Chances are, if you were even remotely interested in basketball and video games in the ‘90s, there was a strong likelihood that you played NBA Jam. Over 30 years later, NBA Jam still holds up, with its fast-paced and frenetic, two-on-two basketball match-ups featuring many of the biggest names of the era.
With plenty of in-game secrets, axed content, and behind-the-scenes tales from its development, there is plenty about NBA Jam that even its biggest fans might not be aware of. Here are all the biggest secrets and fun facts about the iconic basketball video game series.

So, Mortal Kombat took the fighting game by storm, and made it a worthy opponent to Capcom’s Street Fighter II. The obvious question after that is: How do you follow up that success? The obvious answer came in November 1993 with Mortal Kombat II. Was it more of the same? Not quite. Building upon the framework of the original game, Mkii honed what made the original game so great, added more Kombatants, more Fatalities, more secrets, and in general just gave fans more of what they craved in pixelated blood.
Mortal Kombat II picks up after the events of the previous tournament, where Shaolin warrior Liu Kang had defeated both the reigning Mortal Kombat champion Goro and the shapeshifting sorcerer Shang Tsung. Shang is brought before his master, Shao Kahn, the supreme ruler of Outworld, begging Kahn to spare his life. Shao Kahn relents after hearing Shang Tsung’s new...

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which started filming at the end of June… then had to shut down production when the Screen Actors Guild strike hit a couple weeks later. That strike came to an end last week, and it was rumored that Mortal Kombat 2 would go back into production in early 2024. When producer Todd Garner saw that rumor, he tweeted, “This is not true. We are filming before then…” Way before then, as it turns out. Garner and cast member Karl Urban have both confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2 is already filming again!
Urban confirmed by sharing a picture that shows him hanging out with some of his castmates. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Pat E. Johnson, a longtime stuntman who was the fight choreographer for and played a referee in the Karate Kid movies and appeared in the martial arts classic Enter the Dragon and in Chuck Norris films, has died. He was 84.
His wife, Susan, posted on social media that he died Sunday but did not provide details.
“For those that don’t know, my husband, Pat Johnson, passed away yesterday,” Sue Johnson posted on Facebook. “I was blessed to have all my sons here with me – we cried, we laughed, we held each other close. 54 years off my life is now at peace, and I am blessed with so many amazing memories, friends, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. If anyone wants to remember him through a donation in his name, we believe greatly in the Diabetes association or living Kidney association – both near and dear to our hearts. Thank you to...

We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

By all accounts, Ed Boon is just a regular guy. Chicago-raised, he loves shlocky Eighties action flicks and the music of Prince. Like everyone else, he’s racing to catch up on Succession but it’s tough to fit into his busy work schedule. His work just happens to be leading development for the latest installment of Mortal Kombat, one of the most influential game series of all time – not just for its impact on gaming, but for its three decades worth of symbiosis with our culture.

Mortal Kombat is a prolific fighting franchise. Despite the upcoming game’s Mortal Kombat 1 title, it is actually the twelfth mainline game in the series, and that number doesn’t account for the various spinoffs and countless upgrades. Then you have all the comics, movies, TV shows, web shows, techno albums, and other stuff that grew out of the series. From Liu Kang fighting a stop-motion Goro in a dingy dungeon to seeing him reinvent the entire universe, Mortal Kombat has seen some stellar highs and embarrassing lows.
What I’m saying is, Mortal Kombat is…a lot. So, as we prepare for Liu Kang and Shang Tsung’s war over the rebooted Earthrealm, let’s talk about some lesser-known parts of the franchise that you might not know about.

After that trip down memory lane yesterday with the new Mortal Kombat 1 trailer, WB Games and NetherRealm have released a new behind-the-scenes video featuring Dave Bautista playing the game ahead of its September 19th release.
“Obviously, my voice is gone now from screaming ‘Mortal Kombat’ all day,” says Bautista during the gameplay session. “But I love this because it directly connects me to my past. So it’s more personal and feels more gratifying.”
Bautista elaborates, saying that growing up, his favourite character was Liu Kang because of Kang’s bicycle kick, and because he was able to morph into a dragon for his famous Mortal Kombat II fatality. “I like Scorpion now because I just want to hear him say ‘Get over here!’ (laughs).”

The mockbuster industry is a fascinating entity. Chief among the studios that specialize in mockbusters (ie. low-budget knockoffs of popular studio titles) is The Asylum, the company behind the "Sharkando" films. In 2023 alone, The Asylum has released a riff on "Cocaine Bear" titled "Attack of the Meth Gator," the latest installment in its "Transformers" ripoff franchise, "Transmorphers: Mech Beasts," and its own animated version of "The Little Mermaid" featuring the voices of Steve Guttenberg and "E.T." star Dee Wallace. And they say cinema is dead!
Shane Van Dyke, the grandson of acting legend Dick Van Dyke, got his start as a writer on the mockbuster circuit, penning films like "Titanic II," "Paranormal Entity," and "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" for The Asylum in the late aughts. Around that same time, he also teamed up with his brother, Carey Van Dyke, to co-pen the studio's "Street Racer" -- a riff on the "Fast & Furious" films,...

A couple weeks ago, Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid rounded out the cast of the sequel – which is apparently simply titled Mortal Kombat II. Last weekend, we saw a picture of several cast members in a restaurant together. And now Ludi Lin (who plays Liu Kang in these new films) took to Instagram to reveal that filming has officially started! He shared pictures of a clapperboard and his salad, and those can be seen at the bottom of this article.

With so many horrible sequels available, picking the ten worst sequels of all time was challenging. Indeed, there have been numerous instances where sequels have fallen far short of their original counterparts, making them infamous examples of ‘how not to do a sequel.’
Thankfully, viewers on IMDb did most of the work for us, sharing their valuable insights and ratings, which we’ve used to compile this list.
What follows is a painstakingly curated breakdown of each terrible sequel. We delve into what specifically made these follow-ups lackluster and disappointing. Some of these sequels found their unfortunate place on this list despite being birthed from incredibly successful and well-received franchises.
They had every ingredient for success – a captive audience, proven characters, and established lore, yet they managed to fumble. Conversely, others continued on an already rocky path of subpar predecessor films, cementing their series as characterized by chronic cinematic failure.

THR notes, “Rudolph will play Kitana, a character first introduced in Mortal Kombat II, the video game that thrust the franchise into the 1990s pop culture mainstream and made it what it is today. Jade, we learned last week, is being played in Mortal Kombat 2 by Tati Gabrielle, who co-starred alongside Adeline Rudolph in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
Karl Urban (“The Boys”) will also star in Mortal Kombat 2 as Johnny Cage.

Adeline Rudolph, who made her debut as part of Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, has joined Tati Gabrielle, her co-star on the Netflix series, in New Line’s spine-severing sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat.
Simon McQuoid, who directed the previous movie based on the video game franchise, is back behind the console for the new feature, which sees Karl Urban leading the ensemble and diverse cast.
Written by Jeremy Slater, the sequel continues the story of a group of ragtag fighters, versed in the ways of martial arts, who defend our reality, which is known as Earthrealm, against the Outworld. The first movie, released during the pandemic in both theaters and on HBO Max, remains one of the streamer’s biggest hits to date.

Fighting game fans are eating well right now. We are weeks away from Street Fighter VI being released. Tekken 8 is coming out sometime soon. King of Fighters Xv and Guilty Gear Strive are still cranking out Dlc. We even have new installments of Fatal Fury and Under Night on the horizon. Adding to the pile is the recently released trailer for Mortal Kombat 12, which is coming out on September 19!
Of course, the thing of it is that the game is actually called Mortal Kombat 1. They hinted as much with the teaser trailers, one of which included the hand on a clock skipping the 12 and going straight to the 1. So what does this confusing choice even mean? I mean, it was bad enough when the ninth game was called “Mortal Kombat.” Now they have to throw this at us?

NetherRealm is stil playing coy when it comes to the next entry for Mortal Kombat. And while we don’t have any news as of yet regarding the twelfth entry in the series, a new video appears to hint at what’s to come.
Yesterday, the Mortal Kombat Twitter account posted a video which featured several members of the development team thanking players for supporting the series for 30 years. And in typical Ed Boon fashion, he ended the video by saying that the team are “not quite done yet”. From there, the video cuts to a sequence showing sand falling in an hourglass. The camera zooms in on a single grain of sand, which explodes in something resembling The Big Bang.
Adding to the significance of the sequence is the main antagonist of Mortal Kombat 11 and Keeper of Time, Kronika, used an Hourglass that had the potential to rewind time...

Video game movies typically get a bad rap, as they try to strike a balance between exploring their narratives and catering to the fans of a given franchise. The move from one medium to the next can be a challenging one, but more recent additions to the sub-genre found success with titles such as Pokémon Detective Pikachu. There are more video game movies hitting the silver screen in recent years, so here’s a look at pre-2000s flicks.

"The Last of Us" has concluded its nine-week victory lap, and while we're all still picking up the pieces from the intense finale, it won't be long before plenty of folks jump into full-season rewatches to see what they missed. One of the many things that make "The Last of Us" one of the greatest video game adaptations ever made is that the source material isn't abandoned in the transition to televised storytelling. Since the series was co-created by creative director Neil Druckmann and includes direct input from game developer Naughty Dog, a serious effort has been made to bring as much of the game and its surrounding universe to the show as possible in good faith, including some amazing details.

What will survive of human civilisation when pandemics have stripped back the population, or the sun has swallowed our planet? A Hank Williams CD, perhaps, or Mortal Kombat II? These are the artefacts that survive the end times in Sky’s hit zombie thriller The Last of Us, which comes to its brutal denouement this evening. But for all the acclaim – all the gushing editorials about its place in the pantheon of TV shows that should be preserved from the apocalypse – can The Last of Us deliver an emotionally satisfying conclusion?
Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) are approaching their destination. Having dispatched the cannibalistic leader of a survivalist cult with a meat cleaver in the final minutes of last week’s episode, Ellie is struggling to stay upbeat. “Everything I’ve done,” she tells Joel, “it can’t be for nothing.” Out now on the West Coast, there...

This article contains spoilers for "The Last of Us" on HBO.
Over its first six episodes,"The Last of Us" has cleverly allowed Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to mete out details about her past. In doing so, it set up an emotional haymaker of a reveal that brought Ellie's journey into clearer, heartbreaking focus.
The series' seventh episode, titled "Left Behind," finds Ellie flashing back on her time in the Boston Quarantine Zone, where she came of age in the most wrenching of ways. These sequences are framed by Ellie's treatment of a severely wounded Joel (Pedro Pascal), who wants her to leave him to die. She has her reasons for refusing, and that is the heart of this installment and, perhaps, the series as a whole.
We learn that the shopping mall incident where Ellie contracted her non-fatal infection was an elaborate date staged by her best friend Riley (Storm Reid...

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last of Us" and the video game series of the same name.
In true "The Last of Us" tradition, the latest episode of the HBO series delivers yet another emotional gut-punch by centering the story around Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her best friend/crush Riley (Storm Reid). The previous episode ended on a cliffhanger, where Joel (Pedro Pascal) seemed to be on the verge of death after getting stabbed and losing a ton of blood. "I can't do this without you, Joel," Ellie pleads desperately, as she is stranded in the middle of nowhere and does not have the resources or know-how to save Joel's life. Pushed into an extreme situation like never before, Ellie relives the incident that marked the beginning of the end: An unforgettable night at the mall with her best friend, Riley, whom she loved, and lost too soon.

This post contains spoilers for HBO's "The Last Of Us" as well as Naughty Dog's video games, "The Last Of Us" and "The Last Of Us: Part II."
For seven weeks now, we've watched smuggler Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) fight to get teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) safely to the Fireflies, but all along, we've also been watching him fight for something else: her right to be a kid. The HBO series set the stage early on with the death of Joel's own daughter, Sarah (Nico Parker), familiarizing us with a world in which safety is far from guaranteed and the innocent are just as likely to die as the guilty. Ellie's own naivety perfectly balances Joel's cynicism, and it becomes clearer every week that he'll do anything to protect her as he would his own daughter.
But until now, we haven't actually gotten to see what being a kid...

The Last of Us Episode 7
“Left Behind” is an episode of The Last of Us that fans have been eagerly anticipating since the show was announced. Although the video game flashback to Ellie and Riley was released as bonus content in 2014, it’s considered to be essential to the game’s overall narrative, as it gives stirring insight into Ellie’s past that lends depth to her relationship with Joel.
The show includes Ellie’s backstory as a part of the main story and stays true to the game where it counts, though some moments are omitted and some new ones are added. We see one of the new scenes early on in the flashback, with Ellie getting into trouble as a Fedra trainee and getting pressured by Officer Kwong to clean up her act so that she can one day become an...

We sadly didn’t get a new Mortal Kombat entry last year on the series’ anniversary, but that all changes this year. Warner Bros. Discovery let the news slip during their earnings call yesterday that Mortal Kombat 12 will be coming in 2023.
Picked up by Twitter user Wario64, the clip from the earnings call had Andrew Slabin, Warner Bros. Discovery’s executive vice president of global investor strategy, announcing the new entry in passing. “And there’s lots more to come, including the highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, games also set for release this year with ambitious launch projections,” Slabin stated.
This is the first real news about Mortal Kombat 12 since Johnny Cage’s voice actor, Andrew Bowen, alluded to the game’s development last year. And really, it’s a no brainer for WB and developer NetherRealm, since Mortal Kombat 11 has sold in excess of...

During the 16-bit era, it was almost an unwritten rule that you had to have a boss at the end of every level. It was just the formula at the time, especially in an era dominated by side-scrollers.
Some developers would take the easy way out and make an enemy with a simple pattern that could be defeated in three hits. And that was fine.
But other devs got really creative, crafting screen-filling monstrosities or multi-stage tests of endurance that required players to deploy every skill they’d learned throughout the game. In other words they made enemies truly deserving of the title “boss.”
These are the 15 best Sega Genesis boss fights ever:

The 2021 "Mortal Kombat" movie had its fans and detractors, but one thing most people agreed on was a need for a big, likable personality that wasn't Kano (Josh Lawson). Kano was great, but having the only really charismatic character be a huge jerk was a letdown for some fans. Thankfully, the "Mortal Kombat" video game roster is massive, and there are plenty of important characters that could make the movie sequel shine. While my favorite fighter, Mileena (played by Sisi Stringer above), was actually pretty great in the 2021 film, some fans might have been disappointed not to see their hero, Johnny...

Musetta Vander broke onto the scene during the 1980s. Although many of her first roles were on the smaller side, her career started to take off in 1991 when she appeared in the TV series Super Force. Although her time on the show was short-lived, it helped get the ball rolling on other opportunities. In 1997, she got a major break when she was cast as Sindel in the film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Although she continued to land other gigs after that, the roles were mostly minor which caused her to fade from the spotlight. Over the years, many people wondered

It sounds silly to think that anyone is still a bit sore about Cole Young taking the coveted spot that should have gone to Johnny Cage in the last Mortal Kombat movie, but it’s not entirely inaccurate. So many fans were ready to see Cage in the most recent movie that seeing someone like Cole felt like a slap in the face since he didn’t add much to the movie and folks were pumped to see Cage show up. But when it became obvious that Cole was the focus of the movie thanks to his connection to Scorpion it was

It looks like a Mortal Kombat sequel is in the works. I’m not too surprised, but I’ll just say right off the bat, I hope Quan Chi makes an appearance. He was never my favorite character to play as, but you have to acknowledge his villain status in the whole franchise. I’m talking about every game, every cartoon or television adaptation attempt, and only the movies have done him dirty. I honestly can’t even remember if he was in Annihilation. Hey, it’s tough to get past the opening twenty minutes of that movie, so don’t blame me. If you’ve been

Saying that some folks enjoyed the newest version of Mortal Kombat and some didn’t is easy since no movie is ever going to please 100 percent of fans. But the fact is that more people can admit that the current version is miles above the movies that were released in the 90s. There were, admittedly, several questionable moments, and some aspects of the movie that could have been done a little better. But overall, the 2021 version of Mortal Kombat was what people wanted to see, and it left a serious desire to see more of this bloody franchise and

A “Mortal Kombat” sequel is in the works at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.
Jeremy Slater, best known for the Disney Plus Marvel series “Moon Knight,” has been tapped to write the screenplay. Warner Bros. and New Line had quietly been looking to develop other installments in its “Mortal Kombat” universe, but plans for a follow-up film had not been official until Slater had been hired to pen the script.
The first “Mortal Kombat,” a martial arts-inspired adaptation of the popular video game, opened in theaters and on HBO Max last April. Despite mixed reviews, the R-rated movie still managed to generate solid ticket sales at a time when most people were largely steering clear of their local cinema. It earned $42 million domestically and $83 million worldwide.
Simon McQuoid, who directed “Mortal Kombat,” previously hinted to Variety that he would be interested in expanding the movie into a gory action franchise.

When it comes to video game adaptations, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is an infamous abomination in the eyes of many fans. What is also odd about this film is that creator Ed Boon had his fingerprints on the screenplay; It’s insane to think that the filmmakers didn’t understand the video game that they’re adapting because Mr. Boon himself was part of the screenwriting process. However, maybe there’s a deeper meaning to the mythology of the sequel that has gone unnoticed. Within the first few minutes of the film, Lord Rayden says, “Mortal Kombat is not about death, but rather the preservation

When Mortal Kombat II hit the arcades in 1993, it was a massive hit. It took the first game, improved the gameplay, and gave us more of the gore and dark humor we loved. Plus: more fighters, more ninjas, more Fatalities, more finishing moves, more secrets, and better visuals. It solidified the franchise’s hold on pop culture, and even convinced Nintendo that including a little blood and gore in a video game isn’t the worst thing in the world.
Two other things that really helped kick things up a notch were the game’s atmosphere and story. The first Mortal Kombat game felt almost grounded in parts due to its Earth setting. Despite Kano’s eye and Sub-Zero’s ice powers, the otherworldly aspects seemed removed from the plot of the game. We only really got a peek at Outworld-related stuff: the four-armed Goro and the shapeshifting Shang Tsung...

Now that Mortal Kombat has hit HBO Max it’s fair game to talk about what might happen in a sequel, which should hopefully be happening at some point. Okay, so it’s been fair game to talk about anyway, but at this point, it feels as though it’s worth discussing just who might be best to play which part since there were plenty of Easter eggs hidden throughout the movie that people should have been able to pick out, and one of them was a very recognizable bladed fan that only one character in the game has ever mastered. I think it’s a no-brainer that Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, is probably the busiest man in Hollywood. He’s been a major character in some of the longest running franchises, a former professional wrestler, and when it comes to producing movies, it’s pretty much whatever he says. The man can do whatever he wants at this point. I personally have an enormous amount of respect for the man, because his work ethic is just astronomical. He’s devoted to everything he does; on top of his work, he’s a dedicated family man and when it comes to fitness, you can’t find

“Mortal Kombat” and “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” are locked in a fierce battle for box office dominance.
“Demon Slayer” has a slight edge at this point, earning $9.5 million from 1,598 locations on Friday. The Funimation and Aniplex of America release is based on an anime series and enters the U.S. after enjoying huge financial success in other markets, having already grossed more than $400 million in Japan and shattering records.
“Mortal Kombat,” the blood-soaked adaptation of the popular video game, grossed a sizable (for a pandemic) $9 million on Friday and is headed towards an opening weekend of $18 million to $19 million. That’s an impressive sum given the public health crisis, and is also notable because “Mortal Kombat” carries an R rating, somewhat limiting its potential audience. The film is screening in 3,073 venues, a far wider footprint than the one enjoyed by “Demon Slayer.”
