Diverting, ingratiating European gay comedy worth seeing, but `La Cage aux Folles' it ain't.

What ever happened to the meaning of those steadfast mottos `there's honor among thieves' and `blood is thicker than water?" `Das Trio,' an ingratiating German-made comedy (with sub-titles) taunts and tests these age-old theories to ostensible effect. It's a deceptively simple, amusing, if less than gut-busting tale of a rootless family of pickpockets who invite turmoil into their lot as a clash of very disparate libidos begins to chip away at the fabric of their operation. Buoyed by expert performances, it'll keep a smile on your face at the very least.

Zobel is the middle-aged, hands-on leader of this tiny trio of merrie men who steal from the rich and give to themselves. The two other cohorts are his feisty, independent daughter, Lizzi (from an incidental heterosexual liaison), and his aging, subservient, doleful lover, Karl, who conceals his advancing age with a toupee and prances about in women's gowns as an inducement to foreplay. Somehow managing an existence all these years, their mode of operation is hardly original. I mean, the blind man with the cane routine? Come on. How they survived this long, I'll never know. As the despondent Karl grows more insecure, dissatisfied and absent-minded, the possibility of a new partner is bandied about by father and daughter.

An unfortunate accident leaves Zobel and Lizzi no choice but to prevail upon the raw talents of a young Artful Dodger wannabe, an outcast who takes in snakes as pets and writes crappy poems. It just so happens Rudolf is also a very sexy, shambling young upstart who is only too willing to gratify the father/daughter team in whatever ways it takes to become part of the scheme team. Complications arise, dissension grows, and most of the film's intended humor comes about as the teacher becomes enamored by his new thief-in-training, even though the boy has already taken to bedding down the daughter.

Götz George as Zobel plays the roguish, Fagin-like ringleader with customary flair. One of Germany's most popular actors, the virile actor gets to play an aging and openly robust gay character here, yet loses little of his own characteristic machismo. Slightly softening his edges while infusing him with a gentle charm and a wanton sex drive that just so happens to be aimed at men, George provides a strong, believable center for the film.

Jeanette Hain gives daughter Lizzi a taut, highly appealing Winona Ryder-like quirkiness, and boyishly handsome Felix Eitner as the new third party fits the enigmatic pretty-boy part to a tee. His Rudolf is awkward and ambitious, with a dumb-kind-of-smart off-centeredness that sustains your interest. Christian Redl as Zobel's long-suffering lover and sycophant nets a great deal of empathy from the viewers as the man desperately tries to come to terms with his decline in importance.

Director Hermine Huntgeburth succeeds in comfortably sidestepping the negative, unappetizing aspects of her characters. After all, why should we care about, much less enjoy, the antics of four lowly parasites of society, robbed even of a conscience when it comes to each other? Even more problematic is the fact that we are not always clued in as to the intent or purpose of some of their hurtful, purely narcissistic actions, leaving the viewer somewhat cold and in a quandary as to who or what to root for. Credit the director and actors for nearly overcoming that big obstacle.

By the way, don't let the soft-core, erotic-looking box cover picture with two hands (one female, one male) groping a well-built young man's posterior clad only in tight underpants mislead you. It's an obvious and unworthy ruse to accelerate rental sales. This is NOT a titillation picture despite the fact there are a number of homosexual and heterosexual clinches throughout. Behind it, there is actually an intelligent plot abetted by four supremely professional actors who make it all worthwhile. And it's all capped off by a fun, wry twist at the end.

As a renter, "Das Trio" is a real steal!

An other great movie shown at Cannes Film Festival 1998

This movie was a heartwarming movie with very good acting and good direction. The story line is sweet and the ending is darling. One of the best German movies that I have seen. Movies like this should be dubbed into English and there would be a market for them. Most Americans don't like subtitles.

The story just isn't working

"Das Trio" is a German movie from 1998, so this one soon will have its 20th anniversary. It runs for slightly over 90 minutes and was directed by Hermine Huntgeburth, who is also one of the three writers working on this one. The cast includes a handful famous names, such as the late Götz George playing possibly the main character as well as Christian Berkel, the young Jeanette Hain and Armin Rohde (as well as his brother Uwe), only to mention a few. German movie fans will certainly know these people. I am not too sure though if they know Felix Eitner. This is definitely one of his biggest performance and he has kinda disappeared since this film came out. Lets take a look at the story here. Sadly, it is not convincing at all and you see that Huntgeburth is still far far away from her best. The plot has nothing (or almost nothing) to do with reality. The character seem over-the-top in a way that lacks realism completely and the sexual orientations of the characters do not feel authentic, but just made as dramatic for the sake of it, not for telling a good story unfortunately. If there is one thing that this film lacks, then it is subtlety and this not only refers to the script, but also to the actors who go way over the top on some occasions. This was especially disappointing for me to watch as I am quite a big Götz George fan, but he is not one of the (non-existing almost= positive aspects in here either. I guess this film is still somewhat known (definitely more known than it should be) as films about LBGT subjects frequently are, even if the quality just isn't there. Annd this is oh so true for this one here. Another word on Eitner, he played such a crucial character, but was oh so forgettable. No surprise his career went irrelevant fairly quickly as his role was truly baity here, but he did not only not make the most of it, he made almost nothing of it. What stays somewhat solid is eventually just the really stunning Jeanette Hain, who gives an okay performance foe her age I guess and also an occasionally good moment from George. Berker, however, was really wasted here in my opinion. All in all, the negative clearly outweighs the positive and 4 stars out of 10 is still somewhat on the generous side. I give this one a thumbs-down, one of my least favorite George films.

A Trio Combined with Fun, Love & Complicity! A Fine German Comedy Film!

This is one of the films that I have most enjoyed seeing the adventures of 3 people so related to each other where complicity overcomes all the problems faced by the law and sexual complacency. This Director brought a fun, healthy story, without surrealism or so much philosophy, He only mixed the coexistence of three people who used to steal wallets as a means of survival and lived in a trailer without following any of the common rules. That is why the film brought more interest when the sexy young man appeared on the scene bringing some changes and attitudes to be involved in a triangle turned into sexual desire and falling in love with daughter and father at the same time! One of the best stories different from the German thrillers that I have seen in recent years!

Brilliant acting saves ambitious plot

Das Trio is a excellent piece of film about a family of three pick-pockets and their struggle to keep everything together, themselves as well as the family unit, situated in present Germany. The story is filled with strong-felt emotions which is beautifully reflected through the characters, and the complexity of the plot thickens increasingly towards the end. At one point I really felt that it was going absurd, but the brilliant acting sort of put it all back and kept the movie real. Because thats what it is; a real movie and I love it.
