Having seen his script about the 1992 Los Angeles riots – first commissioned way back in 2006 – passed between directors including Spike Lee and Justin Lin, 12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley is taking the big chair himself, aiming to direct the drama next year. The Oscar-winning writer and producer, who has a couple of films in his directorial portfolio (including Cold Around The Heart and Jimi: All Is By My Side) has also been directing episodes of his TV series, American Crime. He’s now attached to direct the script, which will cover the violent events of April 1992 as the acquittal of four Los Angeles police officers for the near-fatal beating of motorist Rodney King sparked massive riots and protests in the city that ended with 63 dead, more than 2,000 injured and around $1 million in property damage. Production company Broad Green is on board to finance and distribute the film, working with Brian Grazer...

For a movie about rock 'n roll royalty, there hasn't been much noise about the Jimi Hendrix biopic "All Is By My Side." Not only does the movie feature Andre 3000 (aka Andre Benjamin) playing the legendary axeman, it was written by Oscar-winning "12 Years A Slave" scribe John Ridley, who directs as well (it's his sophomore feature effort; his first is the little-seen 1997 film "Cold Around The Heart"). And yet, despite all that and a Tiff premiere last fall, we haven't heard much about it. But perhaps a showing at SXSW will change that. A new clip from the movie has landed online, giving folks a first taste of Andre 3000 as Hendrix, in this scene opposite Imogen Poots, playing model and muse Linda Keith, onetime girlfriend of Keith Richards, who inspired songs from both men. The movie's existence doesn't make the Hendrix estate happy, but it steers clear of legal trouble...

Director Kevin Tancharoen, who helmed last year's remake of 80s musical hit Fame as his first feature film project, is leaving behind lycra and legwarmers to venture into sci-fi territory.
Will we now see performing arts students dancing in the streets on top of spaceships? Probably not...
He is to make a sci-fi flick called Arcana, which is set up at Rat Entertainment and will be produced by Brett Ratner (director of Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand and the Rush Hour series) and Jay Stern (a producer on Rush Hour 3). Universal will distribute.
Tancharoen (pictured right) told Moviehole: "Arcana is a unique blend of the graphic-novel backdrop - like Blade Runner - and shot like 300, and has a little bit of Warriors mixed in there, with a little bit of martial arts, so it's got a lot of crazy elements in there. It's going to be really cool.
