What’s the secret acting trick to nailing a part in a Trey Parker and Matt Stone project? Shut the hell up and say the lines Trey Parker and Matt Stone wrote, of course.
When the South Park creators’ long-awaited comedic musical about their favorite friendly religious order, The Book of Mormon, premiered at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 2011, it was an instant hit. Critics and audiences praised the playwriting and the performances, specifically that of Frozen star Josh Gad in the role of Elder Cunningham. Then, when Gad left the show in 2012, the Book of Mormon producers scrambled to find an actor who could handle the chaotic script from Parker and Stone while most closely imitating Gad’s immaculate performance, hiring future Miracle Workers star Jon Bass to do his best Gad impression.
Very quickly, the creative team of The Book of Mormon realized that no one could...

We know for a fact that Trey Parker and Matt Stone couldn’t have stuffed South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut with more profanity if they tried — because they did.
When Parker, Stone and Paramount Pictures first submitted the 1999 film to the MPAA for evaluation, the dubiously diligent censors sent back the film with a dreaded, unmarketable Nc-17 rating due to excessive profanity. The South Park team then re-edited the franchise’s first feature length film to make it more palatable to the movie business’ most venal finger-waggers, only to get another Nc-17 result. Then, Parker and Stone made even more cuts to the cuss words. Another Nc-17.
Eventually, the South Park duo got fed up with the back-and-forth and asked the MPAA to tell them exactly what prevented South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut from getting a passable R-rating, and the agency noted that the most recent cut of...

Next time you wander into a movie theater and find yourself to be the subject of a comically catchy song near the climax of the film, just ask yourself: What would Brian Boitano do?
In the 1999 hit film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, franchise creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone flexed their showtune-writing muscles in a display of musical might that wouldn’t be matched until they opened their Tony-winning Broadway debut The Book of Mormon over a decade later. From “Kyle’s Mom’s A Big Fat Bitch” to “Blame Canada” to, of course, “What Would Brian Boitano Do?” (parts I and II), the first South Park movie is absolutely loaded with all-time great earworms that left audiences humming along as they exited the theater.

“Let’s make an R-rated cartoon about an R-rated cartoon coming out” was the original concept pitched when Matt Stone and Trey Parker were developing their classic animated musical opus, South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut. Twenty-five years later, it remains a brilliantly meta idea. But before Canada-blaming glory, South Park’s road to the silver screen was paved with many blockades, mainly from within their parent company of Viacom, which owned both Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures, and their biggest formidable foe, the then-named Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
And as if it wasn’t ironic enough, the biggest bone of contention was for the creators’ use of vulgarities within an anti-censorship-centric movie. In typical Matt and Trey fashion, whatever adversary they faced, they rebelled with nastier pushback against. And in the long run, this made for a more memorable film. Here’s a look back at the...

When it first came out, South Park took a lot of heat for warping the minds of America’s youth. Teachers banned T-shirts depicting the show’s characters, Christian organizations vowed to “protect our youth from vile trash like South Park” and a school in England sent out a newsletter to parents specifically warning them that the cartoon “contains obscenities, swearing, lavatorial actions and filth of a most unsavoury nature.”
So it’s a little surprising that, back in 1999, South Park co-creator Trey Parker was asked to give the commencement speech at his old high school in Evergreen, Colorado.
Looking back at the speech, which was recorded for posterity on a shitty ‘90s camcorder and eventually uploaded to YouTube, Parker actually did a nice job combining the jokes (and amusing voices) that teenagers undoubtedly would have been expecting, while also endeavoring to offer genuine advice to the graduates.

On June 30 1999, Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s infamous creation, South Park, made its leap from Comedy Central to the silver screen with South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Possibly the fastest example of a TV series making the jump to film, South Park was greenlit right at the end of the first season, and production started during the second and third seasons. Bigger, Longer and Uncut would go on to fully highlight the sheer magnitude of Parker and Stone’s comedic and satirical strengths, working as a metatextual commentary on censorship and scapegoating while dealing with its own veritable censors at the MPAA.
But more notably, the South Park movie showed how much of a musical theater-loving nut Parker was by fully embedding singing-and-dancing flair in his and Stone’s first animated feature venture. (Remember that Parker’s directorial debut was the Troma-released horror comedy Cannibal! The Musical.)

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut hit theaters and instantly became the greatest movie musical (that co-stars a dildo-wielding Saddam Hussein) ever made.
To commemorate the anniversary, a sing-a-long version of the R-rated cartoon was released in multiplexes this week. And shout out to the folks who had to put up with the muffled sounds of fans belting out “Uncle Fucka” while they were trying to watch Inside Out 2 with their children.
What’s truly remarkable about the movie, in retrospect, is that South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone originally intended for it to be a climactic end point for the show — a show that has now been on the air for 27 years. Which would explain why the film’s conclusion, including Kenny’s big face reveal, really does feel like an emotional goodbye to the world of South Park.

After 27 years, 26 seasons, and 325 episodes of television, South Park could be forgiven for wanting to try something new. So that’s exactly what creators, showrunners, and stars Trey Parker and Matt Stone are doing with their crass, yet beloved animated franchise.
When the duo reached a $900 million deal with MTV Entertainment Studios to produce new episodes of South Park through season 30, they also locked themselves in to creating 14 South Park movies for streaming service Paramount+. The first of these near feature-length specials, “South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid” premiered at the end of 2021 and has since been followed by many more.
Of course, South Park has never been afraid of extended running times. Recent seasons have experimented with serialization and the series even received its own theatrically-released film with South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut in 1999. But the consistent rate in which fans will now get supersized installments of Stan,...

What exactly is BASEketball anyway? If you’re a child of a certain era, you know exactly what it is. If not, well, let me explain. In the late nineties, the hottest comic duo was no doubt Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Together, they had charted a unique path to stardom. Two University Of Colorado grads, the two had their beginnings in the early nineties when they made a micro-budget indie called Cannibal: The Musical, which, despite failing to get into the Sundance Film Festival, became kind of a calling card for them. It got them a unique job directing a corporate film about Universal Pictures for Seagrams, who were acquiring the company, thanks to the patronage of David Zucker, one of the directors behind The Naked Gun, Top Secret and Airplane, who was a fan of their movie. They parlayed their success into a low-budget comedy called Orgazmo, which...

Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s Team America: World Police is debuting on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format: more here.
For their cinematic follow up to South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, writers and directors Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided it’d be a good idea to make a film with puppets. As we covered in a Film Stories podcast episode before, they would soon appreciate just how difficult it was to do.
The film that resulted from their labours was Team America: World Police, a brutally funny comedy action satire, with some memorable songs in the midst of it too. Originally released in 2004, to now mark the 20th birthday of the film, it’s got a 4K makeover, and is coming to the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format for the first time.
We’ve got Paramount to thank for this, who is issuing the film on 24th June 2024 on the format.

Paramount Global is planning a suite of streaming channel for South Park fans to launch on the ad-based service Pluto TV in international markets.

I fully expect “I’m Just Ken” to be a showstopper, especially now that Gosling has confirmed he’ll be the one behind the mic and it won’t be given to somebody not even associated with the movie. However, admittedly sometimes that works out extremely well, as when Robin Williams performed “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. And while that song lost to Tarzan’s “You’ll Be In My Heart”, you can’t tell me you remember Phil Collins’ performance that night.
Another oddball performance for a song...

If Disney made Christian movies, they would look like this, with Mary in the mould of Beauty and the Beast’s Belle, Joseph giving Aladdin vibes and Banderas stealing every scene
If you feel the need to watch a faith film, you could do far, far worse than this one, a decently staged musical treatment of the nativity that feels like a Christian version of a live action Disney movie. Mary (Fiona Palomo) is a heroine in the mould of Belle from Beauty and the Beast or Jasmine from Aladdin: bookish and dreaming of a world in which she gets to make her own life decisions, instead of being married off to some guy called Joseph (Milo Manheim) whom she’s never met. Luckily, he turns out to be quite puckish and hunky (also in the Aladdin vein), while your comic relief type characters take the form of the Three Wise Men.

From ‘Les Misérables’ to ‘West Side Story,’ here are IMDb viewers’ top picks for the best musicals ever brought to the big screen. Which is your favorite?
Musicals: They’re a realm where reality gracefully gives way to rapture, where spoken words don’t just bind characters but also the eloquent language of song and dance.
To the skeptics, musicals might seem an over-the-top or even trivial genre. Yet, when faced with the most masterful musicals ever made, it’s hard not to be swept away by their cinematic magic. The finest musicals entertain and deeply resonate, reaching even those who’d never typically hum along to a tune.

Lyrics that include the words “dick,” “fuck” and “pussy” are not the typical wholesome, family content the Academy’s Music Branch tends to recognize. But occasionally, they have allowed a couple to slip through. A24’s “Dicks: The Musical,” the opening night Midnight Madness at TIFF, has an onslaught of hilarious and catchy tunes that I wish the Oscars would be brave enough to nominate.
With so many hilarious tracks to choose from, including “Gay Old Life” and “The Sewer Song,” Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion brings down the house with her delivery on the rap and dance number “Out-Alpha the Alpha.” It could and should be one of the many songs to consider for this year’s Academy Awards, and distributor A24 confirms they’ll submit the movie for Oscar consideration.

“Our characters are wrestling with very contemporary situations,” explains Scott Wittman of the musical “Some Like it Hot.” He and Marc Shaiman are the Tony-winning songwriting duo behind the score. The pair was adamant that their tunes be used to expand and reinvent the characters for this stage adaptation, rather than simply copy what viewers would expect from the classic movie. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
When it comes to the overall musical style of the show, Shaiman exclaims ”I just took an MGM view of it all.” He explains that the classic MGM films from the 1920s, 30s and 40s all contain a similar sound full of big band and strings. ”I just wanted to make use of all the great sounds of really, almost 3 decades worth of swing and elegant, romantic, joyous music,” describes the composer. Is “Peaches” from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” one of the first Oscars original song contenders of the year?
The ultimate power ballad, sung by Jack Black as the evil Bowser, will be eligible to submit for best original song consideration at the Oscars, Universal has confirmed to Variety.
“Peaches” is all about Bowser’s unrequited love. And the subject of his adoration? Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor Joy), who is the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. The song is co-written by Black, the film’s directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, as well as Eric Osmond and John Spiker.
In the movie, Bowser is sitting at his piano belting out the ballad. He sings, “Peach, you’re so cool And with my star we’re gonna rule. Peach, understand, I’m gonna love you ’til the very end. Princess Peach, at the end of the line, I’ll make you mine.

Those who were alive in 1999 will be able to recall the tremendous drama surrounding the release of George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace." It was perhaps one of the most anticipated films of all time, with some audience members camping out on sidewalks for days, waiting to get tickets (a necessity in a time prior to internet ticket sales). Before streaming technology was widely available (YouTube didn't debut until 2005), people used their dial-up modems to download the "Phantom Menace" trailer, a practice that took the better part of a day. The film bow to respectful, if modest, applause from critics.
But very quickly, public perception turned sour. Many soon recognized that the script was clunky, the story wasn't terribly interesting, and the characters were flat, dray, and inhuman. Many pointed specifically to Jake Lloyd, who played the young Anakin Skywalker, as one of the central reasons the film didn't work.

At the top of "Simpsons" fans' lists of their favorite episodes is usually the season 4 classic "Marge vs. the Monorail." Written by Conan O'Brien, the episode is "The Simpsons" at perhaps its sharpest and most energetic. There are a million jokes per minute here, all of them hits. And even if you don't find them all funny, at least you can enjoy the catchy musical number the show uses to introduce Lyle Lanley, the smooth-talking salesman who tricks the town into spending all their money on a monorail that doesn't work.
It's not a full-on parody or anything, but the song Lanley sings is inspired by "Ya Got Trouble," from the 1962 film "The Music Man," a sequence where a con-man (played by Robert Preston) stirs up a moral panic and uses it to convince the townsfolk to let him start a marching band. Just like Lyle, the guy plans to...

"The Simpsons Movie" may have made the joke about paying to see something you get on television for free, but there's a certain thrill that comes with seeing one of your favorite shows make the transfer to the big screen. I may have hopped aboard almost a decade into its run, but I adore "Bob's Burgers" and all of the delightfully weird characters of Seymour's Bay. I think it's safe to say that the Belchers have earned their place among the great sitcom families, especially since Bob and Lina actually nurture their children's idiosyncrasies.
Seymour's Bay is structured like a summer town so it makes sense to turn the animated sitcom into a summer blockbuster to compliment the series' sunny aesthetic. I really enjoyed "The Bob's Burgers Movie," for the most part, as it stands by its characters while exploring beyond familiar environments and all of the secrets within. At its center,...

“Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe” is only the second Beavis and Butt-Head movie — after “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America,” which came out (are you ready to feel old?) in 1996. That’s a long time to put a franchise about the world’s dumbest, horniest, and most meta teenage metal-heads on hold. But I’m not sure that the world was clamoring for another Beavis and Butt-Head movie, and this one isn’t exactly the “Top Gun: Maverick” of B & B-Head sequels. It is, however, a shaggy, snark-infused lark that’s likable enough to get by. The first movie, amusing as some of it was, never found the cultural foothold that “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” did, and the reason is that Beavis and Butt-Head were most at home on their MTV series, a form that mirrored their fractured attention spans — and that allowed them, of course, to critique music videos,...

‘Bob’s Burgers’, ‘Elizabeth: A Portrait In Parts’ competing with the blockbuster.
Long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick takes flight in 737 UK-Ireland cinemas this weekend through Paramount – the fifth widest opening of all time in the territory.
The number – coincidentally a significant one for the aviation industry – is also the third-widest opening for a 12A certificate film, behind Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker and No Time To Die.
Top Gun: Maverick is one of the last blockbusters that were originally scheduled for the pandemic months to hit cinemas. It was originally dated for July 12, 2019, before a delay to June 26, 2020 due filming certain action sequences.

Before its 13th season premieres this fall, the adult animated sitcom “Bob’s Burgers” is hitting the big screen. “The Bob’s Burgers Movie” opens on the prime Memorial Day weekend — even as the show was one of the least-watched broadcast series of the 2021-22 season, according to Nielsen. An average of 1.61 million people watched episodes on Fox (and that includes one week of DVR viewing), ranking “Bob’s” right between the off-time-slot episodes of “Kenan” at 8:30 p.m. and “Home Sweet Home” — two cancelled NBC shows that won’t get a film adaptation anytime soon.
So what gives? It comes at a time when adult animation has never been hotter, particularly for younger audiences. Those are the same audiences who flock to streaming platforms, not all of which are measured by Nielsen. According to Fox figures, which include proprietary data shared with IndieWire for this story, “Bob’s Burgers” is the network’s second-most-streamed show,...

On March 9, LGBTQ employees and allies at Pixar Animation Studios sent a joint statement to Walt Disney Company leadership claiming that Disney executives had actively censored “overtly gay affection” in its feature films. The stunning allegation — made as part of a larger protest over the company’s lack of public response to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill — did not include which Pixar films had weathered the censorship, nor which specific creative decisions were cut or altered.
But in at least one case, the statement appears to have made a significant difference.
According to a source close to the production, Pixar’s next feature film, “Lightyear” — starring Chris Evans as the putative real-life inspiration for the “Toy Story” character Buzz Lightyear — does feature a significant female character, Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba), who is in a meaningful relationship with another woman. While the fact of that relationship was never in question at the studio,...

Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation are teaming with Lafig Belgium and Imps on the “Smurfs” films, tapping Pam Brady, the co-writer of “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” and “Team America: World Police,” to write the first film. And the studio has also set the first of the movies to be released on Dec. 20, 2024, with production kicking off later this year.
As part of the announcement, Nickelodeon has also picked up the CG animated TV series “The Smurfs” for a second season of 26 episodes after the show first launched in September. Undoubtedly, composer Marc Shaiman has had a hand in something in pop culture that you love dearly. “The American President,” “Hairspray,” “Smash,” “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut,” “Sister Act,” “The First Wives Club,” “Beaches,” the list goes on and on — and in every medium to boot. He needs one Oscar to go Egot, and is the go-to when you need some tuneful punch-up on awards ceremonies, anniversary shows and late-night mainstays. But even he gets surprised by some of the attention he gets.
Case in point: Shaiman was tapped to write a funny, highly meta credits song for “Soundtrack of Our Lives,” a limited-time-only June 2020 YouTube benefit for MusicCares’ Covid-19 relief fund. It was simply called “The End Titles,” and he not only wrote it, but sang it as well, super-imposed over an insanely starry mega-roll while posing queries such as “What is a best boy? Isn’t there a best girl?...

“South Park” was the talk of Hollywood on August 5 after news broke that series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker landed a $900-million deal with ViacomCBS to continue the animated show through 2027 (bringing the total number of seasons to 30) and create 14 original “South Park” movies exclusively for the company’s Paramount+ streaming platform.
Stone gave his first in-depth interview on the deal to Bloomberg’s Screentime newsletter, saying the mega-deal now gives the “South Park” duo “‘fuck you’ money.” Stone and Parker released the first “South Park” movie, “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut,” in 1999. As for the 14 features to come, Stone said “streaming movies is pretty promising.”
“The show is 22 minutes. It’s a sitcom. It is ancient, in a way. But we still really love that,” Stone said. “There are ‘South Park’ episodes that are high concept enough where if you wanted to make a movie you could.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are keeping their longtime animated series “South Park” going through at least 2027, ViacomCBS has announced. This year’s Oscar Original Song shortlist has recognized a number of tunes from Black narrative or documentary films, while at the same time kept up an Academy tradition of begin able to embrace a silly song. On Tuesday that specifically meant “Wuhan Flu” from Amazon’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and “Husavik” from Netflix’s Will Ferrell-Rachel McAdams comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga both made the first cut.
“Wuhan Flu” and “Husavik” follows in the tradition of AMPAS honoring such satirical tunes as “Blame Canada” from 2000’s South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, and the Bret McKenzie-penned ditty “Man or Muppet” in 2011 from The Muppets.

Can we agree that among the eight Oscar nominations granted “A Star Is Born,” its likeliest win will be Best Song for “Shallow”? That soaring ballad sold the music-packed showbiz saga’s first trailer like nobody’s business as Lady Gaga‘s Ally started to roar before a mic. The pop chanteuse herself would receive the honor alongside her co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. The song has already won a Golden Globe and is up for four Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Judging by the combined odds chart based on rankings by Experts, Editors and Users, “Shallow’s” support is quite deep, with more than 2,200 predicting it will win.

Mary Poppins Returns can’t possibly be expected to transcend its historical foundation. It’s been over half a century since the Disney original seeped its way into the collective consciousness. Julie Andrews is all but synonymous with the stern, yet cheerful magical nanny. Songs like “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and other Sherman Brothers’ creations are now musical standards. Hence, any long-in-the-making, Disney-stamped sequel will inevitably be forced to pay homage to the original and re-introduce the concept of Mary Poppins to a new generation. Mary Poppins Returns serves too many cultural and financial masters to be its own beast, so it’s forced to make space in a middle ground circumscribed by nostalgia.

New Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins has made a second key programming executive hire, bringing in Oscar-nominated producer Ramsey Naito as Evp of Animation Production and Development.
