Charming (and more than a touch odd) little short produced by Columbia
llltdesq1 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This rather unusual little cartoon featured two rather strange men and, from what I gather, there were hopes that the short would be successful enough to turn into a regular series, but I don't think that happened. Because I will be discussing some details, this is your spoiler warning:

The two lead characters are Professor Small and Mr. Tall, a Mutt and Jeff team, with Small being the tall one and Tall being the small one (there's a notable confusion based on this quirky situation about midway through the short). Professor Small is a scholarly skeptic and Mr. Tall is an affable, more easygoing sort. They work on a train.

Tall finds a horseshoe, which he proclaims to be good luck. Small contemptuously tosses it to one side, thereby breaking a mirror and starting a run of bad luck.

First, they wreck the train and wind up underwater (watch out for a cute bit with a fish and a banana). Then they find themselves on a handcar, when they roll into a ghost town (complete with a ghost who sounds a lot like Ed Wynn). After their run-in with him, they wind up in the desert.

Throughout their "adventures", Tall keeps trying to glue the mirror back together, with Small ridiculing his efforts. In the desert, after a well turns out to be a mirage, Small finally puts the mirror back together and their luck changes-a cloud forms overhead and deluges them with water (and money) and they're picked up by a limo with two girls in the back. As they ride off, Tall mentions the mirror and Small grabs it and tosses out of the car, shattering it (again). Everything, of course, vanishes.

The closing shot has both men working to put the mirror back together, with Small still holding forth on how silly superstition is-as he glues pieces together! Enjoyable short, well worth seeing. Recommended.

A Strange but Charming Short from Columbia Pictures
Kalashnikovin9 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Columbia Pictures (probably due to the success of other animation studios such as Disney and Fleischer Studios) decided to make cartoons since the mid-30s, there are several memorable ones, this unknown but charming short shows us Ignorance in a Surrealistic Way, and wow, the portrays very well.

The Cartoon revolves around Small and Tall, 2 People who work on a Train and have characteristics worthy of a Tex Avery character, one is Big but quite Egocentric, the Other is an Intelligent but at the same time stupid who is always persevering , the Magic occurs when Small throws a Horseshoe to a Mirror, but for the same reason a great curse falls on them giving them bad luck.

The Adventures of the Duo continue in the Sea and then they try to find an accommodation but end up finding an empty house, then a car from which a ghost comes out takes them to a Hotel that is literally 3 steps away from there and begins to interrogate them while the duo just try to rest.

After a Hitler Gag that Ironically ends in his suicide (predicting reality) the duo falls off a cliff and believing they find water they give up, Tall manages to repair the mirror so the Sandy and Horrible desert becomes a Nice Field where it rains Money and a Car with Beautiful girls picks them up, Small throws the Mirror since according to him it is "Unnecessary" but when it breaks bad luck returns...

After that the Duo is seen repairing the Mirror while Small talks about how Stupid Superstition is.

A Laughable and Quite Absurd, Surrealistic, Strange, Dumb, Bizarre and Not Linear Plot that results in good Gags and a good cartoon that shows us that Ignorance is Bad and we must always work as a team.

The Animation has a Simplistic Style typical of Columbia Pictures which is reflected in simple backgrounds and poorly worked character designs, luckily the animation is not as simplistic as this Company would do in the late 40s, here the Animation although simple, is Charming and has a nice visual style.

The Music is ok, it's not the Coolest and Funnest thing out there but it's certainly nice and entertaining.

An unknown but quite memorable Short from Columbia, It has good Characters, a plot although strange, well managed, It has good gags and although with a simple animation, it has a great artistic and musical charm, it has good plot management and the ending leaves you more than satisfied.

In itself, Professor Tall and Mr Small is a good short that fulfills its objective, to be funny and entertaining, it shows animated Surrealism at its best and I recommend you watch it at least once.

For everything I said above, this Cartoon gets an 8.
