Brad Anderson, a director whose credits include Session 9 and The Call, was recently hired to direct the zombie film Twilight of the Dead, which is based on a treatment left behind by the great George A. Romero when he passed away in 2017. Twilight of the Dead is expected to start filming in Puerto Rico by the end of this year – and Deadline reports that Anderson has already lined up the project he’ll be making after he works with Romero zombies. It’s a sci-fi action creature feature called Worldbreaker, which The Exchange will be presenting to potential international distributors at the upcoming American Film Market.
Scripted by Joshua Rollins (Infinite Storm), Worldbreaker has the following synopsis: Five years ago, a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction. A father hides his daughter on an island to...

Back in 2021, it was revealed that the legendary George A. Romero (who passed away in 2017) had left behind a treatment for the “seventh and final installment” in his Dead franchise – following Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead. The story Romero had come up with used a title than many fans expected him to use for his follow-up to Day, Twilight of the Dead, and the team of Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati, who also worked on the treatment with Romero, were working on fleshing it out into a screenplay. Last month, we heard that Twilight of the Dead had secured funding from Roundtable Entertainment. And now we know who’s going to direct the film: Session 9 director Brad Anderson!

If you’re not already, Hulu should get you in the summer mood with its June releases. Go to summer camp with the slasher flick “Friday the 13th” — and seven sequels. Listen to the breezy tune “Stuck in the Middle With You” from “Reservoir Dogs.” Compare thee to a summer’s day with “Shakespeare in Love” and “Hamlet.” Go surfing with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze with “Point Break.” Or if for some reason summer is getting you in a nihilistic mood, go on a Bret Easton Ellis binge with “American Psycho” and “Less Than Zero.”
And if that wasn’t enough, Hulu is bringing back its original series “The Handmaid’s Tale” for a third season.

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Check here for a complete list of our essays. Just one glance at the Oscar nominees for 1998 might make it seem less a questionable choice for “best year in film” — and more an insane one. Instead of a 1974 – The Godfather II, The Conversation, Chinatown, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, etc – or even a 1994, where Shawshank, Quiz Show, and Pulp Fiction lost to Gump – you choose a year where the Oscars would allow Roberto Benigni to climb atop both the figurative and literal chairs of the Shrine? Fine, step away from the Oscars. Would you still celebrate a year that saw not one, but two movies about asteroids threatening the Earth? A year that saw such scars carved across cinematic history as Patch Adams, My Giant, Stepmom, and Krippendorf’s Tribe? It bears repeating: Krippendorf’S Tribe?...

It's easy to forget that director Brad Anderson began his career with romantic comedies. After making his mark at Sundance with "The Darien Gap," "Next Stop Wonderland" and "Happy Accidents," Anderson switched gears completely and made psychological thrillers "Session 9" and "The Machinist," starring Christian Bale. His latest, "Vanishing on 7th Street," finds the director on similar terrain. A post-apocalyptic horror film steeped in darkness, "Vanishing on 7th Street" opens ...

Vanishing on 7th Street starring Hayden Christiansen (Anakin Skywalker and possibly one of the worst actors working today) alongside Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo. Newton is Rosemary a Physical Therapist who takes a smoke break when, upon her return, finds her hospital empty. Newcomer Jacob Latimore plays James, a young boy who can’t seem to find his mother.
The initial set-up in the trailer looks pretty fascinating, a deserted world as people start to disappear, with the sun rising later and later. Loved it when it was one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes, but here they attempt to expand on that general idea. After night falls upon them there are shadows that dart out to attack them which also seems similar to a recently decent horror flick entitled Darkness Falls.
No matter how contrived or ripped off the story appears, as the set-up feels like a recycle of a carbon copy,...

Brad Anderson is one of those filmmakers like Michael Winterbottom who seems to have escaped the normal trap of getting stuck working in only one genre. Anderson has a definite flair for horror, with films like "The Mechanist" and "Session 9" on his resume, as well as episodes of both "Fear Itself" and "Masters Of Horror." But he's also made films like "Transsiberian" and "Happy Accidents" and "Next Stop Wonderland," and he's directed a bunch of episodes of the trippy sci-fi show "Fringe" lately. If you've seen his horror films, then you know that mood is incredibly important to him, much more than overt scares. ...

I recall a time, a good time, long ago when Hayden Christensen vowed to stop acting after the Star Wars prequels. He said he wanted to focus on architechure or something like that. I wish we could live in those times. Unfortunately, we live in a different time where he continues to act in things like Takers and The Vanishing on 7th Street. I wish he’d vanish from theaters.

Director Brad Anderson’s Vanishing on 7th Street now offers a first look with new images and a cool poster. I haven’t heard of this film until the website just popped up for it. It seems pretty cool after watching the first look featurette (see embed below). The website is pretty cool as well, because you can play the eerie score from Lucas Vidal and watch a featurette – it’s just very well put together. For those of you who do not know who Brad Anderson is or what he has done, he has reached critical acclaim for films like The Machinist and Transsiberia. His films have varied from Sundance Film Festival audience favorites Next Stop Wonderland (1998) and Happy Accidents (2000) to darker films, such as Session 9 (2001). Anderson has also directed a number of television episodes. Most notably, in addition to having directed two episodes of The Wire, Anderson often directs episodes of Fringe.

Philip Seymour Hoffman gets my vote as one of the five greatest living movie actors. He recalls those golden days during the late 1960s and 1970s when actors like Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman were cast because of their personality and skill, rather than looks. He can do anything. He could play a romantic lead, he's a comedian, he can play passive and sad, as well as aggressive and dangerous. He could be a silent clown, or Philip Marlowe, or Othello. So I was excited to take on a "Their Best Role" for him. But it wasn't long before I was faced with his impressive filmography -- which looks a bit like someone's list of the best films of the decade -- and daunted by the prospect of choosing just one movie, one role. I decided to start in 1997, when Hoffman gave his breakthrough performance in Boogie Nights, and then...

Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo have all signed on to star in Vanishing on Seventh Street, an indie thriller from director Brad Anderson. Written by Anderson and Anthony Jaswinski, the story is set in a once-thriving city where shadowy forms cause residents to inexplicably disappear. Five survivors fight to stay alive while grappling with the meaning of existence. Christensen is playing a reporter. Newton will play a desperate nurse and Leguizamo a subway operator. Anderson’s previous directing credits include Transsiberian, The Machinist, Session 9 and Next Stop Wonderland. He’s also directed episodes of Fringe, The Shield, Masters of Horror, The Wire and Homicide: Life on the Street. Christensen most recently appeared on the big screen in Jumper and next stars opposite Matt Dillon and Zoe Saldana in the thriller Takers, which Screen Gems releases in February. Newton next appears in Roland Emmerich’s 2012. Leguizamo will next...

HBO drama series, "In Treatment", will have other two patients for its psychotherapist, Dr. Paul Weston. Hope Davis and John Mahoney will play roles on the series's second season as Dr. Weston's patients who suffer different kinds of mental illness.
In the series, Davis will play as Mira, a high-powered malpractice lawyer and Dr. Weston's former patient who blames the psychotherapist for her being single and having no children. It will be her first appearance on TV series since she worked for ABC's drama "Six Degrees" in the 2006-07 season. The actress is well known for her roles in some movies such as, "About Schmidt", "Next Stop Wonderland", and "American Splendor".

El Cantante (2007)
Tuesday. 12:35 a.m., HBO
This underrated but beautifully acted biopic tells the story of Latino singer Hector Lavoe, a creator of salsa music. As Lavoe, Marc Anthony jumps off the screen and Jennifer Lopez sizzles as his wife. The story traces Lavoe's rise to stardom in the 1970s and his subsequent fall 10 years later. Even though the story is heartbreaking, the music is terrific.

By now, writer/director Brad Anderson ("Session 9") must be bored to death of people asking him about Christian Bale's monumental weight loss for "The Machinist," perhaps the most memorably disturbing image from his still-under-the-radar career. (Could this be the same Brad Anderson who once made quirky rom-coms like "Next Stop Wonderland" and "Happy Accidents"? Indeed, it is.) After taking on episodes of "The Wire" and "Masters of Horror," Anderson returns to features with the moody, diabolically suspenseful "Transsiberian," starring Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer as an American couple on a church-sponsored charity mission in China who soon face moral dilemmas and enigmatic strangers on the titular train to Russia. Of course ol' Hitch came up in my conversation with Anderson, but so did Dostoyevsky, hipster thrillers and the in-the-works adaptation he wishes he could've made. [Warning: Major spoilers ahead!]
