It’s time to catch up with some of the most interesting cinema-centric books of the last few months, and it’s a diverse list. There’s some Lego, some Nolan, some Star Wars (of course), and even some vintage Stan Brakhage. That’s range.
Off the Cliff: Making of Thelma & Louise by Becky Aikman (Penguin Press)
The career of Ridley Scott is full of peaks and valleys. One of the peaks was the release of Thelma & Louise in 1991. The cultural impact of this story of two female outlaws cannot be overstated, and Becky Aikman’s account of the making of the film helps explain why. Thelma & Louise involved a unique cast of characters, including stars Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, as well as a young hunk named Brad Pitt. But the most memorable figures here are Scott, who knew his career needed a change but could not originally see...

Giorgio Moroder is mounting a comeback. The music pioneer, who helped usher in the disco era by producing a string of monster hits for Donna Summer in the late 1970s, has announced the release of his first solo studio album in 30 years. Set to be released next spring by Sony International/RCA Records, the as-yet-untitled LP will feature collaborations with such current stars as Britney Spears, Sia, Charli Xcx, Kylie Minogue, Mikky Ekko, Foxes, Matthew Koma, and more to be announced soon. "Sony/RCA constitutes one of the most groundbreaking histories in the world," said Moroder in a statement. "As my new label, I believe my record will live up to their history, but more importantly, pave the way for the future! Sony from here to eternity." In advance of the new set, Moroder has unveiled "74 is the New 24," the album's dancefloor-ready first single that will surely become an anthem...

Two late, great performers come back to life on a new album compilation from Queen. Queen and Michael Jackson sing together on the song "There Must Be More to Life Than This," just one of three previously unreleased songs from Queen frontman Mercury on "Forever Queen," due on Nov. 11. Mercury's first solo hit "Love Kills" with Giorgio Moroder also gets an unheard ballad version on the set, as does unreleased "Let Me In Your Heart Again" from Queen's "The Works" sessions. The rest of the single and double-disc releases are "a definitive collection of Queen’s timeless love songs," cobbled together by surviving members Brian May and Roger Taylor. The tracklist is made up of "things that we have collected together that are representative of our growth rather than the big hits,” said May in a release. On the Jackson and Mercury song, streaming above: The Queen and Michael Jackson duet,...

For some, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love and romance, a chance to spend time with that special person in your life. For others, the very mention of the V word is enough to begin a downward descent into loneliness and self-loathing; made even worse by the film industry’s insistence on releasing sappy, poorly written/acted/shot/vomit-inducing lovefests designed to get as many hopeful Valentine’s into the cinema as possible.
Luckily, it’s not all hearts and roses in the world of cinema so here are 10 great anti-love movies for Valentine’s haters. Warning: after watching these films you may never want to love again.
10. Sid and Nancy (1986)

This designer behind Ed Hardy is back with a whole new line — and a whole new direction!
Fashion designer Christian Audigier, 54, is best known for his clothing line, Ed Hardy, that featured an array of skulls and roses with his popular slogan, “Love Kills Slowly,” which we often saw stretched across the chests of the Jersey Shore cast. While we thought the designer had taken a break from fashion he’s getting ready to mark his return with a whole new label, Lord Baltimore. While he officially launched the brand in May 2012, it wasn’t until One Direction members Niall Horan and Zayn Malik showed it off that we took notice.
The boy band was invited into Auidiger’s studio to show off the collection, and they sported it both on and off the stage. Could we expect to see a formal collaboration soon? While we have yet to hear...

Robyn Carlsson is a bit of a musical anomaly – emerging from the frankly amazing pop and music scene in the Scandinavian countries, Robyn has always straddled the fine line between mainstream and the little-known. She’s a driving major pop force with fans across the globe. This, therefore, is my attempt to relay my opinion that her seventh studio album and pet project ‘Body Talk’ is one of the strongest and most cohesive pieces of pop music – hell, music in general – and deserves to be recognised as such.
Robyn has often been considered one of the best popstars in the world – from humble beginnings as a recording artist for Swedish cartoons, she has risen to become the greatest secret popstar of the modern era. She’s simultaneously a massive success and not known very well in the mainstream music scene, despite her aptitude for penning and creating addictive and iconic pop songs.

Love kills, at least that’s what New York’s Japan Society tells us - with the announcement of their latest, upcoming film season; Love Will Tear Us Apart, and it set to be a doozie. The press release lists just some of the sights to see. Bad romance, blind love, amour fou! This spring, we screen a series of twisted, obsessive, heart-blazing love stories from Japan and Korea, because, after all, it takes two to tango and at least two to tumble. The 20+ film lineup, mostly from the past decade, includes the U.S. premiere of Shinya Tsukamoto's latest film, Kotoko, and the world premiere of Koji Wakamatsu’s Petrel Hotel Blue, as well as Hirokazu Kore'eda's Air Doll, Nagisa Oshima's arch-classic In the Realm of the Senses, Yukio Ninagawa's Snakes and Earrings, Lee Sang-il's Villain, Lee Chang-dong's Oasis, and Kim Ki-duk's Bad Guy, among other twisted tales.

Today? Today is a very good day. News has come that one of the single greatest film masterpieces ever is on its way to Blu-ray high definition, and it has us grinning from ear-to-metallic-ear!
Harry over at Ain't it Cool just broke the glorious news that Kino will be releasing Fritz Lang's highly influential landmark film Metropolis onto Blu-raylater this year.
For thousands of people around the globe, Moroder’s Metropolis was their introduction to the films of Fritz Lang, and many have been waiting to see this film re-released -- with improved sound and image quality. This is it!
This “version” of Metropolis comes with music by Freddie Mercury, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Moroder, and many other famous 1980s acts, and we’re confident that interest is very high on this title. Metroopolis is Kino Lorber’s all-time best selling film – by a wide margin – and just the...

As you know from my support of the Sparrow Songs project, I’m interested in time-based online filmmaking. Filmmaker (and Blue Valentine editor) Jim Helton has just completed his own one-a-month project, Love Kills Demons.
From the website:
Over the span of one year filmmaker Jim Helton documented New York-based artist Chris Rubino while he searched for a new direction in his work. In the process we see screenprinting, drawing, painting, wandering as well as a peak inside the workings of a studio and an artist’s process. The final 12 part film that is Love Kills Demons takes a look behind the proverbial curtain exposing some of the mystery of creation supported by the otherworldly sounds of Big Blood.
Part one is below. See the complete series at the link.

Hey Everyone! So this past week has been all about one artist for me, and for any of you who have been frequenting the site, it will be no surprise who I'm talking about.
I have been having an ongoing love affair with a certain Swede ever since I first heard her amazing dance track "With Every Heartbeat" back in 2006. Since the success of her self-titled album in 2005, Robyn has been garnering International fandom and has created a comeback career many former 90's artists could only dream of (Smash Mouth, Aqua, Chumbawumba, and the list goes on and on).
This past year Robyn has released three new albums in a project entitled Body Talk with the third being released on November 22nd (I'm already loving the track "Stars 4-Ever"). Each album has been touched by some of the greatest producers of the moment including Max Martin, Diplo, Röyksopp and Kleerup.

On Wednesday night, Terminal 5 in New York was transformed into a raging rainbow dancehall as a sold-out crowd danced its hearts out in an effort to keep up with Swedish pop star Robyn, who is promoting her upcoming album Body Talk.
The audience went mad as her introduction boomed from the speakers, with robotic voices being backed by a heavy beat. After her band, dressed in all white, took their places, the bleach-blonde star ran to the center of the stage and kicked off her 90-minute set with her single "Fembot." Powerful strobes counteracted psychedelic rainbow lights as Robyn bounced, spun, and air-punched her way through her vigorous rhythms.

HollywoodNews.com: Body Talk Pt 2, the second in a trilogy of albums that Robyn will release this year on Cherrytree Records, is due out on September 7th. “Hang With Me,” the album’s lead single, will be available at all digital retailers on August 17th. The collection will also feature a duet with Snoop Dogg, who delivers what Robyn describes as a “very gangsta” performance on “U Should Know Better.”
Just last month Robyn’s Body Talk Pt 1 debuted at No. 1 in Sweden (her homeland), and Denmark. It entered Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart at No. 3. The Times of London called “Dancing On My Own,” the album’s first single, “a digital torch song worthy of Confessions-era Madonna.”

Love Kills, Kyle Jarrow's musical meditation on the relationship between Charlie Starkweather and Caril Fugate, who embarked on a killing spree in Nebraska during the late 1950's, is an intriguing piece that succeeds in confounding expectations. If there's any truth to be gleaned from the facts presented in this dramatization, then New Line Theatre's compelling production will provide you with the opportunity to judge for yourself.
