A month after they got back to work and started airing post-wga strike originals, early late night returns show good news for Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert — while in daytime, Kelly Clarkson’s move to New York was a winning strategy in its first week of new episodes.
Talk shows were among the first original programs to return to air following the resolution of the Writers Guild of America strike, with the late night shows all returning the week of Oct. 2 after a five-month hiatus. With the shows back now a month, ABC is touting that “Jimmy Kimmel Live” has won the first four weeks of the season among adults 18-49 — and that four consecutive week streak marks the show’s longest at No. 1 in the demo since more than a year ago.

Maury Povich wants to confirm whether or not Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are half-brothers.
During a recent interview with McConaughey, E! News shared a video message from Povich, in which the former “Maury” host told the actor that he “would come out of retirement” to give him and Harrelson a DNA test.
“We could do primetime, ‘DNA: Maury’s Back With Woody and Matthew.’ I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair,” Povich said in the video. “Woody’s got my number. I’m ready.”
The retired television personality, known for his signature “you are not the father” phrase, conducted DNA tests on his eponymous talk show “Maury,” which aired from 1991 to 2022.
McConaughey, who was promoting his debut children’s picture book “Just Because” on E! News, said in response to the clip, “I don’t know if we’re going to be calling you to do it on your show,...

As Drew Barrymore digs herself into a deeper hole regarding the return of her daytime talk show, lost in the debate is a conversation about the peculiar nature of syndicated TV.
One week ago, Barrymore ignited a firestorm when she announced her talk show would be returning amid the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. In the week since, tensions worsened and Barrymore, normally well-liked for her good-natured personality, intensified that criticism when she doubled down with a second, now-deleted, video message. If anything, her attempt to quell any criticism had the opposite effect.
Barrymore is at the eye of the storm, but she is not the only daytime host returning this upcoming week. “The Jennifer Hudson Show” and CBS’ “The Talk,” which is not syndicated, will launch new seasons on Monday, Sept. 18, as well as Sherri Shepherd’s “Sherri” and Karamo Brown’s “Karamo,” though those two shows are not struck or covered by the WGA,...

Maury Povich struck ratings gold with paternity tests on his long-running daytime TV talk show. He’s now taking the direct-to-consumer route and launching an at-home paternity test aptly dubbed “The Results Are In.”
Speaking to TMZ, the 84-year-old TV personality said partnering up with DNA Diagnostic Center (Ddc) made perfect sense considering his connection to the company for more than 20 years. Ddc was the company that performed the paternity tests on his eponymous talk show. Given their long history, Povich says it’s why his business manager came to him with the idea.
“He says, ‘You know, I have an idea.’ What? ‘You are so well known about paternity testing and we have talked to the DNA Diagnostic Center, Ddc, which is the company that ran all of our DNA tests for over 20 years,” Povich said. “I mean thousands, upon thousands of tests; 99.9 percent accurate. Susan Lucci and Maury Povich will be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 50th Annual Daytime Emmys.
The Emmys were supposed to be held today on CBS. But the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in May announced it was postponing them, as well as the June 17 Creative Arts & Lifestyle ceremony, because of the WGA strike.
Lucci and Povich will be celebrated in person once the awards are rescheduled.
“I am truly humbled to receive this esteemed award from the Academy,” Lucci said in a statement. “Throughout my career, I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside exceptional talents and embraced by my fans that have been with me every step of the way. For the entirety of Hadassah’s life, the 41-year-old was unsure if the person she grew up knowing as her dad was actually her biological father. Hadassah’s parents, Rutha and Shawn, had her when they were teenagers, and because of the tumultuous relationship between them and their families, there were rumors throughout Hadassah’s childhood about the truth behind Shawn’s paternity status.
This is why the three of them shared the stage as guests on The Karamo Show, hosted by one of the Emmy-nominated co-stars of Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot, Karamo Brown, in an episode that taped on a cold December morning in Stamford, Connecticut. Hadassah wanted to confront her parents about her past trauma and take a DNA test to put the issue to bed once and for all.

Audiences often groan at having to sit through yet another superhero origin story, especially one that's already so embedded in pop culture that even people who've never read a comic book in their lives could describe it. The CW's "Smallville," which takes a look at the formative years of Clark Kent before he became Superman, could've fallen into the trap of repeating so many of the same story elements that we're all so familiar with. And yet, the series -- which launched in 2001 and ended in 2011 -- managed to wring a lot of great material out of Clark's early days and, for the most part, maintain its high quality over the course of 10 seasons.
Part of what made "Smallville" work so well was its creators' ability to fuse the teen drama that made the CW so popular with young people during the network's heyday with thrilling superheroics and action set pieces.

Chris Rock is giving politics a punchline.
The comedian referenced former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband Paul Pelosi during the Kennedy Center awards honoring Adam Sandler for the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
“Paul Pelosi [is[ the only guy who knows how I felt,” Rock said, comparing Will Smith slapping him at the 2022 Oscars to the October 2022 assault on Pelosi (via USA Today). “Just me and you, Paul.”
Both Pelosis were in the audience at the Kennedy Center. Pelosi suffered a fractured skull after an intruder broke in his home demanding where Nancy is. Pelosi had to undergo surgery following the attack.
After Best Actor winner Smith slapped Rock onstage following a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s haircut, Rock allegedly had a bruised lip and cut face. Rock said during his Netflix live comedy special “Selective Outrage” that his face “still hurts” after Smith assaulted him.
Rock also joked during his stand-up tour over the incident. “Did that shit hurt?...

Jimmy Kimmel is starting off the 2023 Oscars with a slap to the system.
The host of the 95th Academy Awards, who marks his third time Mc’ing the annual awards ceremony, started his opening monologue by addressing the 2022 Oscars slap.
“We want you to have fun, we want you to be safe, and most importantly, we want me to be safe,” Kimmel said. “If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence anytime during this show, you will be presented the Oscar for Best Actor and be permitted to give an 18-minute long speech.”
Kimmel noted that is a “crisis team” in place, but in case things do go sideways, he joked, “Just do what you did last year – nothing. Sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe give the assailant a hug.”
The host said, “If anyone tries anything, you’re going to have to get through the heavyweight champ Adonis Creed,...

Former CBS executive Scott Koondel’s Sox Entertainment, which distributes Judy Justice, is actively exploring selling the show’s library — about 260 episodes — to TV stations for fall 2023 or fall 2024, sources tell Deadline. Cable syndication also is a possibility, I hear.

Bill Maher has an interesting solution to bring about peace between Republicans and Democrats and get some actual work done for the country. And where better to turn for an example of how to work with people you despise and still turn out a good product than Hollywood?
On Friday’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the host and comedian began by revisiting the disrespectful display by the right during President Biden’s State of the Union address and warning that “someday soon an actual brawl breaks out on the floor of Congress,” and when that happens, “don’t say, I didn’t tell you it was coming.”

One of TV's most iconic daytime series is coming to an end.
Dr. Phil McGraw announced Tuesday evening that his show would wrap up this spring following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
According to Variety, the hope is to keep the show's legacy continuing with repeats.
Much like Judge Judy, these shows tend to still pack a punch even in encores, meaning that the markets will be interested in keeping it around in some capacity.
"I have been blessed with over 25 wonderful years in daytime television," McGraw said in a statement.
"With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children."

Another daytime fixture, Dr. Phil McGraw, is leaving after more than two decades as one of television’s most popular talk show hosts. His syndicated daytime show, Dr. Phil, will end its run of original episodes with the current 2022-2023 television season, the show’s 21st.
McGraw’s decision comes as his most recent contract is coming to an end. Dr. Phil received a five-season renewal in 2018 as part of a mega-deal extension with CBS Media Ventures, taking it through its current season.

It’s a new day in daytime TV. On Thursday, Ellen DeGeneres left the syndicated talk-show airwaves after 19 years — and that leaves Kelly Clarkson on the starting block, poised to make a run for first place against longtime leaders “Dr. Phil” and “Live With Kelly & Ryan.”
Clarkson will take the “Ellen” slot this fall. Her show, like “Ellen” and “Maury,” averages a 0.4 rating among women 25-54 this season, the key demo for ad sales on syndicated daytime talk shows. “Wendy Williams,” which was guest-hosted this season by a stable of fill-ins including Sherri Shepherd (who gets her own show this fall), also averaged a 0.4 rating.
That means they all tie for third place in daytime’s syndicated talk space, but three of those four aired their series finales. Clarkson’s show is the only one continuing this fall, much to the delight of Tracie Wilson, the executive VP of NBCUniversal...

In 2017, Wendy Williams fainted on live television. The daytime gossip queen quickly got up and continued her show, but that episode signaled the beginning of health issues that plagued Williams. At the start of the fall 2021 TV season, the host went on a hiatus due to complications from Graves’ disease but, ultimately, never returned. As a result, “The Wendy Williams Show” is coming to a sudden end next month after a 14-year run.
Williams, who helped redefined the daytime space after conquering radio with her gift for gab, has said in various interviews that she plans to return to her show this fall. But with plans charging ahead for the 2022-23 television season, Williams isn’t reclaiming her purple chair so soon — and even if she did, she’d return to a daytime landscape that has dramatically changed almost overnight.

After over 30 years of dramatically issuing paternity tests and being the highlight of the "sick day" television lineup for countless school children in the days before streaming platforms and dedicated children's entertainment networks existed, tabloid talk show "Maury" has been canceled.
The show first debuted in 1991 as "The Maury Povich Show," but the title was eventually shortened to "Maury" in 1998. While the show has covered a range of topics and featured a variety of guests over its decades long run, it is ultimately a blatantly exploitative talk show that immediately calls to mind chaotic imagery of distraught men and women running off...

Get those paternity tests in now, because “Maury” won’t help you find out whether you’re the father beyond this September. “Maury” is the latest daytime talker to announce that it’s ceasing production in 2022, in what is now amounting to a major shift in the daypart.
Maury Povich is ending his run and retiring after 24 seasons of hosting “Maury” for NBCUniversal Syndication Studios (and its predecessors) — and seven seasons before that at Paramount Domestic Television, where it was titled “The Maury Povich Show.” Most recently, NBCU had renewed “Maury” in February 2020 for two more seasons in national syndication, bringing it through 2022.
Povich’s exit comes as NBCU also ends another first-run syndicated series, “Judge Jerry,” hosted by Jerry Springer, after three seasons. And the daytime talk landscape is being remade as “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Nick Cannon” and “The Wendy Williams Show” all say farewell.

Ken Jennings’ stint guest-hosting “Jeopardy!” drew a 6.2 rating in Week 1, down about 5% from the same week last year. It topped all of syndication in ratings, according to Nielsen. The former champion was the first to host episodes of the Sony TV quiz show following the passing of Alex Trebek.
The Jennings week averaged 10.3 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, making it the second-most-watched (outside of Trebek’s final five episodes) week of the current season. Ken Jennings’ first evening behind the podium drew 11.3 million total viewers.
The comparable week in early 2020, episodes that were obviously hosted by Trebek, drew a 6.5 average rating.
For the previous week, Trebek’s final one, “Jeopardy!” averaged a 6.6 rating and 11.1 million viewers. That means Jennings’ run of five shows ticked down 6% in ratings week to week — both of those are relatively minor declines in the current TV landscape.
Coming in second place for the week ending Jan.

Regis Philbin posthumously delivered big viewership to his old daytime talk show, “Live.” For the week ending Aug. 2, the week following Philbin’s passing at age 88, “Live With Kelly and Ryan” ratings soared 19% from the prior week to reach a seven-week high. The show’s 1.9 Live + Same Day national Nielsen rating led “Live” to top all syndicated talkers — yes, including typical winner “Dr. Phil,” which drew a steady 1.8 rating. As per usual, “Judge Judy” blew away all of the other daytime syndicated shows, averaging a 5.6 rating despite airing all reruns. On July 31, “Live With Kelly and Ryan” re-aired the Nov. 8, 2011 “Regis Farewell Celebration Special.

CBS leads all networks, and ABC’s “General Hospital” tops all programs, as nominations for the 47th annual Daytime Awards were announced Thursday by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
“General Hospital” garnered a total of 23 nominations, followed closely by the other major TV soaps: NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” (22), CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” (21) and CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” (13). Digital drama series “Eastsiders” (Netflix) and “Studio City” (Amazon Prime Video) landed eight nods each, while among daytime talk shows, ABC’s “The View” led all competitors, with eight nominations as well.
The most-nominated kids’ series were Apple TV Plus’ “Ghostwriter” and HBO’s “Sesame Street,” also at eight nominations. Interestingly, both are programs from Sesame Workshop that were once seen on PBS in previous incarnations. (The HBO episodes of “Sesame Street” are still run in a second window on PBS.)

Syndicated talk-show king “Dr. Phil” hit a new season high in TV ratings for the week of Feb. 24 to March 1, a period with a turbulent cycle of current events, including Kobe Bryant’s memorial service, the Harvey Weinstein verdict, the South Carolina Democratic primary debate and the coronavirus outbreak.
With all of that breaking news came a number of preemptions across the competition. It’s not like “Dr. Phil” wouldn’t have topped all of the talkers anyway, but being one of the only games in town likely helped its Nielsen numbers.
The talk show, hosted by Phil McGraw, scored a 2.8 average rating according to Nielsen’s Live + Same Day measurement, a rise of 8% over the week prior. “Live With Kelly and Ryan” finished second with a 2.0 rating, while Ellen DeGeneres’ eponymous talker came in third place with 1.9.

“Psycho.” “The Silence of the Lambs.” “Dressed to Kill.” What do all of these classic films have in common? They feature a transgender or gender variant person as a psychotic, deranged, murderous villain. The pesky trope began with “Psycho,” in what would become a favorite theme of Alfred Hitchcock’s, and proliferated throughout some of the most iconic thrillers of the last fifty years. Then there’s the “trans deception” narrative, which originated with dramas like “The Crying Game” and “M. Butterfly” but soon became a mainstay in comedies like “Tootsie,” “Bosom Buddies,” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.”
There are countless troubling examples of trans characters being portrayed as evil and duplicitous or sad and pathetic, far more than the average cinephile realizes. Most of the time, trans characters die before the end of a movie or TV episode. They’re all discussed in “Disclosure: Trans Lives Onscreen,” a new...

For its last cold open of 2019 — and the first since Donald Trump’s impeachment — Saturday Night Live once again corralled its all-star cast of Democratic presidential nominees as well as Alec Baldwin’s President Trump, who invades the latest Democratic debate.
This week’s combatants included Elizabeth Warren (Kate McKinnon), Andrew Yang (Bowen Yang), Pete Buttigieg (Colin Jost), Amy Klobuchar (Rachel Dratch), Bernie Sanders (Larry David), Joe Biden (Jason Sudeikis, replacing Woody Harrelson and reprising his Obama-era SNL role) and, filling in for Tom Steyer, Fred Armisen’s Michael Bloomberg.

In the market for a “hilarious party game for adults”? NBCUniversal Television Distribution has adapted its trashy talk show “Maury” into a board game called “The Maury Show: You Are Not the Father.”
The very real game is currently available for preorder on Amazon and will be shipped beginning Nov. 27. Yeah, just in time for Thanksgiving — a holiday that clearly needs more familial arguing.
Below is how the game is described by NBCU.
The show is known for its compelling relationship drama, family issues, infidelity, and signature paternity tests. “The Maury Game: You Are Not The Father” will allow players to clear their name, “Maury”-style, with this hilarious party game for adults. The game challenges players to prove their non-paternity through a series of outrageous accusations and laugh-out-loud arguments.
At the end, a paternity test is “performed” and the “results” lie in each player’s Test Results envelope. Play...
