Kent Melton, the animation sculptor who created maquettes made of clay for iconic characters found in movies including Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, The Incredibles and Coraline, has died. He was 68.
Melton died Thursday at his home in Stone County, Missouri, of Lewy body dementia, family members told The Hollywood Reporter.
One of the few artists left in the industry who still sculpted in clay, Melton was a key player in the Disney animation renaissance of the 1990s. Later, he helped Laika Studios become a stop-motion powerhouse. Along the way, he was entrusted by animators to bring their two-dimensional drawings into a three-dimensional world.
Melton’s first Disney credit came on Aladdin (1992), followed by work on such other studio films as Thumbelina (1994), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), The Prince of Egypt (1998), Tarzan (1999), The Road to El Dorado (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...

Agatha Christie was the master of the perfectly constructed mystery; Oscar winner Hildur Guðnadóttir is an avant-garde cellist-composer. Yet the two meet to spine-tingling results for Kenneth Branagh’s third Hercule Poirot mystery, “A Haunting in Venice,” a loose adaptation of Christie’s “Hallowe’en Party.”
As it turns out, there’s a very good reason why Guðnadóttir might find pleasure in Christie’s work. “My grandmother, who was one of the first women doctors in Iceland and a brilliant virologist, always said that the only way to get a tiny break from your mind is to read a good detective novel or crime story,” Guðnadóttir told IndieWire.
“So, since I was very young, I have lived by this advice,” Guðnadóttir said. “And I have always wanted to sink my teeth into an Agatha Christie adaptation. When Ken approached me about this one, he was really clear from the get-go...

Warning: this article discusses major spoilers for "A Haunting in Venice."
It's the moment everybody looks forward to during the trailer for director Kenneth Branagh's newest Hercule Poirot movie. A half-dozen or so A-listers have been crowded into a claustrophobically tight space in some exotic locale. Each character wears expressions that somehow ride the line between crushing guilt and sheer incredulity that they could ever be considered criminals. And, with a magnificent flourish, Branagh's immaculately-groomed mug turns to the camera and somberly pronounces through his thick, deeply-exaggerated Belgian accent: "There has been a murder, and you are all suspects!"
Despite beginning with its main detective in a far different emotional state than the previous films -- living out his days in self-exiled retirement after losing his taste for crime-solving -- "A Haunting in Venice" (reviewed by /Film's Josh Spiegel here) doesn't so much as reinvent the classic formula that brought...

“A Haunting in Venice” began its domestic box office jaunt with $1.2 million in Thursday preview earnings. That’s slightly above the $1.1 million procured by “Death on the Nile” in February of 2022.
It’s understandably below the $1.6 million earned by “Murder on the Orient Express” in November of 2017. With strong reviews (77% and 6.6/10 on Rotten Tomatoes), including plenty of critics arguing that it’s the best of Kenneth Branagh’s three films as Hercule Poirot, the hope is an opening weekend closer to $20 million than $15 million.
The franchise started with a bang with “Murder on the Orient Express.” That offering starred a slew of big names like Johnny Depp (still an added value element), Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz and senior citizen-magnet Judi Dench. That it was based on one of Agatha Christie’s most famous books didn’t hurt. A $28 million debut led to a $103 million domestic and $353 million global cume on a $55 million budget.

Mes enfants! A Haunting in Venice marks the third entry in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie movie series, finally giving us enough evidence to sift through in order to solve the present mystery: who is the best screen Hercule Poirot?
Taking into account appearance, accent, mannerisms, brilliance of mind, vanity, theatricality, humour, pathos, and of course the all-important moustache, here’s our ranking from most unfortunately disappointing version of the detective, to Poirot perfection.
A bit of housekeeping: only English-language screen Poirots have been included, so no radio, animated, international or videogame versions appear below, nor do bit-part sketch comedy Hercules. The nine actors in contention range almost a century in time, several inches in height, and vastly in their take on what makes a proper Poirot.
9. Tony Randall in The Alphabet Murders (1965)

The whodunit is back.
At least that seems to be the case in recent years with the success of Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot movies—the third one, A Haunting in Venice, hits theaters this week—Rian Johnson’s Knives Out thrillers, and even TV shows like Only Murders in the Building. But according to someone who should know, the great-grandson of legendary murder mystery writer Agatha Christie, the classic detective story subgenre has never quite gone away.
“I would say that the movie industry came to the game late,” says James Prichard, a man who is not only Christie’s descendant but also the chairman and CEO of Agatha Christie Ltd., which manages the literary and media rights to his great-grandmother’s works. “We’ve never gone away, we’ve been making stuff all through the last 10, 20, 30 years. But we didn’t make a movie for a very long time.

Color me surprised to find A Haunting in Venice is a better horror movie than a nefarious whodunit. Maybe that’s unfair because Kenneth Branagh helmed 1994’s Frankenstein starring Robert De Niro and 1991’s Dead Again — he’s no genre novice, nor does his third Agatha Christie adaptation convey as much. Christie’s lesser-discussed Hercule Poirot novel “Hallowe’en Party” becomes a chilling Italian ghost story worth more as a supernatural investigation than a private detective caper. That’s not to say Branagh challenges The Exorcist or Poltergeist in terms of scare factors — atmospheric Halloween mysticism outshines a more predictable tale of masterful deduction.
Writer Michael Green’s adapted screenplay does a splendid job of tweaking Poirot’s mission for Branagh’s second sequel. The famous Belgian investigator has retired in Venice, beckoned to a séance by his mystery novelist friend Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey). Poirot is a man of factual reason and clear explanations,...

The whodunnit genre has been on a hell of a run since “Knives Out” hit theaters in 2019. Rian Johnson’s witty, socially conscious murder mystery became an electrifying cultural phenomenon — and reminded a cinematic universe-loving Hollywood that a repeatable formula involving rotating ensemble casts and picturesque settings could be great for business. But America’s fascination with the twisty adventures of Benoit Blanc makes it easy to forget that there’s been another studio-backed whodunnit franchise at the multiplexes for the past half-decade.
Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot series — which began with 2017’s “Murder on the Orient Express” and continued with last year’s superior “Death on the Nile” — has emerged as a straightforward alternative for mystery purists turned off by the flashiness of the “Knives Out” films. While Johnson keeps reminding us that murder mysteries are living, breathing entities that can push narrative boundaries and make us laugh and...

Exclusive: Apple Original Films and Skydance are continuing to build on their strong ties with another star-studded project as sources tell Deadline the two are partnering on the action-adventure tentpole Mayday with Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh starring and Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley directing. Sources tell Deadline, the script has been done for sometime, well before the Writers Strike started, but that deals, specifically for Reynolds and Branagh were still be worked out before Apple was able to board the project.
The action-adventure feature is based on an original pitch from Goldstein and Daley, who came to Skydance earlier this year with the idea and has been developing prior to Apple’s involvement. Once Reynolds showed interest in April to join the pic, the project started gaining serious momentum and while start date is still undetermined, seems likely this could the next thing Reynolds shoots. The logline is being kept under wraps.

Disney's presentation at CinemaCon, which is currently taking place in Las Vegas, was a bit muted compared to the likes of Warner Bros. That said, the Mouse House did show theater owners that they are prepared to deliver the goods under CEO Bob Iger, who returned to head up the company once again late last year. Case in point, a movie like "A Haunting in Venice" was showcased to the crowd, with the teaser trailer debuting online shortly thereafter. And yes, Kenneth Branagh's third Hercule Poirot mystery will indeed be an exclusive theatrical release.
While it's not necessarily news that the film is headed to a theater near you this fall, it is a welcome reminder that Disney is not doubling down stubbornly on streaming-only films. What's more, they're clearly willing to look at a more modern, mixed model of success in allowing movies like this to not only...

Dubbed the “Polish Marilyn Monroe,” the late actor and singer Kalina Jędrusik used to electrify the audiences of the Polish People’s Republic with her risqué outfits, performance in Andrzej Wajda’s Oscar-nominated “The Promised Land” or unconventional relationship with husband, writer Stanisław Dygat. Lucy Lawless had strong words for her former colleague, Kevin Sorbo, on Twitter earlier this week in the aftermath of the riots at the U.S. Capitol. Lawless, who co-starred opposite Sorbo in “Hercules” before landing her title role in the beloved series “Xena: Warrior Princess,” tweeted in response to Sorbo’s questioning of the makeup of protesters. In his tweet, Sorbo endorsed the view that protesters were “leftist agitators” and said that “They don’t look like patriots to me.”
Lawless said, “No, Peanut. They are not Patriots. They are your flying monkeys, homegrown terrorists, QAnon actors. They are the douchebags that go out and do the evil bidding of people like you who like to wind them up like toys and let them do their worst.” She added the hashtags “#keepingYourFilthyHandsclean #enabler.”

Thanks to their time as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joe and Anthony Russo comfortably rank among the most successful filmmakers in the history of the industry. As well as being the directors of the highest-grossing movie ever made, and the only names other than James Cameron to have helmed two films that earned over $2 billion globally, in terms of total combined earnings, only the back catalogue of Steven Spielberg has made more money at the box office.
You’d think that would give them the impetus to take it easy for a while, but the Russos are busier than they’ve ever been. Tom Holland thriller Cherry is in the can and awaiting release, the cast of Netflix’s $200 million espionage blockbuster The Gray Man is starting to fill out and the siblings have just signed on to direct graphic novel adaptation The Electric State with Millie Bobby Brown set to star.

No, it’s not the story of the 18th President of the United States. Kirk Douglas must have been a big hit in Rome, starring in one of the first and best of the Italo epic ‘classics,’ before the musclemen cornered the market. Homer’s tale of the husband who took ten years to come back from Troy is given real star power, a splendid production and best of all, an intelligent script. This disc looks a lot better than the ragged earlier DVD, plus it offers a superior Italian language soundtrack. And don’t forget Gary Teetzel’s recommendation: as an adaptation of The Odyssey, it’s right up there with O Brother Where Art Thou!

Post-Ghostbusters but pre-Julie and the Phantoms, Disney Channel was busy dishing out tricks and treats with Halloween movies like Under Wraps, Halloweentown, and Mom's Got a Date With a Vampire. But, almost 20 years since its release date, one movie I can't shake from the back of my mind is The Scream Team, mainly because the plot is surprisingly terrifying. I used to have nightmares about this movie every October as a kid, so it only felt natural that I should check it out again as an adult, and let me tell ya, those nightmares were 100 percent justified.
Zachariah Kull, the villain of the film, was an inventor in the 1800s who burned down his cabin with his wife still inside. While it's later proven that the fire was an accident sparked by a faulty invention he created using natural gas, Zachariah is seen as a criminal for centuries because of town lore.

It’s the most synergistic time of the year: Disney Night on “Dancing with the Stars!” And don’t worry, Carole Baskin will continue her feline theme with “The Lion King.” Because who didn’t see this coming?
The “Tiger King” star will perform the samba to “Circle of Life” on Monday, so this could be, um, interesting. How many rolls will Pasha Pashkov toss in here? And how will they recreate the iconic opening (because you know they will)?
Two dances will be performed the first time this season: the Charleston by Justina Machado and Sasha Farber, and the Argentine tango by Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson.
Kaitlyn Bristowe has the rumba, which ought to be slightly easier on her bum ankle.

Disney already have one version of Hercules on the horizon, with the Russo brothers set to produce the latest in the Mouse House’s multi-billion dollar bonanza of live-action remakes based on their extensive back catalogue of animated classics, and The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings‘ David Callaham is currently hard at work on the script. However, the studio could see themselves doubling down on the son of Zeus in the near future, with recent speculation hinting that Marvel Comics’ interpretation of the character could soon be on the way to their shared cinematic universe.
A few months ago, we heard that the McU’s Hercules might even show up as soon as Thor: Love and Thunder in a cameo role. And while Marvel have yet to officially announce that, a new report seems to indicate that his involvement in the franchise...

Exclusive: Fresh from an earnings report that saw it add 10 million subscribers during the pandemic, Netflix has just set its most financially ambitious feature film so far. Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans are set to star in The Gray Man, with Agbo’s Joe & Anthony Russo directing their first blockbuster since setting the all-time global box office record with Avengers: Endgame two years ago. The intention here is to create a new franchise with a James Bond-level of scale and a budget upwards of $200 million.
The Russo’s Agbo is producing, and the script was written by Joe Russo, with a polish by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who scripted the Russo-directed Captain America and Avengers films and who are Co-Presidents of Story at Agbo. It is based on the 2009 Mark Greaney novel that introduced the Gray Man, a freelance assassin and former CIA operative named Court Gentry.

Directed by Arthur Lubin
When he shuffled off this mortal coil in 1995, Arthur Lubin’s New York Times obituary was titled “Arthur Lubin, 96, Director Of ‘Mr. Ed’ TV Series, Dies.” It’s doubtful the prolific Lubin would have complained about that particular credit headlining his accomplishments; the man who directed Karloff and Lugosi, jumpstarted Abbott and Costello’s film career and gave Clint Eastwood his first break, also had a thing for talking animals. In 1950 he bought the rights to a book about a talking mule and began a series of hit comedies starring a four-legged chatterbox named Francis and his two-legged pal played by Donald O’Connor.

“Avengers: Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo responded to recent comments made by Falcon actor Anthony Mackie, in which he criticized the diversity behind the scenes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Mackie said last week in an interview with Daveed Diggs as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series that it’s “more racist” that “Black Panther” is the only Marvel movie with a Black cast, director and crew.
“I think we can always all do better at diversity constantly in this business in every facet of every industry, so he’s not wrong at all,” Joe Russo said in a podcast with MovieMaker, though he was unfamiliar with Mackie’s specific comments. “So I think that we all have to work harder to keep endorsing and supporting diversity on both sides of the camera.”

For some reason, even though the expanded Star Wars universe presents infinite opportunities to introduce characters and visit galaxies we’ve never seen before, Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be adamant that everything connects to George Lucas’ Original Trilogy in some fashion.
The Force Awakens was criticized by many for sticking too close to the template established in A New Hope, while The Rise of Skywalker doubled down on fan service as a direct result of Rian Johnson taking liberties with the mythology in The Last Jedi. Solo may have found a new lease of life as a fan favorite after initially bombing at the box office, but Han’s origin story still remains entirely unnecessary.
With the likes of Kevin Feige and Taika Waititi now circling the sci-fi series, there’s renewed hope that any new Star Wars movies will stand on their own merits and bring something fresh to the stagnating brand,...

If you watched an action, sci-fi, or horror movie in the 1980s, there was a good chance it was produced by Cannon Films. The studio — perhaps the last great home of B-movie and exploitation classics — was founded in 1967 but hit its apex between 1979 and 1987, releasing scores of films that (mostly) no one would call high cinema but which delivered thrills, chills and plenty of blood, action, and fire on a budget.
Tapping into the massive market for both high and low concept fare — the 1980s equivalent of drive-in double bill fillers — Cannon, under the leadership of Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, were perhaps best known for churning out chintzy crowdpleasers like the Chuck Norris-starring Missing in Action and The Delta Force along with a slew of Death Wish sequels.

Disney Plus has a huge back catalogue of the Mouse House’s biggest and best movies, and they’re adding more all the time. Case in point: this coming week will see the arrival of 1999’s Tarzan on the streaming service for the first time, as well as its sequel, Tarzan II.
Based on the novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan stars Tony Goldwyn as the legendary Ape-Man, a human orphan raised by gorillas in the depths of the African rainforest. Minnie Driver plays Jane Porter, the English explorer who discovers Tarzan and his tribe along with her father Professor Archimedes Q. Porter (Nigel Hawthorne). Also on board are Brian Blessed as John Clayton, the blood-thirsty hunter, and Glenn Close and Lance Henriksen, who voice Tarzan’s adoptive gorilla parents.

Disney Plus has been a hit huge since it launched late last year, but it’s come under fire from some quarters for its overzealous censorship. For instance, the bizarrely poor CGI covering Daryl Hannah’s behind in Splash or an actress’ barest hint of cleavage in an episode of The Wizards of Waverly Place. The latest peculiar example of this includes a bunch of family-friendly films being blocked on the streaming site’s Kids’ Profile.
If you have kids and Disney Plus, you’ll be familiar with the Kids’ Profile option, which allows you to set up a profile for your child within your account that filters out the unsuitable material and leaves all the suitable stuff. However, CinemaBlend has discovered that a number of titles which 99.9% of parents would agree they’d let their young ones watch are removed on the Kids’ Profile.

According to entertainment reporter and industry insider Daniel Richtman, Disney is currently working on a live-action adaptation of The Black Cauldron, the financially under-performing and critically disastrous animated film of the 80s. And while exciting to hear, this isn’t too surprising to learn about, as We Got This Covered first told you last year that a remake was in the works.
While Disney has yet to officially announce anything, Richtman’s claims correspond to a few of Disney’s recent business decisions. In 2016, the media conglomerate re-acquired the rights to The Chronicles of Prydain, a series of books written by the American author Llyoyd Alexander on which the original animated film was based.
That adaptation, based largely on two of the five books in Alexander’s series, tells the fantastical story of a young pig keeper who teams up with a princess to prevent an evil king from coming...

Put together, Annecy’s latest big wave of programming announcement suggests that its move online will mean no world premiere of a potential Hollywood blockbuster – such as, in the past, the “Despicable Me” movie series. They re the result of a seismic super weapon known as the Hell Storm device; and now that it’s been activated, the shock-waves it sends out will destroy major cities across the globe, killing millions. When her claims fall on deaf ears, Kate teams up with her daughter and estranged husband at the San Andreas fault line to find a way to counteract the destruction. New Zealand is set to get more studio space with the opening of the 11,725m2 X3 Studios complex next month, just half an hour’s drive outside Auckland.
Developed by Xytech Studio Management Co., the studios have been specifically designed for large scale ‘build the world’ productions.
The flexible offering includes multiple configurations of up to four studios, including the 5,800m2 X3 Mega Stage. Xytech promises stages can be quickly reconfigured with a demountable, acoustically treated concrete partition wall system.
Located on a secure 2.4 hectare site, the studios boasts close access to urban, coastal, forest and rural locations, and are a short drive to Auckland airport.
New Zealand has recently started to relaunch production, with the sector having developed Covid-19 healthy and safety protocols. Xytech expects the first project on site in the next few months, and is currently accepting further enquiries.

Anna rescues her sister, Mulan saves China, and Moana restores balance to the world. Yet as news of a Hercules live-action movie hit headlines, I was reminded that one of my favorite woman Disney characters is Megara, the woman who literally sold her soul to the underworld god for a guy. Meg, wonderfully voiced by Susan Egan, is far from a role model or feminist icon. But she is one of the richest, most developed characters in Disney's library, one who we don't talk about nearly enough.
"I'm a damsel. I'm in distress. I can handle this. Have a nice day."
Meg steals scenes in Hercules with her magnetic presence. Based on screwball comedy actresses from the 1940s, she has beautiful allure. It's hard to forget her voluminous Fran Drescher hair, smoky eyeshadow, and berry lip. And let's be honest, "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" is an earworm,...

A-list actor Chris Pratt has faced off against aliens, dinosaurs and Lego pieces, but one foe he couldn’t defeat was his own, overflowing inbox.
After making a promise to himself that he’d use his time in quarantine to clean the fifty thousand unread emails that were collecting dust in his account, a shocked Pratt awkwardly confessed to his Instagram following that he’d deleted all of them by accident using a third-party software.
Unkempt inboxes are by no means a rarity, and Pratt’s explanation for how he got his own is certainly relatable, with the actor explaining:
“So yesterday my son was playing with my phone and he gasped in shock looking at the number of unread emails that I had,” Pratt said in a Twitter post. “It’s a lot. It’s a lot. I get it, I know, It’s mostly junk. See, what I...
