Guru Dutt’s masterpiece ‘Pyaasa’ (1957), just before its soulful dirge on relationships, shows two poets reciting ‘shers’. The elder one later also politely reprimands a guest for his snide remark at the “servant” (Dutt), who had begun humming “Jaane woh kaise log the..”, declaring: “Mian, shayri koi daulat-mando ke jagir thodi hai”. Though unnamed, his appearance, sher, and comment were enough to identify him.
The unnamed actor was representing Ali Sikandar ‘Jigar Moradabadi’, who, in his heyday, was so known by his persona – an intense gaze but an air of absent-mindedness too, groomed beard but slightly unkempt long hair, traditional garb and courtly behaviour, as well as poetry, that he could be shown without being named.
‘Jigar’ is seen as the last standard-bearer of the classical ghazal, or the ghazal’s classical tradition, but was rather a ‘bridge’, between its highpoint in the mid-19th century and its transition to the 20th century and beyond.

Parallel cinema cuts loose from the musicality of Bollywood and the common perception of Indian cinema at large. Coming out of West Bengal in the 1950s, parallel cinema appeared as an alternative to the glamour and dance; socially conscious and experimental in style and mood, it maps the origins of art cinema in India, and for the first time, the rest of the world was looking at India as an innovator of film language (Satyajit Ray’s 1955 train sequence Pather Panchali is one of the most celebrated in film history). In this movement, which followed in the wake of Italian neorealism, life's diegetics became the soundtrack, real life movement over set up musical numbers. This mix traces some choice moments in Parallel Cinema’s sound. The handsome Pakistani crooner Mustafa Zahid is emotional about his new track ‘Bhula Dena’ from the forthcoming Aashiqui-2, directed by Mohit Suri. The singer and director hit it off during Awarapan way back in 2007, when Zahid rendered the film’s hit tracks ‘Toh Phir Aao’ and ‘Tera Mera Rishta’.
Suri offered him the song from Aashiqui-2 saying it was to be in memory of his late father, Daksh, who passed away a few weeks before the release of his Murder-2. Producer Mahesh Bhatt felt that no voice other than Mustafa’s would suit the film’s highlight song.
Remarks Zahid from the UK, “This track appears in the climax of the film. I promised Mohit that I’ll make the audience cry when they walk out!” He adds, “The track has a special place in my heart also because during its dubbing, my manager and friend Faisal...
