- Poor Arlette is married off by her well meaning mother to a supposed count who turns out to be a fake and a crook.Arlette seeks out the real count, to whom in name technically she is married.
- Children lead newlyweds from a church as bells chime. Nearby a crowd watches skiers and men wearing winter scarves approach in a car. At the wedding party inside we meet the hostess (the bride's mother Madame Millois) and the father, and Lefol who introduces himself as a filmmaker. Arlette, the bride, doesn't seem to be spending much time with her new husband, a count, and is instead with her cousin Marc, the best man, who it turns out she really loves. A baron arrives late, he talks to her parents, he is a friend of the count, Robert. He brings flowers into the room where the bride is and catches her kissing the cousin which leads him to drop the flowers. But next the baron uncovers something even more disturbing. The man claiming to be Robert is an impostor and climbs through a window to run away. The baron informs the parents but it is explained that she is legally married to the real baron and if she wants to be divorced she needs to find the man. The scene changes to a movie theatre where the audience is laughing at a stilted silent film.A man disturbs patrons by having an extended conversation with a pretty girl he is sitting next to, he is the real Robert and she is Sylvine. She is married to Lefol the film director but the count invites her to an evening meal. They leave before the show is over, as the audience continues to hoot the film down. We are now at a beach where Robert is helped by his servant Gilbert to put on a robe.Inside his nearby place, Sylvine is still sleeping, she has spent the night with the count, he gets her up since it is now 11:30 and she puts on her robe. She sings Plaisir D'Amour as she prepares her bath and he plays the piano. A man arrives by taxi at the cinema, it is the filmmaker and he talks to the manager outside, who says the showing was a scandal but mentions that the count was in attendance. Back at the count's place, they are eating outside. The director and a cameraman carrying a tripod arrive but the count thinks it is the girl's husband so has Gilbert escort her away. The director tells the count about the film and then about the supposed marriage . The next visitor is the baron who tells him about the marriage as well. Then a third visitor comes,it is Arlette with her luggage, she installs herself in the place so the count, disturbed, brings his new girlfriend back, hoping that will get rid of Arlette, and seats Sylvine and the baron so Arlette can see them. Yet another visitor arrives, it is Marc on a motorcycle. The count sends off Sylvine in a car and kisses her. To prevent Arlette from leaving with Marc, he sends the cousin off and tells him to go see the film. The director is back at home with Sylvine who is dressing in front of mirrors. Meanwhile the count and Arlette are having drinks at separate small tables. He tells her she will be woken up early at 6:30 to the sound of bells and Gilbert sets her up in the room above for the night. She locks the door and props a chair in front to keep the count out. Downstairs he reads his paper by the fire while Gilbert compliments him on his new acquisition. But Robert plans to stay down there. Sylvine phones him, Lefol has left so she is now alone.Arlette doesn't go to sleep upstairs but plays a piano and sings, to annoy him. She then sneaks out down the stairs in the darkness and opens a window to jump out. Robert hears a car pull up, it is Sylvine who has come back to join him. Arlette is back inside and is insulted by what is going on so Sylvine leaves.Robert insists Arlette stay but she can sleep in a chair downstairs. He now plays the piano and she sings along. When she falls asleep, be puts some covers on her. Back at the cinema, Sylvine is watching the silly movie a second time and is now sitting with Marc who she flirts with. Back at the house, we hear a sound outside, it is the baron, with a liquor bottle, and the count gives him a handful more. In the next scene we see Sylvine and Marc exercising with a group by the beach.Robert and Arlette are nearby, and they see them. The mother Madame Millois is the latest to arrive at the house. It is decided that Arlette will stay married. The count invites the mother in and reappears dressed. Lefol is in the garden and sees his wife.Marc then drives off with her as the director helplessly watches.
