The success of Netflix’s Castlevania can be measured by the fact that the video game adaptation got renewed for four consecutive seasons and then a spinoff series. This was truly a great achievement, as there are very few Netflix-produced anime series that have become so popular among anime fans.
Dracula – Castlevania | Powerhouse Animation
One of the reasons the series was such a big hit is because of its main antagonist, Dracula, the leader and King of the Vampires. Dracula’s appearance in the first two seasons attracted fans and helped the series gain popularity. However, he was killed in the second season, which became a big problem for Castlevania and its creators.
Warren Ellis, the writer of Castlevania, once revealed that Dracula’s death became the biggest challenge for them as it slimmed the chances of the third season of the series. However, they still managed to save the...

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
King of the Ants
While Stuart Gordon cemented himself as a master of horror with early works like Re-Animator and From Beyond, his later output is also worthy of exploration. 2003’s King of the Ants kicked off a trio of intense thrillers (alongside Edmond and Stuck) that would end up being Gordon’s final features. It was also one of the first productions from The Asylum, who would go on to create Sharknado, Z Nation, and Black Summer.
Based on the 1992 novel by Charlie Higson, who also wrote the screenplay, the film’s unusual structure makes it unpredictable. Struggling to make ends meet,...

Albums revolving around the subject of nascent motherhood are tricky propositions. They can too easily slip into weepy tributes to pristine bundles of flesh or get bogged down in awe-filled self-aggrandizement. After all, is there anything more godlike than creating another human being?
Natasha Khan, a.k.a. Bat for Lashes, largely evades both of these pitfalls on her sixth studio album, Dream of Delphi. The British singer-songwriter gave birth to her first child—Delphi, named after the Greek oracle—at the height of the pandemic, and the self-produced album serves as a humble, meditative tribute to the innate bonds between a mother and her child.
Inspired by French film scores and Japanese ambient music like that of the late Sakamoto Ryuichi, the album’s 10 compositions are lyrically sparse, with a handful eschewing language altogether. The lyrical minimalism of the shoegazy lullaby “Delphi Dancing” conveys the inarticulable emotions of new...

The Alien Report: "The Alien Report follows "The Abductee" (Braxton Hale), an everyday American who finds himself hijacked by extraterrestrial beings and taken on a terrifying journey of self-preservation, running afoul of classic "grey aliens", disturbing human-et hybrids, and the U.S. government's shady Men in Black. Based on countless documented reports made by self-proclaimed abductees, The Alien Report is a meticulous, straight-faced look at what an real-life alien abduction would be like, from the perspective of first-person cameras.
The Alien Report has screened at festivals worldwide, winning awards in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Brazil. Shot on iPhone and GoPro cameras as a non-traditional narrative composed of re-assembled found footage, the picture plays out as both a sci-fi thriller and first-person documentary. It is the intended first chapter in a trilogy of films about extraterrestrial abductions.
The Alien Report was directed by Patrick Donnelly and produced by Kevin Schroeder and Michael Sell.

I don’t know of many Christmas horror adaptations. Sure, I could probably look at the history of Krampus and piece something together but other than that I’m hard pressed so let me know in the comments what I could cover next holiday season. Winter in general has all sorts of movies and stories that they are based off of. The very first episode of this show was all about The Thing and its source material Who Goes There and now in the middle of winter, at least in Colorado, I think it’s time to look at one of the better vampire properties of the 2000s and a great limited series comic. 30 Days of Night was originally pitched as a movie but when it was turned down, the comic came out and put the author’s name on the map. As is the nature of Hollywood, it...

He may be the greatest horror director of all time (just ask Jordan Peele), but John Carpenter’s film taste skews farther away from the genre than you might expect.
Born in 1948 in Carthage, New York, Carpenter grew up with a love of cinema, watching Howard Hawks westerns an early age, and started making short films with an 8mm camera before he started high school. He studied at Western Kentucky University and University of Southern California, before dropping out of the latter after a short he made, “The Resurrection of Broncho Billy,” won an Oscar.
Now with a sudden amount of prestige, Carpenter made two little seen projects “Dark Star” and “Assault on Precinct 13,” both now critically acclaimed, before really breaking out with 1978’s “Halloween.” Starring a young Jamie Lee Curtis, the independent film became a massive hit, grossing $70 million, turning main villain Michael Myers into a horror icon,...

In this show, we highlight all of our favourite horror movies from arguably the greatest decade for horror, with tons of very special guests. The decade started with a bang, with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the first instalment in the Friday the 13th series, John Carpenter’s The Fog, and more. Check out our feature-length examination of 1980 here, but this week, we’re looking at 1981.

John Carpenter is a master of horror — the man practically invented the slasher subgenre with 1978’s Halloween (with a big assist from Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Peeping Tom). His remake of The Thing in 1982 is still regularly cited as one of the most terrifying films of all time. Not to mention the fact that he went on to make In the Mouth of Madness, They Live, and Christine. If we ignore his 1998 film Vampires (and we really should ignore it), Carpenter has one of the most pristine cinematic records for churning out terrifying horror time and time again.

In 1998, horror master John Carpenter put his stamp on the vampire genre. "John Carpenter's Vampires" deals with many familiar tropes within the well-trod horror sub-genre, but in true Carpenter fashion, it certainly adds some fun elements to the mix. The film centers on Jack Crow (James Woods), whose parents were killed by vampires. He dedicates his life to hunting them down, until one day he comes face to face with an ultra-powerful vampire kingpin.
Even if this isn't hailed alongside some of Carpenter's more influential films, such as "Halloween" or "They Live," there are several stand-out scenes contained within -- perhaps most notably, the hotel massacre sequence. Speaking with Filmmaker Magazine in 2015, Carpenter addressed another memorable scene that sees several vampires digging their way out of the ground after a night's sleep. It turns out, the director actually buried the actors to pull off the scene.
"It was in the script.

John Carpenter's 1998 film "Vampires" -- based on the 1990 novel "Vampire$" by John Steakley -- is 30% vampire movie and 70% Western. It follows a cadre of ultra-masculine, cussing, toxic badass vampire hunters who wear black clothes and treat women like garbage. They are led by a snarling jerk named Jack Crow, played by James Woods, and you may insert your own joke about savvy casting here. This team of vampire hunters is sponsored by the Vatican and receives a hefty payout every time they infiltrate and exterminate a nest of bloodsuckers.
In this universe, vampires hide in desert shacks during the daylight hours, and sometimes merely bury themselves in sand. They are all ghoulish monsters immune to crosses, holy water, and garlic. The vampire hunters stalk into said shacks and fire wooden stakes into vampire chests with specialized harpooning equipment. The hunters also attached tethers to the vampires, then activated a winch outdoors,...

The second David Bowie World Fan Convention hit New York in June, featuring some of David Bowie’s closest collaborators in music, film, and fashion. Vocalist, songwriter, model, and actor Ava Cherry sang on some of Bowie’s most transformative records, and changed his outlook on music, fashion, and nightlife. From 1974 to 1978, Cherry was one-third of Bowie’s vocal backing trio, appearing onstage, in the studio, and on all TV appearances. Cherry and Bowie’s relationship was even closer than that, beginning as lovers, and enduring as friends.
According to the autobiography All That Glitters, written by Cherry and Lisa Torem, Ava was raised in Chicago, taking a job at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion when she was 17 years old, before moving to New York and working at the nightclub Genesis. This is where she met Bowie, who asked her to provide backing vocals on an upcoming tour in Japan.

In a conversation with Vulture, Alice Cooper pooh-poohed Hollywood Vampires bandmate Johnny Depp’s 2022 defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. The trial was filled with sensational claims, including one involving a deposit on the bed.
Cooper said that the topic never came up while the band was on tour “because nobody cared.”
“I never watched a moment of the trials,” Cooper said. “It was so blown out of proportion. It was such a Hollywood thing. I knew Johnny was gonna win because how many people have other exes literally on their side testifying for him? That never happens. I turned it right off and said, ‘Well, you know, Johnny will weather this storm and when he’s onstage, he’s our guitar player.'”
He added, “If you talk to Johnny about it, it was something that happened. He was just like, ‘Yeah, yeah, what’s the next song?’ … I...

After The Beatles broke up, John Lennon publicly derided Paul McCartney, but Alice Cooper said the musician behaved differently behind closed doors. While he could speak ill of his former bandmate, nobody else could. Cooper shared how Lennon would react and revealed that McCartney had a similar approach.
Alice Cooper said John Lennon defended Paul McCartney
After Cooper rose to fame himself, he got to know The Beatles. Their breakup was messy and painful for the former bandmates. Lennon and McCartney insulted each other’s music and behavior. Still, Cooper said they never allowed others to speak badly about the band. Lennon would go so far as to try to fight people who insulted McCartney.
“Here’s the thing about them,” he said, per iHeartRadio. “When they were after each other’s throats, when it came to the breakup and all that stuff, if anybody in the Vampires back in...

The time has come again for Barack Obama to share his summer playlist; as usual, it’s a mix of classics and modern hits. Catch the former president with headphones on, and you may hear him listening to modern cool kids like boygenius or Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj, or revered legends like Leonard Cohen. You may also hear him listening to “Walk Like an Egyptian.”
You could clown on Obama for including the latter track, but you can’t say The Bangles don’t deliver some summery fun! Those good vibes continue with cuts like 2Pac’s “California Love” and Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” Elsewhere, the 2023 playlist slows down for Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” and Luke Combs’ take on “Fast Car,” Tracy Chapman’s 1988 song that recently charted even higher than before thanks to the unlikely country cover.

A few weeks into kicking off his "Saturno World Tour," Puerto Rican and Latin trap artist Rauw Alejandro made a show-stopping entrance to an audience of more than 15,000 people by literally zip-lining his way onto the stage - while he was fully decked out in an alien-like ensemble. On Friday, Mar. 31, the reggaetonero put on a truly extraterrestrial performance - one of two back-to-back sold-out shows at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in his hometown of San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Popsugar was in attendance.
If these flashy performances were any indication, 2023 is panning out to become quite significant for Rauw Alejandro. Born Raúl Alejandro Ocasio Ruiz, the artist has been on top of his game these days. Last year, he claimed his fourth straight top 10 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart with his 2022 album "Saturno," which debuted at No. 2 on Nov. 26.

Three years ago, when relationship rumors began swirling between the Spanish fusionist Rosalia and Puerto Rican multi-hyphenate Rauw Alejandro, the two of them did their best to keep their budding romance under wraps. This, of course, only fueled more interest in the couple, who surprised some fans with a bond that made perfect sense to some and none to others: She was known as an avant-pop innovator with a penchant for provocation, while he was a smooth, quick-stepping reggaeton and R&b star, gliding and gyrating his way to the top of the charts.

A new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at a film that was made by one of the legendary “masters of horror”. The master in question is Tobe Hooper, the director who brought us The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Funhouse, and the Hooper movie we’re recommending today is his 1985 “space vampires” sci-fi horror movie Lifeforce (watch it Here). To find out all about Lifeforce, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Hooper from a screenplay by Dan O’Bannon and Don Jakoby and based on the novel The Space Vampires by Colin Wilson, Lifeforce has the following synopsis: A mission to investigate Halley’s Comet discovers an even stranger phenomenon: an alien spacecraft! Following a deadly confrontation, the aliens arrive on Earth, where their seductive leader begins a terrifying campaign to...

A new episode of our The Black Sheep video series was just released through the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, and with this one we’re looking back at director John Carpenter’s 1998 film Vampires (watch it Here). A movie that has its share of fans, but still doesn’t get as much respect as some of Carpenter’s earlier films. To hear why we think Vampires deserves more love, check out the video embedded above.
Scripted by Don Jakoby and inspired by the novel Vampire by John Steakley, Vampires has the following synopsis:
Ever since his parents were murdered by vampires, Jack Crow has had one purpose in life: putting stakes through bloodsuckers’ hearts. With his battle-hardened crew of vampire killers and the assistance of the Catholic Church, Crow roams the New Mexico desert looking for undead lairs to annihilate. I will be the first to admit that streaming debates are not my thing. The vast amount of streaming services that are out there right now makes it extremely hard to navigate the media landscape, and the market seems to be inching closer to reinventing cable. All I want to do is watch my silly little programs -- I don't want to spend minutes combing through different libraries and searching "[Insert Movie Here] streaming" on Google to do so! Unfortunately, this is the climate that I and many others must navigate, and because I'm not smart enough to think of a better solution, I must do the best with what I have.
If you're a horror fan like I am, then navigating the streaming world is even harder. There are just so many movies that either aren't available, are only available on the most niche service possible, or have some sort of limitation to the version that's streaming.

As the old saying goes, "success has many fathers, failure is an orphan." John Carpenter's 1978 classic, "Halloween," is the very definition of a successful film: it made so much money that it held the record for the highest-grossing independent movie of all time for numerous years, and it became so influential that it not only kickstarted a boom of horror movies in the late '70s and early '80s, but solidified the subgenre known as the slasher film, creating a template that other successful movies like "Friday the 13th" and "Scream" utilized and riffed on.
All this success means that a number of folks over the decades have attempted to precisely define what made "Halloween" so special. Of course, like any work of art, "Halloween" was not cut from whole cloth, drawing as it did upon the storied history of other horror movies and media in general for inspiration.

John Carpenter is a horror legend. Over his decades-long career, he has turned out classic after classic, even being awarded the Golden Coach Award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The likes of "Halloween" reinvented the horror genre, revolutionizing the slasher film while cementing chief antagonist Michael Myers as a horror icon to be reckoned with. Remakes such as "The Thing" were wonders of practical effects, and "Starman" proved that Carpenter could move hearts as easily as he could incite screams.
His last directorial effort was 2010's "The Ward," and in the time since he's settled into a rhythm of gaming and producing, forgoing most modern horror movies for some well-deserved time where the shots are his call to make. Still, his compositional contributions to the latest "Halloween" trilogy are as good as his work's ever been, and he's even teasing his desire to direct a "Dead Space" movie. At this point,...

(Welcome to Year of the Vampire, a series examining the greatest, strangest, and sometimes overlooked vampire movies of all time in honor of "Nosferatu," which turns 100 this year.)
Vampire movies have been a part of cinema for a long, long time. Sure, a great many of those movies center on your classic "Dracula in a cape," and at times, that can be great. But vampire flicks that go a little bit outside the box have always been a little bit more my speed.
Such is the case with "Daybreakers," an ambitious, kind of crazy mid-size movie that has largely slipped through the cracks in the years since its release. I'm here to propose that we absolutely should not let it slip away entirely.
Directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, aka the Spierig brothers, the film takes place a decade after a plague turns most of the world's population into vampires.

Though their “’80s Horror” lineup would constitute enough of a Halloween push, the Criterion Channel enter October all guns blazing. The month’s lineup also includes a 19-movie vampire series running from 1931’s Dracula (English and Spanish both) to 2014’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, the collection in-between including Herzog’s Nosferatu, Near Dark, and Let the Right One In. Last year’s “Universal Horror” collection returns, a 17-title Ishirō Honda retrospective has been set, and a few genre titles stand alone: Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The House of the Devil, and Island of Lost Souls.
Streaming premieres include restorations of Tsai Ming-liang’s Vive L’amour and Ed Lachman’s Lou Reed / John Cale concert film Songs for Drella; October’s Criterion editions are Samuel Fuller’s Forty Guns, Bill Duke’s Deep Cover, Haxan, and My Own Private Idaho. Meanwhile, Ari Aster has curated an “Adventures...

“Nope.” That’s the maddening morsel of a clue writer-director Jordan Peele gave audiences before unleashing his third horror flick into theaters on July 22: “Nope.”
Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea, and Michael Wincott star in this science fiction horror outing set against the legacies of horse ranchers in Hollywood (we think). Although Peele’s latest project has been somewhat vague in its rollout, he’s not the first horror auteur to make their monosyllabic mark with a title that’s doggedly vexing and slyly sinister. Dating back to the earliest days of the movies, films such as “Noseferatu,” “Dracula,” “Freaks,” “Maniac,” “Bedlam,” “Godzilla,” “Rodan,” and more have kept things scary and succinct with titles that practically demand audiences venture into theaters to uncover the terrors behind these single word hints.
The best one-word horror movie titles act as good faith challenges to genre lovers. Want to see whose “Teeth” do what?...
