Mostly a solid watch

"Roula" is a German movie from 1995, so this one is already over 20 years old. It was written and directed by Martin Enlen and it is maybe his most known work. The entire film builds up towards a dark disturbing secret involving the central female character played by Anica Dobra. She is also the most known cast member or maybe Ernst Jacobi. Anyway, despite the pretty bad film poster, this was not a bad watch. It had some lengths early on, but it wasn't anything too bad and I liked how it was a really atmospheric watch from start to finish. The pretty good achievement is also proved by the fact that a genuinely mediocre actress like Anica Dobra gives a decent performance here which is mostly thanks to Enlen I am sure. I also felt that the casting directors did a really good job. All the actors work very well for their characters here, the old ones as well as the young ones and this is possible the main reason why the film works out so well.

Also the ending offers some nice room to discuss. Was her deed realistic after saying shortly before how much she loved him. Is her disgust for him with the young girl really good enough a reason to justify what she did in terms of realism. Or is it too much of a forced "happy" ending. It's for you to decide. I may have chosen a different path, but I still wouldn't say that I am unhappy with the path they chose and how it all turned out. It is definitely one of the better German movies from the 1990s and it shows that it was not impossible at all at that point to make good films here in Germany that had nothing to do with the Fall of the Berlin Wall. I still feel that the approach here overall may have a touch of Wenders or Fassbinder attached to them and I am sure this film would be even more appreciated and seen now if it had been from the 1970s. It is clearly underseen, but hopefully my review can change this. It's a pretty decent work and I think you should check it out.
