Vanna White celebrated the 40th anniversary of her Wheel of Fortune debut in December 2022, and now the syndicated version game show is hitting its 40th. But by the time the current, nighttime Wheel incarnation premiered — on September 19, 1983 — daytime versions of the show had been spinning for years. Read on for a chronology, Fortune fans. NBC introduced Wheel of Fortune as a daytime game show on January 6, 1975, with Chuck Woolery hosting and actor Susan Stafford turning the letters. Woolery, who’d go on to host the game shows Love Connection and Scrabble, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 that game-show mastermind Merv Griffin approached him to host a pilot called Shopper’s Bazaar, a proto-Wheel that also featured a roulette wheel and Hangman-like puzzles. NBC passed on that “horrible” pilot, Woolery explained, but when Griffin reconfigured the format and renamed it Wheel of Fortune, the network put in on the daytime schedule.

Mike Darnell has stepped down from his role as President of Unscripted Television at Warner Bros. after a decade at the studio, he announced in a statement Thursday.
“Letting yourself go is always difficult… I took a deep breath, called myself on Zoom and told myself it was time to leave,” he wrote. “I took it surprisingly well. Actually, Channing approached me a couple of months ago, and although I was given the opportunity to stay… it would have meant more changes for both my personal deal and to the general structure of the division.
Darnell added that “a couple of new ventures have come my way” during the discussions, but “even so, deciding to leave was difficult.”

Andy Cohen has revealed that he would jump at the chance to take over from Pat Sajak as the host of Wheel of Fortune. ‘Dream, dream job. I would love to,” the Watch What Happens Live host told Us Weekly. “That would be incredible.” The Real Housewives executive producer is already one of the busiest people in television, including his must-see TV double act with Anderson Cooper on CNN each New Year’s Eve. Cohen’s other hosting credits include For Real: The Story of Reality TV, Ex-Rated with Andy Cohen, and the Love Connection reboot. He even had a stint co-hosting Live with Kelly Ripa. “Not only is a game show the thing that I haven’t done yet, but that is the premiere game show. It’s really fun,” Cohen said of Wheel. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany was asked Monday to explain why President Donald Trump retweeted former game show host Chuck Woolery’s claim that “everyone is lying” about the coronavirus, including the Centers for Disease Control, as a way to keep the economy coming back before the election.
A reporter asked McEnany, “The president retweeted something this morning … saying that the CDC is lying about the coronavirus in order to hurt his chances of getting re-elected. Does the president believe that the CDC is lying about Covid-19?”
McEnany tried to explain what the intent of Trump’s retweet was — blaming his displeasure on CDC leaks and “some rogue individuals.”
“The president, with his intent in that retweet, expresses displeasure with the CDC, some rogue individuals leaking guidelines prematurely,” she said. “You had a 63-page plan that was leaked prematurely. He believes that that misleads the American public when there...

It’s official. Fox has canceled its Love Connection reboot after two seasons, Deadline has confirmed.
Host Andy Cohen announced the cancellation Wednesday morning during an interview on Howard Stern’s satellite radio show.
The cancellation of the dating show revival is not a surprise. The series was not a strong ratings performer. It averaged a 0.5 rating and 1.6 million viewers in Live+Same Day viewing in its second season.
While the series is not returning, we hear Fox would love to work with Cohen again and is looking forward to the next project with him.
The Love Connection revival sent hopeful singles on three dates in order to ditch the apps and find true love. Each hour of the show featured single men and/or women in search of romance. They told Cohen exactly what they were looking for in a partner and why they’d found it so hard to meet Mr.

Fox has dumped Love Connection, cancelling the Andy Cohen-hosted reboot after two seasons, a network rep confirms to TVLine.
The new Love Connection failed to win over audiences, drawing low ratings throughout its two-season run; the Season 2 finale last September drew an anemic 1.82 million viewers and a 0.5 demo rating.
“They cancelled it,” Cohen lamented Wednesday morning on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show.
Love Connection tinkered with its polarizing format in Season 2, eliminating Season 1’s icky “love-or-money decisions” gimmick in favor of “more happy endings” for contestants. (TVLine’s initial review of Love Connection took issue with the smarmy twist.

Being a loving connoisseur of ’80s cheese, my heart leapt at the news that Fox was rebooting the old-school dating show Love Connection. But alas, some things are better left in the past. The new reboot — debuting this Thursday at 9/8c — turns out to be the TV equivalent of a hot-pink leotard stuffed full of floppy disks.
The original Love Connection, hosted by Chuck Woolery, is a charming relic of the video-dating era, with singles choosing a date from three options and reporting back to Woolery how it went. It’s corny and hopelessly dated… but that’s part of the fun.

If you just plunked the name “Chuck Wepner” down in front of me and asked me to say what it made me think of I’d say that “Chuck Wepner” sounds like an anagram of vintage TV Personalities – Chuck Woolery from The Love Connection meets Judge Wapner of The People’s Court. And while that might not be the truth so help me god there is a bit of Werner Herzog’s “ecstatic truth” to it – Chuck Wepner is one Vintage Personality...

Tired of being single? Well, maybe Andy Cohen can help you find love — in front of a live studio audience.
Fox is bringing back the classic dating show Love Connection this summer, and we get our first good look at the reboot (premiering Thursday, May 25) in the just-released preview above. We’re clearly a long way away from the ’80s Chuck Woolery-hosted original; the new Love Connection is filmed on a futuristic Who Wants to Be a Millionaire-esque set, with new host Cohen matching up singles using a giant video screen. (No chintzy “click-click-click” sound effects here!)

The original Love Connection might have been, for better or worse, ahead of its time. When that Chuck Woolery-hosted show debuted in 1983, “reality television” as we knew it was defined by Real People and That’s Incredible! rather than, say, The Bachelor or Big Brother. Flash-forward to the Trump era, and Fox has revived the old date-and-tell format with a host who can’t possibly be shocked by anything today’s contestants might say: Real Housewives producer and Bravo host…...

Jim Parsons wasn't nearly as excited as his agent when he first landed his audition for the role of Sheldon Cooper on “The Big Bang Theory.” On “Late Show,” Parsons talked about how his agent called him with the news that this show was the new Chuck Lorre pilot. “I did not know Chuck Lorre at the time,” Parsons admitted to David Letterman. “I thought he was talking about Chuck Woolery.” Also read: Chuck Lorre Achieves Rare Showrunner Feat: 4 Shows Rated in the Top 20 Letterman pointed out that Woolery is perhaps best known as the host of “Love Connection,” to which.

Chuck Woolery, iconic former host of game shows like Scrabble and The Love Connection, is also a conservative activist and pundit, but he's got a new gig that has him enjoying a golden shower of big government cash. While Chuck is no fan of government spending, he makes an explicit pitch for some sweet, sweet teat-milk in a new ad for Medical Direct Club's Virtually Pain Free Catheters.

It looks like Chuck Woolery, who seemingly has ditched hosting game shows in favor of conservative political activism, has picked a fight with Michael Moore – or, as he puts it, “America’s biggest hypocrite.” Woolery, best known as the original host of Wheel of Fortune from 1975-1981 and Love Connection from 1983-1994, for about a year has been creating videos at SaveUsChuckWoolery.com that skewer liberal policies. In those videos, he sometimes takes good-natured jabs at Hollywood, like when he lamented how rough Matt Damon has it “living with the guilt of having too much money.

I will be the first to admit that I did not see the sudden resurgence of Love Connection host Chuck Woolery coming. No, the host was a beloved apolitical memory for most of these years, and the Chuck Norris-esque conservative return caught me by surprise. Yet his appearance at Cpac has sparked something of a resurgence as the former host launches a campaign to install term limits in Congress-- a campaign that has endorsed the most conservative candidate in the race, "all of them."...

8. Chuck Woolery ("Wheel of Fortune," "Love Connection," "Scrabble"): Chuck Woolery was the original host of "Wheel of Fortune," but lost the gig to the smarmy wet blanket, Pat Sajack, after a salary dispute. Almost all of Woolery's episodes have been permanently lost, as NBC had a habit of wiping tapes to save money.

Snoop Dogg and Warren G rose to notoriety nearly 20 years ago by rapping the kinds of lyrics and producing the kinds of songs that make Tipper Gore very upset. Today, their tracks still require Parental Advisory labels, but in addition to aurally corrupting America’s youth, two of rap and hip-hop’s biggest names are doing it commercially. MetroPCS tapped Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. and the original Regulator for an original web series dubbed The G-Connection. It starts off with Ted Williams channeling Rod Roddy and introducing our host Warren G, who’s channeling Chuck Woolry. Warren then introduces Snoop Dogg, who plays a trio of characters looking to win the affection of model Brittany Dailey on a game show that’s almost an exact replica of Love Connection. The show is off to a very good start. It’s a send-up that takes itself seriously, complete with the soft-focus...

As The Big Bang Theory's socially inept brainiac Sheldon Cooper, Jim Parsons is often called upon to spit out tongue-twisting mouthfuls of intricately crafted, physics-laced dialogue. That he does so and still manages to imbue it with meaning — and Sheldon's prickly, persnickety intentions — is nothing short of a science-defying miracle. "There's no way I'm going to ever be able to grasp most of these concepts," says Parsons, chuckling. "But the good thing is I don't really need the full concept, I just need the basics, so I can understand what point he's trying to make by bringing it up. Once I get just deep enough to connect, I go, 'I see.' Then I'm done." Parsons' hilariously meticulous characterization helped make The Big Bang Theory a hit for CBS last season and has earned him many a glowing review. The show, which focuses on the exploits of Sheldon and...

Sternberg hooks GoFish dating show
Internet video network GoFish is launching its own version of a reality dating show on Thursday.
Dubbed "Seduce A Celeb", the 14-week online dating series featuring Lindsey Knickerbocker and Ashley Zarlin from the Bravo series' The Real Housewives of Orange County interacting with contestants through online videos in separate 7-week installments.
Scott Sternberg (The Academy) is executive producer of Seduce, his first online venture. The series is hosted by Andrew Firestone of ABC's The Bachelor, will begin with online users narrowing down the field of contestants.
From there, Knickerbocker and Zarlin will ultimately determine which chosen suitor will be granted a date with each of them by analyzing video responses to their posed questions.
"Empowering audiences to create and interact on such an intimate level with one another and with celebrities is a concept that reinvents the dating show format," Sternberg said. "It's incredible what technological innovations are doing to traditional media concepts, and I'm thrilled to be working with GoFish on this next-generation entertainment."
While Sternberg's credits include game shows Hollywood Squares and Love Connection, he is currently producing Hey Paula with Paula Abdul for Bravo.

Woolery game for reality series
NEW YORK -- Step aside, Ozzy Osbourne: Game show icon Chuck Woolery will be the subject of his own new primetime reality series. Slated to premiere on Game Show Network in the spring, Chuck Woolery: Behind the Lingo will explore the life of the TV veteran, whose credits include Love Connection and Lingo, the word-puzzle game he currently hosts for the cable net. Six episodes have been ordered, but the network has an option for an undisclosed number of additional episodes. Anyone expecting cable to deliver another controversial reality series will be disappointed, GSN president and Rich Cronin said. "It's more family-friendly than MTV's 'The Osbournes' or '(The) Anna Nicole (Show)' on E!" he said. "Chuck is quirky, not dysfunctional."...
