Nice snow job
The story of Oscar Goodman is complicated, as he is a complicated man. The last review is glowing of him, probably because the Netherlands is far enough away from Vegas you can't see the greed & lies from the sparkle & shine. Goodman probably wouldn't seem so cool to non-Las Vegans if he was mayor of where they lived- who would really feel comfortable with a man who has defended murderers and still brags about it to this day (he adores talking about being in Scorsese's "Casino") running their city? Goodman is a lot like the Strip- he puts on a good show, a lot of surface pleasantries with no substance. He smiles and makes jokes but that's about it. He does very little to help the fastest growing city in the US, and because of it Vegas is is too expensive to live in comfortably for most and the crime rate is out of control. You can get alcohol *anywhere* for almost *nothing*, but forget about reasonable health care or insurance.
This "portrait" is a joke that was made just in time for Goodman's campaign, and it worked. Since people move in and out of Clark County so rapidly and the bulk of people in South Las Vegas are tourists who only care about a good time, he gets away with a lot and many bad things remain unchecked. I have no specific political leanings, I just don't like to see guys like this get away with hurting a lot of people- especially when they use film to do it. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but remember that several thousand Americans move here monthly- and that's a whole lot of Vegas to try to silence and bury.
