It’s been just over 25 years since the release of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, the movie that continued the adventures of Mike Myers’ cryogenically-frozen ‘60s superspy, while doing its part for the environmental movement by recycling 70 to 80 percent of the jokes from the first movie.
One of the more welcome additions to The Spy Who Shagged Me was Rob Lowe, who stepped in to play the younger version of Dr. Evil’s number two in command: Number 2.
When Lowe sat down for a recent interview with Rich Eisen, naturally his work in the Austin Powers sequel came up, and Lowe was surprisingly poetic when describing the process of working with one of cinema’s most revolting characters. Lowe told Eisen that showing up for work at the Spy Who Shagged Me set was the “polar opposite” of acting in another classic ‘90s comedy, Tommy Boy. While the...

When it comes to physical transformations, nailing accents, and memorable performances in the comedic genre, few can claim to be as versatile as Mike Myers. The Canadian star’s portrayal of the titular spy in the satirical film series Austin Powers, is a case in point. The actor also gave life to one of the most loved animated characters, Shrek.
Mike Myers as Shrek (image credit: DreamWorks Pictures)
Myers’ rendition of the loveable ogre was enhanced multifold by the distinctive Scottish accent that he delivered perfectly to bring out the nuances of the character. What audiences may not have realized though, is that the celebrity had a very specific reason for using this dialect for the protagonist that went beyond the superficial elements of the role.

"Austin Powers" is arguably one of the most beloved comedy movie franchises in history. Beginning with "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" in 1997, Mike Myers helped craft a James Bond spoof that came at just the right time, with "GoldenEye" reviving 007 to kick off Pierce Brosnan's tenure with the character. For as much as the movie is remembered, it actually didn't top the box office when it opened -- the film lost out to an oft-forgotten Kurt Russell thriller.
Directed by Jonathan Mostow, "Breakdown" centers on a married couple Jeff (Kurt Russell) and Amy Taylor (Kathleen Quinlan) who run into some car trouble as they're driving across the country. A passing truck driver offers to help, and that's where things go wrong; Amy goes missing, leading Jeff on a chase to find her. Remember Space Jam: Legacy? You probably don’t. It was an ill-advised sequel to 1996’s commercial trash art classic, Space Jam. In the original film, global icon Michael Jordan is sucked into a cartoon world where he must assemble a team of Looney Tunes to play an intergalactic game of basketball against a squad of goons to save the universe. Legacy saw the same plot revisited, subbing in LeBron James for Mj, except being released in 2021, merely showcasing the Looney Tunes would not suffice.

The first time Donna Langley came to the Cannes Film Festival she was a junior executive working on 1999’s “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”
“I had just been promoted and I was fortunate enough to get picked to come on this trip to be part of the support team, and it was great! It was very different to this experience, I will say,” Langley said, eliciting a laugh from the well-heeled crowd at the Kering Women in Motion dinner, held at the Place de la Castre high above the Croisette. “[But] we had the time of our lives. We were just in so much awe to be in the cinema capital of the world.”

Kristen Johnston will star alongside Leanne Morgan in the latter’s upcoming Netflix comedy series, Variety has learned.
The untitled multi-cam comedy was picked up at Netflix in April with a 16-episode order. Morgan co-created the series with Susan McMartin and Chuck Lorre. The role marks a reunion for Lorre and Johnston, as Johnston previously appeared in the CBS multi-cam “Mom,” which Lorre also co-created.
The official description for Morgan’s series states: “Leanne’s life takes an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity and jello salad.”
Johnston will star in the series regular role of Carol, Leanne’s sister. The character is said to be Leanne’s complete opposite.

After the massive success of the "Wayne's World" movies, studios were eager to capitalize on the popularity of "Saturday Night Live" cast member Mike Myers and his ability to create truly memorable characters. While womanizing James Bond spoof that is Austin Powers wasn't something Myers brought to "SNL" like the "Wayne's World" sketches, the shagadelic spoy blew up in pop culture pretty quickly.
"Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" made him a household name in 1997, complete with a massive marketing campaign and merchandise ranging from Austin Powers Halloween costumes to vintage tin lunchboxes. For a few short years, it seemed like Hollywood got swept up in Powers-mania, as two sequels were released in fairly quick succession. But after "Austin Powers in Goldmember" in 2002, the character pretty much disappeared from the pop culture consciousness. Firefighters continue to battle a stubborn fire at a hangar at the former Tustin Air Base today where many film and TV series have been shot.
Fire crews responded after 1:30 a.m. and found massive flames ripping through the roof of the wooden building, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. Pieces of the roof were seen slowly falling to the ground as the fire continued to burn.

Watch out, Jigsaw — “Terrifier 3” is arriving next year just in time for the holidays.
Which holiday, you ask? Well, Oct. 25, 2024, makes “Terrifier 3” a Halloween treat, so while the film takes place over Christmas, a “The Nightmare Before Christmas”-esque holiday crossover is in store.
Regardless, Art the Clown will return, courtesy of Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting, and unleash yet more unrated carnage on the unsuspecting townsfolk of Miles County on Christmas Eve.
The latest Damien Leone-directed installment will open two years after “Terrifier 2” took theaters by storm. The family-unfriendly slasher, filled with ultraviolence and running a whopping 138 minutes, played in wide theatrical release, legging out for a month after an $805,000 opening weekend (in 770 theaters) toward an $11 million domestic cumulative. Its weekend performance would peak over Halloween weekend with $1.9 million in 1,550 theaters.
That was a higher total than the 2022 Oscar season likes of “Tar,” “She Said” and “The Banshees of Inisherin.

Do you remember your first horror movie? I do. I can remember how petrified I was like it was yesterday.
And I’ll never come close to a TV set broadcasting ants racing, thanks to Poltergeist. I’m still too terrified of being sucked in.
My little brother was terrified of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and would cry whenever his name was mentioned. And my son turned sheet white when he first saw Vanessa rip her face off in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
The point is that we’ve all been scared by something on TV or in theaters. Although, some of us seem to enjoy it more than others.

Over the years there have been many successful films that never quite hit the top of the mountain in terms of box office success. Some had the misfortune of opening at the same time as Avatar (Sherlock Holmes) while others simply maintained healthy week to week grosses while other movies came and went. In a world where a movie can generally sink or swim based on its opening weekend, we wanted to know what movie that never reached number one on the box office charts is your favorite. If you don’t see your favorite listed, please hit the “other” button and tell us in the comments.

Sony Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is off and swinging at the box office, grossing a massive $17.4 million from 3,500 theaters.
That total is well above the $3.5 million that this sequel’s 2018 Oscar-winning predecessor “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” earned from Thursday previews en route to a mid-December $35 million opening. “Across the Spider-Verse” was projected to earn more than double that with tracking at an $80 million-plus launch, with rival distributors projecting an opening of over $90 million.
With this sky-high preview result, the second-biggest ever for an animated film behind “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million toward a $183 million opening weekend) in 2018, Sony should be looking at a $100 million-plus opening, possibly above $125 million considering the strong reviews, likely-to-be-strong buzz and goodwill from the previous Mile Morales flick.
Yes, it’s an unusually long animated film, running 140 minutes, but extended runtimes aren’t generally an issue for films like “Avengers: Endgame,” “Avatar: The Way of Water...

Lionsgate has officially noted that the four “John Wick” films have topped $1 billion at the global box office. Its new cume, $1.011 billion in all, comes from a combined production budget of just $245 million, for a 4.12 times rate of return just through theatrical revenue. That total gross includes $87.8 million for “John Wick” in 2014, $171.5 million for “John Wick: Chapter 2” in 2017 (plus 97% from “John Wick”), $326.7 million for “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” in 2019 (plus 90%) and a running total of $425.3 million for “John Wick: Chapter 4” (plus 30%) which opened in late March of this year.

Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.
Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.
Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.
On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.

Former Cincinnati mayor and long-time television host, Jerry Springer, has died at 79 following a “brief illness,” at his Chicago home on Thursday morning. Springer’s long-time friend and rabbi confirmed his “sudden” illness to have been pancreatic cancer.
“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” Jene Galvin, a family friend and executive producer of Springer’s podcast, said in a statement. “He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humor will live on.”

One of the biggest pop culture staples of the late 90s was The Jerry Springer Show. It brought forth the popularity of guilty pleasure, trash television as outrageous guests talk without filters, argue with the audience and each other, and eventually get into fist fights. The show itself made cameo appearances in other mediums, like a segment in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me where Dr. Evil returns and eventually gets into a fight with another guest. Chances are, you probably chanted his name at one point, following suit as the audience cheer him on as the shit hits the fan on his show.
Variety now reports that the famed host has passed at the age of 79. Springer started as a former Cincinnati news anchor and mayor before he found a place on daytime television. Springer is said to have died peacefully at his home in the Chicago suburbs on Thursday.

Penelope Spheeris' 1992 comedy "Wayne's World" argues that metalheads, often depicted in movies as violent, death-obsessed Satan worshipers, are actually just really kind, goofy guys. Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) are funny, approachable dudes who like hosting their own public access talk show, going to metal shows, and going to get donuts while listening to Queen cassettes. They speak their own lingo and dream of bigger things, just like everyone. Are they a little weird? You'd be surprised how normal they are.
Indeed, one of the recurring elements of "Wayne's World" is that Wayne has recently broken up with his girlfriend Stacy (Lara Flynn Boyle). Although two months have gone by and Wayne has made it very clear that they are no longer dating, Stacy still behaves like they're together. Stacy seems a little clueless, so the audience has to take Garth's word for it when she is described as a "psycho hose beast.

As far as 1990s dreamgirls go, Heather Graham was at the top of the list for many of us. An ageless beauty who looks the same as she did twenty-five years ago, Graham has one of the most interesting careers of the era. Having started as the love interest in the Corey Haim/Corey Feldman teen cult classic Licence to Drive, she quickly established her serious acting chops in 1989’s Drugstore Cowboy. The movie helped launch her as an indie “It girl,” with her landing memorable roles on Twin Peaks (and the Fire Walk With Me movie), Six Degrees of Separation and more. She had a unique role as the object of Jon Favreau’s affections in Swingers but then hit the big time with her iconic part as Rollergirl in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights.

Burt Bacharach, legendary composer, songwriter, and occasional singer, who was undoubtedly one of the most important composers and commanding music figures of the 20th century, passed away at 94.
Publicist Tina Brausam confirmed that the six-time Grammy and three-time Academy Award-winning musician passed away in his home in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday.

Bursting with romantic optimism, Bacharach’s work with frequent writing partner, lyricist Hal David, whom he met in 1956 while at the Brill Building in New York City, served as an alternative to rock and roll in the 1960s and 1970s and was regularly heard playing over the radio. When the sad news of Burt Bacharach’s death came down Thursday morning, your first memories of the songwriting genius likely depended on your age. If you grew up in the Sixties, you probably remember the hits he wrote with Hal David for artists like Gene Pitney, Dionne Warwick, and B.J. Thomas. Children of the Eighties are likely more familiar with Christoper Cross’ “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” Neil Diamond’s “Heartlight,” and the Dionne Warwick charity single “That’s What Friends Are For.”

Dr. Evil. Fembots. Mini-Me. You’re probably a fan of the Austin Powers movies if these names mean anything. The films were produced and written by Mike Myers, who also starred as the title character and Dr. Evil.
The franchise parodies numerous films and characters, including the James Bond series and Jason King. It also incorporates various other elements of popular culture, following a British spy’s quest to bring his nemesis down.
The movies are filled with humor, action, and references to pop culture, making them timeless classics. If you want to watch the Austin Powers movies in order, you’ve come to the right place. There are three Austin Powers Movies; the first film in the Austin Powers series was produced by Mike Myers, Demi Moore, Jennifer Todd, and Suzanne Todd. However, the last two Austin Powers films were also made by John S. Lyons and Eric McLeod.

It’s 1997 all over again, as the cast of “Austin Powers” has reunited for a new Super Bowl spot set to air during the Big Game on Sunday. Mike Myers reprises his iconic role from the comedy franchise in a commercial for Gm alongside Seth Green as Scott, Mindy Sterling as Frau Farbissina and Rob Lowe as the younger version of Number 2 from the 1999 sequel “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”.
The commercial finds Dr. Evil and Co. taking over General Motors, with a heavy emphasis on reducing carbon emissions. The ad brings back the death chair gag from the first film, as Dr. Evil considers killing his son as he continues to annoy him – only for Frau Farbissina to intervene. Scott, meanwhile, reveals that he has a baby, which Dr. Evil immediately dubs “Baby Me.”
It’s a fun callback to the comedy hit, which spawned two sequels...

Cheryl Boone Isaacs, former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, remembers Oscar winner Sidney Poitier as “a beautiful man, a creative individual, who gave a lot.”
Isaacs, who now serves as the founding director of the Sidney Poitier New American Film School at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, talked poignantly and openly with Variety after learning the news of his passing on Friday at the age of 94.
“Mr. Poitier’s light was very bright,” Isaacs says. “He probably wasn’t aware of it, because most people with a lot of light are not because they’re busy being who they are.”
Poitier was the first Black man to be nominated for best actor for his performance in “The Defiant Ones” (1958), later becoming the first to win best actor for “Lilies of the Field” (1963). Recalling the night of his historic win,...

The New Shepard spacecraft carrying Jeff Bezos and three other passengers successfully completed its space flight Tuesday morning. It was a brief journey, but an exciting one, drawing 600,000 viewers to the live stream on YouTube.
But, watching the launch and getting a clear look at the rocket that would get Bezos and his team there, some people could only think of one thing: Austin Powers. Or rather, one very specific scene from “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”.
So, I watched the Blue Origin launch and I swear all I saw was Dr Evil's rocket...
