People adore Duck Dynasty, and for good reason. It might seem like they’re nothing more than a bunch of hairy rednecks with guns, but this is a family that has so much more to offer than most people; and they’re a classic example of what it’s like to have a fun family with plenty of dysfunction all rolled into one successful group of people who know how to live. They live and they love fiercely, and they do it on their own terms. Surprisingly, though, they do it a lot better than most of us. Here you have a family

Exclusive: Fox has just closed a mid- against high-six-figure deal for A Better Place, a spec script by Brad Ingelsby that will be produced by Scott Free’s Ridley Scott and Michael Schaefer, with Michael Pruss exec producing. This amounts to a reteam for Ingelsby and Scott. Ingelsby was a 27-year-old AFI grad living at home with his parents in Pennsylvania and working for his father’s insurance business when his very first script, Low Dweller, sold for $650,000 against $1.1 million to Relativity in 2008, with Scott attached to direct and Leonardo DiCaprio to star. Scott and DiCaprio both dropped out but remained producers, and the project eventually became Out Of The Furnace, the gritty drama that Scott Cooper directed with Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana and Willem Dafoe. It was a throwback movie that proved too rough for mainstream audiences, a lot like the Cormac McCarthy-scripted The Counselor,...

From a purely objective point of view, modern life can be a bit rubbish. Not on a third world scale, of course, but humanity has apparently reached a point in the evolutionary journey where the biggest motivation for some is simply to do everything in the power to annoy everyone else. And even though we’re forever told we’re living in a period of growth and innovation, there are still some things in existence that should have been wiped out years ago for the good, and the sanity of all of the world’s peoples.
So, come with us now on a journey through time and space, to a world without the typically downright blood-boiling displays of the human race. We’re here to imagine an Utopia with annoyances: a heavenly place without the things that make your life unfeasibly, and occasionally illogically difficult. That’s right – no annoying celebrities,...

Anyone who comes to Ghost On The Canvas unaware that Glen Campbell has Alzheimer’s disease and plans to make this his final album will be tipped off by the record’s dour opening tracks. “I have lived and I have loved, Lord, sometimes at such a cost,” he sings on “A Better Place,” and it’s clear which place he’s referring to. On subsequent songs, like the title track (which quotes the distinctive beeping sound from “Wichita Lineman”) and “A Thousand Lifetimes” (which mimics the song’s memorably twangy guitar solo), Campbell assesses his life’s triumphs and ...

Knowing that his stage presence won't be long, Glen Campbell announced that he is planning a series of goodbye concerts this summer for his fans. The Grammy winning musician has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and he wants his devotees to be aware of his condition.
"Glen is still an awesome guitar player and singer," said his wife Kim in an interview with People. "But if he flubs a lyric or gets confused on stage, I wouldn't want people to think, 'What's the matter with him? Is he drunk?' "
Campbell, who turned 75 in April, has been suffering short-term memory loss in recent years and he finally found out about the disease six months ago. "I still love making music," he said. "And I still love performing for my fans. I'd like to thank them for sticking with me through thick and thin."

This week on Private Practice, Betsey comes to Oceanside. As you'd expect, the arrival of Dell's orphaned daughter, both of whose parents were killed last year, is an emotional moment.
Emotional and potentially even sadder for the poor girl.
Betsey's aunt informs the doctors that Dell told them to visit the practice if she ever needed anything. Turns out what she needs is to not care for Betsey anymore. It's heartbreaking.
Will one of the doctors step up and take her in? How much more than a little girl take? Here's a clip from "A Better Place to Be," airing tomorrow night after Grey's Anatomy ...

With the proliferation of Top Tens and Best Of lists on the internet at this time of year we wanted to try something a little different.
2009 was an important year for the business of cinema; games were changed with the acquiescence of audiences to the notion of 3D, low budgets met with large returns, old franchises spawned reboots and rebakes with varying success, the British film industry remained strong and gave us some bright new stars in our sky.
We asked our writers to come up with an alternative set of awards which would honour those films, directors and actors who made 2009 such an enjoyable year. Strong emotions are rendered in strong language, be warned if words offend.
So, here now, I present to you our awards for 2009 – The Truffles.

Heal The World/Make It A Better Place/For You And For Me/And The Entire Human Race - Michael Jackson Let's face it, millions of words will be printed and spoken about Michael Jackson in the months and years to come, about his death, his pyrotechnic life and all the things that make his eccentric kind of notoriety never die. But what I hope won't get lost in the screech and shuffle likely to come is one fact: Michael Jackson was, by his own admission, both a victim and survivor of a childhood weighted in violence. There is much research to show how such trauma invades the mind and body with pain and shame. Physical, verbal, emotional abuse lives on. Jackson happened to have the grace and talent to rise above it and, in the process, alter the world. But millions upon...

Last October, shortly after our annual Masters of Design issue hit the streets, I got an email from Gadi Amit, president of the San Francisco strategic design firm, NewDealDesign LLC. NewDealDesign was one of the "design factories" profiled in that issue, and Gadi, a leading design thinker himself, had been at a party to celebrate our Masters in New York.
In the nicest possible terms, Amit gently took Fast Company to task for devoting so much space in that issue to the industry's design super stars, and not enough to design for the "real world."
"As humanity is close to realizing the limits of 'progress' in resources and environmental impact, and as the political scene is revolting in demand for better attention to main-street needs, I find it odd that the design leadership is still holding to a 'trickle down' design philosophy," he wrote.
