There’s nothing worse in this world than the rat race.
I bet when you learned there was a sequel to last year’s The Cult Of That Wilkin Boy, a story about the cult-like fandom surrounding a massive pop star, you probably weren’t envisioning an Office Space-type story to be at the heart of its sequel. Okay, that’s not entirely accurate, either, but there are definitely some points made about the literal soul-sucking nature of paperwork, legal red tape, and working for the man.
Office Space itself might not be a horror movie, but so many of us can relate to the horrors of the rigamarole of working life. Of cubicles, deadlines, pesky co-workers, the onslaught of emails—sure, it may all sound like very first-world, 21st-century problems, but they’re ubiquitous enough that so many can relate. It’s not just that work sucks, it...

One of the great dilemmas facing American society in the 2020s is the question of how much time we actually need to spend working. For many, the Covid-19 pandemic and the flexible work-from-home accommodations it ushered in were evidence that they could get their jobs done without 40 hours of synchronized work each week. Others had bigger epiphanies and decided to prioritize free time over corporate glory by “quiet quitting” or abandoning their careers altogether. It feels like the country has reached a paradoxical crossroads in which many white-collar workers are deriving a higher percentage of their identity from their jobs while simultaneously looking to spend less time doing them.
But while the vague concept of “more free time” has become the MacGuffin motivating countless workaholics to make big life changes, the problem of what to actually do with it can be harder to solve. That’s a lesson that Drew...

Mike Judge and his Office Space cast reunited at South by Southwest Film & TV Festival for a panel discussion March 9 sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter about the beloved and influential film — a title that arguably reinvented the workplace comedy for the modern age and popularized the concept of quiet quitting. While the panel discussion tackled several intriguing aspects about the film’s creation and reception (some highlights below), Judge revealed a few extra tidbits at the post-panel reception at Austin’s The Statesman restaurant.
Asked if there was anything he would change about the film (which was famously difficult to get made, with the writer-director fending off a blizzard of studio executive Tps reports, er, notes), Judge offhandedly noted he hasn’t seen his film since before it was released in 1999. Everybody in earshot of this (including star Ron Livingston) looked surprised, given the film initially flopped at the box...

The romcom ruled the 1980s, and the Apatow comedies ruled the 2000s. The tastes may change, but films that bring incredible chemistry to the screen stand the test of time. It’s why we still watch When Harry Met Sally and The Forty-Year-Old Virgin decades after their release. Babes — a new film from Illana Glazer, Pamela Adlon, and Josh Rabinowitz, wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Yet, with Glazer in the lead, it’s got a unique sense of humor by returning to her Broad City roots.
Babes Plot
Best friends Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) watch movies every Thanksgiving. However, this year, Dawn goes into labor during the tradition. After helping Dawn to the hospital, Eden heads home for the night. While on the subway, she meets an actor who shares all of her interests. The two head home and have a one-night stand. Weeks later, Eden discovers she’s pregnant.

"Office Space," Mike Judge's satirical take on white collar office culture, disappointed at the box office but soon became a cult favorite after it arrived in 1999. That was mostly thanks to home video sales and Comedy Central airing the film multiple times after its theatrical run. But "Office Space" thoroughly deserved whatever cult status it attained, because it always felt very much ahead of its time.
The film stars Ron Livingston as Peter Gibbons, a put-upon programmer who spends his days amid the bleakly oppressive environs of software company Initech. After being hypnotized to stop caring about his job, Peter takes a lackadaisical approach to work and surprisingly begins to climb his way up the corporate ladder. But when his colleagues Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu) and Michael Bolton (David Herman) are fired, Peter and his friends mastermind a plan to steal money from Initech via a software virus. The...

Samara Weaving is buckling up for 20th Century Studios forthcoming heist thriller Eenie Meanie. Sitting shotgun for the project is Karl Glusman, with writer-director Shawn Simmons at the helm. Producing the fast-paced thriller is Deadpool franchise alums Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
In Eenie Meanie, Samara Weaving plays Edie, “a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.” (via Deadline)
Glusman hits the pavement as John, Edie’s recurrent boyfriend. Despite their differences, Edie feels compelled to pull John out of the flames of a terrible situation.
As one of my favorite actors in the business today, Samara Weaving is a force of nature. For some of her best performances, check out Joe Lynch’s Mayhem. The 2017 action-comedy is like Office Space meets The Raid and is a must-watch.

Office Space is celebrating its 25th anniversary following its delayed path to success, although hopefully no one would get their ass kicked for saying something like that.
Released Feb. 19, 1999, director Mike Judge’s enduring and endlessly quotable workplace satire follows computer programmer Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston), who decides to stop caring about his day job and teams up with Initech co-workers Michael Bolton (David Herman) and Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu) to defraud the company. The Fox comedy — featuring such on-the-rise performers as Jennifer Aniston, John C. McGinley, Gary Cole and Stephen Root — collected just $10 million at the time but became a cult favorite after finding a following through cable and home video.
Other standouts from the cast include Richard Riehle as engineer liaison Tom Smykowski, who defends his job (“I have people skills!”) to Paul Willson and McGinley as the two Bobs who are put in charge of layoffs. In...

"I believe you have my stapler." Odds are, the majority of people who enjoy comedy films would be able to tell you that quote is from "Office Space." Directed by "Beavis and Butthead" creator Mike Judge, it was his first live-action feature and would probably rank near the top of any list of things he's made if one were to conduct an informal survey of his fans. That's the way it is now. In 1999 when the film first hit theaters? Not so much. "Office Space" majorly disappointed against high expectations and, at least at first, seemed like it was going to be forgotten to time. Then a straight-up cult developed around the workplace comedy and it's now a part of the fabric of popular culture.

“Midnight Mass” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” actor Samantha Sloyan is set to star in upcoming sci-fi comedy Invaders from Proxima B. Variety reports today that the sci-fi comedy has been acquired by Buffalo 8.

Like many productions last year, Severance season 2 was brought to a halt due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but Ben Stiller took to X this morning to announce that filming has finally resumed.

Severance stars Adam Scott as Mark Scout, who leads a team at Lumon Industries “whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in ‘work-life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself.”
Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, Tramell Tillman, Michael Chernus, and Christopher Walken have all returned for the new season, with a few new additions as well.

This year celebrates 25 years since the final year of the 1900’s. A year that brought about such classics as The Matrix, Fight Club, American Pie, and Office Space as well as my personal favorite movie of all time: Arlington Road. The year was so successful that 20 years later it would inspire a book titled Best Movie Year Ever.
With a vast cannon of films ranging from highly anticipated block busting prequels (Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace) to that years’ eventual Best Picture winner American Beauty and a movie that changed the meaning of twist endings forever (The Sixth Sense) 1999 truly was a year for the ages.
I will be honest, after compiling last weeks list for Best Movies from 1994 and now this list, I have to say 1994 was far more deserving of its own book! But that isn’t to say that 1999 doesn’t have a number of...

"On air!" Peacock has revealed an official trailer for a streaming series debuting later in January called In The Know, a fun riff on NPR office life. It's co-created by Brandon Gardner, Zach Woods, and comedy mastermind Mike Judge. This public radio parody follows the making of NPR's fictional "third most popular host" Lauren Caspian's radio program, where he conducts in-depth interviews with special guests – including Kaia Gerber, Ken Burns, Finn Wolfhard, Norah Jones, Mike Tyson, Hugh Laurie, Jorge Masvisdal, and more. "He's a well-meaning, hypocritical nimrod, just like you and me. He's also a stop motion puppet." The show features stop-motion animation from ShadowMachine (the same place that also made Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio) and a voice cast featuring Zach Woods as Lauren, Charlie Bushnell, J. Smith-Cameron, Mike Judge, Caitlin Reilly, & Carl Tart. The cleverest part are the interviews with real people spliced with all the other antics.

Every now and then a clip pops up on the internet involving a celebrity that makes you go, Yeah, that’s me! That’s the case with an interview with Eddie Murphy from just earlier this year, in which he revealed that he and Tracy Morgan constantly text each other lines from the original Planet of the Apes.
In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Eddie Murphy was asked about his texting habits with pal Tracy Morgan, with the late night talk show host asking the comedian to give him some examples of their exchanges. Murphy first came up with – while mimicking Dr. Zaius (as played by Maurice Evans) and mock-texting – “Where is your nest at?” to which Morgan will text back, “Thank God for calling me Taylor”, as spoken by Charlon Heston’s George Taylor. Murphy also remembered watching Planet of the Apes repeatedly, even owning the action figures – well,...

Walmart is still trying to make “fetch” happen.
The giant retailer hopes to draw new attention to its Black Friday offerings by getting a jump on advertising around the annual holiday-shopping event. Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried are among the film’s cast making a return. All are portrayed as adults — some with burgeoning “mean girls” of their own.

From Patrick Bateman to Tyler Durden, Men’s Rights Activists, incels, and other misogynistic men have a tendency to idolize fictional characters that are meant to be cautionary tales. David Fincher — who brought Durden to the big screen with Fight Club — is as baffled by it as you and me.
Starring Edward Norton as the disaffected Narrator and Brad Pitt as Durden, Fight Club — Fincher’s 1999 adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel of the same name — tackled the same middle class ennui as Office Space, but took its characters’ frustrations to much more violent ends. Premiering on Sept. 9, 2001, World War II miniseries Band of Brothers is one of the most impressive shows in HBO‘s already-impressive TV canon. Based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1992 non-fiction book of the same name and produced by cinematic titans Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, Band of Brothers offers an unflinching look at the horrors of war and the American heroes of Easy Company that would endure them to help bring down the Third Reich.
The 10 episodes presented in the show’s sole season are pitch-perfect television and now they’re about to be made available to an even wider audience. Alongside its spiritual cousin The Pacific (which follows the Pacific Theater of WWII), Band of Brothers is available to stream on Netflix as of Sept. 15. In a slight change of pace from my recent viewing pleasures I decided to check out Office Race. A movie that by all accounts was to be a laugh-out-loud comedy about a work-shy losers quest to train for a marathon and beat his asshole boss.

Not a lot was expected of Richard Linklater’s 23rd film, “Hit Man,” before it premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, September 5. For one, it was coming at the end of a mini trend of films studying contract killers (or those who impersonate them). First came David Fincher’s “The Killer.” There was also Woody Allen’s “Coup de Chance,” which has a murder-for-hire as a central plotline. “Hit Man” came relatively late to the game, but in the process may have snatched the thunder out from under the other two in terms of audience response and early critical buzz that’s heaping praise on the acclaimed director of “Boyhood,” “School of Rock,” “Apollo 10 1/2,” “Before Sunset” and “Before Midnight.”
The indie action comedy “Hit Man” stars Glen Powell, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Linklater. The story is very loosely based on a 2001 Texas Monthly article...

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
All it took was an email to get 20th Century Studios interested in greenlighting Dan Trachtenberg’s “Prey,” the film that (per Hulu) became the streamer’s biggest premiere ever and is currently nominated for six Emmys, including Outstanding Television Movie.
“I was thinking a lot about a few things at once,” Trachtenberg said to IndieWire over Zoom, as he prepared to give a step-by-step breakdown of how the “Prey” pitch came together. “On the one hand, I was thinking about period and sci-fi — wanting to make a movie that combined those two ingredients that we don’t often see combined — and survival stories, and making a movie that could primarily be told through action with little to no dialogue.

And just like that, Sex and the City fans finally laid eyes on the woman Aidan Shaw married. Kathy, Aidan’s ex-wife, appeared for the first time in “There Goes the Neighborhood,” the most recent episode of the iconic series’ reboot. While Kathy is brand new to the series, the actor who played her has an interesting connection to the original Sex and the City. Rosemarie DeWitt portrayed Kathy. The actor, best known for her work in La La Land and The Staircase, is married to one of Carrie Bradshaw’s failed love interests.

This year marks 30 years since Bob Byington’s first feature, though it’s only during the last 15 of those — since SXSW midnight-movie breakout “Rso: Registered Sex Offender” — that the Austin-based director has enjoyed “indie darling” status. During that same stretch, the cultural discourse has changed a great deal, while Byington’s voice remains remarkably (if somewhat frustratingly) consistent, churning out self-deprecating feature-length sitcoms about flaccid man-babies. Those aren’t the kind of movies American festivals are looking for so much anymore, which could explain why his latest, “Lousy Carter,” wound up premiering abroad, at the Locarno Film Festival.
Locarno’s programmers typically gravitate toward austere, experimental and/or formally audacious works of cinema. “Lousy Carter” is none of these things, but neither is it lousy. That unfortunate moniker belongs to the film’s lead character, a lumpy failed animator turned tenured literature professor, who’s rendered all the more pathetic...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
The purpose of this column has always been to highlight anime that newcomers could jump into without prior knowledge of the medium, shows that hopefully act as a gateway to a medium full of incredible possibilities. Recently, I've been trying to avoid brand-new shows, and instead focus on shining a light on older classics and relatively more modern but still underseen anime — basically, shows that you don't hear about trending on social media.
That being said, a brand new show comes along sometimes and surpasses anticipations and expectations to deliver a viewing experience so unique and thrilling I am left with no choice but to immediately write about it in the hopes that everyone catches up before the season ends. That is the case with this month's anime: "Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead.

When Freeform's new animated series Praise Petey premieres this Friday, you won't recognize any of the faces, but you'll certainly recognize the supersized talent behind them.
Prolific actor Stephen Root is among the actors who will use their voices to bring a wide array of characters to life in the new series by creator, writer, and executive producer Anna Drezen, a former head writer on Saturday Night Live.
We had the chance to chat with Root during a recent press day, and the pleasure was all ours. The interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
There's no doubt that you are familiar with many of Root's roles over the years.
He's incredibly talented, and his acting chops tear apart roles in both comedies and dramas, but he leans heavily into the former, even when taking a dramatic turn.

Lionsgate gave director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening a theatrical release on June 16th, with a Premium VOD release following last Friday, July 7th. Now they have announced that a digital release is coming down the line on August 15th, with the 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release following on August 22nd. "They don't care about you! You're a number in a column on a spreadsheet...!" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for an indie film called Corner Office, a workplace comedy in the same vein as Office Space and "Severance" with a few tricks up its sleeves. There's been many of these corporate-work-sucks series recently, such as "The Consultant" and "Glamorous" and "WeCrashed" and "Industry", along with all the classics like "The Office". This premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival, and played at the Raindance & Fort Lauderdale Film Fests. In this office satire, Jon Hamm plays Orson, a straight-laced employee at a big, generic corporation who discovers a blissfully empty corner office to get away from his colleagues. But why does this seem to upset them so much? What is really going on? Starring Danny Pudi, Christopher Heyerdahl, Allison Riley, Shawn Macdonald, and Sarah Gadon. That is one magnificent mustache on Hamm,...

This post contains spoilers for the series finale of "Barry." If you haven't watched yet, consider yourself warned.
If you haven't recognized Stephen Root throughout his illustrious career as a character actor, then you haven't been paying attention. From his iconic role as the put-upon office worker Milton in "Office Space" and appearing in Coen films like "No Country for Old Men" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" to playing the blustery owner of a radio station on the cult NBC comedy "NewsRadio," Root's career not only spans decades and genres, but he's worked with some of the finest filmmakers around. And he's just now fresh off wrapping his role as Monroe Fuches on the remarkable HBO comedy/thriller "Barry," which concluded its fourth and final season tonight with an episode simply entitled "wow." Fuches' arc wraps up here as well, in ways that are both surprising and inevitable for...

This post contains mild spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
Over the course of his lengthy and varied career, Stephen Root has proven himself to be a consummate character actor; not just someone reliable and hard-working, but a true chameleon, darting in and out of disparate genres and roles.
As a result, it's incredibly difficult to choose a definitive Root character — there are some he's more famous for, like his creepy predator in "Get Out" or his eccentric billionaire in "Newsradio." Yet there are numerous other appearances of his that are just as beloved if not more so.
Throughout his resume, however, one doesn't see too many sexy, virile, crime lord assassin characters. That's all changed thanks to "Barry" and the series star, Bill Hader, who in this fourth and final season of the show has transformed Root's Monroe Fuches into the mysterious, intimidating, and — yes — sexy jailbird, the Raven.

I don’t know if anything is more soothing than Owen Wilson smiling while sporting a mighty blonde afro. With light twinkling in his eyes, Wilson stares into the distance, surrounded by happy little trees for IFC Films‘ new Paint poster. It’s moments like this when I’m thankful Wilson is experiencing a resurgence in cinema. Between starring in Marvel’s Loki and Disney’s Haunted Mansion and becoming powered up for the underrated Secret Headquarters family film, Wilson is in a good place.

IFC has dropped the trailer and art for its upcoming comedy “Paint,” and leading man Owen Wilson goes full-on Bob Ross mode in it.
The film stars Wilson as Carl Nagyl, Vermont’s top TV painter who has everything going for him, from a fanbase to a van and even a perm, until a younger artist takes his spotlight. Nagyl is reminiscent of beloved TV icon Bob Ross, who led PBS’ instructional TV program “The Joy of Painting” from 1983 to 1994. He passed away in 1995 at 52 years old.
Wilson leads the film, having been previously featured in “Zoolander,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Bottle Rocket,” “Loki” and “The French Dispatch.” The actor also has the upcoming film “Haunted Mansion” on his docket with Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto and Winona Ryder.
Joining the Oscar-nominated star, the “Paint” cast includes Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renée, Lusia Strus, Stephen Root and newcomer Lucy Freyer.

San Francisco, Jan 8 (Ians) A former software engineer of the US-based e-commerce website Zulily, has been charged with stealing over 3,00,000 from the site after allegedly being inspired by the 1999 film ‘Office Space’.
A police report alleges that Ermenildo Valdez Castro (28) manipulated Zulily’s prices and altered its code to divert shipping fees to his personal account, stealing about 2,60,000 in electronic payments and more than 40,000 in merchandise, reports The New York Times.
He was charged on December 20 with two counts of theft and one count of identity theft and is scheduled to be summoned on January 26 in court.
The police report further mentioned that a document discovered on Castro’s work laptop referred to the scheme as the ‘OfficeSpace project’.

"The Simpsons" is noteworthy for a number of reasons, not least because it's seemingly been on the air since pretty much the dawn of time. One of the things that the long-running animated sitcom has become most known for, of course, is collecting an incredible and eclectic stable of celebrity guest stars, including the likes of Albert Brooks, Patrick Stewart, Mel Brooks, and John Waters.
As part of Fox's Sunday night lineup for years, it was always inevitable that "King of the Hill" would not only draw comparisons to Matt Groening's show, but also face the pressure to duplicate its success both in terms of ratings and when it comes to bringing in celebrities to lend their voices to the fictional world of Arlen, Texas.

A Washington state software engineer stole more than 300,000 from the company he worked for in a scheme inspired by the film “Office Space.”
Ermenildo “Ernie” Castro was charged last week with first-degree theft and first-degree identity theft for manipulating programming code, allowing him to change prices and steal shipping fees charged to customers of the e-commerce company Zulily.
Police discovered a file on his work computer titled “Office Space Project” that laid out the scheme. According to court documents, he later admitted to drawing inspiration from the film.
Castro launched the scheme in February 2022 by installing “three types of malicious code in the checkout process,” police detectives stated. He made further modifications in March and April once other employees picked up on discrepancies between the amount customers were billed and charges to their credit cards. Over a five-month period, Castro interfered with more than 30,000 transactions.

Despite his massive popularity from "Beavis and Butt-Head," "King of the Hill," "Office Space," and the disturbingly relevant "Idiocracy," the Mike Judge comedy flick "Extract" doesn't get talked about as much as it deserves. Written and directed by Judge, "Extract" is the story of Joel Reynold (Jason Bateman), the owner of a factory that specializes in the production of flavor extracts. On the surface, Joel seems to have a perfect life, but in reality, it's all a facade.
Joel's wife Suzie (Kristen Wiig) hasn't desired him sexually in quite some time, and rather than actually talk about their problems or see a sex therapist, Joel hatches up a ridiculous plan to get her to cheat on him, thereby removing any guilt he might have about starting an affair with his employee, Cindy (Mila Kunis). Of course, since this is a Mike Judge film, there's always an added level of ridiculousness,...

The new year is upon us and Amazon Prime Video is kicking things off in grand fashion. Not only are they debuting the third season of their Tom Clancy adaptation “Jack Ryan,” they’re also debuting the final season of the ambitious, Al Pacino-starring actioner “Hunters.”
Initially debuting to the service in February of 2020, right as the pandemic started, the series’ first season follows a ragtag group of Nazi hunters in 1977 New York City. The so-called Hunters discover that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living in the United States and are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in America. The Nazi hunters, led by Pacino, will embark on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their genocidal plans. The series concluded in 2020 and has taken some time to get back to screens. Unfortunately, this second season will be a finale as well so fans...

Insomniacs of the MTV Generation will have no trouble remembering the network’s late-night animated anthology show Liquid Television. Home to various animated shorts, Stick Figure Theater, Dog-Boy, and the antics of Office Space‘s Milton Waddams, the Heavy Metal-like series also featured Aeon Flux, a sexy science-fiction story with a radical approach to action and intrigue. In 2005, Paramount Pictures pooped out a dreadful adaptation of Aeon Flux starring Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand, Marton Csokas, Johnny Lee Miller, and more. Directed by Karyn Kusama, the movie was panned by critics, flopped at the box office, and Theron knew the project was doomed to fail before it hit theaters.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron waxed rhapsodic about how appearing on Arrested Development helped save her career after starring in Aeon Flux. “It was one of the scariest things, to walk onto a set of a show that’s so developed and so brilliant.
