Colin Farrell’s journey from a young and ambitious actor to a respected star in Hollywood is a tale filled with transformation, determination, and a touch of self-deprecating humor! The actor is known for his intense roles and charm, but his career has seen its share of ups and downs, which is only expected when you work in the show business.

Colin Farrell is a versatile Irish actor who has excelled in a variety of genres, from action films to dramas and from wild comedies to very very dark comedies.
Farrell has had the good fortune to work with many of the best directors out there, including Terence Malick and Steven Spielberg. Two writers/directors in particular have been instrumental in pushing Farrell to new artistic ground. Martin McDonagh directed Farrell to his first Golden Globe win (Best Actor for “In Bruges”), and Yorgos Lanthimos led Farrell to his second Best Actor Globe nomination, this time for “The Lobster.”
And most recently, he has received acclaim for “The Banshees of Inisherin” with his first Oscar nomination and become a DC villain in “The Batman.”

There are a ton of prolific actors in the film industry, but only a handful of actors can rival the stardom of Matt Damon. The actor has worked in a number of films, which have left the audience mesmerized, and have led to a huge fan following all over the world. Damon has worked in films such as Good Will Hunting, Air, The Martian, Ocean’s Eleven, and many more, where he has proved his acting range.

Needless to say, working in films of various genres earned him the golden opportunity to work with names such as Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Robin Williams, and many more. However, he was quite close to working with Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, until scheduling disagreements forced the filmmaker to find his replacement.

Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.
After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.
He plays Oz Cobblepot in the Max series "Penguin," spinning out of his supporting role in 2022's "The Batman." Before he returns onscreen as the Penguin, though, he's going to star in (and executive produce) "Sugar" for competing streaming service Apple TV+.

The American Film Institute has its sights set on Matthew Libatique.
The Oscar nominated cinematographer, who graduated from the institution in 1992, has been tapped to receive AFI’s Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal. It will be presented during the AFI Life Achievement Award tribute to Nicole Kidman at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 27.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

What makes a sex scene sexy? More to the point, what makes a sex scene good? That’s become an especially thorny question in recent years, with detailed accounts of what goes on behind the scenes of movies we love complicating our relationship with their most memorable moments. And though we’re ever so slowly moving away from the male gaze serving as the default perspective on love, sex, and everything between, there’s still a long way to go.
That is, if sex scenes still appear in movies at all. They do, but with greater infrequency, certainly in Hollywood studio productions. Though many think-pieces have been written about “the death of the sex scene” there’s still been a lot to celebrate over the last 23 years. A number of sex-positive, LGBTQ-friendly, and otherwise forward-thinking filmmakers have directed scenes that are as steamy as they are moving. There’s nothing...

With awards season in full swing, it remains to be seen which of Hollywood’s biggest actors will go home with Academy Awards in 2023. The Banshees of Inisherin star Colin Farrell is a top contender for Best Actor, but he has faced a challenging battle to get to this point. In fact, Farrell recently pointed out how well pop star Justin Bieber handled fame by comparison.
Colin Farrell was a breakout star of the early 2000s Colin Farrell attends The National Board of Review 2023 Awards Gala I Theo Wargo/Getty Images
Farrell first gained widespread attention in the early 2000s. The actor gained indie cred for his performance in director Joel Schumacher’s 2000 war film Tigerland. And soon thereafter, he landed major roles in movies like Minority Report, Phone Booth, Daredevil, The Recruit, and S.W.A.T. But following the disastrous release of director Oliver Stone’s 2004 period epic Alexander, Farrell thought his career was over.

On paper, "Alexander" looked like a surefire hit. Colin Farrell, who starred as the titular world-conqueror in the 2004 film, certainly thought so. And who could blame him? Helmed by an acclaimed director in Oliver Stone and featuring a stacked cast that included Sir Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie, Rosario Dawson, Val Kilmer, Jared Leto, and Christopher Plummer, it seemed like the perfect vehicle to catapult the young Irish actor to superstardom. The film also featured a very robust budget of 155 million, and every bit was needed to capture the scale and scope of Alexander the Great's life.
And then, the terrible reviews started to come in. The box office receipts didn't. Stone's epic biopic managed a measly 34 million domestic, and barely scraped past its budget worldwide with 167 million, all told. A mere four years after his breakout role in "Tigerland," Farrell started to question his own talent and the future...

Colin Farrell has the Brad Pitt curse; he has the talent of a character actor but he's too hot to be anything but a leading man. As such, Hollywood didn't quite know what to do with him during his breakout in the 2000s.
I'd point to two directors who best understand how to use Farrell. First, there's the man who discovered him: Joel Schumacher. In their second collaboration, "Phone Booth," Farrell played Stu Shepard, a sleazy PR operative who has to confront his sins. Some early proof he was more than just a pretty boy.
Then there's Martin McDonagh, director of "In Bruges" which is, for my money, still Farrell's best movie. When I watched Farrell play Ray, a fledgling hitman hiding out in Belgium after a job gone wrong, I realized what a great, and hilarious, actor he can be. The resulting story is the funniest movie ever made...

Since beginning his career in the late 1990s, Irish actor Colin Farrell has been on a proverbial rollercoaster. Following a handful of early film and TV appearances, Farrell first gained the attention of Hollywood when he starred in Joel Schumacher’s 2000 war drama Tigerland. And his breakout role came in 2002 when he played Agent Danny Witwer in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report. His excellent work, good looks, and onscreen charisma quickly positioned Farrell as a potentially huge leading man. But a string of moderate successes, outright failures, and mixed critical responses with films like Phone Booth, Daredevil, S.W.A.T., Miami Vice, and the universally derided Alexander cooled the actor’s jets for a while, while Farrell also rode out some personal relationship drama and a trip to rehab.

Joel Schumacher was an immensely talented filmmaker whose slick visual style earned him loads of high-profile assignments during the 1980s and '90s. He could deliver the sensuous perfume commercial aesthetic of A-listers like Alan Parker, Ridley Scott, and Adrian Lyne sans the auteurist demand for total creative control. He possessed the crowd-pleasing instincts of Tony Scott. He worked with the biggest movie stars of the day: Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas, Jim Carrey, Matthew McConaughey, and Mr. T. He discovered Colin Farrell with 2000's "Tigerland." He both saved and killed the "Batman" franchise.
That Schumacher had any kind of career is something of a miracle. He survived a wild youth that included a near-fatal meth addiction, and by his own admission, thousands of sexual partners as the 1980s AIDS epidemic took hold. This experience gave him valuable insight as he landed major studio assignments packed with volatile young talent. On "St. Elmo's Fire,...

When Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson played hit men in the 2008 black comedy “In Bruges,” it was an inspired pairing, letting both actors shine in ways they hadn’t before. Farrell’s good looks had won him the lead in “Tigerland” over 20 years ago, but directors shied away from exploring his talents as a character actor. Gleeson had won an Emmy for playing Winston Churchill in an HBO movie, “Into the Storm,” and was nominated as Best Actor by the New York Film Critics Circle in 1998 for playing Irish folk hero Martin Cahill in “The General,” but the big buzzy movie part eluded him. Together “In Bruges,” they were hilarious and the Hollywood Foreign Press nominated both Farrell and Gleeson for Golden Globe awards in 2009; Farrell won as Best Actor in a Comedy.

“If we got rid of every gay man in the military, there would be no military,” a sympathetic officer tells Marine recruit Ellis French in “The Inspection.” That’s an exceptionally open-minded take on the United States’ “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, seeing as how pretty much everyone else French encounters at boot camp is openly hostile to there being a gay man among them. But writer-director Elegance Bratton made it through the system — like the character, he’d been lost and homeless for a decade before enlisting — and this deeply personal narrative debut is one gay Black man’s way of showing how he not only survived the experience, but was strengthened by it. “The few, the proud,” as they say.

When Wolfgang Petersen burst onto the scene with his WWII submarine masterpiece "Das Boot," Hollywood came calling. Any director who could pin audiences to their seats for two-and-a-half hours with a film that rarely leaves the interior of a U-boat surely had the skills to enthrall viewers with a mainstream blockbuster. While Petersen proved more than reliable with smashes like "In the Line of Fire," "Outbreak," "Air Force One," and "The Perfect Storm," he occasionally found himself attached to ambitious projects that, for one reason or another, failed to launch or launched without him at the helm.
Petersen, who died on August 12, 2022, at the age of 81, left behind a litany of what-ifs. He was in the mix on several tantalizing projects that could've changed the complexion of superhero and YA filmmaking; there's an alternate universe in which Petersen revived the DC universe with a Batman and Superman mash-up in the early 2000s.

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy will reprise their roles as the delightfully wicked Sanderson Sisters in the live-action comedy “Hocus Pocus 2,” the spooky sequel to Disney’s 1993 Halloween cult classic “Hocus Pocus.” The film will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2022.
Singer/actress Bette Midler returns as Winifred Sanderson, with Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex and the City”) and Kathy Najimy (“Sister Act”) back as her sisters, Sarah and Mary, respectively.
In “Hocus Pocus 2,” three young women accidentally bring the Sanderson Sisters back to modern day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on the world.

When most people hear the name Joel Schumacher, their mind instantly turns to the near-irreparable damage he did to the Batman franchise, taking the Gothic aesthetic established by Tim Burton and turning it into a neon and nipples extravaganza designed to sell as many toys as possible and banishing the Dark Knight to cinematic purgatory for close to a decade.
However, The Lost Boys director’s legacy stretches much further and wider than simply making two Batman movies, and his filmography is about as diverse and varied as you’d expect from anyone that spent over 40 years in the business. Two of his first credits were for writing Car Wash and Michael Jackson musical The Wiz, both of which went on to become firm cult classics.

After battling cancer for a year, Joel Schumacher passed away this week at the age of 80, and some of the more famous people he helped in his long career have been remembering the different ways his work, friendship and support affected them.
Schumacher directed a number of memorable films over the decades, including St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys, Flatliners, Falling Down, Tigerland and A Time to Kill. In a statement, Matthew McConaughey has opened up about his breakout role in that 1996 John Grisham adaptation, crediting Schumacher with altering his professional trajectory against the odds.
“Joel not only took a chance on me, he fought for me,” McConaughey told Variety. “Knowing the studio might never approve a relatively unknown like myself for the lead in A Time to Kill, he set up a secret screen test for me on a Sunday morning in a small unknown studio because as he stated,...

Joel Schumacher and the star he made, Colin FarrellI once walked across the street in the East Village with Joel Schumacher. I didn't say anything though I immediately recognized him; as directors go he was hard to miss -- very tall with long silver hair. Anything I might have wanted to say would surely have been too belabored in a street crossing. "I love your work," is rote and in this case untrue though I loved some of his work enthusiastically in a formative (St Elmo's Fire) or camp (Batman & Robin) or moment-in-time.
Sometimes I loved his work in all of those ways at once -- Love you, Lost Boys!
It's been curious to see so much appreciation spring up on the internet today, particularly because Schumacher was never a director to inspire reverence in the masses though he made several popular pictures...

Joel Schumacher, the outspoken and shameless American filmmaker whose often flamboyant productions have become cult classics, died Monday morning at the age of 80. He passed away peacefully after a year-long battle with cancer, Schumacher’s representatives confirmed to IndieWire. His last efforts behind the camera were directing two episodes of the Netflix series “House of Cards” in 2013, though he’d since continued to regale with his unfiltered stories of Hollywood lore, most recently in a 2019 profile of the filmmaker in New York Magazine.
Born in New York City, Schumacher studied at Parsons New School for Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology — an education that informed his dazzling visual style as a filmmaker — before moving to Los Angeles to study at UCLA. His earliest credits in Hollywood included as costume designer on “Play It as It Lays” and Woody Allen’s “Sleeper” and “Interiors,” and as screenwriter of cult favorites “Sparkle,...

Joel Schumacher, costume designer-turned-director of films including “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “The Lost Boys” and “Falling Down,” as well as two “Batman” films, died in New York City on Monday morning after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 80.
Schumacher brought his fashion background to directing a run of stylish films throughout the 1980s and 1990s that were not always critically acclaimed, but continue to be well-loved by audiences for capturing the feel of the era.
Schumacher was handed the reins of the “Batman” franchise when Tim Burton exited Warner Bros.’ Caped Crusader series after two enormously successful films. The first movie by Schumacher, “Batman Forever,” starring Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey and Nicole Kidman, grossed more than $300 million worldwide.

Colin Farrell is a fascinating actor. Early on in his career, he got good notices for his work in Joel Schumacher's Tigerland, but his following movies did little to build on that promise and make him a respected up and coming star. Instead, he became a mainstay of action movies of the early aughts, gaining popularity but not being much respected as an actor. On paper, 2004's Alexander looked like his big Oscar bid, but the Oliver Stone historical epic crashed and burned most spectacularly. Still, Farrell has always shown a keen eye when it comes to working with prestigious directors. He's collaborated with Stone, Terrence Malick, Woody Allen, Peter Weir, Liv Ullmann, Sofia Coppola, Steve McQueen, and Yorgos Lanthimos, among others. His work with Lanthimos has been particularly revelatory.

Earlier this year, the most surprising nominee in the Oscar race for Best International Feature Film was “Corpus Christi,” about an ex-convict who shows up at a small-town church in Poland claiming to be the preacher they’ve been waiting for. Three months later, “The Quarry” puts an American indie spin on the same kind of story, with its lead character a criminal on the run who shows up at a small-town Texas church claiming to be the preacher they’ve been waiting for.
In both films, the new “preacher” comes in with a plainspoken style so dramatically different from what the congregants are accustomed to seeing that he becomes a big hit – and in both films, the deception changes the deceiver as much as the deceived, until his past catches up to him.
Apart from these few plot similarities, though, “Corpus Christi” and “The Quarry” are miles apart. In Jan Komasa’s Polish film,...

Two historic dramas headline a comparatively slow weekend for new Specialty roll outs vs. last weekend’s heavy roster. Bleecker Street/ShivHans Pictures’ Hotel Mumbai with Oscar-nominee Dev Patel and Golden Globe-nominee Armie Hammer will have a minimal start in New York and Los Angeles ahead of a fairly wide release in the coming weeks. ‘Tigerland’ Review: Harrowing and Essential Doc Follows Tigers and Those Fighting For Their Survival
You’ll have to wait a while before “Tigerland” introduces its eponymous stars, but like many elements of Ross Kauffman’s emotional, often harrowing new documentary, the eventual reveal will be worth it. Aaron Paul is an Idaho boy at heart. The three-time Emmy winning star of “Breaking Bad” and producer and actor on Nickelodeon’s bawdy, subversive animated series “Bojack Horseman” currently makes his home in Los Angeles, but Paul was born in Emmett, a sleepy city about 30 miles outside of Boise, and escapes to the spud state to unwind and visit with family every chance he gets.
“I’ve lived in California for most of my life,” Paul told a packed crowd gathered at the Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum, Idaho on March 15. “I love California. But Hollywood can be crazy. Coming back to Idaho is like a sanctuary for me.”
Paul’s Coffee Talk was one several standout events at the eighth annual Sun Valley Film Festival, which ran March 13-17 in the snowy playground for skiers and snowboarding aficionados. Paul, whom Variety honored at the fest with the Svff 2019 Pioneer Award,...
