For some reason, Hollywood fell in love with British actors again in the 1990s. Sparked by Alan Rickman's turn as Hans Gruber in Die Hard at the back end of the 1980s, many movie villains were either Brits, or in the case of Cliffhanger, John Lithgow taking on the mannerisms of a British antagonist.
Yet in particular, Hollywood went recruiting British comedy talent, with faces then mainly - but not exclusively - known for their small screen work getting roles of various sizes in Hollywood productions. In March 1981, as he made his Doctor Who debut, Peter Davison was already one the best known faces on British television. Not only was he the star of both a BBC and an ITV sitcom - Sink Or Swim and Holding The Fort - but as the young and slightly reckless Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great And Small, about the often humorous cases of Yorkshire vet James Herriot and his colleagues, he had cemented his stardom. Argo continued its domination of award season by claiming one of the last of the pre-Oscar prizes — the Writers Guild Award, where screenwriter Chris Terrio won the honor for adapted screenplay.
Terrio’s competition included Tony Kushner’s Lincoln, David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, David Magee’s Life of Pi and Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. All but Chbosky are also up for the Oscar next weekend, with Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Lucy Alibar and Benh Zeitlin taking that slot.

Some may have thought that British movie director Michael Winner died years ago. He stopped making films in the ‘90s and even wrote his own joke obituary which was picked up on by some media and taken seriously. Winner continued to live in London and found a new career as a film critic with the long-running “Winner’s Dinners” column in the Sunday UK Times newspaper. Winner is remembered in the film industry as well as the restaurant scene for his abrasive personality,

Death Wish: Michael Winner’s movie vs. original novel [See previous post: "Michael Winner Dies."] "The point of the novel Death Wish," adds author Brian Garfield, "is that vigilantism is an attractive fantasy but it only makes things worse in reality. By the end of the novel, the character (Paul) is gunning down unarmed teenagers because he doesn’t like their looks. The story is about an ordinary guy who descends into madness." (Photo: Death Wish Charles Bronson.) A few years ago, Sylvester Stallone had plans to remake Death Wish, which (probably not coincidentally) has elements in common with Stallone’s (perhaps even more brutal and more pro-vigilantism) Cobra (1985). Stallone’s Death Wish remake, however, never came to fruition. Early in 2012, The Grey‘s director Joe Carnahan stated that he was planning an updated version of Death Wish. Michael Winner’s other ’70s movies: Directing Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon, and more Charles Bronson Among Michael Winner...

Peter Bradshaw looks back at the uneven and often controversial career of Michael Winner, who has died aged 77
'You don't look so bad – here's another!" With these reported words in 1984, the once notorious "subway vigilante" Bernhard Goetz put another bullet into a mugger he'd shot on a New York subway train. It was a sensational incident which briefly rewakened the gun debate in the Us, but for Goetz resulted only in an illegal firearm conviction: a jury found him not guilty of attempted murder and assault. There was no doubt which movie was foremost in the minds of both press and public: the rape-revenge picture Death Wish, made 10 years before by the smart and workmanlike British director Michael Winner.
Goetz had sensationally made Winner's fantasy a reality. The film spawned a number of sequels, the second of which, Death Wish 3 in 1985, was explicitly inspired by Goetz. In the original,...

Joanna Lumley, Gordon Ramsay and Danny Baker are among those paying tribute to the film-maker turned restaurant critic, who has died aged 77
Tributes to Michael Winner, the film director turned restaurant critic, have poured in as news broke of his death, aged 77, from liver failure.
Speaking to the Guardian, the actor Joanna Lumley, who starred in Winner's final film, Parting Shots (1999), remembered his gift for inspiring those around him. "He was a truly loyal man, generous and funny and I loved him dearly. People just liked him. When he wasn't being a monster he was adorable. He was a real monstre sacré – though really more of the sacré than the monster."
Winner, who found early notoriety helming the Death Wish movie series, before moving into tamer film territory, and then taking a turn into restaurant reviewing, met Lumley while they were both shooting a television show with Robert Carrier in the mid-70s.

Andrew Pulver looks back through some of the key films of director Michael Winner, who has died aged 77
Play It Cool (1962)
Reading this on mobile? Click here to view video
After a string of short films, Winner broke into features in the early 60s, with low budget thrillers and trendy pop musicals. Quite a few of them had "cool" in the title – including the nudie pic Some Like It Cool. The Billy Fury pic Play It Cool was considerably more commercially viable, no doubt inspired by the success of Cliff Richard's Young Ones film. Fury – in a real stretch – plays an up-and coming rocker called Billy Universe; Anna Palk the heiress who he might or might not get together with, and Dennis Price (!) as her overbearing dad.

Michael Winner, director of the Death Wish movie series and A Chorus of Disapproval, who later found fame as a restaurant critic, has died at the age of 77.
Michael Winner, bon viveur, restaurant critic and arguably one of the best known British film-makers of the 20th century has died at the age of 77. "A light has gone out of my life," his wife Geraldine Lynton-Edwards said. "Michael was a wonderful man, brilliant, funny and generous."
Winner had been in ill health for a number of years and almost died after contracting a bacterial infection while holidaying on Barbados in January 2007.
Born to a wealthy family in north London, Winner cut his teeth at the BBC before making his debut as a writer-director with the 1960 crime thriller Shoot to Kill. His freewheeling 1964 sex comedy The System established him as a key chronicler of swinging 60s London and gave rise to a...

Last year’s webisode series companion to The Walking Dead, “A New Day,” followed the story of the woman sometimes referred to as “Bicycle Girl,” and was an excellent slice (sorry) of life look at the world just as the sickness started taking hold.
This new webisode series, “Cold Storage,” is equally excellent and begins just a bit further along. Starring Daniel Roebuck, Dr. Arzt on Lost, and Josh Stewart from The Dark Knight Rises, the webisodes are once again helmed by Greg Nicotero.
For the second consecutive year, Amctv.com is launching The Walking Dead original webisodes. Titled “Cold Storage,” the web series is developed, produced and directed by Emmy Award winning special effects guru Greg Nicotero. The four, five-minute shorts were produced by Generate for AMC and are now live on Amctv.com.

"Parting Shots?" Hardly! White Collar is only getting started.
Sara Ellis returned, Peter got his job back and the mystery surrounding Neal's father deepened on this week's installment of the USA Network hit.
I have to say that I was disheartened by what may or may not be Ellen's premature demise. I was really looking forward to getting some information about her and Neal's time in Witsec. I certainly didn't want to have her leave so soon.
First, Neal chased after the ghost that was Kate, now he'll be chasing after another ghost named Sam. How will Neal find him, and where will he even begin to look? This story gets more and more intriguing the further we get into it.
One epic aspect of this episode that I can no longer wait to acknowledge was the return of the ever-fabulous Sara. I don't know what it is about that girl,...

When it came out last year, the first Human Centipede film generated a huge amount of publicity due to its original, if disgusting, central idea. Within weeks of its release there were countless articles, analyses and jokes about the film – there was even a South Park episode parodying it. In spite of its place in the public consciousness however, relatively few people actually watched the film.
Consequently, when the inevitable sequel, Human Centipede 2 was announced, it initially didn’t make much of a splash outside of our film fanatic community. Even in the run up to the film’s planned straight-to-dvd release this summer, it wasn’t getting more coverage than any similar cult horror film.
And then, in June, the British Board of Film Classification ‘banned’* it, causing every news outlet in the country, and many more around the world to suddenly take an interest in the movie. We were no exception,...

I struggle to remember a more oppressive portrayal of crime as a "family business" than that offered by the Australian thriller Animal Kingdom (2010, Optimum, 15). James Frecheville stars as Joshua "J" Cody, a misplaced youth who finds himself in the care of a tight-knit brood of sociopathic outlaws for whom the bank robbery business offers dwindling returns. Under constant surveillance from the police, and scornful of the allure of drug dealing and day trading, the Cody clan seem suicidally set on one last hurrah in which "J" must play a small but significant part. Will his pack loyalties outweigh his hard-learned survival instincts? Or will offers of a witness protection programme from paternal Sergeant Leckie (Guy Pearce) cause him to betray his violent brood?

It's got Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis in it, along with a Spaced reunion in the rest of the cast. John Landis is directing. So, can Burke And Hare live up to its potential?
John Landis has given us some great comedy films over the years, including The Blues Brothers, Animal House and Coming To America. Arguably his most well-loved film is the cult classic horror comedy An American Werewolf In London, a wry cocktail of horror and comedy that provokes as many screams as guffaws.
Having not made a feature film since 1998's derided sequel effort, Blues Brothers 2000, Landis now brings us Burke And Hare, a macabre comedy based on the historical West Port murders. The real William Burke and William Hare murdered 17 people in the 1820s, at the behest of a private anatomy lecturer who needed cadavers for public dissection.
