Let's get something straight: Godzilla, Marvel, and that tough guy who drinks martinis only have some of the most extensive cinematic universes because J.R.R. Tolkien's material has been taking the scenic route to the screen. The journey to shepherd and destroy the One Ring in the fiery pits of Mordor took three books and three movies to tell, and Peter Jackson told it well in the early aughts with "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers," and "The Return of the King." But what if I told you (and what if you didn't pay attention...

Gary Whitta has been knocking about Hollywood for many years, having received his first screenwriting credit for "The Book of Eli," the 2010 Hughes Brothers film starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. Whitta co-wrote "After Earth" with M. Night Shyamalan, helped conceive the plot for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," and wrote several episodes of the "Star Wars: Rebels" TV series. Beyond that, he has co-written or served as a story consultant for video games in the "Walking Dead" and "Halo" franchises, and he's authored books and served as the editor-in-chief of PC Gamer magazine.

Get ready for shellshock! It’s the Zombeavers meets Godzilla versus Attack Of The Crab Monsters hybrid you always craved in the creature feature comedy horror of the year. Mutated by nuclear runoff a horde of murderous horseshoe crabs descend on a sleepy California town causing Prom Night terror. As the deadly crustaceans claw their way through the disbelieving population, it’s up to a ramshackle band of students and police to address the increasingly ginormous crab menace in a love letter to such practical effects horrors as Gremlins and nostalgic Roger Corman classics. Let's start our week off with a healthy dose of indie creature feature, shall we? Our friends at Raven Banner Entertainment have released the first trailer for Pierce Berolzheimer's debut feature film...

"The top of the primordial ecosystem. A god." The modern era of Godzilla began with Gareth Edwards' epic Godzilla, originally released in 2014 by Warner Bros. This was two full years before Japan responded with their own Shin Godzilla movie. This Godzilla also introduced an in-universe "secret scientific organization" called Monarch. The history of this organization is shown in the intro and discussed throughout this movie and its sequels. A design company called Prologue Films has released the clean version of their Godzilla montage and introduction to Monarch, that was re-worked into the opening credits for the Godzilla movie. There's an extra unseen shot or two in here, but most of all it's just cool to see the original version of this in full detail. There's so many historical bits and fun teases worked into this video - fire it up below and enjoy. Thanks to Twitter for the tip on this.

“Everyone in the room knew immediately: This is special.”
Hamilton star Anthony Ramos is talking about that room where it happened. From workshop presentations at The Public to sold-out crowds at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theater, Ramos was part of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical phenomenon from the beginning in 2014, playing John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton’s son Philip for over two years. “We knew we were about to be a part of something that was going to change all of our lives,” Ramos tells Et.
Now, like other stars from the original cast, Ramos is seeing his life change dramatically as his career reaches new heights. This year, the 26-year-old actor and musician landed his first starring role on TV, working with filmmaker Spike Lee, no less, playing Mars Blackmon on the Netflix TV adaptation of She’s Gotta Have It, based on Lee’s debut 1988 film about a polyamorous woman artist living in Brooklyn. Despite sounding like a weekday afternoon SyFy film, Geostorm comes tearing into cinemas and while hopes were not particularly high, I was at least anticipating a fun slice of natural disaster movie mayhem. Shockingly not directed by master of disaster Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012), this film instead comes from Independence Day and Godzilla (1998) co-writer Dean Devlin. Unfortunately the end result is less knowing than any of the aforementioned and is a disaster in all the wrong ways.
Look, nobody was expecting Birdman here, or a deeply layered look at the impact of global warming, we were expecting a Gerard Butler led romp that was preposterous but hopefully fun with it. However, what I never expected in a million years was to be criticising Geostorm for not having enough extreme weather action scenes! Practically all of the films money shots have filled out the trailers and TV spots,...

Lots of people don’t like the Inspector Gadget movie. Released in 1999, Disney certainly had high hopes for it, earmarking it as a key blockbuster for that year. Tellingly, though, Rupert Everett would not inaccurately describe the film as “the $100m mess” in his memoir, Red Carpets And Other Banana Skins.
He went further. Talking about the elongated days of shooting on the movie, he wrote that “behind the scenes lurked a panel of executives, each with their own theory and agenda. A string of writers had written version after version, each adding to our scripts on a different-coloured paper, each one losing the plot a little bit more, so that by the end, or rather the beginning, they had managed between them to render...

The Mummy seemed like a cash grab from the moment it was announced. Universal has been trying to launch a universe of their own, featuring classic movie monsters associated with the studio, including Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and the Invisible Man, for years. The Mummy is essentially the studio going "all in" to jump start what is now called Dark Universe. Casting a star as large as Tom Cruise initially read as an attempt to make up for shortcomings in other areas. When you don't have much else, attach the biggest movie star in the world, and your film will sell (maybe)! Additionally, though the first movie came out in 1999, the Brendan Fraser lead Mummy franchise is still fresh enough in the public's mind that starting a new universe with The Mummy seemed like a strange choice. So, is The Mummy just another ill-advised attempt to launch a universe, cashing in...

Hollywood agents flew into a panic after confusing their client — adorable 13-year-old “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown — for controversial “vomit artist” Millie Brown.
The 13-year-old’s reps got wind that Millie Brown — who once puked on Lady Gaga in the name of culture — would be covering her body in multicolored wax at a Tumblr event during Made fashion week in La in order to “become a human candle.”
Erroneously believing it was their client, we’re told that the young actress’ frantic agents contacted the festival to explain that, while they didn’t want to diminish the teen’s artistic expression, she couldn’t go through with the performance because she would be on the set of “Godzilla” in Atlanta.

Indie horror wunderkind Adam Wingard has signed on to direct the next blockbuster in Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s growing monster franchise, “Godzilla Vs. Kong.”
Quite prolific at 34-years-old, Wingard cut his teeth on micro-budget horrors “Pop Skull” and “A Horrible Way to Die,” often working with indie mainstay Joe Swanberg. His more recent film, “The Guest,” starred Dan Stevens and premiered at Sundance in 2014. He has been moving into bigger budget indies with his last two projects, a 2016 follow-up to “Blair Witch,” and “Death Note,” a manga adaptation set for an August release.

We like to imagine Hollywood as a precision machine, with every million-dollar decision motivated by an enlightened blend of business savvy and artistic intent, while auteurs and producers battle it out in the honest assumption that their conflicts will create masterpieces of commercial cinema. The truth, of course, is a little more blurry, as we were reminded this week via a column from prolific screenwriter Terry Rossio.
Rossio—whose credits include Shrek, the 1998 Godzilla, and a host of Disney films, including Aladdin and most of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise—revealed that his version of the script for the upcoming Pirates sequel, Dead Men Tell No Tales, featured a female villain, but the character was nixed by star Johnny Depp. Why didn’t Depp want to face off against a powerful female adversary? Long live Michael Laughlin. Two years after he released one of my favorite early ‘80s oddities, Strange Behavior (I wrote about it here), he was back to unleash the next chapter in a proposed ‘Strange’ trilogy, Strange Invaders (1983). And while the former is a tribute to Mad Scientist films of the ‘50s via an updated Slasher take, the latter tips its fedora to the great Alien Invasion films of the same era. It may not reach the same dizzyingly weird heights, but Strange Invaders is an affectionate romp that captures the feel of those bygone drive-in classics and solidifies Laughlin’s unique voice.
A co-production between Emi Films and Lone Wolf McQuade Associates, Strange Invaders was released by Orion Pictures in mid September stateside to positive reviews and lackluster box office. With the Wonder Woman live action movie set to arrive in theaters in just over two months, it’s understandable that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment will want to put out as much merchandise bearing the likeness of the Amazon Princess as possible. One item in particular that’s worthy of attention is that of the forthcoming Wonder Woman: Commemorative Edition.
Truth be told, it’s technically not a new offering, but rather a repackaging of the amazing animated film originally released back in 2009. Unfortunately, no R-rated cut will be included as was previously reported. Despite any second guessing you may have, do know that one exists out there somewhere, as the filmmakers have admitted they had to make some alterations in order to get the PG-13 rating because, at the time, WB didn’t afford as much leeway with mature content as they do now.

DC. Marvel. Industry giants, yet not the only names in comics. Not by a long shot.
Valiant is one such company that has been around for quite a while, founded in 1989 by former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Jim Shooter and Steven Massarsky. Like the two industry leaders, we have the Valiant Universe including such titles as X-o Manowar, Harbinger, and Shadowman. Valiant already has a five-picture deal with Sony to bring the Valiant Universe to life, including movie versions of Bloodshot and Harbinger, leading to an Avengers style event in Harbinger Wars.
Heat Vision has learned that now that Valiant is developing Archer & Armstrong in house before being shopped around to studios. The project certainly won't be a hard sell, considering the talent that just joined the film.
Archer & Armstrong has already secured Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) to direct a script from Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise). Rossio is also...

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is set to take on the big screen adaptation of Valiant Entertainment's action-comedy comic book Archer & Armstrong. I've never read the comic, but was published in 1992 and it was created by former Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, Wolverine: Weapon X writer and artist Barry Windsor-Smith, and comic book writer and artist Bob Layton, who is best know for his work on Marvel Comics titles such as Iron Man and Hercules.
I've heard a lot of great things about this comic series, and it seems like it would make for a great film. If you're not familiar with it, here's an official plot description:
After years of meditation and training, 18-year-old Obadiah Archer has been dispatched to New York City to carry out the sacred mission of his family’s sect – locate and kill the fun-loving, hard-drinking immortal known as Armstrong! But as this naive teenage assassin stalks his prey,...

King Kong might end up ruling the weekend thanks to “Kong: Skull Island”, which looks set to dominate all competition. But how does the giant ape stack up against other oversized creature feature creatures? Read on to find out. These are the movies that stand tall as the kings of the monsters, as determined by domestic box office. Note: All figures are from Comscore and Box Office Mojo, and are not adjusted for inflation. 10.) Godzilla (1998) $136M Domestic Roland Emmerich’s overhaul of Toho’s most famous kaiju was panned by critics, including Siskel and Ebert, whom Emmerich mocked with characters meant.

Movies are the new Television. Well, sort of. In recent years, in the midst of mass sequelization and the rise of long-running film franchises, it’s become commonplace to plan out your movies well in advance of their release. Perhaps best known for this is Marvel Studios. Following the success of Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’ve announced their slate of films beforehand in advance. The folks over at Paramount took this idea and escalated it to the next level, but announcing a writers room led by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman to map out the future of the Transformers franchise. Now, it sounds like the folks over at the MonsterVerse will be doing the same for the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie.

“Kong: Skull Island” is opening in theaters this Friday, March 10. But Legendary Entertainment is already gearing up for the next film in their MonsterVerse, “Godzilla vs. Kong.” As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has started assembling a writers’ room to brainstorm story ideas and beats for the next installment in the series of films featuring the giant super-species, which is eyeing a release date of May 29, 2020.

Just as Kong: Skull Island crashes into theaters, The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that Legendary is beginning to make serious headway on its main event, Godzilla Vs. Kong. A writers room has officially been established, with Lindsey Beer (The Kingkiller Chronicles) and Pirates of the Caribbean scribe Terry Rossio among those on board to canvas ideas.
Rossio will oversee the creative process, before a single writer will be elected to hash out a screenplay. THR notes that Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne (Star Trek Beyond, Star Trek 4), Cat Vasko (Queen of the Air), T.S. Nowlin (Pacific Rim: Uprising) and comic book scribe J. Michael Straczynski (World War Z, Sense8) have also signed on to pitch their story ideas into the proverbial hat.
Legendary’s decision to hatch a writers room shouldn’t be all that surprising – in fact, the idea was originally proposed back when Godzilla:...

After working closely with Roland Emmerich, producing Independence Day, Stargate, Godzilla, and more, producer Dean Devlin is in fitting territory with his directorial debut. Geostorm imagines a world where the climate is controlled by satellites, but things soon take a turn for the worse when technology goes awry, causing disaster across the globe.
The film, which will have begun shooting three years ago when it finally arrives this fall, reportedly recently had about $15 million worth of re-shoots under the direction of Judge Dredd helmer Danny Cannon and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Does it spell bad weather? Judging from the trailer, it looks to be VFX-heavy spectacle-driven adventure, but let’s just hope it’s not as brainless as Emmerich’s last film.
Starring Gerard Butler, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Lara, Jim Sturgess, Amr Waked, Ed Harris and Andy García, check out the teaser below.

Early on in the development of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island, writer-director Jordan Vogt-Roberts pitched the idea of setting said creature feature against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, at a time when napalm was the weapon of choice. Much to his surprise, the Powers That Be gave the go-ahead, allowing Vogt-Roberts to craft a monster movie dripping with a very particular, Apocalypse Now-esque aesthetic.
Situating Skull Island in the early ’70s also allowed the director to call upon some of the greatest and most iconic rock ballads of the era – Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Rolling Stones…you name it – but for whatever reason, the fourth and presumably final trailer comes packing a noisy and frankly off-putting score that doesn’t really jive with a Vietnam War pic involving a 100ft ape.
But beyond the questionable selection of music, we should warn you that the trailer above strays far into spoiler territory,...

Star Wars, Terminator 2, Fantastic Beasts and more: they all have scenes in the trailer, that never made the final film...
More often than you might think, scenes that appear in movie trailer don’t turn up in the finished film. This can leave trailer-loving audience members confused as the credits roll, wondering if they dropped off and missed something important.

A couple of massive movies have done this recently, and the internet has been quick to fill in the blanks with speculation. Fingers have been pointed at tinkering studio bigwigs and extensive reshoots, when the reality is often a little less dramatic: filmmakers always chop some footage in the edit, and they rarely have much involvement in the trailers.

Hitchcock/Truffaut (Kent Jones)
The world of cinematic discourse was a markedly place when François Truffaut interviewed Alfred Hitchcock Nowadays, high-profile filmmakers are talking about their craft whenever someone turns on a recorder, and few people doubt the greatness of this text’s main subject. This might explain why the decidedly old-fashioned degree to which Kent Jones’ documentary honors the book seems out-of-place. By now, fans around the world have learned to grow weary of video game adaptations. While there are plenty of reasons to think that Assassin's Creed is going to definitively break the curse or crappy movies based on video games, Brad Peyton thinks his Rampage is also going to bring the goods.
Peyton's flick, based on the classic Midway arcade game about giant monsters fighting and destroying cities, is going to reunite him with Dwayne Johnson. The two worked together on Journey 2 and San Andreas.
The director, who seems to want to challenge Roland Emmerich in the "Let's f**k shit up on a massive scale!" department, spoke to We Got This Covered about how he's approaching Rampage:
"With Rampage, we are using our love of the original game as our inspiration. Then we’re going to build a movie, like San Andreas, that is really going to surprise people in what it delivers.

As a writer and producer, Dean Devlin has had a hand in some of the highest profile projects of the last quarter of a century. Universal Soldier, Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla – all have been revisited repeatedly by Devlin and others, in numerous media. This is why – even though he is not the most prolific filmmaker – when he sets up a new property, people pay attention. We pay even more attention, when he casts an actor like David Tennant (Doctor Who, Jessica Jones), in a thriller like Bad Samaritan.
The script comes from Brandon Boyce, who previously wrote effective dramas Apt Pupil and Wicker Park. It centres on two young men working as car valets, who use their position to rob the homes of their customers. Inevitably, they eventually rob the wrong home, and face some unexpected consequences.
The first thing that is very clear about this movie is that it is about men.
