Chinese director Hu Guan’s drama Black Dog snagged the top prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard sidebar on Friday night.
The drama, set on the edge of the Gobi desert in Northwest China, follows a man who returns home after a stint in jail and gets a job clearing a town of stray dogs before the Olympic Games. But he forms an unexpected bond with a black dog, and together, they embark on a new journey.
The film’s canine star won a pooch prize earlier in the day, scooping up the Grand Jury award at the Palm Dog.
For Un Certain Regard, the Jury Prize went to The Story Of Souleymane, Boris Lojkine’s Paris-set story of an African immigrant struggling to make a living and get legalized in the city of lights. Lead Abou Sangare also clinched one of the Un Certain Regard performance awards. The other...

Jennifer Esposito shocked Blue Bloods fans when she appeared in the season 13 finale. Esposito reprised her role as Jackie Curatola for the first time in 10 years. The sudden appearance of the familiar face has fans wondering what it means for the show’s future. Will Jackie return to the Blue Bloods universe for good? While seeing Danny Reagan’s old partner return for good would be nice, it seems unlikely that Jennifer Esposito will be rejoining the Blue Bloods cast.
Jennifer Esposito’s exit from the ‘Blue Bloods’ cast was full of bad blood
Because of her controversial exit, Esposito’s return to Blue Bloods was a huge shock to fans. Esposito was written out of the series in season 3 when her Celiac Disease diagnosis led her to ask the network to consider a part-time schedule. They declined the request and suspended her instead.

While in production for Theater Camp, costume designer Michelle J. Li took a trip down memory lane to visit her high school theater department to figure out what kids were really wearing these days.
“I wanted to gain a sense of authenticity,” Li tells The Hollywood Reporter. With a background in theater that led her to the Carnegie Mellon drama school, along with a lifetime of attending Broadway shows with her family, Li, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, always knew she would end up in a creative field.
“The stereotype is that many Asian immigrant parents dissuade their children from pursuing entertainment or careers that are less financially stable, and it makes total sense,” she explains. “However, my parents did encourage me to pursue art, and so I always knew that I was going to land in something creative.”

Bowen Yang is trying to get back on the horse after a production mishap.
The “SNL” star detailed how while filming “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” Season 3, he “almost died” after a horse he was riding was spooked at the sight of a drone.
“Actually, [it’s] not fun to be on a horse,” Yang said during his “Las Culturistas” podcast. “[I’ve] ridden a horse for camera. Guess what? This crew, and I love this crew, but this crew decided to have a drone, and of course the horse don’t know what the fuck that is, and then I almost died.”
He continued, “I almost died in Iceland! Even hundreds of yards away, these horses can clock. They were spooked and then I almost [fell off]. I almost got bucked, and there was part of me, though, that was like, ‘This is a good way to go.'”

A horse is a horse, of course, of course. And riding them can be a challenge, as Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang recalled on a recent episode of his Las Culturistas podcast.
Yang’s experience with death by horse came while riding horseback on the set of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens in Iceland.
“Actually, not fun, not fun to be on a horse,” Yang said. “[I’ve] ridden a horse for camera. Guess what? This crew, and I love this crew, but this crew decided to have a drone, and of course the horse don’t know what the f— that is, and then I almost died.”
“I didn’t tell you this?” Yang then asked his cohost, Matt Rogers, and their guest star Patrick Rogers. “I almost died in Iceland!”
A drone flew too close to the horse Yang was riding, spooking it.

This comes after Netflix set new leadership for the Animation Film team with Karen Toliver (VP Animation Film Content) and Traci Balthazor (VP Animation Film Production). They have been tasked with streamlining the animation team, which explains the attrition.
This does not signal a downturn in animation output for a division that in five years had seven Oscar nominees, with a win for If Anything Happens, I Love You.
Netflix’s original animation productions includes Robin, Robin, Klaus, Kris Pearn’s The Willoughbys, Over the Moon, Back to the Outback, Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood from Richard Linklater, and the recently released The Sea Beast directed by Chris Williams. This marks a return to Sony for Hsiao who started her career in TV development at the studio six years ago with a comedy project that sold to ABC.

Dakota Johnson has landed the starring role in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the Jane Austen novel “Persuasion,” the feature directorial debut of acclaimed theater director Carrie Cracknell. The director most recently worked on Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge’s Tony-nominated performances in the play “Sea Wall/A Life.” The film adaptation is written by “Rain Man” Oscar winner Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow.
The film promises to take a fresh approach to the beloved story. Here’s Netflix’s logline: “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.”
Dakota Johnson recently starred in the cancer drama “Our Friend,” released by Gravitas earlier this year.

Five Flavours Asian Film Festival invite you for a journey through taste, colors, and sounds of the Asian continent, hoping they can provide food for your thoughts and solace for your spirits.
The Programme of this year’s Festival comprises more than forty titles representing the extreme variety of Asian cinemas – from horror cinema to sweet melodramas, from grasping auteur cinema to relaxing journeys around the continent.
All the films will be presented online between November 25 and December 6.
Preparing this year’s edition forced the organisers to face up to completely new challenges – from the matters of logistics to finding new ways of thinking about their mission, priorities, building bridges between filmmakers and audiences outside the screening rooms. The online edition of the Festival is not a compromise, but a different way to reach the, perhaps even wider, audiences, discover the rich variety of Asian cultures, and explore the contemporary...

Disney+ blasted off into space — or at least prepared to — with Friday’s premiere of the Mercury Seven series The Right Stuff. But are you along for the flight?
Before you chime in with your thoughts, a brief recap of the first half of the two-episode premiere and its major players: The drama begins with a tension-filled scene on May 5, 1961, aka the day the first American man would be launched into space. Astronaut Alan Shepard (played by Limitless‘ Jake McDorman) accuses his Mercury Seven teammate John Glenn (Suits‘ Patrick J. Adams) of going behind his back.

An emerging generation of new Basque filmmakers is making its mark in the San Sebastian Festival, building on the foundations of now consolidated creative and industrial infrastructures.
Only time will tell if the Basque Country can follow in the footsteps of Catalonia, another richer region of Spain, and launch a modern day new wave. Expectations however, remain high.
The new generation is widely represented at this year’s San Sebastian.
A prominent member of the group is David Pérez Sañudo, whose highly anticipated feature debut, mother-daughter social drama “Ane,” plays at the festival’s New Directors sidebar. Handled by Latido Films, “Ane” was developed at the Madrid Film School Ecam Incubator, then won three prizes at Málaga’s Wip in April.
Imanol Rayo, winner of the Zinemira Award with “Bi anai” in 2011, presents in New Directors his rural tale “Hil Kanpaiak” (“Death Knell”), produced by Bilbao-based Abra Prod.

This quality in this year’s crop of home-grown productions at the San Sebastian Festival is no surprise to anyone following the region’s growth in recent years, but it is impressive.
Below, 20 Basque projects and finished films and series which stand out at this year’s event.
“Akelarre,” (Pablo Agüero)
A former San Sebastian Festival Co-Production Forum project, “Akelarre” is the latest from Cannes Jury Prize-winner Pablo Agüero (“First Snow”) and plays in this year’s main competition. Heavily influenced by Jules Michelet’s novel “The Witch,” Agüero’s period drama came from a “feeling of injustice that almost all works of fiction dealing with witch hunts perpetuate, clichés first created by the Inquisition.” Seven companies combined on the ambitious co-production.

Spanish producer-distributor and sales agent Filmax will handle international rights on Lara Izagirre’s “Nora,” the film opener at this year’s San Sebastian Zinemira Basque cinema showcase.
Selected for San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum in 2018, “Nora” is Izagirre’s second feature, following on ”An Autumn Without Berlin,” a Basque homecoming drama which scored a best new actress Goya award for Irene Escolar in 2016.
A co-production between Gariza Films and Tandem Films in Spain and France’s La Fidèle Production, “Nora” turns on a 30-year-old woman who lives with her grandfather in a small village in the north of the Basque Country. When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2020 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider a whopping 111 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is up by three contenders from last year. Luckily they don’t have to limit their choices to just 10 shows. The Emmys did away with that restriction in 2017. Now, the TV academy tells its members to “Vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”

As part of the post-merger integration at the new Entertainment & Youth division, run by Chris McCarthy, there will be a further consolidation of top creative executives under Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer for the entire group, I have learned.
President of Entertainment & Youth Studios Keith Cox, who was promoted alongside Babineau in January, will oversee scripted development and scripted studio production across the portfolio,...

In the last two years, we’ve witnessed the meteoric rise of Awkwafina from YouTube rapper to silver screen darling with the uncanny ability to make audiences gut-laugh and weep into their popcorn.
You might recognize her as Rachel Chu’s off-the-wall quirky college roommate Peik Lin in Crazy Rich Asians or thoughtful writer Billi in The Farewell.
This year started on a sweet note for Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, too: In January, she became the first Asian woman to win “Best Actress” at the Golden Globes for her performance in The Farewell.

Barcelona – “20,000 Species of Bees,” “Something Like Happiness” and “Los quinquis” are among five feature projects that will be put through development at the Ecam Madrid Film School’s pioneering Incubator program.
The Incubator forms part of The Screen, a program at the Ecam Madrid Film School, which is aimed at fostering links between on-the-rise Spain-based talent and Europe’s film and TV industries.
Produced by Gariza Films, “20,000 Species of Bees ” marks the debut feature of Estibaliz Urresola. It weighs in with the logline: “What would you do if your six-year-old son says he is a she?”
“It’s not just a movie about transgender children,” Urresola said, adding: “It is a story about our inner lives and how they interplay with the world outside; about the boundaries between these two worlds— and also about violence committed in family, even in the name of love.”
Director-producer Lara Izagirre directed Basque homecoming drama “An Autumn Without Berlin.

Riders of New York City’s 7 train were surprised to hear the raspy voice of comedian Awkwafina as the first-ever celebrity enlisted to announce the 22 stops on the train that runs through the heart of Queens and into Manhattan.
Comedy Central has set an unusual pact with Mta New York City Transit to have the Golden Globe winner deliver all of the stop announcements and special messages that air over the public address system on the 7 train as a promotional effort for her autobiographical series “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.” The subway takeover began on Thursday and will run through Jan. 22, the day the show premieres.
The concept was the brainchild of Comedy Central’s marketing department. The idea was developed internally and was eagerly embraced by the Mta and its advertising partner, Outfront Media. The 7 train was the natural choice for the takeover as it runs through Flushing, which...

“The Farewell” was shut out of the Oscar nominations on Monday, but Awkwafina is “grateful” for the awards love the film did receive this season, including her historic Golden Globe win.
“’The Farewell came out last January at Sundance and we really didn’t know where it would take us. And to see all the attention that it’s gotten, it feels like a win,” Awkwafina said at Tuesday’s Television Critics Association winter press tour during a panel for her new Comedy Central series “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.”
Last week, Awkwafina made history as the first Asian winner of the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical Actress. But the Lulu Wang film was blanked completely during Monday’s Oscar nominations. Had Awkwafina gotten in, she would’ve been the first Asian-American nominated for Best Actress and the first Asian nominee in the category since 1935.

Awkwafina is poised to become the first Asian-American woman ever nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award if the season plays out in her favor. The last time an Asian woman was nominated in this category was 1935, with Merle Oberon — who was born in what was then British India — for “The Dark Angel.” Awkwafina’s shattering performance in “The Farewell” presents a riff on director Lulu Wang’s own story as the daughter of a family laboring to keep their grandmother’s terminal cancer diagnosis a secret. IndieWire presents a moving, exclusive clip from the film below.
In regard to her minority status in Hollywood, Awkwafina told IndieWire over the summer, back when A24 released “The Farewell” to strong box office return for an indie, “I think that if I am cast in a production, already that means that production is kind of forward-thinking…Hiring me is always a risk,...
