Scratch the surface of any festival and you’re bound to turn up a barrage of tiny gems, films that got overlooked from the glitzier packages hogging the red carpet. And this year at the Sundance Film Festival, horror hounds likely heard the buzz surround the Aussie flick “Killing Ground.” Whether they did or not, it’s now on the way, and you won’t want to miss it.
Starring Harriet Dyer, Aaron Glenane, Aaron Pederson, and Ian Meadows, and directed by Damien Power, the premise is familiar: a couple goes camping in the woods, only to encounter some very nasty business.

Director Patricio GuzmánFrom the observational cinema of Battle of Chile to the poetic montage of his latest films, Patricio Guzmán has had a very unique journey through the language of documentary filmmaking. However, it is with The Pearl Button that the Chilean master documentary filmmaker achieves a climactic point. While the art of storytelling in his last feature Nostalgia for the Light and its breathtaking juxtaposition of narratives won Guzmán international praise, The Pearl Button takes one step further and allows for a pure poetic force to link its stories, a noble experience which transcends the traditional borders between fiction and documentary cinema. The Pearl Button won Guzmán the 65th Berlinale Silver Bear for best screenplay even while in competition with great fictional films. For more about the film, read Daniel Kasman's coverage of it from Berlin. While focusing on The Pearl Button, the following conversation, with which I was assisted by Bahman Tavoosi,...

In a film that works both on a physical and emotional level, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan returns as a working mother, working to balance career with domestic responsibilities. When hotshot lawyer Anuradha Varma’s only daughter is kidnapped during school sports day. Anuradha is stricken with guilt for not spending more time with her child. It’s a prevalent dilemma for working women, and Sanjay Gupta who has so far focused attention on sexy item bombs and sexier guns opens up a debate on the travails of the working woman with flair and gusto, never allowing the thrills to override the somber underbelly of the plot.
Gupta brings flamboyance flourish and a restless energy to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s agile yet feminine role of a mother desperately seeking her daughter. In some ways I was reminded of Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly where a daughter is kidnapped. Kashyap’s film was much darker and ominous.

Following on from the several second teaser yesterday, Netflix has released the full-length teaser trailer for Marvel's first series on the Svod platform - "Daredevil". This appears to be a much darker and more grounded take on Matt Murdock's story than the 2003 film. Netflix has also confirmed that the series will be made available for streaming in 4K resolution.
The show's star Charlie Cox also recently spoke about his character's powers as they will be shown on the series. Matt Murdock's 'sonar sense' may be quite different to what you expect. He tells the Scratch the Surface podcast:
"We had to adapt certain things for the purpose of story telling. Like for example, and I'm making this up so there are no spoilers here, there is a scene where I come into the room, and lets say there are guns all over the floor on one side of...

The Scratch the Surface podcast sat down for a chat with Charlie Cox (The Theory of Everything, Boardwalk Empire) today, and quizzed him a little about playing the titular blind superhero in Marvel and Netflix's upcoming Daredevil show. The actor gives his thoughts on Fox's 2003 movie with Ben Affleck ("I thought it was fun at times, I just don't think to make that movie in that tone suits daredevil, it doesn’t really work for that character and that world"), talks about the comics he read in preparation for the role and more -- but perhaps most interestingly, he reveals how the character's sonar-like superpowers will be depicted on-screen. Cox concocts a scenario to better explain things, and from his account, it seems we won't be getting anything like the blue-tinged "sound vision" shots from the Daredevil film. "We had to adapt certain things for the purpose of story telling.

The clamor of celebration around the WWE Network is arguably well deserved. The WWE has done a stellar job of presenting this change of business model as a major industry innovation, the Las Vegas glitz of the announcement has really got it over as a big deal.
Scratch the surface of the Network though and is this really going to be best for business? Cheap pay per views and unlimited on-demand content is a mouth watering prospect, but what is going to be the real impact of the WWE Network? New tech is fantastic, everyone loves the simplification of life through cutting edge technology. The thing is, it rarely transpires that way, new tech usually means new problems.

Review of Spring Breakers: Disney Channel stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens show their edgy side. The High Art filmmaking of Harmony Korine crashes into the spring break comedy genre with Spring Breakers, the most unique girls-in-bikinis movie you’ll see this year or any year. Scratch the surface and Spring Breakers unfolds like an ordinary frat boy farce with plenty of college stereotypes involving binge drinking, T&A humor and youthful misbehavior. It’s what lies beneath this Girls-Gone-Wild tale that qualifies the film as a true Harmony Korine movie. True to Korine’s reputation as a cinematic iconoclast, Spring Breakers claims a striking visual beauty, an edgy intensity and a freakish, gold-teeth-flashing performance by James Franco as a low-level criminal.

Fitting in with the in crowd. That's just as important a part of school as achieving high grades. Some find this easier than others. If you're blessed with good looks, razor sharp cheekbones and buckets of charisma, bordering on arrogance, you've bypassed the queue and entered the inner sanctum of cool. If you're not so lucky, you have to work just that little bit harder. Finding a hidden talent can help - if you're in a band or croon a bit in the bathroom, this will come in useful. Sporty? Again, a useful cool card to be played. And judging by the latest Buffy episode, Witch, shaking balls of shredded paper while chanting at the top of your voice provides the girls with a pass into the trendy clique.
