Engulfing audiences in a cinematic world where the line between reality and make-believe become blurred is the stuff movies are made of -- but what happens when the movie becomes so visceral, we start to question its truthfulness?
Horror films in particular can walk that fine line of clever filmmaking and creating an unsettling, nagging feeling that what we're watching is someone's actual terror. Many of these films use the pseudo-documentary/mockumentary style to disarm audiences, conflating a typically non-fiction setup with entirely fictional elements. Meanwhile, others rely on crafty marketing campaigns to stir up curiosity, suspicion, controversy, or all of the above. Whether a movie informs audiences that the story ahead of them is based on true events or the director opts for frenetic handheld camerawork, there are some movies executed so well that movie-goers will debate their authenticity long after the credits roll.

Since the 2000s, horror filmmakers have been quick to embrace the pseudo-documentary format, also known as found footage: it can be used to make cheap but very scary films that viewers can easily believe because it seems like everything on screen really happened.
The Blair Witch Project popularized the found footage format and defined its cinematic language for years to come: handheld camera, jittery editing, improvised dialogue, and grounded performances.
At times, it's hard to make out what's happening to the characters in the pitch black and monotonous forest landscapes, but it's that sense of oppressive uncertainty and reportage realism that has made fans of the genre around the world fearful and excited.
But one film took what The Blair Witch Project did to another level – Rec.

I used to simply think there were a lot of exorcist movies. There are, but that doesn’t quite say it. There are so many exorcist movies that starting long ago they began to add up to something larger than the sum of their writhing, low-devil-voice-talking, mottled-gray-skin-with-carved-crucifix parts. When “The Exorcist” came out 50 years ago, it fed into the rise of the new fundamentalist culture. Because the whole thing about “The Exorcist” is that it felt like it was bigger than a movie. It was making an announcement: The devil is here — and if that is so, maybe it means God is here too.
That’s why exorcist movies never went away. They feed our primal ecclesiastical horror nostalgia by feeding something else: our desire to glimpse the devil in the flesh (and maybe God as a bonus). It helped, in a strange way, that the vast majority of exorcist films are B-movie trash.

In honor of her receiving this year’s AFI Life Achievement Award, Nicole Kidman is being celebrated with a career retrospective at Nashville’s non-profit film center, The Belcourt, starting next week. Having undergone extensive renovations and preservations in 2016, The Belcourt is now one of Nashville’s most beloved homes for the arts, attracting audiences from all over Tennessee and the Southeast region, as well as visitors from across the country and globe. The theater programs over 300 films a year across 4,500 screenings, some of which feature Q&As with filmmakers and scholars.
Born in Hawaii, but raised in Australia, Kidman made her feature acting debut at the age of 16 and has been working steadily ever since. The iconic stars of the 1999 horror sensation, The Blair Witch Project, have finally decided to open up against Lionsgate as plans for a revival of their landmark film move forward. In an in-depth interview with Variety, the trio—Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams—revealed their ongoing struggles with missing out on the monumental profits generated by their pioneering found-footage thriller, which grossed approximately $248 million globally. Despite the film’s overwhelming success, the actors originally signed contracts that precluded them from sharing in the box office returns. Now, they seek compensation and meaningful consultation on future projects that use...

How much money do you need to make a good movie? This question seems to be an eternal one for filmmakers, but at the same time some of them are successful in creating quite inexpensive masterpieces.
Here are 5 low-budget flicks that became big hits, loved by Redditors.
1. The Blair Witch Project - $200,000–750,000 vs $248.6 million
First comes a cultish horror with a budget estimated under $1 million that still managed to rake in more than 200x its cost. The story about college filmmakers on their way to make a movie about a local myth is indeed a must-watch that is worth such a hype.
2. Napoleon Dynamite (2004) - $400,000 vs $46.1 million
You probably didn't know that one of the most iconic coming-of-age comedies was created on a tight budget. The film’s lead, Jon Heder, who portrayed the titular nerdy high-school student, was initially only paid $1,000 for his work on this hit.
3. Clerks (1994) -...

The Blair Witch Project would have broke the internet when it came out, if there was internet back then. The independent horror film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and then began raking in profits in the theaters. Plus, there were VHS sales and all that creepy Blair Witch merch, and then multiple spinoffs and sequels. Ironically, the crew that played dead after the release to ensure the movies’ success, barely saw a dime of those proceeds.
The Blair Witch actors have been embroiled in legal battles with Artisan for off and on for decades. The actors did get paid, but it was literally crumbs compared to what millions of dollars that the film made due to contracts they signed at the beginning of production.

Let’s take a ride in the way-back machine and step out in 1999, when a little independent film called The Blair Witch Project became an iconic film. We won’t argue about whether or not it was the first found footage film, instead stating the indisputable fact that it was the most successful one (not to mention one of the most profitable independent films) of all time.
At the heart of The Blair Witch Project were three unknown actors: Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams. It was each of their first films, and none of them expected it to become a massive hit.
The production was unique in that the actors were encouraged to improvise most of their dialogue. There was a screenplay, but it mostly contained the events that were to take place, and there were times when only one of the actors knew what was going to happen next.

For the trio of actors who almost singlehandedly turned "The Blair Witch Project" into a cultural phenomenon and one of the most terrifying horror films of the last quarter century, what should've been the dream roles of a lifetime have instead turned into a living nightmare.
In the late 1990s, young and up-and-coming performers Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard found themselves joining an extremely low-budget indie production that was then titled "The Black Hills Project." The concept was simple: The three leads would be filming approximately 10 minutes of footage as part of a fictional horror documentary, playing the part of student filmmakers searching for evidence of a local legend known as the Blair Witch, and who vanished without a trace in the Maryland woods. Not only were the three required to sign off on clauses that would allow filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez to use their...

The Blair Witch Project cast came out against Lionsgate after the announcement of a new reboot at CinemaCon this year. The year also marks the 25th anniversary of the project, and the cast now goes into detail about how they struggled after their massively successful independent film. Haxan Films hired Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard for different roles in 1997.

Back in April, it was announced that Lionsgate and Blumhouse Productions have made a multi-picture pact that will see Blumhouse reimagining horror classics from the Lionsgate library – and the development and production of a new The Blair Witch Project is the first project on that slate. That announcement has inspired the stars of the original film – Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams – to start speaking up about the fact that they have never been properly financially compensated for the roles they played into turning the original film into a massive hit that spawned a franchise.

Oscar-nominated 2022 feature “TÁR” made a chilling statement onscreen, but the film appears to have sourced one particular audio clip from an iconic horror movie: “The Blair Witch Project,” directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez.
Heather Donahue said during an interview with Variety that “TÁR” used her final scream from “The Blair Witch Project” for a key scene of its own — and without permission. In “TÁR,” the titular composer Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) is running in the woods and hears a startling cry from an unseen woman. According to Donahue, that scream was sampled from the 1999 Lionsgate film “The Blair Witch Project,” heard at the very end of the film as her character appears to die offscreen.
Donahue, who now goes by Rei Hance on social media and elsewhere but is attributed as Donahue in the Variety piece, said she alerted “The Blair Witch Project” distributor Lionsgate to the unauthorized...

In the summer of 1999, Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard were trapped in a strange sort of limbo. “The Blair Witch Project,” their debut feature, had exploded out of the Sundance Film Festival that January to become one of the most influential horror movies of the past 25 years — and, with a $35,000 budget, one of the most profitable independent films ever made. And yet Donahue was still puttering to her temp job in a 1984 Toyota Celica, before it broke down right underneath a billboard with her face on it. Williams’ boss kept asking him why he was still moving furniture in Westchester, N.Y., when he was on the cover of Newsweek. And Leonard found himself serving food to his agent at a catering gig days before he appeared on “The Tonight Show.”
“My agent asked me what the fuck I was doing,” Leonard says. “I said, ‘You know...

If you follow my writing in any way, you probably know that The Blair Witch Project is one of my favourite ever movies. Not just horror movies. It was the first horror movie I watched at the cinema and it was probably the first film I really got into in a big way. I bought the books, the t-shirt, read the newspaper articles and followed what I could on the website (I’m not sure I even had the internet at home at the time). So any film that is clearly influenced by the found-footage classic is going to get some love from me.

Plot: A young artist gets stranded in an extensive, immaculate forest in western Ireland, where, after finding shelter, she becomes trapped alongside three strangers, stalked by mysterious creatures each night.
Review: There’s no denying that there’s a tremendous amount of pressure on writer/director Ishana Shyamalan with her debut feature. Her father’s reputation will always follow her but let’s not pretend like that’s entirely a bad thing. Unlike many first-time directors, she was able to hone her craft as a 2nd Unit Director on many M Night productions. This allows her to skip some of the steps common for most young filmmakers, and avoid easy trappings. If there’s one thing that’s clear after experiencing The Watchers: we most definitely have two Shyamalans out in the world, for better or worse.

The legend of the Frogman comes to the screen in the found footage movie Frogman, which joins the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox streaming service tomorrow!
In Frogman, “In the summer of 1999, a 12-year-old named Dallas Kyle captured footage of the mythical Frogman, but no one believed it was real. Twenty years later, Dallas, now an amateur filmmaker struggling to turn his passion into a career, returns to Loveland with friends Amy and Scotty determined to obtain irrefutable proof that the Frogman exists.
“But what starts as an innocent documentary soon turns into a Lovecraftian nightmare as Dallas uncovers the horrific secrets hidden beneath Loveland’s idyllic surface.”
Nathan Tymoshuk, Chelsey Grant, Benny Barrett and Justen Jones star.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her mini-review out of Popcorn Frights 2023, “Director Anthony Cousins takes on the cryptic Frogman via found footage in his feature directorial debut, co-written with John Karsko. In it, a trio...

“The Watchers” is the first film directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the 24-year-old daughter of M. Night Shyamalan. Its title refers to a race of spindly ash-gray monsters who haunt an Irish woods, gathering at night around a concrete fortress where the film’s four characters have holed up in a state of semi-permanent refuge. The building has just one room, an entire wall of which is a two-way mirror through which the Watchers peer, all because..they like to watch.
At the same time, the title could almost be referring to anyone who will watch this movie with eyes on the inevitable question of how much of a chip off the old Shyamalan block it is. Is “The Watchers” a glossy/clever mystery horror thriller? Yes. Did Ishana Night Shyamalan, whose father is one of the producers, write the movie as well as direct it? Yes (though she adapted...

A couple of months ago, Paramount and Miramax announced that they are reviving the Scary Movie horror parody series to bring a Scary Movie 6 to theatres sometime in 2025 – so we felt this was the perfect time to give the first movie in the franchise, the 2000 release Scary Movie (watch it Here), the Revisited treatment. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above!
Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans from a screenplay written by the team of Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Buddy Johnson, Phil Beauman, Jason Friedberg, and Aaron Seltzer, Scary Movie has the following synopsis: Defying the very notion of good taste, Scary Movie out-parodies the pop culture parodies with a no-holds barred assault on the most popular images and talked-about moments from recent films, television and commercials. The film boldly fires barbs at the classic scenes from Scream, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, I Know What You Did Last Summer,...

"Coherence" is one of the best sci-fi thrillers there is -- the type of movie that breaks your brain in the best possible way. It's a mind-bending movie that tells a grand scale story in a small scale setting, but without the need for diagrams to explain its plot à la "Primer." In this regard, it's the more accessible version of that cult classic.
In a nutshell, "Coherence" is the kind of low-budget indie genre movie that tells a simple story and leaves an impact, with its filmmakers going on to make bigger-budget movies. It is not, however, the kind of film that seems designed to spawn a franchise. Yet, somehow, more than a decade after its release, it appears director James Ward Byrkit is developing a sequel — and he's recruited producer Kate Andrews from the spectacularly twisted "It's What's Inside" to join the project.

Jason Blum and co. are bringing back the pickaxes as they get ready to reboot the My Bloody Valentine franchise.
Freddy Krueger. Jason Voorhees. Michael Myers. Jigsaw. There’s a lot of iconic killers in horror franchises, but there’s one that might have slipped past you; Harry Warden.
Harry Warden was the slightly supernatural killer in 1981’s My Bloody Valentine and while the film never became a hit in its own time, Blumhouse is looking to reboot it as reported first by Bloody Disgusting.
My Bloody Valentine is only the latest in Blumhouse’s reboot plans. The studio, headed by Jason Blum, is also working on a new Blair Witch Project film and have previously released a remake of Fantasy Island and of course, the new Halloween and The Exorcist sequels.

Last month, we learned that Lionsgate and Blumhouse Productions have made a multi-picture pact that will see Blumhouse reimagining horror classics from the Lionsgate library, with the first project on that slate being the development and production of a reboot of The Blair Witch Project. Now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have revealed that Blumhouse is already planning a reboot of another Lionsgate property: My Bloody Valentine! No further details have been shared.
Directed by George Mihalka from a screenplay by John Beaird (and a story by Stephen Miller), the original My Bloody Valentine was released in 1981 and has the following synopsis: Twenty years ago, a tragic accident in a mine on St. Valentine’s Day took the lives of five miners. The disaster occurred while supervisors left their posts to attend the town’s annual Valentine’s Day dance. The only survivor, Harry Warden, was confined to a mental institution after the ordeal.

The darkness enveloped me, and despite the summer heat outside, the air in the building was cool. I sat in silence, intently focused, anticipating what happened next, but not quite prepared. I tensed up upon seeing the spectral woman directly ahead of me. She silently floated, translucent and seemingly unaware — until at last facing me and lunging with a guttural growl as her face distorted into some horrific entity.

Stephen King has been terrifying his audience since his first full-length novel, Carrie, released in 1974. The world has come to know him as the ‘King of Horror’ and rightfully so. Whether it is the story of a sinister presence in an empty hotel or the trauma caused by Pennywise, the author sure knows how to keep his readers up at night. His books have been adapted into films which are equally, if not more, petrifying.
It (2017) based on Stephen King’s namesake novel | New Line Cinema
However, the question is, is there anything that terrifies the man who has made scaring others into a living? Well, there might be one such film out there. Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project is a unique take on the horror genre that uses the found-footage technique to scare its audience, including Stephen King who had to turn his screen off without watching it to the end.

What scares Stephen King? The legendary horror author has made a career (and a fortune) frightening us all with his tales of terror. But what gets under King's skin? What gives him the creeps? "Pet Sematary" was famously sold as the "Stephen King novel that scared Stephen King," mostly because King thought the book was too damn bleak but published it to fulfill a contractual obligation.
But what about horror works by other people? Are there horror movies that give the master of horror the heebie jeebies? As it turns out, there's one movie in particular King has claimed scared him. In fact, it scared him so much that the first time he watched it he requested it be turned off before the film even ended. That film: "The Blair Witch Project," the blockbuster indie horror movie that became a cultural phenomenon when it arrived in 1999.

Horror movies use different tropes to scare the audience, with the most obvious of them being jumpscares that are waiting for a viewer around the corner together with a loud nasty sound. However, some genre’s staples manage to creep you out and haunt your mind without using this technique.
Here are 7 inventive, yet extremely frightening horrors, handpicked by Redditors.
1. Sinister (2012)
First comes Ethan Hawke’s supernatural flick, following a disgraced true-crime writer, who finds films depicting relentless murders in his new house.

Stephen King may not be scared of what everyone finds creepy in his book adaptations, but there’s only one movie that the proclaimed author still freaks out about.
Being a big fan of the horror genre himself, King opened up about his top 10 modern horror films back in the day, and one of them is indeed something that causes numerous heated discussions among many viewers.
Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the 1999 supernatural movie The Blair Witch Project kicked it off as an independent low-budget project that later on transformed into a huge hit.
The film initially follows three student filmmakers who are set to hike in the woods in Maryland in an attempt to film a documentary about a local creepy legend, “The Blair Witch”. The movie then adapts a “found footage” format as the characters mysteriously disappear in the woods and only their camera can help discover what really happened.

Some people are easy to scare; others, not so much. And then, there are people like Stephen King — the King of Horror and the man behind some of the most popular, disturbing, and terrifying horror novels in history. King loves his horrors raw and is hard to impress… And yet, this one film proved to be too much even for him.
How to Scare the King of Horror 101
Stephen King often reviews horror movies. The man loves his job, and he loves the sheer terror a good horror instills into its viewers or readers. But at only one instance did the celebrated author admit to dropping a film halfway through. King described it as “the worst nightmare you ever had, the one you woke from gasping and crying with relief because you thought you were buried alive.”
“I asked my son, who was watching with me, to turn the damn thing off.

Australian director George Miller made his first feature film, "Mad Max," in 1979. It was a very low-budget affair costing about $200,000. The film takes place in the near future when the Earth is running low on oil and civilization is just beginning to crumble. "Mad" Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) is a road cop tasked with reigning in the chaos. "Mad Max" was decidedly low-fi, but it struck a chord with audiences, ultimately earning almost $100 million worldwide. It remains one of the most profitable movies of all time, comparable only to "The Blair Witch Project," "Paranormal Activity," and "Deep Throat." Miller would go on to make several sequels to "Mad Max" in 1981, 1985, and 2015. The fifth film in the series, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," is hitting theaters this month, with a potential sixth entry, "Mad Max: The Wasteland," in the early planning stages.

Unlike big-budget blockbusters that often depend on famous faces or explosive (and expensive) set pieces to draw audiences into the theater, the horror genre has been thriving for decades with no-name actors, shoestring budgets, and still pulling in huge profits thanks to a quality idea that audiences want to see. If the characters in the film are more than likely not going to make it to the end credits, there's no need to shell out the dough for a household name when they're just going to be killed off.
Fortunately, horror films also frequently inspire unprovoked reactions from audiences that work better than any marketing campaign ever could. A24 struck gold when audience members were reportedly fainting during preview screenings of "Talk to Me," which certainly helped skyrocket the film's popularity and contributed to it becoming the production company's highest-grossing horror film, ever, even surpassing Ari Aster's "Hereditary."

Horrors are obviously one of the most demanded movie genres, as people love to get their nerves shaken by the scary tales. However, we’d dare to say you didn’t know these horror gems were so successful at the box office they earned 100 times their budgets.
Here are 5 such hits of the genre, now available online for streaming.
1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Where to watch: Prime
First comes one of the most influential horror films, as it’s the origin of both modern slashers and found-footage movies. It follows a group of young people, who fall victim to a family of cannibals on their way to visit an old homestead, and was such a banger at the time that it made $30.9 million against a budget estimated between $80K and $140K.
2. Halloween (1978)

The Golden Raspberry is one of the most important industry anti-prizes. Every year, the worst movies of the season are nominated for it: from failed blockbusters to dramas that look more like comedies. But often the winners are simply misunderstood masterpieces.
Some of these underrated films were chosen by Reddit users.
1. The Blair Witch Project, 1999
Can you believe it? The movie that changed the horror industry was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Anti-Award in the category Worst Picture. Maybe, from a certain point of view, even this kind of PR benefits the movie, but to be honest, The Blair Witch Project had no chance to "win" that year – it was up against Adam Sandler's Big Daddy, The Haunting, and Will Smith's Wild Wild West.
2. The Bodyguard, 1992

Back in 1999, when the Internet was still relatively new and everyone was used to pixelated footage from portable cameras, the world was rocked by The Blair Witch Project. Obviously fictional, yet eerily realistic, the film haunted many viewers for years and had a huge impact on the genre, popularizing found footage films.
However, 25 years later, with a plethora of films attempting to replicate the success of The Blair Witch Project, and even more films using CGI and highly realistic makeup to create deeper stories, the question arises as to whether the film is still relevant.
Is The Blair Witch Project Real?
Written, directed and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the fictional story of several filmmaking students taking a trip to the woods to get to the bottom of the Blair Witch story, has become an instant success upon its release. There are many things that played into the horror’s success,...

In the last 5-10 years, the found footage format has shifted more from feature-length horror films to short analog horror projects and alternate reality games on TikTok and Twitter. The analog horror emphasizes the nostalgic yet uncanny feeling conveyed by the technology of decades past.
The Ar games, on the other hand, use modern smartphones to convey a Pov atmosphere no worse than the student filmmakers of The Blair Witch Project could do with professional and amateur cameras.
And yet, no movie makes you feel for the characters like a found-footage movie. And when you add to the formula a skillful and clever approach to production and cinematography, as well as no less intriguing elements of supernatural and folk horror to the story, the result can be one of the scariest and most uncomfortable movies you've ever seen.

Scooby Doo and the Mystery Inc gang are heading back to the small screen in a live action series for Netflix, here are the details.
Jinkies: Netflix has ordered a live action Scooby Doo television series. No casting details have been confirmed, but we do know (thanks to a Deadline report) that it will be written by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg – the same Scott Rosenberg who penned Con Air, one of the greatest action films of the 1990s.
This isn’t, of course, the first time Hanna Barbera’s cartoon has been reworked in live-action. Long before James Gunn took creative control of the DC Extended Universe, he was a prolific screenwriter, and arguably his most successful films, at the box office at least, were 2002’s Scooby Doo and 2004’s Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.
The films brought the classic cartoon to life with a pitch perfect cast – Matthew Lillard...

Stephen King is the undisputed King of Horror, and his chilling narratives extend far beyond literature, regularly receiving film and television adaptations, some of which he personally works on.
But no matter how brilliant a writer Mr. King is, it's hard to deny that every artist is inspired by the works of others. That's why King, being a massive cinephile, often talks openly about the movies in the thriller or horror genre that have been influential to him.
The movie we're talking about today, however, didn't just influence the writer, it downright freaked him out, causing him to turn it off halfway through, because King was also high after the surgery. Quite a horrible experience if you ask us, though the movie in question was capable of scaring even a completely sober person.

"The Blair Witch Project" is back in the news. First, word recently broke that a new "Blair Witch" movie is in the works from Blumhouse and Lionsgate. This was greeted as less-than-ideal information by the folks involved with the original movie, who feel they should be involved with the new film, too, and who can blame them? Then came word that the original cast members of the first film were asking for residuals for the use of their likenesses throughout the franchise.
In short, things seem messy in "Blair Witch" world. Talk about scary! But let's look beyond these recent headlines and back at the franchise itself. As of now, there are three feature films. There are also a handful of excellent made-for-tv faux documentaries that served as tie-ins for the films, but we won't be touching on those here. Instead, we're going to focus on the three theatrical releases: "The Blair Witch Project,...

It was announced two weeks ago that Paramount is resurrecting the Scary Movie spoof franchise with a brand new reboot movie, which will likely arrive in theaters next year.
The new movie, a joint venture between Paramount and Miramax that will technically be the sixth installment in the franchise, is expected to go into production this coming Fall.
We don’t yet know who will be writing, directing or starring in the Scary Movie reboot, but two actors in particular have already expressed an interest in joining the franchise.
The first is Melissa Barrera, who can currently be seen in theaters in Radio Silence’s bloody horror movie Abigail. Barrera is of course also the star of Scream and Scream VI, which kind of makes her a perfect candidate to lampoon herself in a Scary Movie reboot.
