Not great, but not bad.
Sparrow_in_flight20 October 2003
This is a kids' movie to watch if you are bored. It's entertaining in some parts, but normally to enjoy this, you'd probably have to be under ten. For kid actors, the acting isn't that bad - it's just the storyline. Very average.

Star Kid
TroyeEvans8 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The plot is fine. There are fun elements and the story is complete, though there are not really any big surprises. For those of you who do not know, this is a film about a weak kid who gets bullied at school and he encounters a robot suit from outer space that he can fit into and become "strong".

The acting is fine. Both the young and the adult actors delivered fine performances.

The special effects look quite cheap. It is probably a problem originated from the budget.

It gets more and more boring towards the end, and the climax is not at all rewarding. The ending is far too cheesy.

The look of the robot does not really impress me. It is sort of creepy for me. I would go with better design.

Still, it is a good family film for a Sunday afternoon if all you are looking forward to is some robot fun and nothing more. I am sure this film has done enough to impress the kids.

4/10 - Fine

Sorta Fun, but poor use of talent
satterwh28 February 2002
I liked this film; it's fun to watch. It's not a great film, but how many are? The computer graphics are good, the story is familiar but well handled. What makes it work is Joseph Mazzello. I really haven't seen him give a weak performance in anything, and he definitely carries this film.

That's also what I consider the film's greatest weakness. Joseph has to do most of his acting from the inside of a helmet using only his face and voice. He handles it well, but it's a shame we don't get to see more of what he can do.

It's a good film to watch with the whole family. I gave it a 5.

Fun kids film with it's tongue in it's cheek
bob the moo28 January 2002
Far away from Earth the Trelkins are defending their planet from the invading Broodwarriors. On earth Spencer has his own problems - too shy to talk to girls, ignored by his single parent Dad and bullied at school. When a Trelkin Phase 1 Cyber Assault Suit lands in a nearby junk yard in need of bio-organism to interface with, Spencer concedes and finds himself in control of a 8ft robot. However when a Broodwarrior comes to capture the suit to help their invasion Spencer finds himself in a situation where he must face his fears.

Yes, it's a kid movie where the `geek' comes good. The difference here is that it is actually pretty good fun for kids and adults. The story mainly revolves around the relationship between the suit and Spencer. This is handled well with the usual mis-communications (the suit responds to `this is cool!' by starting to heat the internal area to 1000C) and fish out of water jokes. The chemistry between the two is good and keeps the film fun. The other element where the Broodwarrior comes in, is also great. The fight between the suit, two kids and a huge alien may not be realistic but it's handled very well and is very enjoyable.

Mazello manages to play the kid without being too feeble or too annoying (a rare thing in children!) and is very good throughout. Daniels is good as the suit despite being lumbered by a mechanical voice. The only weaknesses here are the poor suit effects - it looks like it was designed to be liked by children - and the inevitable showdown is a little unlikely. Mind you, most of the fights are really good and the Broodwarrior, although clearly a man in a rubber suit, looks great and is well designed.

Overall it's very entertaining. It's not clever but the humour, spectacle and sense of fun save it from being for kids only.

A standard youth wish fullfillment concept that can't even get the bare basics right.
IonicBreezeMachine30 April 2021
Spencer (Joseph Mazzello) is a shy 12 year old boy whose fear makes him a go to target for bullies and unable to utter a single word to his crush. On the evening when he witnesses a UFO crash in the local junkyard Spencer investigates to find it is an alien exoskeleton called a Cyborsuit (voiced by Arthur Burghardt, physically played by Alex Daniels). Spencer dons the suit and finds himself in control of powers greater than he ever imagined, and uses it to get revenge on his bully and observe his crush from a distance. But when a creature of the vicious Broodwarrior race comes to Earth in search of the suit, Spencer's fantasy joy ride becomes a fight for the fate of the galaxy.

By the mid-90s, Trimark Pictures had established a successful business model as a distributor of B-features such as their enduring Leprechaun horror series as well as indie and foreign acquisitions of niche appeal such as Ken Russell's Whore or Peter Jackson's Dead Alive. With the direct-to-video and direct-to-cable markets well saturated with b-level action, horror, and erotic thrillers Trimark decided to test their abilities to break into the mainstream. While Star Kid's budget of $11-12 million dollars may seem modest in comparison to the behemoths the big six (and to a lesser extent MGM) were putting out, Star Kid dwarfed the previous Trimark productions by a significant amount. The film was even positioned as one of Trimark's hottest items when it was sold to foreign territories at the 1995 American film market....and then it sat on a shelf for three years before limping out into U. S. theaters while Titanic dominated the box office. But even if it wasn't released in the shadow of a cultural phenomenon Star Kid would've most likely faded pretty quickly because despite a seemingly simple premise it still manages to bungle it.

If you were to take a mixture of Flight of the Navigator, The Greatest American Hero, Power Rangers, and maybe some Laserblast you might get something similar to Star Kid only without the sincerity of the first two or the campy charm of the latter two. It's easy to understand why Star Kid was made as it has a lot in common with contemporary kids shows like Big Bad Beetleborgs or Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad with the wish fulfillment power fantasy premise of kids having superpowers, and considering that at one point Beetleborgs actually besting Power Rangers rating wise at one point it makes sense that producers would want to ape that. But despite the ripe potential for a premise of kid having his own alien powersuit, the movie has surprisingly little idea what to do with it until about the 1 hour mark.

After a 5 minute prologue sequence showing us a battle between the Broodwarriors and diminutive Trelkins(the movies default "good" guys who look like shaved Ewoks dyed purple), the movie then switches to Smalltown, USA (or Crystal Bluff as it's called but same difference). The next 10 minutes are dedicated to showing Spence humiliate himself or be the subject of abuse at the hands of a bully named "Turbo"(yes, really) which is then followed by stock family melodrama with workaholic father and bratty teenage sister who hates our protagonist. It's like the movie picked up all the kids movie cliches years since Home Alone and crammed them into the opening. Once Spencer obtains the suit we see him terrorize Turbo, stalk his crush, go on an inadvertent shooting spree that almost kills said crush, destroy his house, steal from a fast food restaurant, and no kidding ten...entire....minutes of Spencer yelling about how he needs to pee but the suit won't let him out leading to an uncomfortable situation where he gets assistance from his teacher to help open the pelvic compartment in his suit.....this is all the first hour of the movie. The movie does eventually give us some actual scenes of Spencer using the suit for superhero-ish stuff, but it's so poorly choreographed as it's obvious the suit actors can't do much in these foam rubber monstrosities that it relies on a lot of awkward staging, angle changes, and haphazard effects work to convey these sequences with even the relatively streamlined Cyborsuit struggling.

Speaking of the suit: it's hideous! Not only is it cheap looking trying to pass itself off as metal, but with its overly big dead eyes, round head, over molded physique that makes the molded physiques in Batman & Robin look restrained, and an even creepier face inside the suit, the suit doesn't convey wonder, mystique, or power and instead looks like a giant version of a baby doll if you spray painted it gray after taking its clothes off. The suit's voice is also quite off putting when put in conjunction with the suit. While Arthur Burghardt is a good voice actor, he's best known for playing Devastator in the Transformers cartoon and Destro in the G. I. Joe cartoon. I'm all for actors playing against type, but it was a mistake having Burghardt voice something we the audience are supposed to feel for because his aggressive bass heavy delivery (that seems like it was run through a synthesizer) in combination with a really unappealing design creates a barrier between us and the audience especially in the scenes the movie plays for emotion. Not only is the suit off putting on a visual and auditory level, but with a large sequence where Spencer is trapped inside the suit with no way out it diminishes the power fantasy aspect and makes what should be fun claustrophobic and creepy.

The human actors are all unfortunately not great. Joseph Mazzello has shown himself to be a capable actor in things like Jurassic Park or The River Wild, and even the same year as this film with his lead role in Simon Birch. Unfortunately Mazzello is saddled with screaming at the top of his lungs or smirking and smugging his way through hackneyed quips. You can tell he's trying during the scenes playing for emotion like when the suit plays a memory of his dead mom, but it's so awkwardly staged that Mazzello's basically asked to push a boulder up a mountain. The rest of the cast basically falls into stock types barely filling out even the loosest standards for what qualifies as "character". Lauren Eckstrom splays Spencer's love interest Michelle who's basically as pure and blank as the standard "girl next door" archetype can get (but she likes the same comic as spencer, that means she's perfect for him!!!). People criticize shows like Power Rangers and Beetleborgs for being over the top schlock designed to sell toys and there's a nugget of truth in that stance that one is challenged to disagree with, but at least those shows gave their audience what they wanted. Power Rangers and Beetleborgs despite being silly show their heroes stopping monsters from hurting people and rescuing those in distress. The one time Spencer rescues someone in this movie it's from a disaster he caused while stalking her.

Star Kid takes a basic premise and bungles it in every possible way. From an unlikable protagonist who casually uses his newfound alien technology to terrorize a bully and stalk his crush, to a creepy suit that is ill conceived on every possible level, to a plot that putters around aimlessly for 70% of its runtime until it rushes to an artificial climax, Star Kid is generic poorly made trash that doesn't exude even a hint of passion, adventure, humor, or fun. While Warriors of Virtue killed itself with an uninteresting protagonist and an underdeveloped world, it felt like there was a solid core that could've worked had it been polished. Star Kid doesn't have a strong core and is a poorly thought out concept done with the bare minimum.

This time through an Alien robot that happens to land on Earth. Our boy enters the Robot and takes control as they create chaos and save the world from doomsday.

A fun little romp.
Curtis G.28 May 2003
I remember seeing the preview to "Star Kid" when it came out in theaters and thinking, "Man, does that look dumb." Last night it came on one of the movie channels--at 10pm, strangely--so I figured I'd let it play in the background while I did some work. I ended up watching the whole thing, and guess what--I really enjoyed it. Sure, there are some inevitably silly scenes, but then, at 37, I'm way out of the target demographic.

I don't want to find fault with the movie because "it is what it is." The actors are all decent, the effects are better than I had expected, and best of all, it has heart. I'm building a library of movies for our kids (when we finally have some), and said movies will need to be wholesome family entertainment that I won't mind watching, too. I will definitely include "Star Kid."

Failed Potential
xstar-569-86340717 February 2023
As a child I was ecstatic when I saw the trailer for this film blast across my TV. As soon as it was released I grabbed my friend and bum rushed the theater. I even went as far as buying the VHS when it came out. Fast forward a few years into adulthood and I see this film had so much potential to stand the test of time. I'll give it a little mercy because it's a children's film, but it feels rushed, corny and the action sequences are subpar. The young kid from Jurassic park was defiinitley on a hot streak in this era and he was a good choice to carry the film. Just wanted to see more usage of the suit rather than comedic froliicing around the city while destroying property with no rhyme or reason. Since Hollywood is all about remakes, I'd be down for a remake, but make it darker and ante up the action and dialogue.

Surprisingly Fun Movie
bobbyd6107422 January 2021
What a fun movie! I was hesitant due to it looking dated, but my son (10 Years Old) and I loved it. It's funny, cheesy, with age appropriate action. Think, Big Hero 6 meets Power Rangers meets Terminator. Give it a try. It's better than much of what's out there. Not better fx better story/acting/humor.

hilariously bad but also not horrible?
FeastMode11 December 2021
I watched this movie to make fun of it. It's pretty bad and has lots of stuff to make fun of. But at the same time, it's far from the worst thing I've seen. There are a decent amounts of jokes that land, and I didn't hate the relationship between the kid and the alien. It's kind of like Venom for children. Still bad, just not atrocious. fun family flick
lordzedd-314 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I got to admit I enjoyed STAR KID. The story works, the characters work, the monsters work. Everything basically works for this movie. I love the Cyborsuit, he is a clever character. The whole premise almost reminds me of FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR a few years back. But not much. This is a fun movie that the whole family can get into, there plenty of action, humor and warmth so even Mom can like this movie. The guys will like all the cool alien monsters both good and bad. Now some of the dialog was weak at points and I think they spent to much time on Spencer before the Cyborsuit arrived. But other then that I think this is a fun flick that you can watch over and over again. 9 STARS.

An ok movie.
the_gelatinous_wolf19 June 2002
This is an ok movie. It shows on the Disney Channel a lot, and usually it is just on in the background, or I am watching it but not really paying attention. I have watched it from start to finish though, and it is ... well, mediocre. I guess if you like sci-fi type movies, you might give it an 8 or 9. Me? It deserves a 6.

Silly movie more aimed at kids.
justin-fencsak3 June 2020
I saw a part of the movie while i was waiting for Star Wars to begin back in 1997 as I snuck into a showing with my dad at the now gone Loews Secaucus plaza 8 and thought it looked silly and was more like an 80s style alien robot movie with a message. It didn't catch fire at the box office but has seen been seen more on TV and streaming and is now a cult classic.

"Mazzello's a superhero"
famelovingboy6815 April 2003
12-year-old Spencer Griffith (Joseph Mazzelllo)is an intelligent introveterted kid, who's life couldn't get much worse. His beloved mom died a few years earlier, his dad ignores him,his sister is a jerk to him, and he's a "dweeb" at school. Spencer gets picked on and beat on at school by his school nemesis a couple years older than him, "Turbo", and he's too shy to talk to Michelle, the cute girl in school. His only escape is reading the comic book "Midnight Warrior" Salvation is on its way! When Spencer is at home alone, because his boy crazy sister goes out with her boyfriend (Danny Masterson from That 70's Show), a cybersuit lands in the junkyard, which he jumps into and names cy,short for "cybersuit" and teaches it human language, becomes it's friend, and gets revenge on Turbo, by scaring the crap out of him! Later he learns that broodwariors have come to destroy the earth, and it's up to the runty kid and Turbo, who becomes his friend to stop them. I loved seeing Joseph Mazzello be a superhero like figure, he was my favorite young actor, and he's usually in Hard hitting dramas that are often depressing, and didn't get much attention or scene steeling moments in the action films he was in.

Design is soooo bad
fletchy-573544 March 2021
Astro boy, iron man, c3po...so many great designs and they went with this? Ridiculous.

A kids film can be goofy and badly written thats fine, but having the main character of the film look like a horrifying joke is unforgivable.

Not terrific but generally fun and imaginative
Atreyu_II27 February 2011
Joseph Mazzello. I like him very much. That is why I wanted to see this film, even though the plot wasn't especially promising. This isn't one of Joseph's best films. It is okay but quite flawed. No less true is that, without our idol Joseph, it would have been a lot worse. He takes the whole movie alone. The movie only works because of him. As usual, Joseph is wonderful on his part.

The only strange and minor side of his acting here is that he spends a great deal of time inside a cybersuit. Nothing wrong with his acting, it's just that spending such a great amount of time inside of a cybersuit is a limitation that prevents him from doing other things he could do, even though he still goes far on this role despite the limitations implied. He's got some hilarious lines and he does some pretty funny faces as well (always so convincing and expressive).

The things Spencer (Joseph's character) does in this movie with Cy (the cybersuit)... I bet this is how little Bobby from 'Radio Flyer' would have liked to make his brutal stepfather "The King" pay for everything he did to him.

It's a fun film to watch, original and imaginative. Yes, it's silly, but worthy for Joseph Mazzello's fans precisely thanks to him.

Eh, like it or not...
omegarobot2121 June 1999
Star Kid is a typical 'loser kid' who gets back at everyone and in the end is respected and loved giving all the nerds and losers hope that one day this could happen to them and make their lives so much easier. Wouldn't that be nice? Such is the case in this film starring no one you or me will ever hear of until a major blockbuster film comes out in which they play a minor role and eventually make their way to the top. This story has a bit of a twist to the usual tale, the 'bully' teams up with the 'loser' and they together save mankind. The humor is kiddie and not very often funny. But, the plot is well constructed and fine by my standards.

What's Wrong?
JPFan8 September 1999
I've read quite a few reviews for this movie and was wondering what the problem was. Some people think the main actor, Joseph Mazzello, was wasting his time with this film, But I don't think it would have worked without him. I thought it was funny and enjoyable. Maybe the beginning was a little cheesy, but overall I would recommend this to watch.

Awesome movie.
TheScriptmaster26 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is about a kid who discovers a cybersuit after seeing a meteor crash in the local junkyard. After getting to know the AI inside the suit itself, he discovers the two battling alien races, and encounters one of the Brood Warriors so seeks to destroy earth.

Armed with alien technology, Earth's defense rests on the shoulders on a single kid, and with the help of some unexpected allies, he manages to claim victory over the brood warrior, and saves Earth from future invasion.

I'm personally shocked to see it got such a low rating. Awesome replay value if you like to watch movies over and over again. 10/10.

Usual Family Movie...
soda_pop415 February 2000
I watched this with my younger brother and he loved it.

We-ll, I've seen these kind of movies since 7, and I know everything what goes on family movies. Let's see, there's a kid(sort of a nerd type) who is bullied by a *bad* kid, and he meets a new friend(eg.E.T or alien). They go round'n'round the journey and at the ending, the new friend has to go home. So, the kid cries, says goodbye, hugs the friend...

I've seen this kind of movies SO many times. "Star Kid" is no exception, but the computer graphics and the special effects were great. I give this movie: 6 out of 10.

Star kid is a great family movie. If you like sci-fi fantasy it's a good one to check out. The story is somewhat predictable but the adventure is fun and full of laughs. Just watch it and don't be overly critical.

Okay for a family movie
Peter T. Movie1 January 2000
Even though half the movie was spent looking up Joseph Mazzello's nose (or his face) I still had a little bit of fun. The story wasn't really anything you haven't seen before, its kind of like a low bugget, low scale version of Independence Day, Mac and Me, and E.T put together. See it if you want, but don't expected much, unless you are around 6 to 13.

My rating: 7

2023. A Gen-X Review of a Decades Old Film That I've Never, Ever Seen Before
RightOnDaddio20 July 2023
I am shocked by how decent this is. They do not make live action movies like this for kids anymore.

Is it E. T.?

Heck no. Of course not.

But E. T. wasn't directed by the writer and director of Dr. Giggles now, was it?

No, it was not.

As a matter of fact, quite sadly, as of just a few days prior to writing this review, the writer and director of this fine family film, Manny Coto passed away.

July 9, 2023 in Pasadena of Pancreatic Cancer.

Rest In Peace.

He made a sweet, enjoyable film here about alien life meeting awkwardly with young American life in the late 20th Century.

Sure, you've seen it all before.

But the effects here are solid. Comparable to anything Power Rangers of that same era. Maybe even better than that.

All the good, soulful themes and lessons are there for the young viewing audience.

Overcoming bullying.

Making friends.

Teamwork makes the dream work.

Love and appreciate your home and family.

The kid in this, the main star opposite the alien, Joseph Mazzello has grown up to have a decent acting career as an adult with solid credits in Bohemian Rhapsody, The Social Network, American Crime Story and Justified among other things.

This movie also stars Corinne Bohrer.as the school teacher. She was one of those 1980's and 90's sirens for me. Every know and again she'd pop up in something I was watching and just brighten the whole screen just as she does here in this. She was a viable double threat then: Stunningly gorgeous and absolutely hilarious.

As previously stated, they just don't make live action kids movies like this at all anymore. Not even for streaming.

This is a fossil.

But it is of great value as fossils can be.

Honor this great visionary of a recently departed filmmaker.

Make this a find for you and your family.

Dig up his fossil.
