a competitive situation, the daily syndicated talk show, executive produced by Latifah, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has gone to the CBS TV Stations in a premium deal that will have the strip on the 16 CBS Owned & Operated stations. The Queen Latifah Show will feature celebrity interviews, human interest stories, comedy, pop culture and musical performances. It is expected to showcase Queen Latifah’s talents, blending comedy and music into her hosting duties. Shortly after the dust settled on this fall’s syndicated daytime talk show launches that failed to produce a breakout hit, Sony TV began conversations with station groups about the Queen Latifah talker, garnering interest from multiples places. I hear negotiations went down to the wire with the CBS and NBC station groups. The...

When I wasn't playing dress-up or scribbling in journals as a child, you could find me dancing or singing. I watched Bet's "Video Soul" and "Planet Groove" with my big brother Daryl and created dance routines to albums ordered from Columbia House CD Club. My house was always filled with music. And how could I forget the times my mom would let me stay up past bedtime to watch "The Arsenio Hall Show."
As I grew older, I looked to artists like Michael Jackson, Queen Latifah and Brandy on how to dress. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who has experimented with tube socks and penny loafers, oversized Cross Colours jackets and box braid hairstyles.
In honor of Black Music Month, we're taking a look back at artists that have left a powerful imprint on not just me, but the rest of the world with their unique sound and style.

Queen Latifah is returning to daytime TV for another shot at her own chat show.
The rapper-turned-actress landed her own series, The Queen Latifah Show, in 1999, but it was axed after only two seasons.
The star is now preparing to return to the small screen with the help of Will Smith and his wife Jada, who will produce the show, which is slated to debut in 2013.
