Young Odekerke is still adapting to his new surroundings. When Miete invites him over for dinner, village idiot Bertus begins bothering him as well, as he is convinced he will someday marry Miete.
Miete van der Schoor asks Odekerke to assist her family with money problems. His friend and colleague Lummens proposes to ask rich farmer Bonte to help out.
Bonte and Van der Schoor are going in business together. Odekerke is scolded by Mrs. Bongaerts for meddling in the affairs of other and causes a commotion when he spills the beans on the notary meeting the Baron's sister.
Engineer De Hertog arrives in town to start a mining business, providing a lot of the villagers with new work. Chaplain Odekerke offers De Hertog a place to stay despite the fact that he is a protestant.
Miete van der Schoor confesses her love for Johannes de Hertog, but refuses to allow him to become a catholic so they can marry. The Bongaerts family blames Chaplain Odekerke for their son becoming a criminal.
René Bongaerts confesses to Odekerke that he set fire to Bonte's farm. Miete van der Schoor admits that she has loved Odekerke from the moment they first met.
