Do you know what would make Disney+ so much better? Unedited versions of movies like Splash? No. Adding the missing Simpsons episodes? Nah. The answer is anime, namely Macross!
Yes, the legendary mecha series is coming to Disney’s streaming service! The news was posted on the series’ official website. Although a date for Macross‘s global launch hasn’t been announced, it appears it will happen this year.

“It has been decided that the ‘Macross’ series will be distributed in Japan and around the world in 2024 on the content brand ‘Star’ of Disney’s official video distribution service Disney+!“
However, American Disney+ subscribers will need to make some concessions. Not all of the eighteen Macross series will be available Stateside.
Two of the eighteen series will be locked down strictly for the Japanese audience:

In the third edition of our tribute to anime, we focused more on retro titles, in an effort to fill the catalogue of our reviews with titles from the 80s also. This does not mean, however, that we did not include newer series, with the relaunching of Legend of the Galactic Heroes being presented in all its 3-seasons glory. Here is a list with all the titles we wrote about this August.
1. 86 (2021) by Toshimasa Ishii
The series is split in two parts, with the aforementioned mission being the dichotomy. The first part features much action, but the focus is actually on context, with Toshimasa Ishii presenting a number of sociopolitical comments through a dialogue-heavy approach. Lena’s gradual disillusionment about what is happening with the 86 is quite shattering in that regard, with the exploitation of kids that are sent in the front lines being a direct accusation on fundamentalists, to say the least.

“Super Dimension Fortress Macross” created by Studio Nue, is another huge anime franchise from Japan, which has been popular since the first series aired in 1981. Also known as “Macross” and “Robotech” in its international version, it consists of four TV series, four movies, six OVAs, one light novel, and five manga series, all sponsored by Big West Advertising, in addition to 40 video games set in the Macross universe, two crossover games, and a wide variety of physical merchandise. Furthermore, it created one of the first anime idols Lynn Minmay, turning her voice actress Mari Iijima into an instant celebrity, and launching her musical career.

For a long time the Macross anime franchise couldn’t escape the shadow of Robotech, at least in America. Ever since Robotech utilized the first Macross series as part of its amalgamation of three shows in the ‘80s, it’s been difficult for Macross to make its own place in the United States. Due to complicated legal problems most of the franchise besides the original series wasn’t legally available in the U.S. for the past 20 years. This was a shame since the Macross franchise continued on from its original series with multiple sequels, films, manga, and more.
Now we’re finally getting it. After the agreement earlier this year between all parties involved with Macross and Robotech, the theatrical film Macross Plus is coming to US theaters on December 14th. The synopsis for the film, set in the same universe as the first Macross series, is below.

This prequel, 5-episode Ova to “The Super Dimension Fortress Macross” was released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Macross franchise.
The script takes place in 2008, a year after the original storyline, and revolves around two axes. The first one is the final battles between the U.N. Spacy and the Anti-Un forces and the second one occurs on the secluded island in the Pacific, named Mayan, where an alien spaceship crashed nine years ago. The main hero is Shin Kudo, a pilot for the U.N. forces, who crashed on the island after shot down by an enemy aircraft that can transform into a robot. While there, he becomes acquainted with a primitive civilization, where even electric power is absent, and meets two sisters, Sara and Mao Nome. The first one is the priestess of the island and is very skeptical of any kind of foreigners...

The day anime fans thought would never come is here.
Premiering in 1982, Super Dimension Fortress Macross was the start of a massive anime franchise that’s continued to this day with numerous sequels and films. While the first Macross series came to the west as the first part of the Robotech series (and was released uncut later on), most of those sequels and films haven’t been released outside of Japan due to varying legal disagreements between rights holders Big West Co. Ltd., Studio Nue, Inc. (who were both involved in the original creation of Macross) and Harmony Gold U.S.A. (who created Robotech.)
That all changes today.
An “expansive agreement” between Big West, Studio Nue, and Harmony Gold will allow immediate international distribution of “most Macross television sequels and films.” It also affirms Harmony Gold’s rights to the Robotech franchise. Going forward, Big West and Harmony Gold...

Imagine if you will… It’s a Tuesday night with nothing to do. There you are, sitting on your couch, flipping through channel after channel of mindless drivel. “Is there nothing Good on these days?!” you ask yourself. So in an act of desperation you flip your favorite VOD service on (or open your local video rental catalog) and marvel at the endless hours of entertainment. What to watch? Comedy, Drama? Television series? Feature Film? Who has the time play TV roulette?! Nobody, That’S Who! So in an act of kindness, I lay before you the ten best anime series of yesteryear (in no particular order) for you to burn your eyeballs with during those slow weekday nights! And let’s face it… If your already reading this, What Else would you be doing on a weekday night? Hmm?

Since you’re reading this on an internet somewhere you’re likely to have noticed that the current trend in trying to get us all to start paying for our media again is to make accessing it as easy as possible. Take Spotify: free at the point of use (if you can get an invite) with adverts interrupting your music to cover their revenue. You can have ad-free playing for just £9.99 a month. Now, you may have heard various e-whisperings about Spotify being up the revenue stream without a royalty paddle because no-one’s paying for it and indeed they only have 320,000 paying subscribers. That feels like a number that should be higher, especially when you learn they have around 7 million actual users. But that’s all as maybe. For the moment it still exists and my guess is that it’s not going anywhere. This is because Daniel Ek,...

Carl Macek was a pioneer in the field of anime, serving as producer and story editor for the popular Robotech series from the mid-1980s.
Macek was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 21, 1951. He worked at California State University Fullerton as a librarian of popular culture, and co-editor of 1979’s McGill’s Survey of the Cinema and Film Noir-An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style (1979). He also wrote the book The Art of Heavy Metal: Animation for the Eighties. He became involved with anime in 1985 when he revised and edited three separate Japanese anime series, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada, into a three-generation Robotech Wars storyline. The popular series was produced in 1985 by Harmony Gold in association with Tatsunoko Prod. Co., Ltd. Jason salutes Carl Macek, who died at the weekend. For he was the man that introduced him, and many others, to anime through Robotech...
I found out this morning that a pioneer in Japanese Animation passed away over the weekend. Carl Macek died on Saturday at the age of 59. Mr. Macek isn't a name many would recognize in the anime world, but if you live outside of Japan, he was very instrumental in introducing you to anime.
He is most famous (and sometimes hated) for his work on the series Robotech, which itself was a work created from three separate anime series: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeda. His task was hardly simple, as he needed to, essentially, take three separate and unrelated series, and create an arc between them, to enable the show to have a long enough run for syndication, at the same time localizing it.

With "The Losers" ready to hit theaters later this month, director Sylvain White has expressed his interest in helming an adaptation of the classic "Robotech" animated series.
"Well, ['Robotech' is] not a project that's greenlit," related White during an appearance at last weekend's WonderCon (via Sci-Fi Wire). "It's a great cult series. When it came out, I actually saw it in France, growing up. I saw it in French. It's a pretty amazing cartoon. And I'm hoping it's going to come to fruition."
"I read a draft that's really good," continued White. "I'm interested in doing it, but the project is not fast tracked or anything like that, so there's no official thing. There's no deal... They sent me a draft. I liked it. It's a work in progress."

DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.' The Losers opens in a few weeks, and its performance could make Sylvain White a much-sought-after action helmer. In the meantime, there has been inevitable speculation as to what his next project could be, and the most recent rumor connects White to Robotech, based on a seminal Japanese cartoon series.
Robotech, which first aired in North America in 1985, is actually an adaptation of three Japanese anime series; the most popular being arguably The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. That series — re-packaged as the First Robotech War or The Macross Saga — centered around a conflict between Earth and an alien race called the Zentradi. On these shores, Robotech helped usher in the popularity of mecha; that is, anime featuring giant robots, some of which are capable of transforming into vehicles.
Apparently, a film version of Robotech has been set up at Warner Brothers with erstwhile Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire producing.
