We’ve been blessed with some really great superhero movies this year. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Wonder Woman have all made lots of cash and achieved much critical acclaim, but the one that will go down as the best is probably Logan. The mature, gritty blockbuster gave us a much more grounded take on the character of Wolverine, with some excellent work from director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman that ensured it was a complete triumph.
Let’s not forget the stellar performance from Patrick Stewart, either, as a nonagenarian Charles Xavier, now suffering from dementia. It was perhaps the actor’s finest work in the whole X-Men movie franchise and given that it was his last time appearing as Xavier alongside Jackman’s Logan, it was also a very emotional watch. The two actors are now retired from all things mutants, of course,...

Before enrolling in film school and making his feature film debut, Father and Son’s director Luong Dinh Dung worked as a mechanic, miner and blacksmith. His non-professional cast comprises a doctor, a schoolboy and a medal-winning former wrestler. Principal photography was slated to begin in 2013, but was suspended for two years when its outdoor sets — all purposely built in one of Vietnam’s most far-flung corners — were destroyed by rainstorms.
Rather than a distraction, these peculiar anecdotes only add to Father and Son’s sensitive and subtle charm. Based on the very simple premise of two villagers' bumpy descent...

21 Best Foreign Language Film submissions and 16 Golden Globe submissions make this festival an important event in Los Angeles.
Now in its third year, The Asian World Film Festival is held at the Arclight in Culver City. While still dealing with growing pains, especially finding its audience, it still hosts a great community of film lovers and filmmakers. My wish is that next year it will reach farther to the Asian filmmaking community in L.A. and to the ethnic communities of L.A. who would love to see the works of their homeland filmmakers which are making their way toward Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Films.

For “Spielberg,” an HBO documentary about the highest-grossing director in film history, director and producer Susan Lacy (“American Masters”) conducted 30-plus hours of interviews with Steven Spielberg. She also spoke to more than 80 of his family members, friends, and collaborators, among them Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Robert Zemeckis, J.J. Abrams, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Oprah Winfrey, Cate Blanchett, Drew Barrymore, and late “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial” screenwriter Melissa Mathison.
All of that makes for a long movie — it clocks at nearly two-and-a-half hours — but the documentary has its rewards. Here’s the highlights of Lacy’s look at the 70-year-old icon.

Father and son face up to mortality in this beautiful debut feature from a young Indian writer-director
Twenty-six-year-old Indian writer-director Shubhashish Bhutiani’s nimble debut feature trails Rajiv (Adil Hussain) as he accompanies his dying father Daya (Lalit Behl) to Hotel Salvation, a sort of spiritual hospice on the banks of the Ganges. Guests are permitted to stay free of charge for 15 days, in the hope that they experience “salvation” in the moments before death (marijuana-laced lassi optional). If it sounds a little bit Eat Pray Love, it is – though Bhutiani keeps a fairly tight rein on former “famous writer” Daya’s divine journey, paying more attention to the knotty dynamic between father and son. In this sense, the film works more as a kind of reverse Toni Erdmann, with Rajiv finally turning off his phone and shouldering the burden of his cantankerous father. It looks beautiful too, with night-time...

“Kingdom,” Byron Balasco’s excellent drama series on Audience Network, came to a stunning close Wednesday night. After confirming a painful loss alluded to the week prior and ending on the bruised and battered body of Alvey Kulina (Frank Grillo), post-fight, fans may be struggling to cope with a devastating ending that encouraged introspection more than it provided easy answers.
“The conclusion of the show is about having done the work,” Jonathan Tucker said in an interview with IndieWire. “We have bled, we have cried, we have laughed, and now it’s about allowing the work to find itself; the magic to find itself; the authenticity to find itself.”

Funko has a new Groot Pop! vinyl figure from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for collectors. This is the teenage Groot figure!
Teenage Groot makes a hilarious first appearance in one of the five post-credits scenes in the film. He ended up throwing a lot of attitude to Peter Quill, who is frustrated with him. It was a fun little surprise that fans weren't expecting.
I'd love to see that relationship explored more in the movies. They had a nice father and son relationship in the movie and then at the end with baby Groot sitting on Peter's lap listening to the song "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens.
Anyway, the teenage Groot Pop! figure is currently available for order exclusively on Amazon. I also found this other version of teenage Groot online as well that will eventually be available. It was posted on Amazon then pulled off for some reason.

My dad went in for surgery this week, which (Thor be praised) is a new experience for our family - the first hospital visit, the first recovery period, the first time dealing with that set of worries. And no need to worry, after all: he's fine. As such though, watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on Friday night, I was simultaneously hit by my own desire to roll my eyes at yet another comic book movie whose sole purpose and function seemed to be the plumbing of Daddy Issues(™), and my simultaneous, in situ understanding that yeah, feelings about fathers are some complicated, complicated shit. By the time Cat Stevens' "Father and Son" was joining the soundtrack in the final moments of the film,...

Um... What? Did I hear that right? As I was looking for some interesting things to post, I came across some information that Doritos has made a hybrid Doritos bag and music player that looks like a tape deck on the bag. The best part is, it plays the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack. Of all the things I never expected to happen, this is probably the top of the list.
Doritos and Marvel have a cross promotion going, but who would have thought they would make a Doritos bag that plays music!? In some strange way, it makes sense. A strong element in the Guardians of the Galaxy films is music. There is a tape deck that plays Star-Lord's music that has both an important role in the film and has great tunes for the film. Even the title of the film is called Vol. 2, reminiscent of an album release.

Marvel Music/Hollywood Records have released the digital versions of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 songs-only album and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 original score album by composer Tyler Bates (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “John Wick Chapter 2,” “Watchmen”).
The film opens in U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is filled with great action, humor and performances, but it is also infused with a new mixed tape and soundtrack, a dynamic that resonated deeply with audiences in the first film as evidenced by the success of the soundtrack album. The Grammy-nominated “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first soundtrack album consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart. The album was certified Platinum by the R.I.A.A.

The “Guardians of the Galaxy” films are beloved for their eclectic soundtracks, thanks to a heady mix of classic rock, pop, and old-school R&B. We don’t usually praise them for their David Hasselhoff rapping — but here we are. On Wednesday, Marvel released the set list for the “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” soundtrack, which features tunes from the trailers like “Fox on the Run” by Sweet and “Chains” by Fleetwood Mac, but also other classics like “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens and “Mr. Blue Sky” by Elo. With just a few days until the sequel to the amazing Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) comes out, news has already hit that writer and director James Gunn will indeed be returning to make the third installment.
Anyone who saw the first film will know that its great mix of comic book mayhem, mixed with its incredible soundtrack and hilarity, will be excited about the follow up, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which hits cinemas on April 27.
This time we have the full Guardian line up, set a couple of months after the events of the first, with Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and even Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) on board the rebuilt Milano. The only thing more exciting than “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” the hotly anticipated sequel to James Gunn’s sci-fi superhero comedy, is the fact that it comes with a different kind of sequel: A second installment of the equally delightful “Awesome Mix,” a list of songs so great they deserve to be sent into space in case alien life forms ever find them.
Not just any other soundtrack, the songs in the “Awesome Mix” often comment on the action of the film, using music to enhance a scene in a nod to the golden age of Hollywood musicals.

From “Spirit in the Sky” to Blue Swede’s infectious “Hooked on a Feeling” – a song that has since become synonymous with Marvel’s galactic anti-heroes – the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy was arguably the most crowd-pleasing element of James Gunn’s 2014 sleeper hit. And that’s really saying something, given the film featured a talking tree and a warrior that struggled to wrap his head around the concept of a metaphor.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 now teetering on the verge of its theatrical release, the level of interest in Star-Lord and the crew has grown astronomically in the past three years, though if there’s one ingredient that James Gunn has carried over from the first movie, it’s fist-pumping power ballads. Now, Rolling Stone has officially cracked open Awesome Mix Vol. 2 to reveal the songs set to feature throughout Guardians 2.

Family can sometimes drive us up a wall. At holiday dinners, families like to poke their noses in others business with questions about the future or current romantic partners or career choices, and the answers they are given are typically met with slight condescension. With every intention of defending ourselves, we bite our tongues to preserve the only time of week, month, or year we see our families. This tense familial setting is the foundation of the film “Ice Mother,” directed by Bohdan Sláma (“Something Like Happiness” “Country Teacher”).

As A Lawyer, Ralph Bellamy Was Indefensible
It’s a good thing this story wasn’t part of the actual series. Otherwise we might not all be here right now.
I’m so old, I watched Perry Mason first run not on the reruns playing on every channel this side of C-span. But it’s not why I became a lawyer. Perry Mason was unrealistic. A murder trial every week where the real murderer was dumb enough to sit in the courtroom and watch. No, Perry Mason didn’t make me want to become a lawyer. The Defenders did.
The Defenders was a show about a middle-aged attorney – played by E.G. Marshall – and his fresh-out-of-law-school son – played by a young, pre-permed Robert Reed. Although the show had some murder mystery episodes, most dealt with some of the complex and serious issues of the time; abortion, religious intolerance, capital punishment, civil rights,...

Looking dapper in a black suit, Jackie will prove that he has still got the all the charms of being the quintessential ladies’ man as he answers Karan’s questions with his unique style and panache. From calling himself younger than the new generation of actors to stating that love is overrated to professing his eternal love for Madhuri Dixit as the woman who still makes his heart go Dhak Dhak, Jaggu Dada is his usual candid, cool classic self.

2017 may have just begun, but it already has its first superlative motion picture release. And no, sadly, it’s not the thirty-seventh (give or take) entry in the Underworld franchise. Instead, it comes from the art film world, and specifically one of world cinema’s most interesting directors working today.
After a little over a decade of finding niche pockets of support in niche pockets of film intellectual circles, 2014 gave director Eugene Green one of his most successful outings. The superlative La Sapienza in many ways introduced the auteur to a much broader selection of cineastes, and with actor Fabrizio Rongione once again by his side Green has made yet another skeletal, beautifully crafted drama.
Entitled The Son Of Joseph, Green’s film riffs on the nativity story, telling the story of a Parisian teen by the name of Vincent (Victor Ezenfis). Living with his single mother Marie, a nurse played by Natacha Regnier,...

As the widely acknowledged home of golf, Scotland holds a particular attraction for both professional and amateur players, who revere the region’s renowned courses and celebrate its pivotal place in the history of the sport. Central to that heritage are the names Tom Morris (known as Old Tom) and Tommy Morris (Young Tom), 19th century originators of the contemporary game’s most distinguishing features, many of them detailed in Kevin Cook’s 2007 book, Tommy's Honor: The Story of Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris, Golf's Founding Father and Son.

Jim Hosking’s Us-set feature debut, about a serial killer who smears his naked body in cooking fat before committing murders, is revolting and funny
Bad taste is extruded from this outrageously revolting movie like poisoned mince from a rusty meat grinder. And, despite having neglected to smoke the hundredweight of weed I really needed to appreciate it properly … I did laugh. There’s actually a touch of real inspiration in the final few minutes. It’s the Us-set feature debut from British director Jim Hosking, with Ben Wheatley serving as an executive producer: a macabre display of grossout-grotesque, with a touch of John Waters, Harmony Korine, David Walliams and Matt Lucas. (Little America could almost be an alternative title.) Brayden (Sky Elobar) is a sad, overweight, middle-aged guy who lives with his revolting father Ronnie (Michael St Michaels), a retired disco manager whom Brayden suspects – correctly – of being the notorious Greasy Strangler,...

So yesterday afternoon I turned on the TV to watch the live Global Citizen concert and caught one of my favorite artists, Yusuf Islam – formerly known as Cat Stevens – performing songs “Wild World” and, joined by Eddie Vedder, “Father and Son,” both from one of his best albums, 1970’s Tea for the Tillerman. I was singing along and getting back into my ‘60s groove when, all of a sudden, right as he started to sing another song, fucking MSNBC went to commercials!!!!
C’mon, are you kidding me? And to make it even more frustrating, the network did one of those “little boxes” so that you could see Mr. Islam singing, but you couldn’t hear him. Aaagh! Global Citizen’s mission is to end extreme poverty around the world, so I found it extremely disturbing and in incredibly bad taste to have a concert meant to raise awareness and...

It’s clear within the first few minutes of first-time director Adam Smith’s Trespass Against Us — as a muddy Subaru races after a bounding rabbit in the U.K. countryside, with a young boy at the wheel — that the film to follow will be a disorienting experience. Indeed, it’s one that plunges the audience into thematically murky waters. Crime thriller or offbeat family drama? Darkly funny or way too dreary? Trespass has all of these elements, and ultimately, this thick stew is unsatisfying.
Yet the film, which made its long-delayed world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, is no complete miss, either. Stars Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson see to that, aided by music-video vet Smith’s often striking visuals and a unique setting. Trespass just never quite gels into a successful whole. Fassbender fans will enjoy his role as a tough but loving family man, but...

There's no doubt that Steve Irwin's legacy continues to live on past his untimely death. And as the famous wildlife conservationist's family prepares to reach the tenth anniversary of his passing, Steve's father Bob Irwin has revealed a particularly heart-warming note he received from his then 32-year-old son in 1998. In the letter, which is included in Bob's book The Last Crocodile Hunter: A Father and Son Legacy, Steve reflects on the lessons his parents taught him. "Probably one of the most unfortunate things in a 'Bloke's Life' is that it takes over 30 years to realize how essential you have been to build my character, my ethics and,...

Long before Jake Gyllenhaal hit it big as a troubled teen in Donnie Darko or a cowboy romancing Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain, he played a bashful young boy in 1991's City Slickers, so embarrassed by his father's humdrum ad job that he introduced him as a submarine commander to his class. But while City Slickers didn't grant Gyllenhaal much screen time, the experience elicits a vivid recollection for the actor even 25 years later.
