US research suggests that 92 minutes is the optimum length for a film. But I have sat through long films that felt short and short films that felt buttock-annihilatingly long
I can still remember sitting down to Theo Angelopoulos’s legendary epic film The Travelling Players and noting that it was 222 minutes long and thinking … sure, cool, two hours and twenty-two minutes, tiny bit on the long side, Ok, nothing I can’t handle. The truth hit me just as the house lights were starting to dim and that spasm of unease came back into my mind reading about the new US research survey that suggests that 92 minutes is the “perfect” length for a film.
The “perfect” length? What does that even mean? Larry David fans will remember his magnificent resentment in Curb Your Enthusiasm when someone tries to think of something nice to say about his hugely unsuccessful feature film...

Back in 2016, John Prine was having trouble writing new songs. It had been more than a decade since his last album, 2005’s excellent Fair & Square, and the longer he waited to release a new one, the more anxious he felt. “One of the reasons I’m having such a difficult time is, I don’t wanna just sit down and write a little couplet that’s kind of witty, or something,” he said, sitting in his Nashville office. (He didn’t use the term “office” seriously — he didn’t consider his job work.

If you've followed Suits since the beginning, then you know one thing is certain: Nothing for Louis ever goes the right way.
On Suits Season 8 Episode 7, Louis was happy to learn that he and Sheila were expecting a child, and while the lawyer got a bit ahead of himself, it was typical of Louis to act the way he did.
Having Louis and Sheila together again was surprising in the first place, especially when you consider that it's one step forward, and two back with Louis.
There was no emotional weight behind the pregnancy reveal so early into "Sour Grapes." It seemed like the type of news Sheila would want to share with her man over a nice dinner.
Then again, the pair has been battling the odds to conceive a child. I can get on board with her being so excited that she absolutely had to call him at work to let him know.

Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

'Saint Joan': Constance Cummings as the George Bernard Shaw heroine. Constance Cummings on stage: From sex-change farce and Emma Bovary to Juliet and 'Saint Joan' (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Frank Capra, Mae West and Columbia Lawsuit.”) In the mid-1930s, Constance Cummings landed the title roles in two of husband Benn W. Levy's stage adaptations: Levy and Hubert Griffith's Young Madame Conti (1936), starring Cummings as a demimondaine who falls in love with a villainous character. She ends up killing him – or does she? Adapted from Bruno Frank's German-language original, Young Madame Conti was presented on both sides of the Atlantic; on Broadway, it had a brief run in spring 1937 at the Music Box Theatre. Based on the Gustave Flaubert novel, the Theatre Guild-produced Madame Bovary (1937) was staged in late fall at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre. Referring to the London production of Young Madame Conti, The...

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). Finally taking its rightful place at the top, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hagedus’ Unlocking the Cage is in the midst of being scored by composer James Lavino, according to Lavino’s own personal site. Though the project has been taking shape at its own leisurely pace, I’d expect to see the film making its festival debut in early 2016.

Constance Cummings in 'Night After Night.' Constance Cummings: Working with Frank Capra and Mae West (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Actress Went from Harold Lloyd to Eugene O'Neill.”) Back at Columbia, Harry Cohn didn't do a very good job at making Constance Cummings feel important. By the end of 1932, Columbia and its sweet ingenue found themselves in court, fighting bitterly over stipulations in her contract. According to the actress and lawyer's daughter, Columbia had failed to notify her that they were picking up her option. Therefore, she was a free agent, able to offer her services wherever she pleased. Harry Cohn felt otherwise, claiming that his contract player had waived such a notice. The battle would spill over into 1933. On the positive side, in addition to Movie Crazy 1932 provided Cummings with three other notable Hollywood movies: Washington Merry-Go-Round, American Madness, and Night After Night. 'Washington Merry-Go-Round...

Larry David's new HBO film Clear History is in some ways a more successful reboot (and atonement?) of the 1998 film Sour Grapes, which he wrote and directed. David often has joked about that film's failures, but he seems to have learned from mistakes in a way his characters never do. Clear History covers similar ground to Sour Grapes -- money, greed and vengeance -- but David taking the lead role this time is what brings the whole work together. He also has collaborated with some of the writers (Alec Berg, David Mandel, Jeff Schaffer) from his long-running HBO series Curb

Larry David stars in HBO Films' "Clear History," the story of Nathan Flomm (David), a marketing executive at a start-up electric car company who sells his shares after a fight with his boss (Jon Hamm), and consequentially misses out on making a fortune when the company finds success.
David (who also served as the film's writer) joined director Greg Mottola at the Television Critics Association Summer 2013 press tour to discuss the project, which also stars Bill Hader, Philip Baker Hall, Kate Hudson, Michael Keaton, Danny McBride, Eva Mendes, Amy Ryan and J.B. Smoove.
When asked whether he's ever come close to making a billion-dollar mistake -- like threatening to quit "Seinfeld" -- David pointed out, "That wasn't a threat -- I did quit! HBO have released a teaser trailer for the upcoming Clear History, a film starring and co-written by Larry David and directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad). In it, the usually balding and clean-shaven creator of Curb Your Enthusiasm is given a full head of flowing locks and a giant beard, driving an open-topped sports car and singing along to some classic rock.
Entertainment Weekly revealed that the film will also star Jon Hamm, Bill Hader, Kate Hudson, Eva Mendes, Danny McBride, and Michael Keaton, and will stick to Larry David’s signature style of improvised dialogue over a structured story. Most excitingly of all, J.B. Smoove will also be joining the cast – his chemistry on Curb Your Enthusiasm was electric, and he can always be depended-upon to make a good scene great.

With the turn of a new year, the uncomfortably futuristic sounding 2013, comes twelve more months of cinematic gold, silver and bronzed offal. There will be Supermen, more Hollywood remakes of cult Korean cinema, at least one memorable meltdown and the continuation of Marvel’s epic campaign of terror against bewildered audiences. But amidst the blockbuster A-list and populist spotlight of public consciousness smaller things will be occurring, whirling cogs that are put in motion purely to make sure I get what I want. These are the things we want to see happen in film this year.

Larry David's working on a new, improv-heavy movie for HBO (that will costar Jon Hamm), but what's it about? According to the La Times, the untitled film casts David as a man who gives up his shares in an electric car inventor's project and then stews on his missed opportunity when the car becomes a huge hit and makes the inventor rich. That may sound a bit like Sour Grapes, the 1998 film David wrote and directed where Steven Weber loans Craig Bierko two coins for a slot machine and then stews on his missed opportunity when Bierko hits the jackpot, making him rich. The moral of this story: If you suddenly come into money, maybe wait a little while to tell Larry David.

A star-studded Larry David movie could be coming to HBO. The premium-cable network has acquired the rights to a film project from the "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" creator that stars David, Jon Hamm and Michael Keaton, according to an exclusive report from the L.A. Times' Steven Zeitchik.
The project was originally going to be released in theaters by Fox Searchlight. But Searchlight was "unprepared to match HBO's budget ceiling." Although Zeitchik cautions "deals are not done," he reports that talks between HBO and David are underway that will "probably" end in an agreement.
The TV-movie could be a great move for "Mad Men" star Hamm, who's spent the last few years making a bevy of cameos in comedies ranging from "Bridesmaids" and "Saturday Night Live" to "30 Rock" and Funny or Die videos. The prospect of him as a vehicle for Larry David dialogue could be hilarious.

The last feature film that Larry David wrote was Sour Grapes. The 1998 comedy, also directed by David, starred Steven Weber and Craig Bierko and although it put them in a very Curb Your Enthusiasm type situation--one cousin wins big on a slot machine with a coin borrowed from the other --it just didn.t have the same effect without David in front of the camera. Or, maybe the film fell flat because he was also the man behind it and the comedian doesn.t exactly have a track record of directing, having never even helmed an episode of either Curb Your Enthusiasm or Seinfeld, which he helped create back in the day. For his next big screen project, still untitled, he's fixing both things by not just starring in it but also by hiring Adventureland.s Greg Mottola to direct. Seinfeld creator and Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David has had a tremendous impact on television comedy over the past twenty years or so, and even though he has already conquered that world, he still keeps coming back for more seasons of Curb. There is, however, one area where success has eluded him after all these years, and that is on the big screen. Aside from a handful of small cameos (most recently in The Three Stooges), he has only had one major starring role thus far: the Woody Allen dud Whatever Works. He also wrote and directed the 1998 comedy Sour Grapes, which also failed both critically and commercially. Based on that experience, it's no wonder he has shied away from film, but the good news is that it looks like Ld is about to give the movie biz one more shot. Let's just hope that the third time's the charm.

Curb Your Enthusiam To Fix Middle Eastern Conflict?
In what could quite possible be either the greatest decision ever made, or the stupidest, a season 8 episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm could be shown to Israeli officials to ease the Middle-Eastern conflict.
Visionary lawyer Alan Dershowitz told the Columbia Current that he has sent the episode "Palestinian Chicken" to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with the hope that he might “invite [Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas] over to watch it together. And maybe if they both get a good laugh, they can begin a negotiating process.”
If Dershowitz were to succeed would that mean that Larry David would receive an assist for the Nobel Peace Prize this year? And who better to finally resolve the conflict than the writer of Sour Grapes?
Maybe if the talks start to go stale, Suzie Greene can head over and shout abuse in their ears until they start acting nice to each other again.

Earlier today, reports surfaced that former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi had been captured and killed by rebel forces. And since its never too early to consider the political impact of any big news, let's first take a look at Senator Marco Rubio (R-fl), who appeared on Fox News this morning and seemed to give more credit to French and British-led Nato forces over anything accomplished by U.S. forces, or the Obama administration. Sour grapes, or just politics as usual?...

If you missed last week's episode of Survivor: South Pacific, catch up with my recap here.
This week's installment begins at Redemption Island where Stacey arrives and wakes up Christine. Stacey tells Christine that Coach is running things at Upolu. She thinks Coach is acting "holier than thou," but he will receive his comeuppance soon because when Stacey has the chance, she is going to spill the beans on Coach and his alliance.
The next morning at Upolu, Brandon notifies the tribe that Tree Mail has arrived. He complains to the camera that Mikayla said she didn't like him because he's a Hantz. He protests that he doesn't care what people think about him...but his tears betray his true feelings. Albert and Mikayla go to the Ri Arena, as do Dawn and Whitney. Stacey tells Savaii that "Benjamin" is running the tribe, and that they are a bunch of liars.

Tonight on "Survivor: South Pacific," we have one of those disgusting (and by "disgusting," we mean "awesome") challenges where the contestants have to gnaw on a pig carcass and spit what they can onto a scale. Excellent.
Post-Tribal
Stacey and Christine bond at Redemption Island. Stacey is pretty mad about being voted off and she should be - she was Not the weakest person on that tribe. She is completely ready to jump ship should she get to go back into the game.
Meanwhile, Brandon is hurt because everybody hates that he's a Hantz. I'm with him on this one - he's a weird little dude, but it's terrible to hate someone because of who their uncle is. That's silly.
Redemption Island
Albert/Mikayla go for Upolu, Dawn/Whitney go for Savaii. Christine and Stacey spill some beans about their dysfunctional tribe. They also keep calling Coach by his real name,...
