Quite brilliant

Warning: Spoilers
This was a quite superb spy drama set in the cold war which relied on tension and intrigue and not silly James Bond style gadgets. A disgraced ex-army captain accepts a contract from MI6 to persuade a scientist and his daughter to cross to the West to meet up with their son who has defected but who they think was drowned. Despite being betrayed by the West Germans Johnny Donaghue has to improvise a plan to try and get them out. This is a superbly acted drama which was aired in the eighties. Though obviously dated now it is well worth watching. There is a VHS edition around which can probably be bought on ebay. This is one of those dramas that really deserves a repeat airing.

Excellent TV movie highlighting spy movements across inner German Border

This was a marvellous 3 part TV movie (3 hours total) about an attempt to bring a Russian missile manufacturer to defect to the west. The plan goes horribly wrong and the spy sent to persuade him over has to take the old man and his daughter across country and through the east German border fence. I've never seen this on video or DVD and sadly it was only aired once back in the mid eighties. Would be worth checking out or a TV re-run if only to highlight what a dangerous thing it was to try and escape from east to west.
