Bob Dylan’s Rough and Rowdy Ways tour hit Leonard Cohen’s hometown of Montreal on Sunday night, and he honored the late singer with a breathtaking performance of his 1984 classic “Dance Me to the End of Love.” Check out an audience recording right here.

One week after his unannounced appearance at Farm Aid, where he stunned the crowd by playing three 1965 classics with 3/5th of the Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan resumed his Rough and Rowdy Ways tour at the Midland Theater in Kansas City, Missouri. And even though he was back with his standard touring band, the surprises kept coming when he opened the show with Leiber and Stoller’s 1952 classic “Kansas City.”
It was the first time he’d played the song since a 1986 show with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Bonner Springs,...

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.
Here’s everything leaving Max in August 2023

Prior to a couple of months ago, Bob Dylan had only played covered four Grateful Dead songs (“Friend of the Devil,” “West L.A. Fadeaway,” “Alabama Getaway,” “Black Muddy River”) throughout his entire career as a live performer. He added two more into the mix (“Truckin'” and “Brokedown Palace”) during a Japanese leg of the Never Ending Tour in April, and during a stop in Barcelona, Spain on Friday night he broke out a beautiful rendition of “Stella Blue” from the Dead’s 1973 LP Wake of the Flood:

When Bob Dylan broke out the Grateful Dead’s ‘Truckin’ earlier this week at the Tokyo Garden Theater in Japan, it seemed like a one-off fluke. But then he followed it up at the next show by attempting their song “Brokedown Palace,” though he gave up midway through when he seemingly forgot the words. And then on Saturday, he trotted out another Dead staple, “Not Fade Away.”
“Not Fade Away” was written by Buddy Holly, but the Grateful Dead played it 566 times between 1969 and 1995. Dylan first covered the song in...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and filmmakers and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, Conor and I dish on our movie crushes. More specifically, the movie crush from my life as a young cinephile: Kate Beckinsale.
The B-Sides in the pipeline are: Laurel Canyon, Tiptoes, Nothing but the Truth, Whiteout, and Everybody’s Fine.
The sheer diversity of these five pictures cannot be overstated. Beckinsale, while known by most Americans for her role in the Underworld franchise, comes from a comedy lineage in the U.K., the daughter of sitcom legend Richard Beckinsale. Soon enough, period pieces like Much Ado About Nothing gave way to Hollywood dramas like Brokedown Palace and indie spotlights like The Last Days of Disco for Kate Beckinsale. And then… Pearl Harbor!

The Grateful Dead will mark the 50th anniversary of their American Beauty by releasing another “Angel’s Share,” a companion collection of never-before-heard demos, alternate mixes and outtakes from the LP, Number 215 on Rolling Stone‘s new list of the 500 Greatest Albums.
The October 15th arrival of American Beauty: The Angel’s Share follows the July 2020 release of Workingman’s Dead: The Angel’s Share which similarly excavated the band’s vaults from that 1970 album’s recording sessions. Both were released as a gift to fans separate from each album’s respective 50th-anniversary edition.

With so many streaming services to choose from, it can often be difficult to find the right one to spend your hard-earned dough on. That being said, Hulu has remained among the most exciting and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix, really cementing itself as one of the most appealing options out there in recent years thanks to its collection of original content and very, very deep library of licensed films.
Like every other streaming service, they bring us new titles every month and July is looking to be quite a good one. Especially if you’re a horror fan. Admittedly, Hulu has always been pretty reliable when it comes to this particular genre, and that’s a reputation they seem intent to keep, as next month will bring us the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Freddy vs. Jason, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, House of 1000 Corpses, The Ninth Gate, The House That Jack Built...

Perhaps the most exciting piece of content coming to Hulu in July 2020 is…a movie? Remember those? You would buy a ticket and then go sit in a dark room with other people eating Buncha Crunch. Sounds wild!
Yes, more and more feature films are turning to streaming services for their summer releases. And with their list of new offerings for July 2020, Hulu got itself a big fish. Palm Springs is a Groundhog Day-style comedy starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as star-crossed lovers forced to live the same day over and over again. It premieres on Hulu on July 10.
And that’s not the only original movie coming to Hulu in July. Romanian crime thriller The Whistlers premieres on July 2. Sasheer Zamata comedy The Weekend follows on July 15. Then Hulu caps the month off with the Julia Garner-starring The Assistant on July 20. There’s good movie news...

With so many streaming services available now, it can often be hard to pick the right one to spend your hard-earned money on. However, Hulu has remained among the most successful and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix and has only gotten better with age. Whereas it had very few worthwhile movies years ago, now it often has some of the best films you can find to watch, and they’re offered up alongside brand new episodes of shows from various major networks. Like every other streaming service, Hulu updates their content throughout each month, and July is looking to add quite a lot of good stuff.

Rupert Penry-Jones and Daniel Lapaine.
When Daniel Lapaine and Essie Davis were fellow students at Nida in the early 1990s, one less arduous element of the course was fencing lessons.
Neither could have imagined, all these years later, they would be jousting again in Every Cloud Productions’ Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears.
Lapaine plays rich aristocrat Lord “Lofty” Lofthouse, an old friend of Essie’s Phyrne Fisher, in the Tony Tilse-directed murder-mystery/adventure/romance, which opens on Thursday.
Phyrne and Shirin Abbas (2016 Vca graduate Isabella Yella), a young Bedouin girl whom she rescued from prison in Jerusalem, go to the UK to stay at the manor owned by Lord and Lady Lofthouse (Jacqueline McKenzie) and Lofty’s younger brother Jonathon (Rupert Penry-Jones).

Robert Hunter, the poet and writer who provided the Grateful Dead with many of their vivid and enduring lyrics, died Monday night. He was 78. No cause of death was provided.
“It is with great sadness we confirm our beloved Robert passed away yesterday night,” Hunter’s family announced in a statement. “He died peacefully at home in his bed, surrounded by love. His wife Maureen was by his side holding his hand. For his fans that have loved and supported him all these years, take comfort in knowing that his words are all around us,...

Maybe Hiss Golden Messenger said it best, in a tweet after Friday night’s tribute to Jerry Garcia at downtown Los Angeles’ Theatre at Ace Hotel (at which lead singer Mc Taylor was one of the performers): “Seeing Stephen Malkmus, Benmont Tench and David Hidalgo onstage together creates a hugely enjoyable cognitive dissonance.” In this particular Dead-related case, “cognitive dissonance” was not even intended as a synonym for tripping, but just the fun of seeing celebrity fans from different disciplines focus attention on some of Garcia’s under-celebrated sides. At the end of the three-hour show, you could even say: What a long trip of strange bedfellows it’s been.
The guest singers might have been the ones with their names on the souvenir poster, but the highlight of the night, for many, was a semi-reunion of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers or Mudcrutch, take your pick), with Tench, the...

While many may scoff when I say this, let me just go ahead and admit right here that I unabashedly love the Underworld movies, a series I once referred to as the “Lord of the Rings of Werewolf Movies.” The first Underworld came along right at the perfect time for me. I was still super into horror action cinema at the time (coming off films like Blade and The Matrix, whose influences were being felt industry-wide), and I just couldn’t think of anything cooler than watching werewolves and vampires kicking each other’s respective otherworldly asses.
Other than the films’ tendencies to sometimes take themselves just a little too seriously, I've always felt like the Underworld movies have unjustly received a bad wrap within the horror community and deserve far more love and respect than they ever get. From their commitment to creating intricate character-driven storytelling that has taken us through (now) five films,...

In part one of Rolling Stone‘s exclusive interview with Robert Hunter, the legendary (and fairly reclusive) Grateful Dead lyricist looked back on his early years with the band: meeting Jerry Garcia, signing on as the primary in-house poet and writing epic Dead songs from “Dark Star” through “Truckin’.” In this second and last part, Hunter, speaking at his home in Marin County, talks candidly about the rougher waters that followed. As becomes clear in the conversation, few in the Dead world were as affected by Garcia’s addiction issues as Hunter.

What's leaving Netflix in March? Well, the streaming service is expiring a slew of movies and TV shows, with a big chunk of the departing titles belonging to the Cartoon Network -- you'll see those say bye-bye at the end of the month. As for movies, the clock is ticking for favorites "Dumb and Dumber," "Fright Night," Desperado," "Seven," "Pretty in Pink," "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," and "The Muppet Movie," which will all be pulled in the monthly purge.
Here's the complete list of titles that will vanish from your streaming list (pending any sort of meddling time-travelers). And, just so you're not left empty-handed, here's a list of what's new on Netflix in March 2015.

Our continuing look back at some of the biggest summers we've lived through takes us back 15 years to one of the best recent movie seasons overall. In honor of the 2014 summer movie season, Team HitFix will be delivering a mini-series of articles flashing back to key summers from years past. There will be one each month, diving into the marquee events of the era, their impact on the writer and their implications on today's multiplex culture. We continue today with a look back at the summer of 1999. It was the summer I became Moriarty. To be fair, I had been contributing to Ain't It Cool for a little while already by that point, and I had been slowly but surely embracing the potential of the website and the audience that I was reaching. I had already taken a few trips to Austin, including a memorable stay at the third Quentin Tarantino Film Festival,...

This is how I know I’m getting too old and slow for the Internet: I put off writing about the Claire Danes Cry Project for a day and already I might have missed the proverbial boat. Maybe not, though — have you become a fan yet? It’s the best thing on Pinterest and Tumblr, if you happen to also be a fan of Claire Danes and the singular face she makes when she’s about to cry onscreen. Or if you happen to hate that face. If you have ever seen a single thing she has ever been in, you know what we’re talking about: the wrinkled chin, the scrunched down eyebrows, a bit of desperation in the eyes. It’s much like the way you can tell a little kid is about to cry. She first broke out heart with the look back when Jordan Catalano refused...

Time flies when you're not thinking about "Independence Day," but sixteen years have indeed passed since a merry band of Marines, computer experts, politicians and alcoholics gathered in the Nevada desert to save humanity.
Since then, "Independence Day" has grossed over $800 million internationally. But what happened to the film's cast?
(Smith, Fox and Bagley, then.)
First things first: Will Smith is still a famous movie star. After 16 years and at least one scuffle with a reporter who really wanted to kiss him, he even looks exactly the same. Though "Independence Day" remains Smith's biggest box office win, the actor has opened some huge movies since the mid '90s, including "I Am Legend" ($585 milion), "Men In Black" ($589 million), "Hancock," ($624 milllion), and, most recently, "Men in Black III" ($600 million so far).
Fox, who played Smith's girlfriend Jasmine, has been a part of "Kill Bill: Vol. 1," "Set It Off" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm.

It feels important to note that Caroline Manzo is inexplicably promoting the new movie People Like Us starring Elizabeth Banks. The Manzos remain the Bradys of this show, with the resplendent mini-greyhound-looking family dog Austin as a breakout star. As Caroline irately does dishes, they chill on the front lawn, where Chris Laurita comes bearing wine and thought-provoking discussion regarding the throwdown between Jacqueline and Teresa last week. We also see the effects the fight had on both women. Jacqueline, in the throes of a "complete breakdown," hyperventilates in the bathroom. Meanwhile, at the Brokedown Palace, Teresa reveals to Joe Giudice that she ran to dark horse Dina after her fight with Jacqueline to get the hit of "real friendship" she was tweaking for."[Jacqueline] was like, 'Oh my God, you didn't tell me [you might be going to jail, something any good friend would be concerned about in the Actual...

Beautifully shot and with a memorable, tough-guy-meets-vulnerable-dad performance from Joel Edgerton, "Wish You Were Here" keeps threatening to become a first-rate mystery tale about secrets, lies and sex.
Its story flits back and forth through time, unspooling a tale about a Cambodian holiday gone bad and the ramifications of an ecstasy-fueled party that leaves one man missing and the lives of his vacation mates in shambles. But there are a few weakly drawn characters and a rushed ending that leaves the timeline-hopping plot strands in an unsatisfying cinematic heap. It all made for an entertaining opening to the 2012 Sundance Film Festival on Thursday (January 19), but one that left us itching for some truly great festival films in the days to come.

After four years in an Italian prison, Amanda Knox's nightmarish trip abroad finally ended yesterday when an Italian court overturned her murder conviction. Knox was accused of sexually assaulting and murdering Meredith Kercher, her roommate in Italy, along with two other men. She's now heading back to the U.S. to freedom and tabloid fame.
The story of a young American in trouble abroad is a familiar one both in the news and in movie theaters. What happened to Amanda Knox has happened to several film heroes and heroines over the years, so we've put together a helpful travel guide based on what we've learned from the movies so you won't do the same.

A lot at home and a lot in theaters this week. Among my press screenings over the past seven days I had Hesher, Water for Elephants and Bridesmaids. One I've already reviewed and the others are on the horizon.
Then, on top of the films I have below, I also watched Brian De Palma's Blow Out, which comes out on Criterion Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday and I'll have a review of that one shortly.
However, one thing I will mention now about the Blow Out Blu-ray is one feature that wasn't mentioned when it was first announced, an HD version of De Palma's 1967 feature Murder a la Mod, which is a highly experimental film, but one that proves as long as a good filmmaker is at the helm even something that's not exactly great can be quite interesting. You can check out the first four minutes in the...

Paris Hilton was reportedly busted for pot again, this time on the French island of Corsica. The wonk-eyed starlet arrived to the island on a private jet on July 16, and after she landed police at the airport found a gram of marijuana on her but released her. Wait, what? Did these French cops go to the same police academy as the guy who found coke in Lindsay Lohan’s possession and threw it out thinking it was a crushed Altoid? This is Paris’ second pot bust in two weeks. She was also questioned by South African police while she was in the country for the World Cup on July 2. In that instance, she was not charged and claimed someone else in her party was smoking weed, and Tweeted later “Everything is fine guys. I had nothing to do with it.” In his weekend’s bust she also used Twitter to...

The sequel to The Hangover - available now on DVD and Blu-ray, incidentally - will be in theaters on Memorial Day weekend, 2011. That's a slight shift by Warner Bros. from this summer's early June release, one that really helped the film gain traction in summer's less active second month. I'm certain the massive success of the first film makes Warners think it can play anywhere, and they're probably right. Why that never applies to Harry Potter or Christopher Nolan, I have no idea.
So we have a release date and we know the cast and writer-director Todd Phillips will return but we don't have a story. That's Ok, right? I mean, the first one didn't really have much of one, either. Actually, The Hangover has a pretty involved story, loaded with tons of comedic call-backs. That it appears so simple is one of its strengths.

Kate Beckinsale's new movie, Whiteout, which opens in theaters today, is based on a graphic novel by Greg Rucka. The murder mystery, set in Antarctica had a "lesbian angle," so Beckinsale's character, Us deputy marshal Carrie Stetko was a gay lady.
That's right. Kate Beckinsale: Lesbian. Only, that whole angle has been omitted for the film adaptation, so we won't be seeing that happen any time soon. That's really too bad, because the film doesn't seem all that interesting.
The premise is that there's been a murder — the first for Antarctica — and Stetko only has three days to solve the crime, before everyone must evacuate due to an impending blizzard. Of course — it's Antarctica!
According to the New York Times review, the movie does get off to an interesting (however gratuitous) start with Beckinsale taking a shower. She won't be hooking up with any ladies on the frozen tundra,...

I had no idea what to expect from The Last Days of Disco. My experience with Kate Beckinsale began with Pearl Harbor and only goes back as far as Brokedown Palace (a film I don't even remember her in). Chloe Sevigny I didn't really know until 2003's Shattered Glass and have hardly gotten to know her since, outside of her role in Zodiac. On top of all that I had not seen a Whit Stillman feature. So to say I was approaching this one cold is an understatement. Actually, it was as if I was seeing Beckinsale and Sevigny for the very first time as they don't even resemble the actresses they have become, especially Beckinsale. Taking place in the early 1980s, The Last Days of Disco centers on Charlotte (Beckinsale) and Alice (Sevigny), two recent Ivy League college grads working in book publishing and spending their evenings in Manhattan's Studio 54-esque night club.

Thanapon Maliwan’s The Sanctuary is a film that we’ve been tracking here for a good while now. Maliwan rose to attention as one of the directors in the Pechpanna Productions stable, the Thai action outfit where both Panna Rittikrai and Tony Jaa got their starts, Maliwan directing both Jaa and his mentor is at least one early pre-Ong Bak film together. And then there’s star Mike B, a Thai stunt man who was one of the key stunt performers in Ong Bak who Maliwan has been grooming for stardom for a little while.
This particular project began life as Dead End before finance troubles forced it to be suspended for a while and Maliwan and Mike B went off and made inconsistent action-comedy Brave instead. That project out of the way the materials from Dead End were reworked and redeveloped and the project re-launched as The Sanctuary...

Kate Beckinsale could "handle herself" in prison. The 35-year-old actress - who has played an inmate in many of her films - thinks she would have no trouble coping in jail.
She said: "It's weird because I do feel like I have done more of my fair share of time. I did the prison thing in 'Brokedown Palace,' I've done the Philippines prison."
"Actually I think I could probably handle myself in a real prison - if I had something heavy to put in my sock!"
Kate's father Richard starred in hit U.K. TV prison show "Porridge" and the actress believes she may have inherited his love of playing a villain.
