For a solid chunk of my childhood, my favorite movie was Disney's Sleeping Beauty. As film geeks are wont to do, I've spent a lot of time thinking about why I was so drawn to it in my formative years. Little Me was especially fond of two scenes: Princess Aurora’s guardian fairies using magic to settle an argument over whether a gown should be pink or blue, and the fabulously evil Maleficent's transformation into a fire-breathing dragon. I was equally entranced by the fashion as I was by the fearsome monster, and as an adult, that’s no surprise. I especially love freaky films with a solid visual aesthetic, and even more so when they feature fierce women.
For 1959, Sleeping Beauty is surprisingly feminist. The titular Beauty herself is pretty bland, but the climax of the film features three powerful fairies who cast off their guise of domestic...

Whether she has her hand at fashion, beauty or music, the certified Bad Gal is at the top of her game and raising the bar very high while doing so. Case in point: When the 31-year-old star debuted Fenty Beauty in September 2017, she shook the cosmetics industry to its core. After coming out with 40 foundation shades (which was shockingly unheard of at the time), brands scrambled to produce the same amount. And because Rihanna has a flair for setting trends, "The Fenty Effect" was born. Now, the beauty mogul is ready to shake things up again. This time, with the release of two products that are new to the Fenty Beauty line-up:...

Tyra Banks is the latest name to join the Quibi content push.
The actress and model will both star in and executive produce a new documentary series titled “Beauty,” a multi-part show which “celebrates being beautiful.” The aim of the series is to “break down barriers and challenge traditional notions” of beauty and question the societal standards that have defined us.
“As I look into the future, I see radical changes in both how people ‘attain beauty,’ and how the world perceives beauty,” Banks said in a statement. “Our docuseries aims to expand and redefine the definition of beauty as we know it, challenging why we accept certain beauty parameters and reject others, and examining the beliefs behind those judgments.”
Banks is best known for creating and hosting “America’s Next Top Model,” which has been running for 24 seasons across various networks. The show also has spinoffs in countries all around the world.

The 49th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is an epic celebration of experimental media that runs for six days on March 22-27. There’s so much great stuff screening this year, it makes one wonder what they’ll have left for their 50th anniversary next year!
A couple of the highlights include the highly anticipated feature-length documentary The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye by Marie Losier, which chronicles the pandrogynous love story between industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife. The film already made a big splash at the Berlinale earlier in the year and looks to be a major hit on the festival circuit this year.
Also not to be missed is a special retrospective of one of this year’s festival jury members, Vanessa Renwick, a longtime favorite on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film. Renwick will screen 10 of her quirky and artistic documentary portraits,...
