Camera lens and cameraman's hand reflected in Mary-jo's mirror.
Despite references to "driving across country" from the East (West Virginia), all shots in the film are obviously from the area around Los Angeles.
May Jo calls a friend and mentions she and her daughter just left North Carolina. However, the desert-like terrain of the area through which they had been driving clearly was that of the Southwest and not the mountainous region of Appalachia.
Early in the film, while heading west to Missouri from North Carolina, Mary Jo glances out the driver's window and comments on the beautiful sunrise, which should have been behind the car (east), not to its left (south).
