As nominated by our writers, here are the books published in 2015 we can’t recommend highly enough…
Closing the final page on the very best books leaves you with a single urge: to share it. We’re talking about the kind of books that make you want to follow strangers down the road, tugging at their elbow and saying “seriously, you’ve got to read this”.
Here then, is our equivalent of doing that. These are the books published in 2015 that our writers felt compelled to share. If there’s one that you feel similarly enthused about, please do recommend away in the comments section...
The Rest Of Us Just Live Here – Patrick Ness
Yet more sharp, involving stuff from Patrick Ness whose Chaos Walking trilogy is comfortably one of the best sci-fi series of recent years. (While we’re on the subject, Ness’ A Monster Calls,...

The Great British Bake Off duo Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins will reportedly not be returning with another series of their ITV chatshow.
Daytime programme Mel & Sue, which launched in January, failed to bring in big enough ratings for the channel, The Sun reports.
The show featured celebrity guests, cooking and questions from the audience in a similar format to Mel & Sue's previous Channel 4 hit Light Lunch, but struggled to beat its competition in the 4pm slot.
A spokesperson has now confirmed that the show won't be returning, but said: "Mel & Sue are great talents and we hope to work with them on other projects in the future."
For now, Mel & Sue are starring in the sixth series of The Great British Bake Off, which pulled in 9.3m viewers for its first episode last week.
The show airs on Wednesdays at 8pm on BBC One.

Doctor Who, Star Trek and more: what happened when sci-fi, horror & fantasy heroes have popped up on British daytime TV over the years…
Pre-YouTube, fandom was a hard-earned thing. It took research, dedication and enough patience to hover over the family video player’s ‘record’ button for an entire episode of TV-am in anticipation of six minutes with Sylvester McCoy. Six minutes in which the Seventh Doctor would be polled if he was a cat or dog person and then asked to taste a lemon roulade.
Scarcity bred desire in those days, so we took what we could get from our heroes of yore, even if that meant watching Hammer Horror legend Ingrid Pitt make a chocolate mousse, or the aforementioned McCoy attempt to answer fan questions above the hubbub of a Nottingham swimming pool complex. The collision of geek icons and UK daytime magazine shows was sometimes illuminating, sometimes excruciating,...

In many, many ways, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins have had one heck of a career journey since the '90s.
From serving up the odd flop to near-national treasure status, their "resuscitation" - as Perkins put it to Digital Spy when we met the pair for an exclusive interview - came courtesy of The Great British Bake Off in 2010.
Riding their re-found popularity, ITV has delivered daily chat show Mel & Sue.
It sees the comedy duo revisit their Light Lunch roots - much to the excitement of those who love slightly unpolished, slightly chaotic and bloody funny television...
How did Mel & Sue come about? Did ITV approach you, or vice versa?
Sue: They asked us actually. And we are so shallow that if you ask us, we will come.
Mel: We're available!
Would you say there are quite a few similarities between Mel & Sue and Light Lunch?

To call Mel & Sue a "brand new chat show" is a cheeky move from ITV.
It might be new in name, but that's just about it. We've seen the presenters, format and even guests in the new show, which aired for the first time today (January 12), all here before.
In the late '90s, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins fronted Light Lunch on Channel 4. It featured cooking, celebrity guests (including Jennifer Saunders), questions from the studio audience and haphazard presenting.
Mel & Sue wasn't a million miles away. It was all about cooking, celebrity guests (including Jennifer Saunders), questions from the studio audience and haphazard presenting.
Commissioned on the back of their reinvigorated success from The Great British Bake Off, the fact they were revisiting old ground was something that wasn't lost on the pair.
As they discussed Celebrity Big Brother in their introduction, they quipped the Channel 5 show was...

Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins have joked that they may call their new daytime talk show a "farewell tour" in case it fails to impress.
The Great British Bake Off duo will launch Mel & Sue on ITV next Monday (January 12), 15 years after their original series Light Lunch came to an end.
Discussing their nerves, Perkins said: "I've started calling it the 'Farewell Tour' in case it fails. I'll say, 'Mel and I will always love each other, but it's goodbye'. But if it works, we'll rebrand it and say, 'Well, hello again'. It's like the Rolling Stones - every tour is a farewell tour."
Giedroyc added: "Everyone is really nice if they think it's a farewell tour. They give you the benefit of the doubt."
On finding the right format for their return, the pair also revealed that they had spent two or three years trying to find the right live show.

Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins will front a new daytime talk show on ITV.
Princess Pictures has renewed its relationship with the pair to launch the new studio-based series, Broadcast reports.
The show is reportedly a co-production between Princess and Perkins's indie Square Peg TV, and is being lined up for the 4pm timeslot.
The Great British Bake Off hosts will interview celebrities and real-life characters on the chatshow, which is the pair's first daytime job since they fronted Light Lunch and Late Lunch on Channel 4 between 1997 and 1998.
Helen Warner, ITV's director of Daytime, said: "I've been a big Mel and Sue fan for years. Both are brilliant broadcasters and comedians and bring a unique warmth and charisma as presenters."
Meanwhile, Princess Productions' Emma Hardy added: "We're so excited to be producing this new series for ITV, and thrilled to be making live television again with Mel and Sue...

Kimberley, Ruby or Frances. One of these names will be engraved in the Great British Bake Off Hall of Fame tonight as Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry select the 2013 champion.
Picnic pies (yum), pretzels (yum-yum) and a wedding cake showstopper (nom-nom-nom) are all that stands between the bakers and victory. Who will cook up a storm? Who will crack under the pressure? It's not too long before we find out.
21:01That's all for Bake Off 2013! Can the show possibly get any bigger and better? We're already excited for 2014 and the move to BBC One, so we're guessing the answer to that question might be yes. Roll on series 5 and yet more soggy bottoms!
21:00The series ends with a little catch-up on what happened after the Bake Off tent was taken down. Howard no longer bakes custard. Ali still hates fruit pies. Ruby got a 1st in her degree...

Mel Giedroyc claimed to have kissed Dermot O'Leary on Would I Lie to You? tonight (May 24).
The Great British Bake Off presenter initially announced only that she had once "had a snog" with an unnamed person present on the show.
After the opposing team had conjectured that the likely candidate was fellow Cambridge graduate David Mitchell, Giedroyc specified that it was in fact Dermot O'Leary.
She went on to say that it had happened at an "end of term party" on 1990s Mel and Sue show Light Lunch.
O'Leary, going along with what his teammate was saying, added that he did not know whether he had been in a relationship at the time, although Giedroyc said the X Factor presenter had claimed to be single.
Watch the video below to find out whether Giedroyc was telling the truth:
Would I Lie to You? airs Fridays on BBC One at 8.30pm.

It’s been sad times in the UK lately as lesbians across the land come to terms with the fact that the continued no-news from the BBC about Lip Service is making the chance of a Series 3 look as dead in the water as Cat in the road. This is a good time to urge you to sign the petition.
In the meantime we need a bit of good news, so what if we told you that Anna Skellern (Lexy) was to play gay again in a show written by, and starring the baking hot Sue Perkins alongside Shelley Conn, who once locked lips with Laura Fraser in Nina’s Heavenly Delights? Well, this is exactly what we’re telling you. This is happening in real life.

It’s Pink List time again, and it’s been more exciting than ever because The Independent On Sunday, the British newspaper that compiles the list of the country’s 101 most influential Lgbt people, have, for the first time, invited people to send in nominations. These votes will then be considered by the judging panel, which features the likes of Diva magazine editor Jane Czyzselska, Conservative MP Margot James, Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas and Tamsin Omond, founder of the environmental campaign group Climate Rush.
Last year, there were 31 of our kind on the list, which is still quite a few steps from equality, but this was nine more than in 2009. So, by our reckoning, there should be at least 40 women on this year’s list.
Because we love a vote and writing lists, we’ve combined the two and we’ve written a list of the ten women that we would vote for.

"Great LezBritian" is a fortnightly stroll through the very best of British lesbo-centric entertainment and culture. Plus there will be some jolly good interviews with the top ladies who are waving the flag for gay UK.
A couple of columns ago we wrote about the British women we wish were gay, which gave rise to much debate and informed us that our readers lust after and loathe Cheryl Cole in equal amounts. We decided that in this column we’d like to celebrate the British ladies we’re glad actually are gay or bisexual, which has been an unexpectedly tricky task.
Once again we sent out a Tweet asking you to suggest your favourite Britbians, and as the land that proffered Skins, Tipping the Velvet and Bad Girls, we were certain that Britain would have so many options that we’d be tossing second tier choices out of the list...
