There are only a handful of actors who have achieved the level of stardom and critical acclaim as Tom Hanks. Over four decades in Hollywood, he’s worked with a roster of renowned directors like Wes Anderson, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Baz Luhrmann, building a filmography rich in variety and range. Known for beloved classics such as Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and Toy Story, Hanks’ body of work has left a profound impact on audiences worldwide.
However, even for an icon like Hanks, not every film has been a hit. Alongside his masterpieces are a few titles he might prefer to leave forgotten. Whether due to lackluster performances, disappointing box office numbers, or poor critical reception, these movies simply didn’t live up to the Hanks standard.
From early missteps to recent experiments gone wrong, here are five Tom Hanks movies that didn’t quite make the grade.

Angelina Jolie is mostly known as a highly profitable action star, especially for her run in the early 2000s. Even at the height of her stardom, her projects were plagued with poor reviews.
Her 2002 rom-com Life or Something Like It was no exception. Even though it premiered three years after her Oscar for 1999's Girl, Interrupted, and in the midst of her Tomb Raider fame, the rom-com was a major critical and commercial failure. However, many projects get an afterlife on streaming, and Tudum reports Jolie's Life or Something Like It was a major hit on Netflix following its debut on streaming.
For the week between Apr. 14 and 20, Life or Something Like It debuted in third place in the global charts. The rom-com received encouraging numbers, with 5.5 million views and 9.6 million hours viewed.

After discussing the 30 greatest war films of all time, we decided to keep the patriotic momentum going with another article based on a similar theme: The 15 best military movies. What's the difference? A war film such as "Saving Private Ryan" focuses on larger-scale historical or fictional conflicts, while a military picture centers on individual soldiers, operations, and specific missions, mostly set in the modern era. Often, these stories take a critical look at contemporary warfare and the dubious nature of many top-secret operations, political or otherwise.
Several pictures on this list are more personal in their approach to the controversial subject matter, allowing us to see the military's effects on the people pulling the trigger. Others blend sharp geopolitical commentary with edge-of-your-seat thrills. All are worth your attention and offer a captivating window into the lives of the men and women who serve. Get ready for a hefty dose of grit,...

The Academy Awards are the grandest of honors that an artist can achieve, but they are not free from controversy. Especially this year, the backlash against the Academy was incredibly fierce, with several unnamed voters stating they won’t be voting for a particular film since they hadn’t seen it.
Well, the Academy is about to change for good, given its adoption of a whole new voting system. As the entertainment industry gears up for this change, we can’t help but think about what many still consider the greatest upset in history: Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan losing to Harvey Weinstein’s Shakespeare in Love.

The year was 2002. George W. Bush was talking about “weapons of mass destruction,” Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man was swinging into theaters, and PC gamers were about to experience a revolution disguised as a World War II shooter.
Behind this revolution stood an unlikely figure: Hollywood director Steven Spielberg. Fresh off the success of his Oscar-winning war epic Saving Private Ryan, Spielberg wasn’t content with just dominating the silver screen—he wanted to change how we experienced interactive entertainment too.
What followed was Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, a game that didn’t just raise the bar for first-person shooters—it completely rewrote the rulebook. Its DNA now flows through virtually every military shooter you’ve played in the last two decades, creating a legacy that continues to shape gaming in 2025.

Plot: The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a savagely beautiful five-part series charting the life of Dorrigo Evans, through his passionate love affair with Amy Mulvaney, his time held captive in a Pow camp, and his later years spent as a revered surgeon and reluctant war hero. An intimate character study of a complex man, a compelling portrayal of the courage and cruelty of war, and an unforgettable love story that sustains one through the darkest of times.
Review: War is hell, and I do not think a film or television series has ever deviated from that sentiment. While the horrors of battle and conflict have been central to screen productions for a century, some filmmakers still manage to find new ways to give us a glimpse of what it is like for the enlisted who have served throughout history. Co-directors Alex Garland and former US Navy Seal Ray Mendoza recreate a 2006 battle with almost unbearable intensity – and a dazzling ensemble cast
It’s up there with the first 23 bruising minutes of Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan or Elem Klimov’s harrowing and relentless Come and See. This is film-making that doesn’t just show you the horrors of war; it forces you to taste the dust and the choking panic, smell the fear and the cordite and the tinny metallic tang of spilled blood. Warfare, by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, is the most forceful and unflinching depiction of combat since Edward Berger’s 2023 Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front. It’s also one of the boldest and most formally daring.

Veterans of the armed services who are interested in checking out the new film Warfare will be able to see it on the big screen at a reduced cost. The film, which follows a platoon of U.S. Navy SEALs on a surveillance mission gone wrong during the war in Iraq in 2006, has sold itself on its accuracy in the presentation of combat. The film is co-directed by Civil War's Alex Garland, but its lead director is first-time filmmaker and veteran Ray Mendoza, whose own experience serves as the basis for the film.

Wyatt Russell’s career has recently taken off largely thanks to his role as John Walker in the MCU, but he’s attached to star in another upcoming project that could change his life. Russell is one of the many big names who have been set for a role in Steven Spielberg’s currently untitled event film, which will be released on June 12, 2026. Very little is known about the film at this time other than that Spielberg will direct and co-write the script with David Koepp, and other names to star include Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson. During a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub to promote his upcoming film, Broke, Russell was asked about what it was like working with Spielberg, and he didn’t hesitate to sing his praises:
"Working with Steven Spielberg is what everybody says it is. It's a dream.

The HBO limited series "Band of Brothers" was the most expensive television miniseries at the time, recreating the American military unit Easy Company's European activities during World War II. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the series provided an expansive and factually grounded account of American combat involvement in Western Europe during the war. Like Spielberg and Hanks' previous collaboration, the award-winning "Saving Private Ryan," "Band of Brothers" was praised for its stellar cast, realistic action, and expert attention towards historical authenticity. The series still sets the bar of quality for military shows, of any conflict, though there are a number of similar shows fans should check out next.

Marvin Levy, who spent five-plus decades handling public relations for Steven Spielberg and his films en route to becoming the only publicist to receive an Oscar, died Monday, an Amblin representative announced. He was 96.
Levy worked for MGM in New York and for Columbia Pictures in Hollywood, where he began his relationship with Spielberg on Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). The soft-spoken executive became a “Spielberg Whisperer,” offering counsel to the filmmaker.
In introducing Levy at the Governors Awards in November 2018, Tom Hanks noted that the publicist also advised Spielberg on films including E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), best picture winner Schindler’s List (1993), Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Lincoln (2012).
“Now, all those movies are pretty damn good, but I don’t think any of us in this room would have bothered seeing them without the efforts of Marvin Levy,” a cheeky Hanks said before the publicist came to the stage to accept his Oscar.

“Marvin’s passing is a huge loss for me and our industry writ large. Spielberg continued, “To the media-and the world of exhibition, Marvin was the face of Amblin. We were opposite ends of the movie-making process. Every time I reached the end of production on a film, Marvin’s work had only begun. Through countless films, tv series, Amblin events, awards campaigns and our public relations strategy—this is where Marvin came alive.

Sometimes, the world’s greatest treasures are unearthed from the deepest pits of chaos. Val Kilmer’s Tombstone, the iconic Western, almost slipped through the cracks of Hollywood history, buried under a mountain of production hurdles. It’s a miracle it ever made it to the big screen—let alone become one of the most revered Westerns ever.
But what if we told you that Kilmer’s unforgettable portrayal of Doc Holliday, which is often lauded as one of his best performances, was almost never realized? Yeah, the movie nearly fell apart, and Kevin Costner—of all people—played a crucial role in that stormy tale.
Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer in Tombstone | Hollywood Pictures
From director chaos to rival studios throwing elbows, Tombstone had more drama behind the scenes than on-screen shootouts. Yet, like a good ol’ Western hero, the cast and crew fought tooth and nail to get the film finished.

When Steven Spielberg lends his name to anything, expectations are immediately juiced. Any new project from the man who brought us transporting blockbusters like "Jaws," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," and "Jurassic Park" carries with it the promise of the extraordinary. When he's directing, that promise is almost always fulfilled. When he's producing movies, his batting average is very respectable. As for television, that's a bit of a crapshoot.
Spielberg actually got his professional start by directing episodes of "Night Gallery" and "Marcus Welby, M.D.," before breaking through with the brilliantly directed TV movie "Duel" (which was so good it received a theatrical release). The first show he created for television, "Amazing Stories," was a mixed bag. You expect a bit of inconsistency from an anthology series, but there seemed to be a ceiling to how good an "Amazing Stories" episode could be.

Steven Spielberg is one of the most iconic film directors, entertaining multiple generations through many different types of films. His first big success was the film Jaws, which revolutionized the summer blockbuster era in Hollywood. Spielberg eventually ventured into other genres, creating some of the best adventure, science fiction, and war films.
Spielberg is often recognized for his extravagant films like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, which showcase his diverse filmography. However, Spielberg isn't just a director. Known mostly for the films he made throughout his long career, many people do not know that Spielberg was a producer on many iconic films.

Matt Damon’s formula for picking projects has always left old pal Ben Affleck in awe. As you may know, there is this upcoming Christopher Nolan project that the who’s who in Hollywood are all being gathered for.
Think Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and so on and so forth.
However, the main person to take up the titular role is Matt Damon. See what his bestie Affleck has to say about it.
Ben Affleck Speaks Candidly On Christopher Nolan’s Upcoming Project, ‘Odyssey’
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s career was blown out of the waters when they both starred in the 1997 movie, ‘Good Will Hunting,’ which won an Oscar by the way.
In the light of that initial fame surge, Affleck decided to lean into action blockbusters like ‘Armageddon,’ and even superhero movies like ‘Daredevil’ and ‘Batman’ and generally did big studio productions.

War movies turn a lot of us into armchair warriors. We’ve seen the great ones, like “Saving Private Ryan” and “Full Metal Jacket” and “Apocalypse Now” and “The Hurt Locker” and “Platoon,” and every one of those films is so vivid and experiential that we may get swept up in the illusion that we now understand something essential about war. But if you’ve ever been close to someone who’s been in a war, the first thing you know is that you know nothing about it. Literally nothing. The chaos and terror, the spiritual and physical loyalty that soldiers feel toward each other, the unspeakable horror, the insane thrill of it — these are things that movies show us a mere shadow of, things that as civilians we can’t know.
Yet there are filmmakers who fall prey to the illusion too. When “Apocalypse Now” was coming out, Francis Ford Coppola,...

The legendary Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami once wryly remarked that he prefers “the films that put their audience to sleep in the theater.” Frequently taken out of context, Kiarostami’s statement was part of a larger rant against what he saw as a certain scourge in Western filmmaking, that of the blockbuster which takes its audience “hostage,” overwhelming with bombastic aestheticism that nails you to your seat but leaves you feeling empty.
Kiarostami might’ve had a word or two to say about Alex Garland, whose latest vision of American dystopia is uncharacteristically situated in our real-life and immediate past. Warfare is set during one day in November of 2006, when a Navy SEALs outfit was suddenly faced with an evacuation straight out of hell’s gate. Though the film is meticulously based on first-hand accounts from survivors of the mission, it is incuriously unspecific, as generic and as politically inscrutable as its title is nebulous.

Tom Cruise Owes Tom Hanks (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)
Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks are two of Hollywood’s biggest stars. But beyond their first names and A-list status, they couldn’t be more different. Hanks built his career on heartfelt dramas and feel-good roles.
He won back-to-back Oscars and became ‘America’s Dad.’ Cruise, on the other hand, took the action route. He became Hollywood’s biggest daredevil, pulling off jaw-dropping stunts even in his 60s. But once upon a time, Hanks almost landed a role that Cruise made iconic. And he still thinks Cruise owes him for it—literally.
In the mid-’90s, director Cameron Crowe was working on Jerry Maguire. He initially foresaw Hanks as the lead. But by the time the project got rolling, Hanks had outgrown the role. Cruise stepped in, and the rest is history. Hanks, meanwhile, focused on his directorial debut, That Thing You Do!...

There’s something heartwarming about the enduring friendship between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The pair started out together, and they still seem to be as close as ever. While speaking with GQ, Affleck explained how their careers began to take different paths when Damon started picking his projects based on the director.
“Matt learned and knew earlier than I did to really key in on the director as the fundamental basis on which he’s going to make a decision whether to do a movie or not, which was a very wise choice,” Affleck said. “And also he has certainly had opportunities to do movies that like—it’s not like I was saying, ‘No, Scorsese, no, Spielberg, I’m not going to be in your movie.’ We’re in situations of our opportunities, and we’re subject to that.“
Affleck continued, “I would’ve taken Saving Private Ryan.

Paul Giamatti recently teased just how evil his character will be in the upcoming Paramount+ series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The series will document a new class of Starfleet cadets training to become officers.
Speaking with Collider about Starfleet Academy, Giamatti revealed that his character revels in his evil deeds. "He takes great pleasure in being the villain. He likes it. And it's very much a part of his thing that he's all, 'Oh yeah, I'm the bad guy,'" he said. Not much is known about Giamatti's role in Starfleet Academy other than he is a recurring character with a dark past connected to one of the cadets.
The first season of Starfleet Academy recently entered post-production, and a second season is already in development. Giamatti went on to talk about how the series reminds him of more classic entries in the Star Trek franchise. "To my mind, it feels very,...

Ben Affleck said in an interview with GQ magazine that his acting career started to differ from that of friend Matt Damon’s after Damon made the “wise choice” early on to pick projects based on the movie’s director.
After 1997’s “Good Will Hunting” won them the Oscar for original screenplay, Damon joined forces with the likes of Steven Spielberg (“Saving Private Ryan”), Anthony Minghella (“Talented Mr. Ripley”), Robert Redford (“The Legend of Bagger Vance”), Steven Soderbergh (“Ocean’s Eleven”) and more. Affleck, meanwhile, leaned into action blockbusters like “Armageddon” and big studio fare such as “Pearl Harbor,” “Daredevil” and more.

At 2025's 97th Academy Awards ceremony, 10 films vied to win Best Picture. However, the Oscars have not always included this many in the lineup. In fact, less than 30 years ago, there were only five nominees in the category. And the one that came away victorious in the 71st Academy Awards continues to be a controversial pick.
To some, Shakespeare in Love was an unexpected hit when it was released in 1998. Starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow (also named Best Actress), it excelled as a period drama and a fun historical reimagining. While some moviegoers continue to believe it did not earn its win, further reflection indicates that the Academy did, in fact, make the right decision.

Shifting Gears star Tim Allen has shared a delightful exchange between him and his Toy Story co-star, Tom Hanks, on social media. Allen and Hanks first teamed up 30 years ago for Toy Story (1995), the animated adventure film that was not only nominated for three Oscars, but also grossed over $390 million at the global box office against a $30 million budget. The two have since worked together on every Toy Story movie, even as recently as Toy Story 4 in 2019, which grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Allen posted two photos on his personal X account, one Hanks sent him of him standing behind the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz, and another that he replied to his co-star, recreating his picture.
While their roles in the Toy Story franchise remain some of the most important in both of their careers, Tim Allen and Tom Hanks have both gone on to accomplish great things as actors.

Lost amid Gene Hackman's prolific back catalog of films was a bevy of blockbusters. One of his forgotten roles was in the 2001 pseudo-docudrama, Behind Enemy Lines, directed by John Moore. Relegated to basic cable rotation as yet another gung-ho war flick, it has long been overshadowed by The Royal Tenenbaums, which debuted within a month of this movie and also starred Owen Wilson and Hackman. We say pseudo-docudrama, as the film stops short of fully invoking the names or precise details of the true parties involved.

Earning more than one Academy Award during a career is a surprising rarity for actors. Katharine Hepburn holds the record of four Oscars, while the rare feat of winning three rests with Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day-Lewis, Walter Brennan, Meryl Streep, Ingrid Bergman, and Frances McDormand. For filmmakers themselves, it is a bit of a different metric, as the ones behind the camera push all aspects of the production. A win for a film is often attributed, in part, to their work.
Steven Spielberg's work has been monumental in defining the modern face of cinema, and the success of his films at the Academy Awards reflects this unparalleled career over five decades, starting when Jaws became his first film to win an Oscar. Fifty years of excellence seem challenging to beat, yet one director's films won more Oscars within four decades: William Wyler. Let's compare the impressive records of the two cinema titans.

When film critics hold forth on war films that purport to deliver a realistic treatment of combat, they are most likely talking out of their hat. Most of my colleagues, including me, have never served in the military, and, thus, haven't the slightest clue as to what it feels like to have bullets whizzing by your head while ordinance explodes in your vicinity. Heck, many people who serve in the military don't get that experience.
So when it comes to determining what's realistic and what's Hollywood, all you can do is consult someone who's been in it. I've done this throughout my career as a critic, and the titles I hear most frequently as being the most realistic are probably "The Battle of Algiers," "Come and See," "Saving Private Ryan," "Das Boot," "Hamburger Hill," and "Black Hawk Down." And while François Truffaut once asserted that there's no such thing as an anti-war movie,...

The US military has been the focus of some of Hollywood's best movies, from naval aviators in Top Gun to special forces in projects like Delta Force and Executive Decision. One of the US' most prestigious units, the Navy SEALs, has been the focus of a variety of films and TV shows, exploring everything from life in the forces to combat missions. While the former can be interesting, it's the thick of battle that audiences love to see.
Navy SEALs remain one of Hollywood's favorite military units, and for good reason. From the rescue of Captain Phillips to the assassination of Osama bin Laden, they're effectively the face of America's elite heroes. While the movie business takes different angles with its exploration of them, the best ones go hard on the action. Whether it's a true story or a hard-hitting action movie, focusing on these elite soldiers rarely fails to impress.

Every generation or so, filmmakers endeavor to bring audiences into the nightmarish experience of armed conflict, and a new standard is set in the process; that is precisely what Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza have done with Warfare. But before jumping into the sound recording booth to bring the mythical Greek demigod to life, Donovan donned an aviator jacket and climbed into the cockpit of a B-17 Flying Fortress in the 1990 film Memphis Belle. The film depicts the experiences of American bombardment squadrons in World War II, following the crew of the Memphis Belle on their last mission flying into Germany.
Tate Donovan plays 1st Lt. Luke Sinclair in Memphis Belle. Sinclair is the co-pilot of the Memphis Belle, and second in command to Captain Dennis Dearborn, played by Matthew Modine. A former lifeguard who dreams of Hollywood fame, Sinclair often butts heads with Dearborn, wishing he could take over command. Sinclair is desperate for the chance to shoot down a German plane, so he can have a heroic war...

No other war captures the imaginations of film directors like World War 2. It's an easy war to romanticize with stories of heroism, high-stakes political drama, and colossal aerial battles. It's important to note that war is more grueling and complex than most movies would show, and a few special World War 2 films focus on showing the harsh reality of the war.
Realistic World War 2 movies can focus on both powerful, famous figures or the everyday person. Some of these films are based on real feats so shocking one would think they were fictional, while others are made-up narratives filmed in a way that makes them feel lifelike. Nothing captures the human condition as well as an accurate World War 2 movie.
Letters From Iwo Jima Shows a New Perspective
To say that it is rare for a Hollywood movie to take the perspective of the Japanese during World War II is a serious understatement.

Best Actor Oscar Winners List (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)
The Academy Awards have long vaunted acting titans, and a rare few male actors have commandeered the Best Actor statuette more than once, with Daniel Day-Lewis scaling the peak thrice. From living legends like Tom Hanks to recent winners such as Adrien Brody, 10 men are trailing Day-Lewis’ record. Here is every name with two or more wins in this hallowed category.
1. Daniel Day-Lewis
Sir Daniel Day-Lewis stands alone with three Best Actor Oscars, a feat no other man has matched. His wins were facilitated thanks to dramatic transformations for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln—roles that exhibit him as an unforgettable chameleon. The Irish actor has retired since 2017’s Phantom Thread, but his five nominations out of fewer than a couple dozen movies certainly make us wonder whether Day-Lewis could come back for that gold once again...

To say that Clint Eastwood is one of the most influential Hollywood stars and directors of all time would undersell the contributions of the star. From Westerns like Hang 'Em High to war movies like Kelly's Heroes, the star has been a symbol of American masculinity and stoic heroism since the 1960s. Looking at his most iconic characters and best films, it's not hard to see why multiple generations looked up to him as a genuine movie legend.
Clint Eastwood's career has seen him take on a variety of genres, but it's hard to deny his Western and action-thriller movies are his most iconic. Whether behind the camera or on the big screen, his films have given audiences a long line of hard-boiled heroes, skilled detectives and grizzled gunslingers. Ranging across genres, he has too many brilliant movies to count, but some are as close to perfect as it gets.
