I've just encountered my first cartoon that starred Scrappy, a mischievous little kid created for the Charles Mintz unit at Columbia. In this one, it's a very nice day. "Wish there was something to do!" says the main character. So does a friend next to him. So Scrappy and he decide to ring doorbells. They ring so much they get stuck in a house and get challenged by an old man to "ring the right one" in order to get out. Plenty of amusing gags such as when Scrappy and his friend hang on a large man's suspenders ringing constantly as they go up and down. There's a brief blackface gag when stuck in the house that has Scrappy saying "Mammy!" that may make one cringe today though obviously no harm was meant there. And then there's a surreal movement of hall walls as Scrappy and his friend keep running. All those make this one of those rare cartoons worth seeking out for anyone interested in animation from the '30s. I highly recommend Let's Ring Doorbells.
