In 1959, New York Times critic Brooks Atkinson heralded the arrival of a new musical comedy star in Once Upon a Mattress, a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Princess and the Pea.” Carol Burnett, he wrote, has “a metallic voice, an ironic gleam, and an unfailing sense of the comic gesture” as she “discharges” the music “as though she were firing a field mortar.” Meanwhile, her co-star, Joe Bova, as Prince Dauntless the Drab, only received mention from Atkinson as one of several “winning young people” backing up Burnett.
Dauntless has always seemed a supporting part, inevitably overshadowed by Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, one of musical theater’s most boisterous, irrepressible heroines. But Michael Urie, playing Dauntless in the new Broadway revival of Once Upon a Mattress, a transfer of the Encores! production that opened in January for a two-week run at New York City Center, reveals that this...

Carol Burnett is unstoppable. The coolest 91-year-old in show biz, Burnett is a contender for her 25th Emmy nomination for her role as Norma Dellacorte, the powerful maven of Palm Beach society who knows where all the bodies are buried and is not above a little blackmail in Apple TV +’s “Palm Royale.” She won her first Emmy in 1962 for her work on CBS’ “The Garry Moore Show” and her 25th last year for NBC’s “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.” And her beloved CBS 1967-78 comedy variety series “The Carol Burnett Show’” won 25 Emmys.
But did you know Burnett was a Broadway baby? She made her debut as the “Shy” Princess Winnifred on the Great White Way in 1959 in the musical comedy “Once Upon a Mattress” for which she was nominated for a Tony and received a Theatre World honor. She also reprised her role in...

Michael Urie will reprise his Off Broadway performance opposite Sutton Foster in the upcoming Broadway summer transfer of Once Upon A Mattress, the Mary Rodgers musical newly adapted by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
Urie and Foster will continue their roles when the Broadway production moves to Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theatre in December.
As he did in the recent New York City Center’s Encores! production, Urie will play the good-hearted Prince Dauntless, who becomes smitten with the free-spirited commoner Winnifred (Foster), much to the chagrin of his not-so-nice queen mother.
Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
Directed by Lear deBessonet (Into The Woods), Once Upon A Mattress begins previews Wednesday, July 31, at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre, opening Monday, August 12, and running through November 30. The production begins its four-week L.A. engagement at Center Theatre Group’s Ahmanson Theatre on December 10, ending its run January 5.

FX has ordered a mini-series produced by Danny Boyle about Norwegian fighters in WWII who sabotaged the Nazi’s nuclear program. My military-history enthusiast husband has already programmed the DVR to record it.
Here’s more reason to look forward to the return of Switched at Birth. Max Adler and Sandra Bernhard are set to take on recurring roles. They’ll both encounter Bay as she takes a college art class — Bernhard will play the “groovy” professor while Adler will be a classmate.
That’s not all the good ABC Family news. The channel has handed out an early second-season renewal for The Fosters, which has just finished filming the back half of its first season.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Meg Ryan is going to star in a comedy for NBC about a single mom who returns to work as an editor, where she ends up working for her former intern.

This week sees the release of Bryan Singer's "Jack the Giant Slayer," which has survived a long delay, conversion to 3-D, and a retitling (Jack was originally a "Giant Killer"), but now must face its biggest trial by fire: The Audience.
The rather old-fashioned children's adventure feel of "Jack" is going to feel rather old-hat in comparison to the flurry of fairy tale films that film-goers have been bludgeoned with in recent years, mostly because it doesn't offer much of an ironic or modernized spin on the fable.
Maybe that's a good thing?
Let's take a look back at some past films that really took our childhood favorites in edgier, sexier directions.
'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' (2013)
What They Changed: Well, it's not so much what they changed but what they extrapolated on. After the title brother and sister have their famous encounter at the gingerbread house,...

In an interview with EW, Jane Lynch revealed that she gets cast in a lot of roles that were originally scripted for men. Lynch said, “I have numerous roles that I’ve played that were originally written for men. The first role I ever had was playing a king in The Princess and the Pea story. My character in 40-Year-Old Virgin originally was a man. I’ve played tons of doctors and teachers and lawyers on guest spots on sitcoms that were originally conceived for men, that my agent was smart enough to say, 'Do you see a woman in this role?' That’s happened to me a lot.

After four seasons as Sue Sylvester on Glee, Jane Lynch has gone from sitcom guest-star extraordinaire and comic dynamite in films like Best in Show and The 40-Year-Old Virgin to one of television’s most recognizable and celebrated actors, hosting the Emmys and Saturday Night Live. But way back when, she paid the bills with her clipped Midwestern voice, in numerous commercials and animated cartoons. “I made my living doing voiceovers, and getting an animated film was always the brass ring of being a celebrity,” says Lynch. “So now I’m just really grateful that I’m a celebrity and I get to do it.

Glee star Jane Lynch ditches her Sue Sylvester tracksuit for a voice role in the entertaining new Disney animation, Wreck-It Ralph. The movie is an arcade-hopping adventure about an 8-bit video game character called Ralph, who is bored of being the bad guy. Jane voices Sergeant Calhoun, a military woman with killer curves and kick-ass one-liners from an alien shoot-'em-up game. We caught up with the acclaimed actress to find out more...
How does it feel to be part of an iconic new Disney animation?
"The reality of that statement is slowly dawning on me. This will be on the same shelf as The Aristocats, Jungle Book and Cinderella. That's pretty amazing! I'm over the moon about it. I love Disney, so I'm really, really happy to be involved."
What goes through your mind when you hear your voice come out of an animated character like Sergeant Calhoun?
"It's mind blowing.

The Once Upon a Time Round Table is excited to welcome a special guest this week: Molly Harper, the author behind such supernaturally fun novels as "Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs" and "The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf."
We recommend both these novels, and also recommend you keep reading to see what Molly, Jim Garner, Christine Orlando and Nick McHatton have to say about "True North," the latest installment of our favorite Sunday night series...

Does it bother you that the show seems to be burning through fairy tale characters rather quickly? Do you think it is writing itself into a corner?
Jim: I guess it depends on which fairy tale characters they use. While they have started with the classics, I'm pretty sure that the brothers Grimm wrote dozens and dozens of fairy tales that could be used. While not a corner, it could be drifting into obscure...

[1] Now that the story of Snow White has been picked clean by three [2] different [3] movie [4] projects, Hollywood's got its sights on another fairy tale: Cinderella. Last year, Disney bought [5] a pitch for a live-action retelling, to be directed by Mark Romanek from a script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). Now we're getting news about a competing project from Universal, one of the players in the great Snow White movie race of 2011. Ann Peacock (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) has been tapped to write a screenplay based on the classic story, with Bruno Aveillan set to helm. Read more after the jump. Peacock is in final talks to rewrite the script, an earlier draft of which was penned by Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat). The film will mark the feature film debut for Aveillan, whose previous work has been mostly in commercials.

I have endeavored to see as many films as my mind and body could handle. This has meant attending late screenings which finish just before the last train leaves for Antibes (the neighbouring town I am now staying in) followed by early screenings which start at 8.30 every day and require me to get a train at around 7.30. All I can say is, Je suis fatigue.
Yes the tiredness set in and I admit there was the odd snooze during a couple of the less exciting films I’ve seen. And there was one walk out, I swore I wouldn’t and lasted for most of the film but in the end couldn’t bare it any longer and stormed out, accidently smacking some poor old critic in front of me in the back of the head with my bag as I left.
