Alligator Written by Hilary Bettis Directed by Elena Araoz Presented by New Georges and The Sol Project at A.R.T./New York Theatres, NYC November 27-December 18, 2016
In a note in the program for Alligator, the world-premiere play opening New Georges' 25th season, Hilary Bettis describes writing it in "a fever dream of alcohol, death, violence, and poverty." Alligator, the first of a planned series of collaborations by The Sol Project with off-Broadway companies to produce new plays by Latinx playwrights, carries the audience into a similar space, embracing chaos in order to map the "pain and destruction," as Bettis's note puts it, caused by the unplanned, unpredictable intersections of people's lives. Against the backdrop of the Florida Everglades in 1999, Alligator's characters struggle, compellingly if often unsuccessfully, within and against this chaos for self-realization and human connection.
At the heart of Alligator are Ty (Dakota Granados) and his twin sister...

Well this is something - an indie film about making an indie film. Shooting Clerks is a fictional feature biopic made by Christopher Downie retelling the story of Kevin Smith making his breakout debut film Clerks in 1994. The film stars Mark Frost as Kevin Smith, Chris Bain as Jason Mewes (who has appeared in other films made by Downie about Mewes), Kit Alexander as Brian O'Halloran, and Tom Sullivan as Jeff Anderson. The cast list also includes a cameo by the real Kevin Smith as Larkin Eve. As expected, this is super low budget and almost like a fan-made retelling of the original story, but it also has enough support to get a release. They'll be showing the film on a small screening tour including a showing in NYC, heading to a few other places like Orlando and New Jersey. Give this a look below if you're curious how it turned out.

The cast of “Empire” has dropped a single just a week shy of its Season 3 premiere. The single, titled “Need Freedom” is performed by the show’s cast, featuring Jussie Smollett. And while the song was intended for character Freda Gatz, a rapper who’s currently in jail, it instead focuses on recent shootings in the U.S. “I recorded this exactly seven days after Philando Castile was shot,” Smollett told Billboard. “Between the shootings of Castile, Alton Sterling, at the Pulse in Orlando and the police officers in Dallas — not to mention the other numerous killings over the last couple of years — it.

Coming off one of the best films of last year, Tangerine, director Sean Baker is going from iPhone to 35mm for his next feature, The Florida Project. We spoke with him about the drama and now it’s recently gone into production, with Willem Dafoe spotted on set. Currently shooting in Orlando, it follows a six-year-old and her group of friends during summer break as they adventure and soar on youth while their parents handle real-life problems. Although there are no details on his role, one could assume Dafoe will play one of these parents. [Page Six]

A good friend and writing partner is tired of me talking about Star Trek. She was never a Trek watcher but since it is the 50th Anniversary, she has decided to give it a try. Persistence really does pay off! Since she was finally watching Star Trek: The Original Series, I figured I would jump in too. It’s been a while since I watched any of Tos. Plus, I just finished rewatching Next Generation.
The original series was Gene Roddenberry’s true vision of a future where humans have evolved to become more enlightened, working for the betterment of humanity. So when I started to watch, I just jumped in where I had previously left off during another binge. (Thanks, Netflix, for holding my spot!) I jumped on Season 2 episode Patterns of Force.
If you haven’t seen this episode, it is when Kirk and Spock go looking for a missing Federation researcher John Gill and discover a planet full of Nazis. The planets of the system have been in a conflict, with the Zeons being hunted just as the Jews were. Kirk is forced to take action to save lives because the Prime Directive (which prohibits interference with developing cultures) was already broken by Gill restarting Nazi Germany.
It is a profound episode, showcasing the horrors of the holocaust. Even so, in 1968 when this episode aired Jews were still banned from clubs and businesses in America, still denied jobs and opportunities just because of their faith. By using this horrific event, Roddenberry was able, along with prominent Jewish actors, to remind the public that Jews were people just like them. Did it work? On a large scale, probably not. However, if it stuck with only a few people, those people could have grown to help end the cycle of hate.
This is the power of science fiction. It uses entertainment to teach us about the mistakes of the past and shows us the potential of the future. I can only wonder how Roddenberry would have reacted to our recent events. Mass shootings on the rise, with more groups targeted for religious affiliation, the color of their skin, or their sexual/gender orientation. I want to believe that he would have looked to take a stand against this ongoing cycle of hate.
It’s true that Star Trek never had a regular cast member that was considered Lgbtq at the time, but there were storylines throughout different seasons invoking those themes. I hope that the writers of the new show can continue Roddenberry’s practice of social commentary and have a Lgbtq character be a part of the show’s cast. We need to use the horrific act of violence in Orlando to change the image and social understanding of how any human, regardless of their sexual/gender orientation, should be treated.
In the episode I watched, the missing researcher tells Kirk “Even historians fail to learn from history and repeat the same mistakes.” It is a quote to think about. We, as a culture, are failing to learn from history. The attack against Pulse, an Lgbtq nightclub, sadly proves that. Unlike the TV show, we have no heroes beaming down to save the day. We need to learn to save ourselves. As a world community, we need to declare that ending the cycle of hate is our top priority. Our Prime Directive. This attack on the Lgbt community isn’t the first attack but together, maybe we can make it the last.
If you are a member of the Lgbtq community, then you have my support. If you are an ally like me, then make sure you show your support. The world needs to know that this problem affects everyone, not just this small group of people. Together is the only way we can make the world a better place, and bring us one step closer to a utopian world of enlightenment.

Maybe you think of "Jurassic Park" as the movie that surpassed "E.T." to become the biggest Steven Spielberg film ever, as well as one of the biggest hits of all time. Or maybe you think of it as the film that, through its landmark CGI dinosaurs, helped usher in the age of digital filmmaking. Or maybe you just think of it as the movie that scared the pants off you when you saw it in theaters two decades ago (the film marks its 20th anniversary on June 11) and every time you've watched it since on TV.
However you regard it, "Jurassic Park" has seemed a ubiquitous, inescapable fixture of pop culture for 20 years. And yet there are still things about it you may not know, such has how Spielberg chose his cast, how several teams of effects artists came together to build those pioneering dinosaurs, and whether or not it...

Courtney Galiano may not be a name you recognize, but "Glee" fans may recognize her face. Or, rather, her moves.
The former "So You Think You Can Dance" finalist and All-Star appears in "Glee: The 3D Concert Movie" as one of the backup dancers. This gig comes after appearing on the hit Fox television show a couple times – once as a member of Vocal Adrenaline, natch – and following familiar faces like Lea Michele and Cory Monteith on tour as a dancer both this summer and last.
The first time she appeared on "Glee"… The first episode that I did was “This is a Man’s World” when Quinn actually sang “This is a Man’s World” and I was pregnant, so it was pretty interesting. I sent my parents a picture; I was like “Surprise!” It was kind of funny.

Orlando Bloom was there and is now back again: Peter Jackson announced via his Facebook page today that Bloom, who portrayed Legolas in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, is the latest to join The Hobbit. “Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas,” Jackson wrote. “I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older — and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.”

It's been a bittersweet couple of days for the stars of the Harry Potter films. Having just completed filming on the second half of ...Deathly Hallows last Saturday, they were whisked away to Florida in order to celebrate the grand opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter for the rest of the week.
Wednesday marked a formal nighttime celebration, complete with John Williams conducting the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and J.K. Rowling making the most fleeting of appearances, while Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, Michael Gambon, Warwick Davis, Matthew Lewis, Bonnie Wright and the Phelps twins stuck around for Thursday's interviews and Friday's very public Grand Opening.

The cast members of Harry Potter, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton, walked a red carpet at a VIP event at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the new theme park celebrating its grand opening at the Universal Orlando resort in Florida. The park recreates the mythical Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from Jk Rowling’s phenomenally popular novels about a boy wizard. The actors who starred in the movie version were filmed and then projected to create a presence on some of the rides, giving the impression the characters are there with park ...

Orlando, Florida — Magic was seemingly everywhere on Wednesday night at Universal Orlando's grand-opening celebration for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The theme park doesn't officially open to the public until June 18, but Universal brought in the stars of the film and conductor/composer John Williams to kick things off with a bang.
Though many of the stars of the "Harry Potter" films have come to see the park over the past several months, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, James and Oliver Phelps, Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis, and Warwick Davis were given a special tour of Wizarding World's many attractions on Wednesday so they would be primed to speak about them.

Jake Gyllenhaal is trying to prevent the Iraq War.
But maybe I'm getting ahead of myself. You want to know what they did with that video game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, in its big-budget translation to the big screen. I can only speak to the inclusion of the game's most appealing element, a magical dagger with which players could briefly rewind time at any critical moment.
Other than that, our prince - now named Dastan and played by Jake Gyllenhaal instead of you - rises from peasantry à la Aladdin, is capable of much parkour, and ends up framed for murdering the king that took him in. Naturally, a magical dagger might come in handy for clearing one's name when there are foes galore, and when a comely lass (Gemma Arterton) insists on keeping close so long as you possess it, of course you'd keep it around.

The Mann Chinese Theater in La was hopping with celebrities last night in attendance for three big Jerry Bruckheimer events. The afternoon kicked off with Jerry's Hollywood Walk of Fame dedication followed by the Prince of Persia premiere while his films Armageddon, Pirates of the Caribbean, and National Treasure simultaneously screened. Orlando Bloom spoke to the audience at the Pirates screening while Justin Bartha and Jon Voight shared their experiences with the National Treasure franchise. Stars from the present and past mingled during the events - Prince of Persia star Jake Gyllenhaal even posed with Top Gun legend Tom Cruise. The fun continued into the night when the party moved to the Hollywood & Highland Ballroom, where Jake hopefully showed off some of those famous dance moves. Real-life gay couples who both act, and whether Mark Indelicato and Chris Colfer will end up bitter and typecast like Sean Hayes! Plus, a Simon Rex sex-tape scandal primer!
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: I have always had a massive movie crush on the ever-darling Simon Rex. I was not of the generation that lived through his rise to stardom and/or the revelation of pre-stardom past. How did he survive it? How did the gay community go through it? It seems stunning to me that the news of his past is not more widely discussed. Was it well discussed in the past, or simply a notch on a tabloid page? Did he ever fend off allegations of him being gay? – Maharajah, West Palm Beach, Fl

MoviesOnline took a trip down the Rabbit Hole this weekend with Johnny Depp, one of Hollywood’s most compelling actors, who talked to us about his new film, Alice in Wonderland. The epic 3D fantasy adventure directed by the visionary Tim Burton offers a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time.
Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska plays the 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world, the Underland, that she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: The White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter.
The all-star cast also includes Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Crispin Glover as Stayne-Knave of Hearts, and Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Providing the voices for Underland’s menagerie...

After days of talking about anti-abortion Super Bowl commercials and cheesy dating site commercials, we can sit back and watch something more traditional with this ad for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which is opening at Universal Orlando this spring. And while this seems a logical fit to a Super Bowl commercial, does it feel low rent to anyone else? I just fails to Wow! me for $2.6 million and a $600 million park expansion.
As we've established, I don't watch Lost. I just can't make that kind of commitment to a show. I can't make that much of a commitment to a husband, dog, or frankly a houseplant. So I love this parody of how absolutely ridiculous the show is from the unaired E! sketch comedy show TV Wasteland.

I'm going to go political on you guys for a second because frankly I'm irritated.

I was fortunate enough to meet Electra Avellan at the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida recently, and she was kind enough to talk with me about her career, inspirations, favorite movies and actors, and also what it's like to be a part of one of the most famous film families working in cinema today.
Jason Anders/Fangoria: So let's talk about the new film you will be appearing in, Machete, which will be directed by Robert Rodriguez; the film is based on the fake movie trailer of the same name from the Grindhouse feature film, and will star Danny Trejo supported by an all-star cast. What can you tell me about the production of this film, and also, what is it like working with family members such as Robert and your sister Elise on set?
Electra Avellan: I can't talk much about the production of the film. Not yet.

With his classic good looks, outspokenness and gritty life story, Jd Ordonez is making quite the splash on the latest edition of MTV’s The Real World. Set in Brooklyn, New York, this 22nd season may very well be the queerest Real World ever as it features not just the openly gay Jd, but bisexual Sarah and transgender Katelynn.
We recently caught up with the full-time dolphin trainer who talked frankly about his relationship with Katelynn, his anti-immigrant remarks, being a representative of the gay community on television, and whether he thinks of himself as a role model.

Jd Ordonez : Dolphins or men? [laughs] Well, lately it’s been dolphins. I really haven’t had a love life lately, so I’ve just been working a lot.

One interesting side effect of the meltdown on Wall Street is that part of the "sweetening" of the bailout bill authored by the Senate during the week of September 27-October 3, 2008, included a tax break aimed at film and TV production companies. They received an increase in the single-year deduction in production costs, from $15 million to $20 million, that they may take if the costs are incurred in economically depressed areas. In an effort to keep film and TV productions in the U.S., it also allows more companies to use a domestic production deduction.
Considering the state of the economy, it probably won't be too hard to qualify as a "depressed area" so it's likely that more independent productions will be able to remain here in the States instead of trekking up to Canada or over to Romania, which bodes well for the horror genre. At least that's how it seems on the surface,...
