Werewolf movies are traditionally about the beast within, but the adversaries in David Hayter's Wolves are strictly external. With its outsider protagonist defending a rural town against a menacing gang of thugs, the film is built on the classic foundation of a western — it feels a little like Road House in Teen Wolf drag. Cayden (Lucas Till), on the run for wolfing out and slaughtering his family, heads to the secret werewolf community of Lupine Ridge to understand his condition. The Ridge, however, is run by badass alpha male Connor (Jason Momoa), whose demands on the town's peaceable werewolves are becoming increasingly onerous. The Music Room (Criterion) Satyajit Ray’s 1958 masterpiece looks at the life of a fallen aristocrat as a metaphor for an India that is not only becoming Westernized, but modernized technologically and culturally beyond recognition. When the beloved music room, where he has hosted lavish concerts in the past, starts falling into disrepair as attendance drops steadily, the man realizes his way of life is vanishing. Stunningly shot in black & white, one of Ray’s finest works. Bonuses: Documentary on Ray from 1984 by Shyam Benegal; Interviews with Ray biographer Andrew Robinson and filmmaker Mira Nair; Excerpt from 1981 roundtable discussion between Ray, critic Michael Ciment, director Claude Sautet. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
Beauty And The Beast (Criterion) Jean Cocteau’s sublime adaptation of the classic fairy tale become a beloved classic upon its 1946 release, and hasn’t faded since.

Let’s face it… Special Makeup FX are the backbone of the horror genre. As engaging as storylines can be, as believable as acting is, and as competent as directing and cinematography are, fans pay money and put their asses in those seats or buy those DVDs and Blu-rays because they love the creatures.
Back in the 1980s FX artists were like rock stars. Names like Savini, Bottin, and Baker were spoken in revered tones. People went to see films because of who was doing the FX. As the years progressed, FX artists refined techniques, CG was introduced, new materials were brought into play, and what was once a discipline soon became an art form.
One FX artist who’s recently been helping elevate that art form to new heights is Vincent J. Guastini. His contributions to such films as Requiem for a Dream, Flags of our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima,...

Is it just us, or do there seem to be more and more televised award shows each year? That means one thing (and it has nothing to do with awards)—there’s more red carpet fashion than ever. When we compiled our list of favorite fashion moments from 2010, we had quite a crop to choose from. Gone are the days where the only shows worth mentioning were the Emmys, Grammys and Oscars. This year’s style compilation comes to you courtesy of the Creative Arts Emmys, the SAG Awards, and even the ESPYs. Oh, and a couple dozen film premieres, too. Check out who made our cut for best dressed celebs of 2010 in the gallery below—including just about everyone from Mad Men, a very Goop-y celeb we love to hate, and the most famous half-vampire couple ever. 50. You Can Ring My Bell 49. Hop In My Mini Cooper 48. Glambert 47. Be-Jewel-ed...

Our second stab at the Oscars contains make-up effects and score (read part 1 here). The make-up effects, followed by the visual effects and technical awards, remain my favorite parts of the show; here you got to see your heroes: Rick Baker, Howard Berger, Chris Walas or Rob Bottin in the audience. Even the great Stan Winston could have been out there, back in the day. Though best known for his “visual effects” wins—he brought home an Oscar for best make-up in 1991 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Here genre fans can rejoice, Greg Cannom brought home the gold, again, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cannom, a genre elder, worked alongside (just to name a few) Fincher, Coppola, Landis, Dante, Blatty, and Cohen creating all sorts of character and creature make-ups.
