In the 1990s, Tim Allen was one of the biggest family comedy stars in the game. Beginning his career as a stand-up comic at the Comedy Store, his brand of family-friendly, relatable comedy made him stand out from his contemporaries. This led to ABC building a sitcom around him, Home Improvement. The show, where he played Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, became one of the biggest shows of the nineties, regularly ranking near the top of the Nielsen ratings. It wasn’t a critical darling, but families loved it, with Allen becoming a household name.
However, his career hit a turning point in 1994 when he signed on to star in Disney’s The Santa Clause, where he played an everyday businessman who becomes the heir apparent to Santa’s mantle. The film was a total smash, making him a movie star overnight. The following year, he voiced Buzz Lightyear in the first Pixar movie,...

In 1991, Jeffrey Katzenberg penned a legendary memo that called the future of Hollywood - and inspired Jerry Maguire. But what did it say?
Feature
On 11th January 1991, the-then head of The Walt Disney Company's motion picture division, Jeffrey Katzenberg, sent out a memo. Running to over 10,000 words, he sent this document to key higher-ups at the studio, noting that "it is meant for internal use only". Naturally, the memo leaked, and was widely ridiculed in the Hollywood trade press as a consequence. Thanks to the wonderful Letters Of Note, you can read it in full here.
If parts of this sound familiar, then it should: Cameron Crowe used Katzenberg's memo, entitled 'The World Is Changing: Some Thoughts On Our Business' as the basis for his 1996 hit, Jerry Maguire.
But re-reading Katzenberg's memo, over 20 years later, the now head of DreamWorks Animation called a lot of things right. In fact, given that as he wrote it,...

For some die hard fans of Tim Burton, Dark Shadows was not their highly most anticipated Burton film out this year. That honor goes to the stop motion, 3-D tale Frankenweenie, which is set to come out early in the spookiest month of the year, October 5th, 2012. It’s a return to the eerie animation style that delighted audiences with Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, only this time it’ll be in 3-D. With a cast that features Burton faves like Martin Landau (Ed Wood), Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands), Martin Short (Arrested Development, Jungle 2 Jungle) and Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice), the story about the reanimated pup named Sparky and his “maker,” Victor is one of the more fun concepts of the year. Dread Central has found a one sheet and a trailer for the upcoming film, which we now share with you.

Sy-Fy‘s Being Human made its second season debut last week, recussetating the nerd tv quotient in my life exponentially. Yes, I watch True Blood, and as you now know all-too-well, if it’s on PBS or BBC America, I’m on board. But there isn’t much I watch that I’m wholeheartedly embarassed to admit to, with the exception of Being Human. Well, Fsr readers, I’m coming clean. Yep, I’m a SyFy watcher, and semi-proud. Being Human, for those of you not in the know, is the story of three unlikely roommates, a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost. I mean, totally believable, right? Of course not, but if you’re looking for believable TV, then stick to the Law and Order franchise. It’s across-the-pond counterpart appealed to me after popping up in my “recommended for you” Netflix queue so often that I finally succumbed, plowing...

Fuck you, David R. Ellis. There are so many filmmakers (and films) that are struggling to find an audience yet you keep weaseling your way into American (and even foreign…) multiplexes. I mean, there are plenty of awful filmmakers out there, but this guy’s career is seriously a mystery. He sort of started out doing stuntwork. Yes, this guy did stunts. And not stunts on cool shit either, he did stunt work for Harriet The Spy and Jungle 2 Jungle. And then he went on to direct Homeward Bound 2. This is the same guy that gave us Snakes On A Plane, Two films in the Final Destination series and, now, Shark Night 3D. What a bastard.
It is no surprise that everything he keeps churning out is some sort of cash-in. The Final Destination films are obvious successes and Snakes On A Plane was supposed to be a sort of viral hit,...

Have you ever wanted to see Woody and Buzz team up for a live-action film? Disney is in the business of making your dreams come true, and their latest project is looking to fulfill just that. Deadline reports that the studio is in negotiations with stars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen to team for Jungle Cruise. Based on, of course, the Magic Kingdom theme park ride, the script will be written by Roger S.H. Schulman (Shrek, sequels to The Jungle Book, Mulan, Fox and the Hound, and Bambi).
There are little details, including no director yet. We know The Fighter producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are also attached. With Pirates Of The Caribbean being a huge cashcow for the studio, it is no surprise they are going after similar territory. Based on Schulman’s credits this will likely be much more family friendly that the Jack Sparrow teen-oriented adventures.

I'm just as sick of the current Vampire craze as anyone. Seems like every magazine cover features the bloodsuckers of Twilight, The Vampire Diaries and True Blood. Though the latter is a show that actually works for me because it features good ole sex and violence, fully realized characters and intriguing stories that often take bizarre turns. Did I mention it features good ole sex and violence? Another decent show is the supernatural comedy-drama Being Human, a BBC import with a unique premise involving the supernaturally cursed trying to lead normal lives while sharing a house together. Nothing's changed much for the American reboot except the setting has been shifted to Boston. Sam Witwer, known for his work in Stephen King's The Mist and as Ems worker David Bloome, aka the monstrous Doomsday on TV's Smallville stars as Aidan, a Vampire who has been coping with his condition for over...

I have never wanted an answer to a question in a PopWatch headline more than I do now — the former inquiry being the most pressing. The reason for my eagerness is because I’m not one of those cool people who has seen the British version of Being Human and can offer you up this bit-by-nitpicky-bit comparison of the two — and I say that admirably of those who can. (People who have time for British TV and American TV are my heroes, in fact.) So, I’m sorry. All I have for you is a take on the boring ol’ American version.

Each year for the past three, we here at Pajiba have compiled our Annual (Sh)it List, something of a riff on Entertainment Weekly's "It List," which explicates the ten trends, people, ideas, etc. of the year that annoy the hell out of us. We usually post the (Sh)it List during the early party of each year, but for whatever reason, the Guide escaped us this year. It's normally a group effort, but it occurred to me this morning that we missed it, it's late in the year now, and with the holidays approaching, it's too much to ask the rest of the crew here to commit to an organized, collective effort. I apologize.
However, for the sake of continuity, and so we can successfully bring back the 5th Annual (Sh)it List in 2011 as a group, I've taken it upon myself to compile a quick (Sh)it List for the archives.

Pasquin takes 'Congeniality'
Joe Somebody helmer John Pasquin has closed a deal to direct Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality 2 for Warner Bros. Pictures. Shooting is scheduled to start in the spring in Los Angeles. The project-- a Castle Rock Entertainment presentation in association with Village Roadshow Pictures -- will find Bullock reprising her role as Special Agent Gracie Hart. There is no other talent attached to the project, according to the studio. Bullock will again produce from a script by Marc Lawrence, who also penned the original Donald Petrie-directed film. Released in 2000, the first installment cleared $100 million at the boxoffice from a budget in the $45 million range. Pasquin's deal to direct Bullock likely stems from their previous relationship: Pasquin helmed several episodes of ABC's George Lopez, which is produced by Bullock's production company, Fortis Films. His other credits include Payne, Soul Man, Jungle 2 Jungle, The Santa Clause and Home Improvement.
