Directed by B. Unnikrishnan who is known for ‘loud’ and expensive films, the two are returning after 12 years and for just the second time. Unnikrishnan is popularly known for directing superstar Mohanlal.

The works of Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan has often been labeled “slow cinema”, and thus have often been mentioned with the filmography of directors such as Lav Diaz or Bela Tarr. However, as we often see with the features of these filmmakers, the term is often confusing, derogatory even, as it attempts to focus solely on aspects like duration, but not the contextual reason why these stories need to be told in that particular pace. Perhaps one of the best examples for Ceylan’s brand of “slow cinema” (if you really want to use that word) is his first feature “Kasaba” from 1997 which takes its time dealing with the story of a family living in a small rural town, with their struggles and conflicts in many ways reflecting the view on Turkish society, most specifically its problematic view on the past and its link to the present.

In her letter, Vidhu had said that she had sent Parvathy the script of Stand Up but that the actor did not respond to her despite the intervention of director Anjali Menon and others. This was one of the examples for the 'double standards' of the Wcc that Vidhu had cited. However, in her statement published on her Facebook page, Parvathy has refuted Vidhu's allegations. Stating that she was "disturbed" that she had to do this, Parvathy said that she was required to provide a public clarification to Vidhu since the latter had made her allegations publicly. "In...

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up: the film that is currently the bookies' favorite for festival gold: Nuri Bilge Ceylan's "Winter Sleep." The director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkish, 55 years old). A photographer's filmmaker -- with a BSc in electrical engineering, to boot -- Ceylan has been hovering around the world cinema A-list for over a decade, though his expansive 2011 feature "Once Upon a Time.in Anatolia" plainly sealed his place there. Having developed an interest in film in his twenties, he made his first short, "Cocoon," in 1995; it played at Cannes. His debut feature,"Kasaba," followed two years later; "Winter Sleep" is his seventh.

Minimalist art filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan spent a long time crafting very personal and breathtakingly photographed tales. His work has never been big on plot, nor have they ever been anything other than glacially paced. Indeed, his general aesthetic isn't very welcoming to the impatient, though those willing to give their attention are always struck by something special. His black and white debut "The Town" is a real toughie, containing less of a story and more of a collection of moments -- but without the presence of a narrative, Ceylan is free to discover and exhibit universal beauty that isn't dependent on deep characters or drama. A "scene" in a classroom becomes magical when a feather floats into the room, with a few children continually blowing it to stay in the air. Let the tales be told elsewhere, because without being too pretentious, this was life he was capturing in its most undiluted form.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s 2002 film Distant (Uzak)- his third feature film (his first was 1997’s black and white The Small Town- Kasaba), is a significant step up from his good but flawed 1999 film Clouds Of May (Mayis Sikintisi). The earlier film had potential, but reeked of a small budget and improvised quality in the worst ways- plot holes and wooden acting from amateurs. That Clouds Of May succeeded on any level was a testament to Ceylan’s talent as a budding filmmaker. However, Distant is Ceylan’s arrival on the international scene as a great...
